VANTABLACK is Ciona Rouse’s first chapbook of poems and Third Man Books debut title in the publisher’s new chapbook “C" series. It is Rouse’s quiet music played within the language of her poems waiting to scream. It is the music of place, race, sexuality, home, growing up, being grown. It is everything in the life of a word.

VantaBlack reads like a an experience, with all the spit that comes with growing up, adulthood and the overcast that clouds the things we hate and love. I’ll look for more by Ciona Rouse.

I was lucky enough to attend a reading and hear Rouse emote many of these poems. Experiencing her speak these words was incredibly moving. And reading them in solitude was no less beautiful.

It was a pleasure reading, Rouse's smart, sizzling poems. I look forward to the day when she has a full-length collection out!
