Summary of my review
Good detailed art style (especially in the battle scenes), interesting beginning, protagonist had a major character development, good explanations and therefore easy to follow the story.
Overpowered at some times and story felt rushed/too fast.

The Review
I'm not completely sure what to think about this one. But even though there were some elements I disliked, it was still enjoyable.

I really liked the art style and how detailed the battle scenes were.
I also liked how the progatonist wasn't having any powers from the start and gained them by himself, after going through some traumatic events. The protagonist, Hajime, had a major character development from being weak and not confident to becoming stronger and stronger each time he battles and getting a stronger mindset.
At first, I was a bit confused why Hajime had black hair, since the cover displayed him with white hair, but even this got explained and was really cool to see him transforming from black to white hair.

Since it's only the first volume and it was originally a light novel I can't really judge the book yet. But I noticed some things that aren't that appealing while reading the first volume of the manga version.
First of all, the pace felt a bit rushed:
It starts in the human world, then the characters get transformed to another world they don't know, quickly they train to become stronger. Apparently, there are only 65 levels that one could go down to adventure, as later on the creatures become too strong, but our protagonist already reached level 100 at the end of the first volume. You get what I'm trying to tell? It is just overpowered. I mean, I get it the protagonist got hurt on his way so there isn't that much plot amor, but still, he reached level 100 as if it's nothing. In general, I didn't feel any tense moments where it felt like the protagonist really struggled to win a fight, he just won, over and over again.

Overall the story is nice and it's a typical iseaki manga, but it lacks some stuff, making me give it an average tag on my shelf and therefore 3 stars. It's fine, not too bad, but things could improve. And maybe they will improve since it's only the first volume.

Start: 14. October 2024
Finished: 14. October 2024

Much more layered than expected!

This is a good average iseki, right up until the last two chapters. I’ve seen this type of RPG game in manga so many times. I was totally prepared for some drastic death that changes the main character’s resolve etc etc.

What we get is similar to Tokyo Ghoul. He’s desperate, just trying to survive in this hellish world. He gains some powers and gets his hair bleached in a similar way that Ken does. I actually like the main character more than I like Ken because of his behavior. He’s not insane and, instead, is actually quite smart.

The art was pretty good. I felt many of the action scenes were too detailed to properly enjoy. With action scenes I like to fly through them but with this one I got distracted from the story and what was happening by the art.

Looking forward to the next!!

Okay, so when his arm was cut off I kind of cackled a bit because Edward Elric had that happen to him. I was just like “please tell me you turned that into a reference.” But they didn’t since it was pretty dark and depressing. But they had the opportunity to! They said he’s an otaku but they didn’t really make that impact his thinking at all.....

4.5*

I watched the first season of the anime before I started reading this and I’ve been missing this world and it’s characters so much. So I’m all for this.

Manga Chpt. (0,1-7)

Welp~ so a class gets summoned into a fantasy world in order to save that new world.

Everyone's got fantastic stats except our male lead Nagumo Hajime, who gets villager-level stats and the basic job of "Synergist". Back in Japan, he's known as a quiet boy who gets into trouble with everyone else - especially the boys - because one of most popular girls in school treats him extra well.

It's not much of a surprise then that Nagumo gets hit by a "stray" spell while trying to escape a monster he helped hold back during a dangerous training mission, and he falls to a lower and more deadly level of the Labyrinth.

And that's of course what breaks him. He loses his arm and pretty much his sanity because he basically goes feral and using his synthesizing power somehow turns into a mecha Allen Walker as he tries his darnedest to battle his way out of the Labyrinth.

I've read a ton of antihero/villain/revenge isekai, and this one would not be one that I would recommend over series such as the Shield Hero or Villainess Turns the Hourglass. I went to watch the anime as well since it's on Netflix, and tbh the best part about the anime is the fighting sequences and the music. There's a lot missing from the manga which end up being covered in montage scenes that won't make sense unless you've got prior knowledge of what's happening.

It's not bad but it's not that great either. I like it but I don't love it. BUT because this genre is my type of thing I'm gonna continue with it. For now. We'll see.

Flags: dark storyline, gore, partial(?) nudity, a lot of fanservice [i.e. not GRL clean]

Well then. I have now read the light novel, seen the anime, and read the manga.

I have to say, the manga holds pretty true to the light novel, with only a few things changed to keep up up with the media change. Don't get me wrong, it works for the manga, and you don't lose anything, and you will only notice if you have seen or read the other formats. Obviously some of the more risque things from the light novel *cough sex cough* are left out and only hinted at, which is a shame as you think they would have capitalized on the fanservice there. But on the other hand, I completely understand and respect them for taking that route with the story.

