Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis by Tonya Kappes
Campers & Criminals book 8. Cozy mystery.
Mae West and friends go on a hike to the silver miners in the Daniel Boone National Forest in search of hidden treasure. They discover more than expected when a body turns up. Mae chats with all her friends to form a timeline and help find the killer.
Lots of information to be found by chatting with small town residents. No one can hide.

I didn’t know ginseng is protected and can be found in Kentucky. Cool fact.

🎧 I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Johanna Parker who has done the full series to-date. She does voices really well included the southern drawl. Since that drawl makes the narrative too slow for me, I listened to this at 1.5 which is faster than my preferred but was comfortable for this book.

Genre: Cozy Mystery

I just love this series to pieces! Whenever I am in need of a lighthearted cozy with a cast of fantastic characters I know I can count on a Tonya Kappes book. Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis is the 8th book in the series (which is a top favorite of mine) and I recommend reading them in order. You will better understanding the characters and the town of Normal if you do so. In this one, Mae and her sleuthing friends are on the search for Silver that was left behind within the national park over 400 years ago. Unfortunately, a curse has stuck one of the storytellers (or so we think) and he ends up dead! Will Mae and her gang find the real killer before it's too late? Find out by reading the latest book in this amazing series! I promise, you won't be disappointed!

Another wonderful and humorous cozy mystery in Normal, KY and the Daniel Boone National Forest. In this adventure Mae, Queenie and Abby are joined by Hank's grandmother, Agnes, and Mae's adopted mom, Mary Elizabeth as they decide to track down John Swift's silver mine and his hidden treasure. I was fascinated by this piece of history as I had never heard this story before and I'm originally from the southern Indiana/Kentucky area. I also learned about ginseng agriculture in Kentucky which I had never heard before. I love that Ms. Kappes weaves this type of information into her cozy mysteries. The plot was quickly paced, the suspects were few and the characters are lovable and quirky. I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put the book down.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

This book! I have enjoyed many books by Tonya Kappes since I discovered her. But this book! I have not laughed so hard while reading in awhile. I laughed until my belly ached and I had tears falling. I knew I was going to love this mystery when I heard it involved the John Swift tale. I heard that story when I was growing up. I knew if that tale was a part of the mystery, the Laundry Ladies were going hunting. I did not expect all the hilarity though. I just love this book! There are a couple of bodies because where Mae West goes a body is sure to follow. The mystery was well done. I loved the tie to another happening in the Daniel Boone Forest. That’s another thing I had known about for years so I found that very interesting. If you’re looking for a rollicking camping mystery this is your book.
It is eighth in the Campers & Criminals Series. You don’t need to read them in order as each mystery wraps up. The most fun, though, comes from reading them all.

This book is awesome! I love this series! The book is so fun and interesting. The characters are wonderful. I love Mae and the Laundry Club ladies. And Agnus! They are so funny. Agnus played a larger role in this book and it was so fun to read.

In this book the group go treasure hunting for John Swift's silver and adventure and murder follow. The book has many twists that keep you guessing. I really enjoyed how the legend of John Swift and Ginseng harvesting are incorporated into the book. Really interesting.

I love this book and look forward to more.

A storyteller spins a tale of treasure and a curse around a campfire. It intrigues Mae and her friends, and they decide to tag along to a primitive campground to search for the silver mines. What started out as a lark for adventure turns decidedly deadly when the storyteller falls from a cliff in front of the group. And when Mae’s adopted mother is the prime suspect in murder, she again goes about to solve the crime and clear her mom. Though the mystery is a good one, the quirky characters steal the show, with their southern charm and antics. A good story when you want a quick and entertaining read.

Eighth in the Campers and Criminals Cozy Mystery Series, this is way too much fun to not talk about! The characters – like modern-day Lucy and Ethels – are funny and appealing, well defined through actions and delightful Southern-speak. The mystery is woven real into Kentucky folklore in the Daniel Boone National Park and is a real bear to figure out. Hopefully this camping trip doesn’t bring our heroines face to face with a real bear…

Mae’s Happy Trails campground in Normal is one of the best places on earth to be, especially at the evening campfire where tales are told. This week, guests and long-time hikers/ treasure hunters Mason and Dirk tell about the annual John Swift Excursion and legend. Mason has treasure maps developed over the years from his exploration and Swift’s journal and maps from 400 years ago. Swift had hidden stashes of silver in the forest and caves.

