Go with the Clouds, North-by-Northwest, Vol. 4

Rate this book
Unbeknownst to Kei, his little brother Michitaka has a dark power and an even darker history. Freyja has gone into hiding to escape him, but Kei helps Sigrún track her down—exposing her to potential danger. Meanwhile, a mysterious detective is hot on Michitaka's trail...

Against this backdrop of tension and fear, Kei continues to explore the stark beauty of Iceland, though nothing in his new surroundings could be starker or more beautiful than Lilja. As their mutual antagonism reaches new heights, could something else be developing between them?

In Giappone così come in Islanda.

I'm super into Aki Irie's art in this series. There's just consistently epic two-page scenery shots, great manga panel layouts, character art, and food, and I'm here for it. This series also has the unique distinction of being the only manga series I know to take place in Iceland, and I do love unique premises. I'd be misleading readers though if I didn't mention that not a whole lot is going on story-wise. It's like a magical realism slice of life series, but with short little vignette stories that flesh out the backstory of Kei, the series' protagonist, and his younger brother Michitaka. Neither of them seems like they had a good history growing up, but as readers we're kept mostly in the dark about the past and the history, and instead are just along for the scenic ride.

If I had to compare this series to something, it'd be like roadtripping Getbackers in Iceland. Aki speaks(?) to cars/vehicles(/maybe machines too?). Michitaka seems to have strong rapport with animals. There's an element of magical realism to their "powers" (and I use the term hesitantly because it's nothing flashy, nothing overtly spelled out for the readers) that makes the entire stay in Iceland something mysterious. This particular volume, though, has some low points. I'm not super into the fan service-y interactions between Kei and Lilya in this volume, and I hope things improve in the next one. I'm still all in on wherever this series goes from here, though.

Aki Irie fills this fourth (ignore the title info as this is volume four) volume with some gorgeous art. But, it can too often descend into crass fan service. The story even gets on track with Kei back on a job and the mystery developing around his estranged brother. No doubt, the gifts Kei uses to find people by communicating to machines manifests itself differently in Michitaka... then there’s that whole ”power corrupts...” adage. This is not necessarily a series I would recommend, but if you love beautiful illustrations and meticulously textured backgrounds Irie sensei delivers.

spoilers ahead maybe

tonal whiplash continues. first bit of this is a raunchy romcom vibe that results in Lilja slapping Kei's butt, and Kei then somewhat gratuitously groping hers' (which: why??), when then immediately goes back to our murder plot, which then later peters out as our murderer boy DISAPPEARS INTO THE WILDERNESS instead of allowing for a confrontation to happen, and then maybe we're back on the "romance" again (but I do not find it romantic, since neither Kei nor Lilja feels particularly fleshed out as characters).

anyway I have one more vol of this checked out but it is not working for me. I am feeling disgruntled.

bye

Michitaka is intriguing and mysterious; I like that we are given more background on his time in school and what stood out for me was how he thanks his classmates. Kei takes a step back from the spotlight, allowing other characters to shine. I wish there wasn't any "accidental touching of womanly body parts" as there isn't any point to it; this seems to be the easy way to make conflict between characters.

In this volume we learn more about Michitaka and what he was doing in Japan before he left. Kei finds Freyja and hears her side of the story. Michitaka disappears before Kei can confront him with what he has learned. Kei gets a cold and is cared from by Lilja and Katla. Lilja, Jaques and Kei go on a trip.

I really enjoyed this deeper dive into Lilja's personality and story, and the hilarious 'relationship' that she has with Kei. The art continues to be absolutely gorgeous, and I can't wait to grab volume 5!

Pacing was a little off in this one. Kei's thing with Lilya continues to be not that interesting and weirdly sexual. Big plus again for the art style and the landscapes.

Lilja is once again very sexualized in this volume but she does slap and sass back this time. The mysteries around the younger brother continue.
