Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh, CBE, who also wrote under the pseudonym Barbara Vine, was an acclaimed English crime writer, known for her many psychological thrillers and murder mysteries and above all for Inspector Wexford.
A very strange little book and I mean 'little'! It's very short but also compellingly weird. Many of Ruth Rendell's books have a quirky aspect to them and this small offering with it's overtones of the werewolf myth was one of the quirkiest I've read.
A short story that made me smile, as I got to know the main character. He’s very eccentric, yet I could still identify with his feelings. The story ends abruptly, but I agree with the author’s choice. I’m not sure the story would be as memorable if the ending were handled any other way. Yes, it is slightly weird, which gets the reader thinking and anticipating what will happen next to the end.
Ruth Rendell is truly an excellent writer. Efficient yet incredibly vivid. The reader can feel the erie cluttered Victorian family house, the bear fur rug, the snow leopard skin, and the wolf suit. The mother and son bond, and the shrewish fiancé. A strange and unforgettable wee tale.