The art is nicely done and the attention to detail is handled quite well. You get the visceral damage that is done to the protagonist, and you get a good sense of his despair. More so, I have to say, than the anime does. There is something seeing all the events that happen in the labyrinth in black and white that adds a certain level of brutality to the story.

The story, well, as anyone who has seen my reviews of this series will know, I am a huge fan of. What could have been a simple power fantasy ends up being something far, far more, and because of that is a lot more entertaining.

So out of the three medias I have consumed in relation to this series, which do I prefer?
The light novel is my favorite, the manga comes second, and the anime third.
And if you are new to the series, I recommend picking it up if you want some nice popcorn fiction to make you forget about the real world and all the crap going on in it.

*Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest Vol. 1* begins with Hajime Nagumo, an ordinary high school student who, along with his classmates, is suddenly transported to a fantasy world. Tasked with becoming heroes to save a kingdom under threat, each student receives powerful magical abilities—except Hajime, whose seemingly weak transmutation skill marks him as useless.

Betrayed by a classmate during a dungeon expedition, Hajime falls into the abyss of the dungeon, presumed dead. Alone and on the brink of death, he survives by sheer willpower, enduring unimaginable trials, and consuming monster meat to gain their powers. This brutal experience transforms him both physically and mentally, forging him into a hardened and powerful warrior determined to return home by any means necessary.

During his journey through the dungeon's depths, Hajime meets Yue, a mysterious vampire imprisoned in the ruins. She becomes his first ally, and the two form a deep bond as they continue to battle their way through the challenges of the labyrinth.

Volume 1 sets up a dark and action-driven narrative of survival, vengeance, and transformation. It explores the themes of betrayal, self-reliance, and the cost of power, establishing Hajime’s evolution from a powerless boy to a formidable force in a hostile world.

I enjoyed it. I did. Truly. Why do I sound like I am trying to convince myself? Possibly because I prefer the light novel Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest, Vol. 1. That is because the LN is a lot more detailed and the manga moves FAST. Perhaps too fast. But then the pace of a manga and LN are never 1:1 that I've seen, so maybe the next couple volumes will rectify it.

While that is what it feels like to me, it certainly was interesting to SEE the characters rather than just imagine them based on the few illustrations in the LN. I know the next few volumes are on their way so I'll be seeing soon enough. I am curious about the anime as well and hope to find a viable (and legal) streaming method.

Verdict: If you're just getting into Arifureta, this isn't an bad place to start, but definitely consider picking up the the light novels.

Good start

I have noticed that some of reviews are decrying the fact that manga glosses over many of the information presented in the light novel but I personally don't see an issue with this. Manga is a visual medium and I believe this is a great interpretation of the original work.

This is an interesting storyline. It is about a group of friends that were transported to a would that is under threat from the Demon lord. The main person is at a low level and class. When they were in the dungeon. They get in trouble and one of the main character Nagumokun teammates did a spell on him and now is it deep in the dungeon. I won't tell you more you will have to read.

When does the next one come out??? I need more!!

The only problem I had with the manga was that I was slightly confused at points and they still don't make sense finishing it but maybe when more books release Ill be less confused.

I started reading this after seeing an episode of the anime and while I enjoy the visuals of the anime the manga does a much better job telling the story.

The set up is not the most original but I like the idea so I will continue reading it because I really want to know how Hajime's mindset develope after all the trama and what he will do when he meets his classmates again.

If you don't like dungeon crawling or OP protgonists this will likely not be up your ally.

Crazy amount of action

Well this one took off right out of the gate with an insane amount of action, and drama. Doubt it can keep that level of action up, but they have a lot of room for character/world building to do still so I don't think that will be an issue.

This is one of my favorite manga (the anime didn’t do it justice)

It’s amazing story being from the bottom getting hated from everyone to the determination to survive and get stronger.
I highly recommend to people

Why am I writing this review for something I read so long ago. Bc chapter 5 is a master piece of a drawing. After this volume, the story goes… to some weird places… anyways. THE BEST OPENING TO ISEKAI IS THIS.

Enjoyable

While it's a little more abridged from the books than I would have preferred, it's better than the anime turned out to be, and hey... No crummy cgi to deal with.

I was shocked by the darkness (in a good way), and I really appreciated the accuracy to the light novel. The art is amazing, I loved how detailed and intense Hajime and the monsters were.

Reads like a dnd dungeon crawler packaged in a manga. I might pick up the second volume if I see it, but this first one was a whole lot of exposition.
