"The many different people you will become already live inside of you..."

Nesting Beasts is a collection of poems, prose, and short stories by Naiche Lizzette Parker woven together as an illustrative and surreal coming of age tale. Branched by the defining times of her life so far, the writer and poetess uses her childhood, upbringing, great loves, greater heartbreaks, dreams, and imaginings to tell her quarter-life memoir. From old favorite poems first published in her early works Paper and Bones, Rabbit Holes, and More Than Anything to new pieces that are as vulnerable as they are whimsical, the collection serves as an ending, a beginning, and an unflinching culmination of young adulthood.

I've been following Naiche's work since Paper & Bones came out, and its so amazing to see Naiche grow as a writer.
I really enjoyed the chapter system of this book, it flowed so well, and the poems we saw again, seemed different in the context of the chapter.

This was a special read.

Nesting Beasts is told in Naiche's special language. She has a true gift at painting a scenery, and through her work you'll see her influences that derive from 19th century art. Her approach is regal and detailed, and she doesn't throw the reader off with fanciful jargon. One of my favorite books to date.

I never rate books but Naiches work touched me very deeply. Naiche is a beautiful writer and this book made me relive so many emotions. She puts feelings and memories into words in a way I have never seen before. I found myself crying and tabbing so many pages. I cannot wait to read more of her work. ❤️

★ 4.5 stars ★

It's always difficult to rate poetry and/or short story collections, since the individual poems and/or short stories can potentially range from 1 star to 5 stars. But just about every piece in Nesting Beasts gets at least 3.5 stars from me, and more than half really resonated with me, so overall 4.5 stars seems fair — possibly even a bit under. (I don't think I've tabbed so many pages since reading Hamlet in high school English.)
