A pair of grisly crimes challenges East Hampton Detective Jericho. One involves a body under a bridge. The other is generated by the discovery of a human arm in a shark’s belly.
Shocking Confessions by Walter Marks is the seventh novel in his Detective Jericho series. Each book is more engaging and endears Detectives Jericho and Vangie to the reader. Neil Jericho is a veteran police officer that relies on experience and input from the rookie, Vangie. His motto to see justice through to the end almost gets Vangie kicked off the force when she takes on a case that should have been passed down to Animal Control. Detective Jericho is facing a possible serial killer and technology allows the mysterious criminal unlimited access to his targeted victims. While unraveling these two cases; Jericho is facing a personal decision that will affect his girlfriend, Rainbow, and Vangie has to come to terms with history she would rather stay hidden and learning to let go. Will Jericho find the killer before it contacts his next victim?
Walter Marks has found his niche with the Detective Jericho series. Shocking Confessions is a novel that pauses life as you enter Detective Jericho’s world. This novel has the perfect amount of conflict, suspense, and personal drama. The story quickly progresses as the killer identifies Jericho and avoids capture. Meanwhile, Vangie is a quick study as she learns the ropes around higher rank. Justice isn’t always neat and pleasant; sometimes it is even counterproductive. I like Jericho’s skill and his insight to do the right thing, but Vangie adds a lot of excitement as she isn’t afraid to use her past to get results. Plus, she has a way of encouraging karma along. Overall, I found this is an excellent book to sink your teeth into, but reading the entire series is more satisfying.
My first of Walter Marks books and definitely not my last, a superb writing style that keeps you guessing all the way through. The story is a page turner, twisted minds of alleged killers. This is an easy to read novel. The characters work well and are easy to imagine in real life. Now to go back to book one and see where it all began
Some of the actions that police took are weird, like putting murder case on lower priority than an animal cruelty, revenging teenage by flattering his bicycle tire. Childishness.
Jericho was a detective who met a girl named Rainbow ,they loved each other. But her mom who was in jail was dying and she debated to go help her but her mom and her did not get along for many years. . Jericho advised her to go. But things changed. There was a dog found dead. A young man called police. What really happened? There were girls going missing and most found dead later. Who was this kidnapper and murder? Always young girls named Stacy or something similar it seemed. But why. A marine owner found a arm in a shark he caught. Who did it belong to? Jerichos partner Vangie was a lady cop who run into some trouble with the guy who found the dog . But why and how things turned out later.
I’ve stuck with this series despite the fact that some of the actions of the characters seem very immature and there were inconsistencies in some of the plot line between books. I was charitable with my ratings because overall I enjoyed the stories. But this one is my last. In a matter of a few chapters, the dog killer was identified as the serial killer who was killing women and then later attributed to the original teen suspect. I might have been ok with that plot disaster, but then the detective investigating the death of the dog, vandalized the teen suspect’s bike as a matter of ‘karma’ when he was competing in a triathlon. An adult acting like a petulant child and vandalizing a bike to hurt someone else is not karma. I’m out.
What can I say. It was a Detective Jericho book, which automatically says "It's Great". Perhaps the reason I like Jericho so much is that he is essentially human, with human frailties, feelings , conscience and a tremendous sense of responsibility to his fellow man. I was not surprised that he looked to the grey area rather than black or white when dealing with Violetta, even though it could have meant the end of his career. As usual, I look forward to reading more of Jericho's books in the very near future and heartily recommend this series to all who enjoy a good detective story.
I actually enjoyed reading this story mainly because of its fast pace. If you're looking for a detective series that isn't boring and moves at breakneck speed then this is for you, despite a few implausible scenarios. Veteran detective Jericho is ably assisted by Vangy his feisty sidekick and when the law needs breaking, they don't hesitate. I do feel this would translate well to a TV series. 3 and a half stars
Vangie and Jericho make a nice professional couple. The storyline is good. Writing style itself needs some work. Because these are probably all quick read books I would delve further into the history and story behind the two as Vangie learns more about how to move forward in Her new position.
Told in an unusual swapping from main character to secondary main character without warning, one thing you can count on is bad language and gratuitous sex. Ok I only read a little but that was enough to realise this book was going to be slow tedium to read if I liked reading books with bad language and sex in them.
Needing to read more of this novelist, my first impression is a criticism for the egregious lack of proofreading. While the story is fast paced and interesting, it is hard to just pass over the grammatical errors, lack of words to complete sentences, etc. Hopefully his other books will have interesting subject matter as this book has.
The storyline is wasted among unrelated cases, none seems to be the crēme of the lot. And the characters? Just too much... Even worse, when the detective flatten the bike's tyre, what is the point?
THIS WAS BK#7 OF A DETECTIVE SERIES AND THE FIRST TIME I’VE READ. I TRIED TO LIKE THE CHARACTERS BUT COULD NOT, BOTH WERE TOO UNREAL WITH UNBELIEVABLE MATCHING STORYLINES. JERICHO & VANGIE DON’T ACT LIKE COPS MOST OF THE TIME, MORE LIKE SOCIAL WORKERS OR VIGILANTES. VERY JUVENILLE. ;{
Just finished my 3rd book in the Jericho series and all were first rate as to accuracy within Police Department procedures and also geographic locales within East Hampton Town. I am a retired NYPD Sergeant, retired Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice AND a resident of Montauk.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well written and come to life in the pages. This book is believable and doesn't assume the reader is an idiot. Really enjoying full series.
This is the 1st book I read by Walter Marks. The beginning started off interesting I thought it was go into an investigation but it investigated a dead dog 🐕.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Another good book in the Detective Jericho series. However, there was even more of the police cover-up of the incident in the prior book plus another detective taking things into her own hands.
