Pleasing God

Rate this book
Life is full of choices in an average day, a woman must wrestle with a number of questions. Am I using my time wisely? Should I be doing something more, or something better? Is the activity I want to do right, of is it wrong? These questions can complicate your life and leave you feeling overwhelmed. But what if you narrowed that long list of choices down to just one? What if all your decisions were governed by one simple question: Dose This Please God? In pleasing God, Kay Smith exhorts and encourages women to think of God first and to live with His pleasure uppermost in mind. In a style that is uniquely Kay; candid, humorous, firm, but also compassionate. This beloved teacher reveals the secret to a simplified life, living it as a fragrant offering to God. Learn how to put sin in its place, yield to the Holy Spirit, praise God through trials, and offer Him even the smallest part of your life as an act of worship. You've been given one life. The choice of what you do with it belongs to you. You can live it unto yourself, pursuing your own pleasure, or you can offer it back to the One who breathed life into you, redeemed you from hell, and gave you the promise of heaven.

Kay Nolte Smith (July 4, 1932 – September 25, 1993) was an American writer. She was for a time friendly with the philosopher-novelist Ayn Rand, who was her leading literary and philosophical influence.

Smith was born in Eveleth, Minnesota and grew up in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Smith launched her literary career after her separation from the Ayn Rand circle. Her first novel was the mystery story The Watcher. Smith's Catching Fire is set in the world of the New York theater, with an anti-trade union political stance. Mindspell centres on the conflict between science versus religion, with Nolte Smith stating this fiction was written "to challenge strongly the belief in the occult".[4] Her novel Elegy for a Soprano is a roman a clef inspired by Rand, Nathaniel Branden, and the circle around them. Elegy for a Soprano also portrays the life of Jewish Holocaust survivors from Czechoslovakia and Norway. Two of her novels — Elegy for a Soprano and A Tale of the Wind — were nominated for Prometheus Awards in 1986 and 1992, respectively.

She published seven novels before her death from cancer at age 61.

It had some really good points on how to follow God, but it's extremely hard for a modern woman to follow some of her advice, such as:
not wearing a bikini (because it's not modest and God wants us to be modest) & when you're husband irritates you it's best to just pray about it instead of confronting him. Hhhmmm....

I have just past Chapter 2 and I am enjoying this book. Hope it can keep me reading till the end. Thus far, I have find this to be very inspirational and very convincing. To begin with, Kay Smith quoted " God is speaking to you all the time. He speaks through his creation..." I have encountered situation like this countless times when I am in Church during Sunday mass. Another incident that was mentioned in this book was about her close call when God spoke to her not to cross Newport Boulevard until every lane of traffic stops. This incident also reminds me of a close call I had in year 2012 in a car accident. God send me an advance message to prepare me for the unavoidable accident that is about to happen in few days time. I trusted him and did what he had prepared me for and I came out in one piece. There is also a part in which is quoted in this book that I believe is also true. Kay says that sometimes God use you as a tool to reach your unsaved husband. One Christian and the other not are being matched up. There are also other interesting part that are being mentioned in this book. It is a good book to pick up coz it keeps you reading.

I grew up in the pews of Calvary Chapel in Orange County, but I never heard Kay Smith teach. I met her once but never saw her at the pulpit. I’m glad I took the time to read her book because it was very lovely. Highly recommend.

I was invited to participate in a "lunch-time book club" at my work/church comprised of women who have been walking with Jesus for decades, all ministry leaders, mothers, and wives. I am the youngest of the four, still consider myself a "newlywed", and am not yet a mother (or grandmother), but I am more excited to have time set aside each week to have their influence "rub off" on me than anything else.

It is an excellent read on how anyone can have a closer relationship with God through Jesus. It shares how we were created to please God and ways we can do that. Once we have submitted to Jesus then He gives us the power to love and to be kind which is pleasing to God.

Enjoyable book and easy read for the new Christian or someone who has been seeking Christ for a long time. Takes Christianity from the complicated to the simple with one question and it's appropriate answer. "What would please you, God, in this situation?"

sweet

—- this is the first book I have read by Kay Smith. What a sweet spirit she has/had. Some of her references or examples may seem outdated or old fashioned. But her humility and love for the Lord definitely shines through.

Kay exhorts us to walk in this life in a manner that pleases God in all that we do and say, and think. Obedience just isn't enough, God wants our hearts!