Mae’s adoptive mother Mary Elizabeth wants to go on the hike, along with their friends Queenie and Abby. It is not Mae’s cup of coffee, but she agrees to motor them out in her camper van. Hank, her sweetie, insists that his Granny Agnes, in her 80’s, go with them. He said she knows all kinds of helpful stuff in case of trouble since there isn’t electricity or cell phone service. And when the Laundry Club ladies get together, they almost find trouble!

There is a special guest at the campground Mason and Dirk go to – an ex-girlfriend of Mason. When they broke up, she stole some of his maps. The person in charge at the campsite sent the special guest packing, but not before Mason called her names and she socked him in the jaw. Mason took an unusual interest in Mary Elizabeth’s pearls, handed down in her family, that she rarely took off. The ladies go for a short hike after hiding the pearls. When they returned, the pearls were missing, and Mason denies taking them. Mason has disagreements with others, too, but the ladies won’t let it wreck their fun.

The ladies went treasure hunting on their own. They thought they reached the Furnace, a treasure hot spot, when they saw someone fall from a hanging rock above them. It was one of the long-term hiking/ treasure hunting experts who landed in the nearby creek. Not only do they not have cell phone service, but the road is washed out from the previous night’s heavy rains, and somewhere nearby is a killer on the loose and a dead body in the camp.

Mae, who found too many dead bodies since moving to Normal, is determined to stay out of this case and get back to Normal. After all, if the very experienced trail hiker/ treasure hunter fell from up above – and there is no evidence to the contrary – why would they feel safe on the trails? It could be the John Swift curse and, if so, it’s time to get while the gettin’s good.

Whether one is a campsite camper or an armchair camper, this cozy mystery is pure fun. This challenging mystery can be read as a standalone or as part of the series. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys laugh-out-loud funny intertwined with campgrounds, Southern women, and murders that just seem to show up to torment Mae.

Assailants, Asphalt and Alibis is eighth A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery. It can easily be read on its own, but I have enjoyed following Mae’s journey from the beginning. It allows readers to watch her grow, find friends, and help develop the campground. Tonya Kappes has an engaging writing style that draws the reader into the book and holds their attention. Her writing reminds me of chatting with an old friend. A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series has quirky characters with small town charm. We also get to learn more about the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Mae West, Abby Fawn, Queenie French, Agnes Swift and Mary Elizabeth Moberly head out in Mae’s camper for a weekend of treasure hunting. They have three different maps along with John Swift’s original journals to help them with the hunt. Mary Elizabeth provided several laugh-out-loud moments especially when she discovers the camping location has no electricity, no running water and no cell service. The proper Mary Elizabeth may get dirty this weekend and Mae is curious to see her without her pearls. The mystery fits with the theme and length of the book. There is clever misdirection and good clues. While I wish it had been more of a challenge to solve this whodunit, it was fun to follow the ladies as they dig into the case. When one of the characters keeps cursing upon learning that Mason is dead, Agnes makes him quit by threatening to tell his grandma. Only in a small town would this threat work. One of my favorite scenes is when Mae is wearing her sparkly shoes, she clicks the heels together and says, “There’s no place like home.” I got a kick out of this Wizard of Oz reference. The ending will leave you with a smile on your face. There are RV Hacks and recipes from the book at the end. Assailants, Asphalt and Alibis is a lighthearted, humorous tale with a treacherous treasure hunt, pavement protestors, dangerous desperados, pilfered pearls and one cozy camper.

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Mae and the Laundry Club gals are sweet as sugar, as long as you do not cross them If you do, you will get a glimpse of southern backbone and it may not be pretty. Time spent with Mae and her friends is time well spent.

The mystery was well plotted and had enough suspects to consider and clue to sift through to keep the reader engaged. I found it a little unusual that the murder did not take place until about half way through the book, bit that was fine with me. I enjoyed hanging out with Mae and the gang.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you like southern settings, then grab a copy of this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Whenever I need a pick me up, or a little escape from the daily grind of life, I love grabbing one of Tonyas books. Her books are always guaranteed to put a smile on my face.

Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis is the eighth instalment in the Camper & Criminals mystery series . I was super happy to return to “Normal, Kentucky” and Happy Trails campground. Every time I read one of these books it makes me want to visit Kentucky and the Daniel Boone National Park. Now we add in the true John Swift Legend and I knew we were in for a good time!

Telling stories around a campfire at Happy Trails Campground is very entertaining to The Laundry Club women until one of the story teller's tall tale about murder and alibis comes true, leaving the story teller MURDERED!

Mae discovers an unheeded warning that will bring the tall tale to life if she can't end the story for good before the killer strikes again.

Its full of personality, humour, non-stop action, and plot twists which keeps you interested till the very end. I thought I had identified the killer early in the book but as I read on there were some red herrings and just when thought I had it all figured out, I had a surprise!

I cant wait for the ninth installment in this series, I highly recommend this to cozy lovers.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Another fun visit with the gals at the Laundry Club when they take the camper on the road to follow a vivid storyteller on the search for treasure! Each character has a very distinct personality that will have you laughing at some point! The plot, while being a murder mystery, is fun and wrought with twists and turns! If you haven't started reading or listening, whichever you prefer, to this series you really should give it a chance especially if you like lighthearted fun mixed with your mystery!

The Laundry Club Girls are off to find a treasure.
Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis by Tonya Kappes is a fantastic book that is set in the summertime and over three days. Most of the Laundry Club Girls plus Hank's grandma go off in search of some treasure.
Our Sleuth, Mae West
Mae West, our sleuth who is a doing a great job of running the Happy Trails Campground. She loves her job and being able to help all the local businesses in her way. At first, Mae doesn't know what to think about the campfire story that she heard one night, but then some of the Laundry Club girls talked her into going with them. Not that this was neither a good idea or a bad one really. Mae ends up finding another body with her friends and doesn't know what to think.
The Mystery
Mae West and the Laundry Club Girls are trying to solve the mysteries of where Mary Elizabeth's pearls went and what happened to the two experienced hikers. The missing pearls are a bit of a mystery since it could have been any of the three people that stayed there. Then the last two happened not near each other but within the same day. What actually happened well, you will need to read the book.
Assailants, Asphalt and Alibis CRFour Stars
Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis by Tonya Kappes is a four-star rating as it was pretty good. I enjoyed the treasure hunting with maps from different people. I liked the way that Hank's grandma took over and helped Hank out. As for Mae, perhaps she needs to relax some. Don't forget to check out her next book, Valleys, Vehicles and Victims it will be out later this month.

I've loved everything I've read by Tonya Kappes so far, but this series is my favorite. All of the books work well on their own as standalones, but the richness of the series is best appreciated by reading all of the books in order. This book was different in that a lot of the action took place away from Mae's campground. The search for treasure was fun, and especially since it was based on a real myth that's been passed down in Kentucky. The characters and dialogue are always such a treat in these books, and the mystery is just the cherry on top of the yummy, gooey sundae. This was one of the best in the series and I highly recommend it. I received an ARC of this book, but my opinions are my own.

Assailant, Asphalt & Alibis earns 5/5 Heirloom Pearl Necklaces...Fascinating Fun!

This eighth book in Tonya Kappes’s A Camper and Criminals Mystery series definitely is one of her best! Annually tourists and regular treasure hunters arrive in Normal, Kentucky, for the John Swift excursion with hopes that his journals and maps might hold the key to a trove of silver left undiscovered for centuries. Mae, owner of the campground, and the ladies of the Laundry Club have been adequately enticed by the legend and decide to join the expedition in search of riches, well, at least a bit of weekend fun. So, with no cell reception or electricity, rumors of a curse, competitive exes, a bit of mutiny among the ranks, a theft, and a whole lot of greed, who would guess murder would join in? Well, everyone!

