Ordinary Women of the Bible
Pursued by a King: Abigail's Story
A SENSE OF UNEASE settles over Abigail as she learns of her father's choice for her husband. Something about the way Nabal of Maon looks at her makes her uncomfortable, but no amount of pleading can convince her father that there is more to Nabal than what they see. Abigail is sentenced to a life with a volatile, unpredictable man. When David, the rumored next king of Israel, approaches Nabal seeking the customary kindness of strangers, Nabal turns him away, incurring the future king’s wrath. Abigail must be swift to act in order to save her household. Nabal collapses, never to rise again, upon hearing the news of David's wrath and Abigail's actions to appease the future king. And when David’s men appear at her doorstep with an offer of a new life, Abigail must choose between returning to her father’s home, or embarking on the adventure of a lifetime.

S-L-O-W moving plot and I didn't care enough about the characters to read another 92 pages.
Too many books, too little time.

I loved this book. It is the 7th in the Guidepost series of Ordinay Women of the Bible. I think this is the best one so far. The facts of David's life and wives was spot on. I love the way she portrayed Abigail as a strong women whom David confided in and valued as a wife and confidant. It hurt my heart when she found out she would not be his first wife, even though I knew that from reading the bible. I loved the way the authors made her a part of David's dream to bring the Ark of the Covenant home to his kingdom and how he then made sure she was present to see it come into the palace. I cried along with her as she watched David dance in joy. You never forget your first love and he never stopped loving Michal. The authors made him into such a caring person in his relationship with the three wives that are mentioned and yet I knew he was a warrior and killed many people. I love the end when they say "The world would always think of Abigail-if they thought of her at all-as the widow of Nabal, memorable only for his senselessness. They would know her as the mother of one of David's sons, the sickly Chileah, who died before his 7th birthday. She would seem a tragic figure. Just another wife among many." I love the voice they gave to her and the idea that she had a hand in changing the course of history. I loved this book.

Abigail's father marries her to a wealthy man named Nabal. Little did her father know Nabal was cruel, greedy and he cheated his workers, and did not practice his faith. When Nabal refuses to help David who is in hiding from King Saul he does not know he is marked for death along with his household. Abigail fears the consequences and brings aid to David. When Nabal finds out he collapses and shortly after dies. David offers marriage to Abigail and she accepts. It is not easy to live on the run but she loves David. Abigail is a woman of faith, she trusts God. She feels if the Lord intends something He will make it happen. Abigail is David's third wife but he depends on her for advice and he follows her advice. As a woman of faith she advises prayer and trust in God. Pursued By A King is a work of fiction and portrays this wife of KIng David as one we might might describe as the mother of Israel. Diana Wallis Taylor gives you a look at what a woman's life in a polygamous marriage might be like. There are real events from the Bible such as David stealing Saul's spear.
