Corsets. When the word is posed, images spring to mind of stiff Victorian matrons with stern expressions and a disdain for anything out of the ordinary. Funny how things change. These days, corsets are seen in an entirely different light, emphasis on the word "different." A point made deliciously well in Fetish Fashion: Undressing The Corset. Here, in a series of over 100 provocative images, photographer Larry Utley explores just what it is that has turned this restrictive and despised fashion trend from the turn of one century into a sexually liberated fetish accessory for the turn of the next.
With a gracious nod to Madonna, for bringing the corset back into the public eye, Utley uses his camera like a voyeur, peeking into a world of corseted men and women, whose very inclusion in his book speaks volumes for their sensuously uninhibited natures. Here, under one cover, are contemporary twists on Victorian morés, theatrical expressions of outrageousness and blatant explorations of kink and sexuality. As a bonus, Utley has also included an invaluable index in the back of the book, with quotes from many of the models themselves concerning their interest in the corsetry "lifestyle."
In her introduction to this wonderful book, corsetier Autumn Carey-Adamme poses the question which is sure to be on the minds of many who approach it: "Why are we once again wearing these health-threatening torture chambers?" Her answer sums it all up nicely: "corsets are sexy." It's true, they are, as even the most casual thumb-through of Utley's book will reveal. I suspect, however, that more people will be turning pages slowly while perusing this treasure trove of delightfully sensual imagery. How can they not? Mesmerizing in its depiction of a perversely inverse world many only dare dream of, Fetish Fashion: Undressing The Corset is a fetish book with a uniquely fashionable, and altogether unrestrained, twist.
