Pack Bardot #1

Finding You

Rate this book
Fleeing the only home I've ever known, in the middle of the night, with only a single bag of belongings to my name - isn't at all how I thought the rest of my night would go when my eyes finally closed and I fell into a restless sleep. Dreaming about uncharted territories of Hell and evil Chihuahuas.

But running from the monster that's invaded my dreams and turned them into nightmares was a welcome reprieve. Even if there was actual cardio involved.

Stumbling into Pleasant Falls, Oregon definitely wasn't in the plan. A nowhere dot on the map that my mother chose at random. Whatever the case may be, I'll always be thankful for the guiding force that led us here. To the other half of myself that I never even knew I was missing.

While I've never been happier, this tiny, unsuspecting town has secrets. Ones I'm not so sure I want to unearth. But where there's trouble, I'll find it. More accurately, my smartass mouth will. No matter what new nightmares I have to face, they won't break me. I've lived through them once and I'll do it again if I have to.

Because finding you...

...that makes all the hurt worth it.

So cringey. So many things wrong with this. Struggled to get through. I still to this day wonder how married, real life adult authors write things this incredibly unrealistic about romance and teenagers.

What is it with these self proclaimed “socially awkward” YA FMCs who every adult (and just everyone in general) instantly worships and admires? That overused, unnecessary snark that always results in every adult laughing and the occasional “oh sweetie I haven’t seen my husband laugh like that in years but you, you random teenage girl with your forced, not-so-inventive, rebellious quips, you made my husband laugh. I’m so grateful for you”.

Something that really actually made me mad:
the stereotypical gay best friend was incredibly bad taste. The minute she spots Chevy, before they even have any dialogue, she thinks “he is fabulous. He must be my new BFF” (barely even paraphrasing here, look up the lines, she says that for real). Uhhhh is that offensive or is that just me? Chevy has no character other than being the sassy gay bff. He calls her bitch, ho bag, whore, etc. in what seems like every single line of his conversation. Being gay isn’t a personality and it’s messed up to have him as comic relief, sympathetic friend, reliable support system (after two weeks total of friendship, might I add) etc solely by using him as a flamboyant stereotype.

Also, the level of cringe with that relationship... my god. At one point he refers to himself as stranded in a desert and she is his sparkling spring. Shut up about your thirst desert, you predatory creep.
If the Lizzie McGuire movie taught me anything, never trust a man who says shit like “your eyes shine with the light of 1000 suns” or “my veins thirst for you”.
Run, girl. And run, everyone expecting a good read.

Holy Cow. I planned on just reading a little and going to bed. Fast forward to 1:55am when I'm finishing this book and now I am up and tired but it was totally worth it. This book is fast paced from the get-go. There will be some spoilers so stop reading now if you don't want to know.

Right away, within the first 2 chapters of the book, you are introduced to the hell that Indy and her mom are living through. It is left out why her dad is the way that he is until much later on in the book. So I'm not going to lie, even I, an avid paranormal reader, was trying to figure out if he was a shifter or an a-hole. Her mom endures years of abuse and Indy is mentally traumatized to listening to it. He dad even abuses her at one point and that is the point that her mom said enough is enough. Yes, this is within the very first two chapters!

Mom does what a good escaping mom will do and saves. She doesn't just save, she gets documents to make everything look legit. She manages to buy and hide a jeep and come up with a get-away plan. I was also holding my breath reading the get-away hoping no one got caught.

I have not come across a bantering and funny mother/daughter duo like this since my years addicted to the Gilmores.

After the escape they drive for about 2500 miles until reaching their adorable and well decorated 2 bedroom house sanctuary; finally free they just relish in going grocery shopping and acting normal because normal and freedom were stripped away from them by Indy's father. Indy is enrolled in H.S and has to show up the next day. While grocery shopping she runs into Chevy, a gay and hilarious character who quickly becomes her best friend. I cannot wait until book #2 because while I love Chevy, his character is not developed completely. Everything about him is well written and there isn't a question left hanging about his loyalty to Indy and eventually Dax but his past is always left out and all we really know is that is parents are health nuts and he now has a hankering for sweets.

