Ever sent a letter to the wrong person by mistake?

I did when I was eight years old, and then I was visited by the Lord of Hell himself.

But there was no real mistake. Not then when I was just a kid, and not now that I’m a woman.

I wanted a puppy for Christmas.

And a puppy is what I got.

Only, Melkor, son of the Lord of Hell's finest Hellhound warrior was given to me not as a gift, but as a Guardian.

And when Melkor goes missing, I’m given the only option a best friend has.

I fight fire with fire and become a woman possessed—a mortal woman, that is

He’s been my best friend, my Guardian, for almost my entire life…but now, as I travel to the Underworld to save him, I realize he’s so much more.

Melkor says after me, Hell is easy.

I guess I’m about to find out.

I have been an avid reader for longer than I can remember, desiring the darker, edgier works of Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Dean Koontz. I first started writing in High School giving that away when my first attempt was nothing more than dribble. I wish now that I kept at it, pursued it with a hunger that I currently possess.

Writing is my passion, it is what fuels the fires inside of me and it is an all-or-nothing furnace that keeps me up at all hours.

I am married to a wonderful supportive husband, I have 2 wonderful kids and the best friends that I have waited some 35 odd years to meet.

It made me giggle

I’ll be reading the next book.
I enjoyed the banter. I’m interested more in Lucifer, though. I do recommend it.

Melkor & Purity Kindle Edition
by Kim Faulks

I borrowed this book via the Kindle Unlimited program and am choosing to leave a fair and honest review.

Let me start shouting my love of Ms. Faulks latest with extolling the beauty of the cover. When I read a book about a normal sized heroine, the cover will usually show her as thinner than Kate Moss! A waif is not a normal sized girl! Purity is a beauty in all ways and the cover only makes her more so.

Purity is a very special kind of girl. Where many children accidentally misspell their letters to Santa, Purity sends her to the Lord of Hell on purpose. She only wants one thing, a puppy. A very special puppy. And Melkor is her reward.

A friend for life who is always there for her, when he is called into hell.

Ms Faulks gleefully includes Dante's vision of Hell and I loved that! I also love the way her characters are neither purely good nor purely evil, not even Lucifer himself.

The plot is laid out well and we see Purity and Melkor both mature through it.

This is a slow burner, because it starts when she is just a toddler! But it is worth the wait if the rest of Purity's story is even half as good!

We also get to see a special Hellhound, Rykor, when he is less than grown up. Thank you, Ms Faulks for that. It helps set the timeline.

Fantastic story, fantastic characters and fantastic cover!

Five morningstars out of 5.

This was my first book by Kim Faulk's, I believe. I love PNR, this was more than that though. There was a lot of depth to everything, literally when you read about Hell haha. This story was honestly so well done, thought out... I can't wait to read the next book!

Overly angst ridden drama....

Drowning in enough angst ridden drama to make any YA soap proud. What are these two supposed to be to each other ?
I mean we get two flashbacks before we’re thrown into “modern day” and they didn’t tell us a heck of a lot before we’re given two overly angst ridden teens and the drama kicks into really high gear and things get crazy and a little confusing at times on Melkor’s side...
⚠️ possible spoilers ⚠️

