Smithsonian Institution Press is pleased to join Motta Fotografia, one of Europe's foremost publishers of photography, in presenting a series showcasing the work of postwar masters. Each book includes more than forty duotone or color images and represents an original approach to a particular theme by one of the century's finest documentary or fine-art photographers. These images pay homage to the art of dance as revealed in dancers' bodies. In his portfolio focusing primarily on performers with the Parisian Opera Ballet, Jeanloup Sieff has captured both the fleeting gestures of the individual dancers and the timeless world of their profession.

I love Jeanloup Sieff. I have one of his photographs framed on a wall of my apartment. In these pictures, he managed to capture (I think) the essence of many dancers.