Day 1 it is the same as most YA paranormal books. Typical Douche bag character and Queen bee trying to make the new persons life miserable.

As Indy walks into class she meets her soul mate....and it is very obvious to anyone who reads these style of books. I cannot say enough good things about Dax. He is constantly making sure she is ok, wants to see her happy and his letter count down on her birthday is adorable.

There is a cliffhanger and it will be interesting to see the character development of Minnie. All in all...this is a fantastic fast read that will have you laughing and on the edge of your seat...or, in my case, up WAY past your bedtime when you have things to do in the morning.

There were a few errors that couldn't be overlooked but all in all it's a cute story.

Am I the only one that thinks Linden's wolf is about to make an appearance?

I'm other books, the wolf can be suppressed by some kind of physical or emotional trauma... Her father changed when she was six, which is well before puberty, right? I'm this.book, the wolf presents at puberty... So, with all the emotion/mental trauma, it stands to reason, that her wolf was.suppressed, right?
And with all her instincts, and growly behaviour acting up...who's to say, little wolfy isn't waking the he'll up?

YA/Insta Love/Single PoV

SYNOPSIS (of 2 Books): This is set in a world where there are shifters but humans do not know. The FC, Linden (17 years), and her mother run from an abusive father and find themselves in Pleasant Falls. There Linden falls immediately for her economics teacher and discovers that she is half wolf and her mate is a wolf shifter. There are two wolf packs in the area and they are enemies. Linden gets on the wrong side of the son of the alpha of Pack Amos who are rivals to Pack Brardot from which the FC’s mate comes and this stirs up the bad blood between the two packs resulting in violence.

Heat Level: 🍆/🌶️ The first kiss does not occur until book 2 and there is only one hot scene which was luke warm at best with it being a first for both the MC and FC.

In summary this is a young book aimed at teens in my view. The characters come across as young and the writing is relatively juvenile with some irritating grammatical and editing errors. I found the FC to be annoying and the MC to be pretty pathetic really. The romance element was not just instalove but within a day or two the FC was talking about marriage and children - at 17. There was no building of the relationship or any real depth and the world building was pretty much non existent as was the character development. There is some angst and violence which seems a bit abrupt intermingled with some elements of female trafficking and abuse by Pack Amos. The climax of Book 2 was particularly weak and didn’t really make any sense. It was like the author decided that they couldn’t be bothered to put in any effort.

Overall this was not for me as it lacked depth and engaging characters.

This reads like a Twilight fanfic, spider monkey reference and all. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either. For the most part I’d give it a neutral rating all around, except for two things.

One, she did not need to be 17. She was so close to 18, so do us all a favor and just round up. I realize Dax is only 21, but the fact that she’s still in high school and isn’t a legal adult until the final chapter of the book gave me the ick the entire way through. If Dax weren’t her teacher, it would have been fine. The factors combined don’t add anything to the story except to give them a reason to wait to bond, and that’s a weak choice regardless.

Two, the conflict throughout is barely there and then shoved in all at once in the final chapter. The pacing is not quite right, in other words. I will not be reading book 2, except in summary form. This story wasn’t compelling enough for me.

Feral parent, feeling abandoned and frightened. Linden and her Mother sneak away from her father and make a run from her abusive father. They head far away to a new town. To start a new life and a new beginning. New name, new school, new friends a clean sweep of everything. Sadly they end up in a small town run by two rival pack of wolves. Two different philosophies on how to run their packs and two different ideas on how to live their lives.
Early on Indy (pet name from her Mother) is noticed by the son of one of the pack alpha's and not in a good way. He
is mouthy to her new friend and she jumps to defend her new friend. Later in the day she feels an attraction to her new econ teacher that is a young guy.
The book leaves you wanting more but you will her oreo addiction and her trip to the spa will leave you in tears!