Ok,Purity’s family is supposed to be awful and inept and just not a very good family... ok, I kinda get that just in her name. I mean who the heck names their kid “Purity” ? Huh?
That’s a lot to live up to,or in this case down to. I don’t know . But the snapshots we’re given don’t always make her family look bad in my opinion, often its Purity that looks bad.
I mean what kinda kid at 7/8 years old is writing the Devil/Satan ? Period. Much less asking him for anything ? I guess she gets a good friend out of it but what we see is first her hiding w/Mel after she puts food coloring in her mothers shampoo, which only makes her look like a brat,at least to me.
Could have been harmless could have caused problems fo4 her mom. I’m sure if any on the women reading this had had there kids do this there’d be he l l to pay when they had to go to work after. Next time we see them “Purity’s “ ticked off at around 15 about how her dads job has been treating him and thinks spray painting a body part on to the building is the way to express her upset.
Ok. Now I can say she had a loving family that was just misjudged but at the same time “Purity” is an angry young girl then woman is prone to outbursts and isn’t the most mature.
Mal is called away because there’s a sickness that as some how decimated the hellhound community and his family needs him there more often. Not see that’s odd. A sickness that effects “Hellhounds” ? You’d think supernatural creatures like that would be immune to illness but none of it is really explained.
Ok,We come back to them both being around 18 and both rather clueless as to how the other feels and in “Purity’s “ case ( the “” just feel right) she’s kinda clueless as to how she truly feels about Mel in addition to what he’s feeling about her. They have a silly fight, both are drowning ( almost literally) in incredibly low self esteem ( which considering over 1/2 their inner monologues revolve around self loathing it gets old really fast. Or it did for me. After this fight Mal storms off in self loathing teen angst and them sadly gets soo caught up in the machinations of someone unseen but possibly led by his messed up older brothers mentor, things are unraveling down there like it’s in a hand basket down a slippery slope. And sadly Mel can barely crawl out his inner self loathing/pity to deal w/all that’s going on and keep us the readers more or less informed as to what’s going on.
While Purity scrambles for a clue or to herself to know what’s going on,and gaining a life raft in her own sea 🌊 of self loathing and despair.
Honestly I didn’t like anyone here. Other than their self pity and longing I don’t feel I really got a chance to know “Purity” or Melkor before they went their separate ways and both were scrambling for clues and giving me more more inner turmoil and angst than a whole season of a YA drama.
The idea behind this I find interesting and intriguing but I felt their was more tell than show w/everything . Purity’s family might have nit been all that great but honestly we barely spend any time w/them. Her younger brother was a d bag but otherwise we jet don’t get enough to really see or know . Sane w/this huge “calling” she always seemed “just knew” set her apart and her deep relationship w/Mel.
A few childhood pranks then a fight then over 1/2 the book apart giving us more self doubt/loathing than anything else.
To me this was just a big angst ridden mess based on a good idea. Others liked it but I don’t want more.
Thank you for your effort Ms. Faulks but this is for me.

Curiouser and curiouser

Purity is a tiny tyrant. As a child she wrote Satan and asked for a puppy. Not a dyslexic mistake, and certainly not asking for a fluffy golden retriever, though. Purity wants a hellhound and she wrote Satan himself to ask for one. What's even better is they shook on it, so he had to give her her new best friend. But, hellhounds aren't just fiery puppies, they're shifters of a sort; so, human-ish. You can't just give one away. But, Melkor was picked to come to the human world and have play dates. They grew up together, doing something that immortals and humans don't do: become friends. But Purity's family is a little crazy, and a lot not liking that their daughter has a friend that comes from the pits of Hell. But, what started out as puppy love is becoming more as they get older, and not crazy parents, not the devil or any other being from any dimension is going stop it.

Spoilers ahead:
This is a good set up. It's a HFN, sort of, as both parties are just entering adulthood. Purity was a little charmer as a kid. She is a little more hesitant, not as bold as a teen. She finds her footing, but she's been too busy being under fire from classmates for her weight, her family for her involvement with a hellhound (they know and very much disapprove), and trying to buck their plan for her life. Something that involves business school, a place I'm pretty sure that hellhounds aren't going to go, as they're guards and protectors- not accountants and business owners. Although, if an elf from the North Pole wanted to be a dentist, there's probably a hellhound with an adding machine and a set of spreadsheets somewhere out there. Just not Melkor lol. The world building is basic, with just enough in there to inform but not bog the reader. And enough left out to keep you wondering. The many POVs are a little odd but the logic behind that may be revealed in the next book. Either way, it started out fun, kept its humor but added a serious note, a very serious note, that is the basis for the next book- if not the rest of the series.

This is the first novel in the Melkor & Purity series by Kim Faulks, which is a sort of paranormal fantasy about a girl and her hellhound growing up and falling in love. The story has a satisfactory conclusion, but it’s clearly just the introduction to this couple’s misadventures.

The beginning of the story was cute. Purity is not the kind of character I’d ever want to be friends with, but reading about her mischievous pranks and the foolish, impulsive things she does to get herself in trouble was entertaining. She is, as Satan himself describes her, a hell-raiser. Melkor tends to be much more earnest; I would have found him more interesting if his character has a little more subtlety.

I liked the idea of a story about hellhounds more than I liked the execution. The worldbuilding is a little thin, and characters’ actions don’t always make much sense. You’ll need to suspend disbelief and just roll with the events of this story in order to really enjoy it. I am sufficiently intrigued with the setup at the end of this story to be curious about reading the next book in the series.

The narration was provided by HotGhost Productions. The narrator’s performance was well paced and easy to understand, and I enjoyed the character voices. I think the narration adds a lot of enjoyment to this story, so I definitely recommend the audiobook.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook by the author and volunteered to provide an honest review.

I need to write this before I forget. I have no clue how Ms. Faulks does it but she exudes so many things within the words she writes that just tug at your heart strings with both joy and light and sorrow and sadness. She makes you feel like you are both Melkor and Purity when she writes their points of view.