Tonya’s writing style is always engaging with descriptive language and dialogue that illustrates well emotions, dialects, and personalities. Although her murder mystery follows the traditional cozy formula, she goes well beyond with well-developed characters, close relationships, interesting themes, an investigation with several suspects, and lots of southernisms. The murder occurs well into the story, much later than I like, but I was absorbed in the introductions, connections, banter between all the ladies, conflicts and threats, and the lead up that made me question who ultimately would be the victim. The first-person narrative from Mae’s perspective is a main draw for me. She is intelligent, clever, and realistic in her approach, and whether through blood or not, family is very important, and her connection with the ladies, labeled the Laundry Club, makes it fun. However, she missed an obvious clue to a family connection. Too much going on, I guess. But, this book is delightful, and with references to background, it can be easily read by newbies.

Enjoy the unique bonus with three recipes (Iron Skillet French Toast, Iron Skillet Hamburger Casserole, Skillet Chicken Enchiladas) and directions to make an Acorn Whistle and Zipline for a “Fur” Friend. Don’t skip the Author’s Notes offering some insights into one of Kentucky’s oldest legends about the John Swift Silver Mine and the ins and outs of the ginseng trade. Both topics add an engaging “based on” storyline.

Disclosure: I received an ARC. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

In this next book of the series Mae and the ladies of the Laundry Club have decided to tackle the legend of John Swift. It is said that John Swift had buried treasure in Daniel Boone National Park over 400 years ago and a majority of it has never been found. With several maps to go by and other treasure hunters to follow the ladies set off on an exciting new adventure. The ladies are having a great time and are looking forward to being the first ones to actually find some loot until a dead body drops on top of them while they are searching an area on one of their maps. The dead man turns out to be the leader of the treasure hunters and it looks like his death wasn't an accident. The ladies are up in arms and worried about being looked upon as suspects. Things go from bad to worse when the dead man's helper also ends up dead. It goes from bad to worse when rain washes away the road and the police have no way of getting to the campsite where the ladies are. Mae and the Laundry Club decide to do what they do best and figure out this mystery all by themselves. Can they name a killer before something else terrible happens? Follow along and take on the adventure when these fun and hilarious characters that will have you wanting to take a trip down south. I love this series and it is always such a delight to read.

This was first published on my blog "Lecture toute une Aventure"

Very good cozy to keep you entertained until the last page! I loved to read more about Mae and the gang but in this one we sure get more of Agnes, Hank's grandmother who is a fabulous character i wouldn't mind to keep seeing more of her.
While on a hunt trip together, the gang witness some feud between a well known hunter ( and story teller ) Mason with his ex-wife and others...so it becomes suspicious when said man fall from the top of a rock dead....

Mae can't let her adoptive mother be a suspect, nor can she stays of trouble so with the rest of the laudromat club the treasure hunt become the murderer's hunt.

As always with this series we get a good dosis of humour, a touch of romance and a great investigation in a perfectly balanced space. A excellent cozy that could be read as a stand alone

A Must read!

Mae West and the laundry club ladies, Queenie and Abby joined by Agnes (Hank’s grandmother) and Mary Elizabeth (Mae’s adopted mother) decide to join a treasure hunt in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Despite the warnings from Hank and Dottie that the ladies shouldn’t go, they head off in Mae’s camper van to the campsites. Once they arrive at the primitive campsites, the ladies understand their friends' concerns...there is no cell service, the roads are easily washed out during storms, and they are in a remote area with no one close by for emergencies. Despite the primitive conditions, the ladies decided they are going to have a good time and find a little treasure. On the first night there something is stolen from Mae’s camper, Mary Elizabeth believes she knows which treasure hunter is the culprit and words are exchanged. The next morning while treasure hunting they find the body of the treasure hunter and Mary Elizabeth becomes a suspect. Since the police can’t be reached Agnes deputizes herself to solve the mystery of whether this is an accident or a murder. Can the ladies make it out of the situation by themselves without anyone else getting hurt?

I love this series! I know I’m in for a fun adventure every time there is a new book. The books can be enjoyed as stand-alone mysteries or part of the series. The characters are fun, quirky, and independent with southern charm. The setting of Normal, Kentucky is anything but normal. Although Normal is a little abnormal you still get that small hometown feeling. I wish I could go camping at Happy Trails Campgrounds. Although the mystery is a quick read with the fast pace there are several twists and turns and red herrings along the way to keep the reader engaged until the end. Author Tonya Kappes is a gifted storyteller. If you looking for a humorous cozy Mystery look no further. Recipes and camping hacks are included in the book.