It's good

It's actually a decent read. Ends on a cliffhanger but the whole series is out. Yay. The characters are all lovable except those that are not. I feel like Dax and Lindens relationship hits a fast forward at one point. I understand they are mates but it did get a little cheesy. Linden is hysterical so I deff enjoyed the book. Will read the next. 3 stars because I didn't love it and I save 5 stars for the ones I do. I would do 3.5 because it's one of the better mates books I have read recently. Wouldn't mind reading more of this authors material. But not a big fan of the cover, would say I avoided this book for a while because of the cover. Some covers bring you in some make you skip a book. Weird how that works.

I loved this book! Most novels that have heroines with a rough past are written as shy and introverted, needing a guy to become strong but Linden is a force to be reckoned with all on her own. Her relationship with dax, although definitely insta love, is beautiful and amazing. They arent perfect but they love each other and bring out the best in eachother. They face a lot of things through the novel and there is plenty of drama. The absolute best thing about this book is that it is hilarious. My family was giving me strange looks while I read this cause every few seconds I would bust out laughing. For sure a 5 star book and I would 100% reccomend!

Enjoyable softer shifter series

Damn! So I wasn't really sure about this read, it's a lot softer then any wolf read I've ever read, but I had to remind myself just because others always march to the same drum doesn't mean that this one can go in a totally different direction an be just as good. That was on me the reader, when I got over my book judging I ended up liking it. I will say I definitely seen all this playing out the way it did, yet already knowing still didn't take away from it be any less enjoyable. The cliff had me gripping the sheets! S**** is about to go down, and I'm counting on skull getting cracked dammit!

Ok ... I really liked this book. I thought the characters Harper created were very good and I enjoyed them immensely. Now you're questioning my 3 star rating. I think this book deserves four stars, except for the fact that it was so predictable! Enough so, I had major anxiety waiting for her to be kidnapped before the binding. Don't deny it, we all knew it was coming. I mean, I'm pretty sure I can even predict book 2 before I've even read the blurb. It might have been better to not have drawn it out so there could have been some resolution before the end of the book.
And don't get me started on the plot holes!

Could not finish. Plot not viable

I’m sorry… I couldn’t… the plot just wasn’t believable. At all. Especially the fact that a 21 year old was a teacher… most people graduate at 17/18 and then you need a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science followed a Bachelor of Education… so… at least 6 years. And that’s IF you get a full time teaching job right out the gate, but most get part time (substitute teachers)… I understand his family founded the place… but still… Also, she finds out about the supernatural and doesn’t bat an eye? Even after finding out how it impacted her childhood… no. Just nope

The story was nonexistent. It literally started with a rushed beginning, a rushed romance, and then a rushed cliffhanger. I couldn't even get the basis of the characters. I also hate insta-love stories so this was a huge negative in my eyes. The female comes off with a fun personality, but she kind of contradicts herself by being "in the dark" or "helped" all the time. And where was the alpha persona from the male interest? What's with the whipped puppy dog watered down version of the future alpha? I don't know. This story did not resonate with me like at all.

If you're looking for a story about a teenage girl finding out that her mother is keeping a family secret from her that will forever change her life this is the book for you. This story follows Linden a seventeen year old girl who had to leave her home behind, and start a new life with a different identity. When she starts at her new high school she develops a crush on her teacher only to find out that her feelings aren't one-sided.
Overall Rating: 3/5 Stars (I will definitely be reading the rest of this series).

Ohh My Goldness!

Ok, just a side note.
I usually take screenshots of funny or meaningful things I read in books for 2 of my daughters
(I have 4 daughters and 2 sons, but only took book nerds like me)
But with THIS BOOK....
I was like the heck with it, and just sent her the book.
I was literally wanting to screenshot each page!!!
I love it.
I do hate that it isn't "Finished"
(Ends on the cliffhanger)
But I am MORE than happy to buy the next 2!
You are an AWESOME writer and seriously, this book was phenomenal!

Interesting but overly wordy sometimes

I liked the story overall. The characters are interesting, and the plot is intriguing. The hero is devoted to the heroine early on, but it's still a little slow burn. What I don't like is that it gets very wordy and overly floral in parts. I love words, but there is too much meandering explanation at times. I also thought that the author spotlighted moments of humor in a blatant way, in a "Isn't she cute" sort way. It feels disingenuous. Still, the story is exciting and mostly kept my interest.

