This is a clear and concise introduction to how the nonprofit sector functions differently than you might expect. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in translating their giving to real impact. As someone who works in the nonprofit sector, I would say that this short treatise is not a guide or how-to, but a jumping off point for deepening our understanding of charitable finances. Though it feels like the book almost redundantly drove home the same point that overhead ratios are not a sufficient measure for understand a nonprofit's financial management- I would argue that this is a thesis worth hearing as many times as it takes for us to shift our gaze from an organization's overhead to its impact.
Inspirational. I love Dan Pallotta's TED Talk and watch it at least once a year. This book is even better. I like the bite-sized chapters for ease of reading. And the concepts are valuable and important.
"Imagine if we had an American where everyone was aware of, active, and contributing to the cause." (Ch 20). I can imagine it and I want that for us...the moving away from consumerism to compassion.
Dan Pallotta really challenges society/donors/philanthropists to think about the work done by non-profits and charities. By not just focusing on overhead/admin costs. What is the impact? Is the third sector making a real difference?
Quick and easy read about the state of charitable giving and important things to consider. Really made me rethink how we view charities and how best to support.
