Lady-in-waiting Amber officially spends her time managing the queen's team of ladies, overseeing servants, and managing the royal wardrobe. Unofficially, she is one of the key agents in the royal spy network. When the spymaster wants someone to investigate the mysterious Dragon Duke, Amber is quick to accept the mission: her desire for revenge means she barely has to think about it.
Trapped in his castle by a vicious curse, Rhys becomes more and more like a dragon every day. Hope is slipping between his (clawed and scaly) fingers - until Amber arrives. If he can make her love him, the curse will be broken, and he will be saved. But Amber has hurt him before. How can Rhys learn to trust her again?
Featuring magic, mystery, a castle with a mind of its own, and plenty of dragons, Book 2 in the Fairytales of Parsilon series retells the story of Beauty and the Beast.
Cute, but lacked a lot of substance. The romance was quick, prebuilt by events we never learned about. The villain was pretty obvious and seemed to have motived that appeared out of nowhere. Honestly the YA genre deserves better, and Hollins could probably pull it off but seems complacent.
Entertaining sequel. Unique and interesting beauty and the beast retelling. Again, poorly edited - mostly wrong word usage but despite this, it was an enjoyable read.
Content: Sexual: kissing only Language: multiple usage of d**n Violence: very mild
This was an enjoyable read. I liked very much the dual perspectives, although Amber's was obviously the leading one. I'll admit, that for the first quarter of the book, I didn't like Amber at all and I did wonder if the author was trying to make Amber as an unsympathetic heroine as possible on purpose. Amber cared a lot for her friend Queen Talia, but it didn't quite compensate for her cocky and bratty attitude at the beginning. However, after her arrival at the castle where Rhys lived under a curse, she improved as a character objectively and subjectively in my opinion. Objectively, because she grew as a character, and subjectively, because I started to like her more and I guess, she did grow on me, lol.
Rhys - a repenting sidekick to his evil power-grabbing ovelord/overlady? mother's schemes, now cursed after he and his mother were defeated by Queen Talia and his older brother Caradoc. Loved reading chapters from his perspective. I liked the romance. It is the story about the second chance with the same person, a flawed hero, in the package as a very loose retelling of a Beauty and the Beast. I love all of those themes, although they are hit in miss depending on the book. It was a hit this time so I enjoyed romance and reading this take on the Beauty and the Beast fairy-tale a lot.
I read this book out of order before reading the Sleeping Beauty retelling. I was wondering if I missed a lot of the backstory and how the main characters met. However, after reading the Rose Princess I can say that Amber and Rhys barely featured in it, their relationship wasn't covered in the first book, and to my surprise there was a completely different backstory to the friendship between Talia and Amber than I imagined. I had got an impression from the Dragon Duke book that they were the best of friends for years and years, while the Rose Princess indicates that actually they were more like the friendly acquaintances. Amber's and Talia's interactions were very much on the periphery in the first book. Although, you would get a better descriptions of Caradoc's and Talia's appearances. My impression of Caradoc changed drastically after I read the first book. For one, somehow it was a discovery for me that he started nearly as a flawed character as his younger brother Rhys. You wouldn't know it from this book. So, basically you can read it as a standalone, and I did this easily, although of course the world and other characters are better understood when read in order.
In this book there were also dragons (not shifters), including one cute baby dragon, a little magic, and the castle with quirks. Clean read.
I usually like beauty and the beast retelling but I found myself forced to get through this story.I didn't like the characters, they were one sided, and selfishly focused on their own goals, The spy twist just wasn't done well and I found myself not believing the world or the story. Without the little Dragon to add some interest I might have given up on the story.that's sad to say since I was really hopeful. I think this author just needs more growth.
A disappointing follow up to The Rose Princess. The premise is a fantastic take on Beauty and the Beast, but the execution was lacking. Amber is the worst spy ever.
Okay, I enjoyed the characters but though this is said to be able to be read as a stand-alone I don't recommend it. Past events play into this a lot. It was a good read but I think it would be more enjoyable if we had more background added into this book. Also a little more buildup. I was mostly done the book before they showed anything more than physical attraction, especially on her part. A good read but not enough depth. Also another point against the author they had a download another chapter if you want to read it. When I read a book I want the whole book. Not part of a book and another chapter online I have to find and download.