Cliches abound, editing does not

So, there's just about every single high school werewolf cliche ever written in this book. All of them are just mashed together. What isn't present in this book is editing. Missing apostrophes, misused homonyms and incorrect words are throughout. The world building is subpar and the character development is lacking. I have no plans to read anything else written by this author.

Highly recommend!

I just completed the series and highly recommend it. It deals with serious themes, but don’t the author treats them respectfully. Best of all are the many—many laugh out loud scenes liberally peppered throughout each book, which are necessary to breakup the dramatic tension. Personally, I could have done with a less f-bombs, as it distracted from the dialogue and storytelling. But l look forward to reading more from this author.

Well worth the read!

I started this yesterday and in 1 day finished all 3 books. I swear I have never laughed so hard in my life! I am so in to shifter books so I thought why not give it a read, and honestly I would read this over and over! I laughed and cried then laughed some more, I kept having to stop at funny parts and read them to my husband cause he would look at me like I was crazy! I can't wait to read more books by M.K. Harper!

- the amount of cringe I got from this book 😭 it had some of the most unrealistic dialogues I’ve ever read. I truly believe there’re no teen in this world that would introduce themselves to a senior hs class and do a curtsy, and follow that by saying:

“as for a fact about myself (…) so hard to narrow it down to one, because I’m such a delightful array of interesting, but if I have to… I’d say I have a love and hate relationship with Oreos. Love because, Oreos. And hate because they make my ass big.”

- the excruciating pages of her discussing a wax job with her bff, mom, and future mate made me skim the rest of the book because I found my limit.

- not only was the dialogue off-putting I also found the relationships not natural at all, even the “villains” were so two dimensional that I had a hard time focusing on the plot and premises because I could not connect to any of it.

- I love the cliches of the werewolf romance genre but this book totally felt short for me, personally.

This series was a total escape for me. If you want serious, this isn't it. This is a feel-good story with some drama and action mixed in. But mainly it's just a warm and fuzzy series. I love this author's sense of humor. It hits me and I love it! I laughed so many times reading all 3 books.

Don't go into this thinking you're getting some sort of Twilight thing happening. This is much more lighthearted and more adult.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I enjoyed that from the very beginning. I really liked the characters, too. I would recommend for sure. I don’t think I’ll continue though, just because I didn’t like the ending, and the trigger warnings going into the next one don’t mesh well with me. I might come back to it at a later time, when I am in the head space to deal with that, but not right now. Over all, a good book though.

3.5. Really super cute book. Now that Linden and her mom are free of her father they can really start living. New town, new hopes and dreams. She never expected to meet Dax and be welcomed into his family. Unfortunately jealousy always rules its head.
There’s some good character growth in opening up after living in fear for so long.
Unfortunately I do have to add a point to my kidnapping tally.

Funny and charming main character

One of my favorite shifter books in this genre, this book has a great story and the main character is hilarious and charming to the point where you wish you could meet her in real life. The only thing that puts this at a 4 star and not a 5 is there is some spelling and grammar issues that I noticed.

Amazing read

I have not laughed while reading a book in a very long tine. I can’t even tell you how awesome this first book is. You will just have to read it fly yourself. I couldn’t even read the next book without leaving a review. I honestly had stop reading go back and read some of the most hilarious moment to my husband.

Amateurish

So bad I couldn’t finish. Very amateurish. The snarky remarks were overdone and fake funny. The relationships had no depth and no chemistry. I mean she was spending the night with her teacher two days after she met him and her mom was okay with it. She and her mom were more like buddies than mom and daughter. Was not good at all.

This book falls into the category of one of my biggest issues: a FMC who is abused, escapes, and then miraculously becomes a strong, outgoing, opinionated, takes-no-crap person the second she finds freedom. It's just so not believable! Add in an insta-love fated mate the second their eyes connect, and I'm left pretty unsatisfied by the whole thing.