This is just the beginning of the journey for them, only time will tell where it leads them and I for one hope I'm there for the ride because from where I am witnessing the ride it's going to be explosive.

I've completed this and let me tell you I was blown away. This series is gonna be explosive as this couple becomes adhesive in their relationship. They have become hunters and their mission is two fold find the keys stolen from Hell Lucifer's domain, Then of course there is Deimos the hound who killed Melkor's Father.

Stay tuned because this one will be a bumpy ride as Melkor and Purity find romance along the way. I for one will be clinging to that gondola as it follows the unknown. Are you up for the ride?

I voluntarily chose to read an advance copy and have not received any compensation for this opinion.

This story has one of the most unexpected start I would have thought for a PNR. It is a most memorable start. It really set the pace for this story. I started to read/listen to this book since both characters were in another book that's connected to this world. I was intrigued with their characters so when I found they had their own series, thought I'd look into it. Wasn't aware it would be a new adult romance. Usually I don't read much new adult romance, not that I don't enjoy the few that I do. I just tend to find the characters too naive since they lack life experience. So of course some of that does affect this story and how it flows. I do find myself upset at the heroine at times but then I have to remind myself that she is young and lacks the experience to consider things through. I do like her attitude though and even though her weight (big girl here) was a hindrance in her mind, she still works hard to try and prove her worth in her journey to become what she wants to be. Overall, a good read and start to the series.

I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. All thoughts and opinion are my own.

I asked to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. HotGhost Productions does a good job in narrating all voices this book. It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn't have any issues distinguishing between characters. I do wish that I could see the specific narrators on the book since I often look for other audio books based on narrators that I enjoy.

As to the story, I don't give away a spoilers because I feel you should read the story for that. However, I will say that it is book 1 in demon/vampire/hunter series that was different from what I normally see. It had great character development and overlying story line that several twists I didn't see coming. You won't be disappointed if you give it a try!

I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Purity always had known what she wanted and to whom ask for it. As Purity’s protector and BFF, Melkor knew what he had to do. A hellhound, chaos at Hell's gate and her true destiny waiting for her was giving Purity the strength she needed to be whole. With a relationship that morphed through time and a strong sense of duty, both teenagers, were up to fight evil and more. Interesting and intriguing from the first page, good pace, drama, mystery, suspense, betrayal and an ending that left me eager for more. Liked Purity’s strong, decided and intriguing character, Hell’s drama and Melkor’s strong feelings. Also, like when the authors include secondary characters from previous stories, and we get to know more about them.

A very cute prequel, that has me hooked... can't wait to find out what happens next! The book starts off with a young girl (Purity) who happens to write satan instead of santa, asking for a hellhound pup for a friend. In her letter, she explains how she will take care of him and even take the blame for anything he may do that would get him into trouble. Once gifted, Purity and the pup (Melkor) become fast friends, growing up together, getting into tons of mischief, until the day comes that they both need to take responsibility and become adults. When Purity finds out that Melkor is in trouble, is in actual danger, she risks all for the friendship that may indeed be much more! This book is a quick, easy read and I would recommend it!

Starts “cute” Gets Gritty!!

A young Purity writes Satan instead of Santa asking for a puppy. Melkor is a Hellhound “assigned” in response. These two grow up friends; a human and a being from an upper level of Hell, who develop a close relationship which gets closer as Purity reaches age 18.

When danger looms from the deeper levels of Hell Melkor works to protect his family and Purity, and Purity takes drastic steps to ensure Melkor is not harmed.

A story of relationships, family and the magical beings who walk among us.

Did not disappoint

I read the chapters sent to my email and spent hours checking emails to see if the next chapter was out. It was so hard to wait for each chapter! I loved this story and I need to read more about melkor and purity. There is so much potential left unsaid in this story. I wait patiently to find out what happens next and to learn more about purity. I would have given it 5 stars but I found 2 or 3 typos in grammer that weren't caught, otherwise it was perfect! Thanks for writing it for us,I was addicted with the chapters in my email and now I can't wait to see what's next!

Potentially fearsome duo...

Just finished reading Melkor & Purity's introduction and I gotta say I look forward to what's to come. It's nice having a heroine that isn't perky and 'petite'. Purity is spunky, fierce and very likeable. Melkor has fire, is strong and caring. Neither one of them has too much confidence in themselves, but they care for and are willing to do anything for the other. They have the potential to be a fearsome and powerful force against all that rages against them, if they can overcome their confidence issues and believe they are capable of greater possibilities. I look forward to what comes next for them.