I voluntarily agreed to read an Advanced Readers Copy of this book. All thoughts an opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

A wonderful and funny cozy mystery by Tonya Kappes. Once again Tonya hit it out of the park with this book. This series is awesome. I never laughed so hard and loud my husband thought I was losing it. I really enjoyed how the legend of John Swift and the harvesting of Ginseng were written into the story. I had never heard of either so I learned something new today. This is one of those books that when you open the cover you don’t put the book down until you have read it all. There are many twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. Even though this is the 8th book in the series it can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend reading all the previous books so you can enjoy all the fun.

Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis is yet another cozy mystery book in the Camper & Criminals series. The story follows Mae West and her friends as they go on a hike to the Silver Miners to search for a treasure. Lots of different events happen there, from stolen pearls to a huge flood, there were also some interesting twists.

I only read the series for the atmosphere and the setting, the small town and camp setting is cozy indeed. Although the story became more complex and engaging, it’s still far from what usually grips you and keeps alert till the very end.

The characters are still likeable, but there is not much development to them, which I found bland and a bit annoying.

Overall I think it’s a nice book to read to offload after a full-on busy week, with a cup of warm tea or cacao.

I’m almost at the point where I’m going to have to stop reading these books (well, listening to them, anyway). The writing has kind of gone downhill.
Possibly it’s just me, but when writers don’t use contractions in their dialogue, I wonder if they’ve ever actually listened to people speak.
The author changes details from book to book, like how Bobby Ray has blonde curls to die for in one book and thinning hair covered by a ball cap in the next. The description of downtown Normal is the same from book to book, which wouldn’t be an issue except it’s always the same as the first book. So our main character, who has been living in this town for awhile now, keeps saying she can hardly wait to check out the shops on Main street. Really? Still?
She’s also kind of nasty to characters who are overweight.
Yes, I could stop listening if I don’t like them. So I guess I will.
I read a lot of cozy mysteries and these aren’t the worst I’ve read, but they really aren’t very good anymore. Maybe she’s just phoning them in.

Mae and her Laundry Club women decide to go silver hunting after a night of story telling around the campfire. Legend tells that John Swift left silver and counterfeit crowns buried in the area. The hunt is on. But what are all the treasure hunters hunting?

This is a fun group of characters and an enjoyable story. You do not need to read this series in order.

Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis is the 8th book in the fantastic Camper & Criminals series by Tonya Kappes. Each book is good, funny and the characters are just amazing.

In this 8th book we once again return to Normal, Kentucky where everything is all but normal. This time a couple of treasure hunters are at the campsite and tell their stories around the campfire. The ladies from the Laundry Club are intrigued and convince Mae that they should tag along with the treasure hunters and search for themselves. And so they go, up to an old site where there is no cell service, no nothing. Which seems all fine and well until one of the treasure hunters is killed! It's up to Mae and the Laundry Club ladies to figure out who did it and if they are even safe!

I really loved this one as the whole outcome was so different from what I expected. I also had no idea who did it until the end and I was still surprised! Also love the ladies and Mae, they are such an amazing bunch!!!

Campers & Criminals Book 8

This was a very fast paced, light read. Unlike previous books in the series, Mae didn't do much sleuthing to solve this case. She just stumbled upon the crime scenes and reveal. I did figure out the main culprit and reasoning fairly quickly. I liked that Agnus had more of a role in this book. She is my favorite!

A good majority of the story took place away from the campground and out in the Daniel Boone forest as groups set out to hunt for the hidden treasure of John Swift. I liked that the author kicked off the book by explaining about this Kentucky folklore and how she wanted to include it in a story. I was relieved that the Laundry Club didn't locate any actual treasure. Would have been far fetched for amateurs to just luckily stumble across it after all of these years.

The author also included the fact that Kentucky is well known for growing wild ginseng. There are lots of permits and regulations set in place to try and protect this plant from being over harvested. I thought it was rather fascinating to learn about.

I always like to read through the recipes and camping tips at the end of the book. This time I learned that you can make a whistle out of an acorn top! Might have to give that a try this Fall.