Excited for more

Sometimes when you read as much PNR as I do, you get bored. You see the same plots with different characters over and over again. I couldn't put Melkor & Purity down for a second. You had action, romance, a kick@$$ strong female, and a new twist on Hell and the beings that live there. The blurb pulled me in, the characters kept me entranced, and the mystery and world building kept me stuck to my seat until the end. I'm excited to see where Purity and Melkor go next. I'm excited to see what happens when one betrays Hell and it's master. Melkor & Purity will draw you in and leave you begging Kim Faulks for more!

Interesting beginning

A nice introduction to a new series. This prequel sets up for the next book nicely.

It's a very creative, interesting story with a great plotline. I love the cover and that Purity is a plus size lady. I would love to read more books with a plus size heroine in them.

I love how Purity and Melkor met, and that they grew up together and their relationship blossom from BF to falling in love. I look forward to see what happens next in their relationship and I am interesting in finding out what Arrow did to her, as they pursue the escapees.

Loved it.

The story was funny, full of action ,and leaves you wanting to read the next book in the series. Melkor and Purity will be an awesome couple in the next books of their series. In this one, you get a wonderful telling of how they began, their family dynamics, and how it shapes them into becoming who and what they were truly meant to be. And you also see, who pushed them together and have them a guiding hand . I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait until the next book is out.

Hellhound...And Hunter

Purity always knew she was more. That's why instead of asking Santa Claus for a puppy, she asked Satan for a Hellhound... And received Melkor.

Mellor watched Purity grow into a voluptuous woman that held his heart and soul, even if she didn't realize it. Mellor knew he would give his life to protect her, no matter what.

But betrayal can come from the most unlikely of places.... And Fate has very special plans...

Wowza, what a book! Action packed and fast paced, it made my heart race and my head spin! Loved it!

Santa or Satan

Lucifer is tired of getting Santa letters every year, but this year one of the letters isn't a spelling error. And all Purity wants is a puppy - a Hellhound puppy.
By the time she turns 18, so does Melkor, her Hellhound best friend. That her family hates.
But he gets called back home for an emergency that goes wayyyyy bad, and his family is torn apart. While he's gone, she goes looking for training to be a Hunter, something he would never give her info on. A lot of work building and background for a prequel, thumbs up ☝!

Format: audiobook
Narrator: Heather Murdoch

Purity has always known she’s different, the Lord of Hell knew her destiny when his first laid eyes on her as a young child after she wrote to Him, asking for a puppy for Christmas! he gave her Melkor a Hell hound.
A fantastic story spanning both the underworld and the mortal realm.
I love when you get so lost in a story that all you can see is the world within the pages and forget where you physically are, this story does just that.
The Narrator does a brilliant job at bringing this world and the characters to life.

Great story

A very nice introduction to the series. This prequel sets up for book 1 nicely.

It's a very creative, interesting story with a great plotline. I love how Purity and Melkor met, and that they grew up together.

When I saw Hellhound, I assumed they would look like hounds, but they are in person form with hounds living beneath their skin, kind of like energy.

Great read! Really enjoyed it. Now, on to the series!

Interesting take on hell

I really enjoyed this prequel and looking forward to seeing more from Melkor and Purity. I love that the main character isn't this perfect gorgeous model type as most female characters are. It was refreshing and love her attitude as well. Though her family would have drove me nuts too! Now to accidentally write Satan for a doggy for Christmas! Can't wait to read more!

Great fun

I loved the snarky humor from page one on. The characters are lively and believable without some whiny teenager crying over unfair life. Pull up your britches and take it til you make it. No crying foul in real life. Live up to your own choices and make the best of it. Even if your best friend happens to be a telephone and your rated to work for the devil himself saving the world. Recommended Reading.

From the time Purity was 5 she caught Lucifer's attention. She wrote to him, not Santa, asking for a puppy. A hellhound. Melkor is a hound shifter, her age and became her friend for life. I thought it was ironic that her mom didn't mind the friendship as much as her younger brother. When things go bad in Hell she's determined to help Melkor fight the Soulless from invading Earth. This is an exciting read and one that I really liked.

Loved this book. I loved how you showed how she came to realize that she loved her family but she didn't like them.

I stayed up all night to read this. Lucifer personality is great. He has humur and humanity in him. Purity loves merker so much, and he her. He loves her for what is inside and out. Can't wait to see them love one another and kick some serious ass.

Great story!

I really enjoyed this book. It had a great mix of fantasy and realism combined. The characters in the book dealt with what everyone has been through; falling in love, dealing with parents and they’re expectations, and hopefully, doing the right thing. Purity is who I wished I was brave enough to have been when I was younger.
