Being a chameleon demoness already made things tricky, but did it need to be this difficult? All Dahlia wanted was her freedom, but first, she needed to buy out of her promised bonding, a promise that was made for her before she was even born. Almost a century of trying had taken its toll, and she'd done things she wasn't proud of. Lost parts of herself along the way and flirted with the darkness inside her. And it flirted back. She told herself it would all be worth it in the end, but before she won that battle, everything in her life systematically blew up in her face-one piece at a time. Blaming it all on the beautiful, egotistical vampire who showed up in her life would be easy, but it started long before he arrived. With his help, she might succeed, but Dahlia wasn't sure she could trust an outsider-not even one sent by Lucifer himself. Dahlia was standing on the brink of having everything she'd ever dreamed of, but she also risked losing it all. Was her freedom really worth the cost?
Takari Hunter was born and raised in Iowa but has since lived in many different places within the United States. She moved back home when her son was still a toddler and stayed while he attended school. Now that he’s graduated, she’s unsure where the winds will carry her and her cat next; she loves to travel.
Takari enjoys spending time in her flower gardens, where the fairies live. They whisper such amazing tales to her while she’s taking care of the plants. When she gets the time, she also likes hiking in the woods, there are always plenty of fantastical tales and creatures to be found. Takari has always enjoyed immersing herself into fantasy over real life.
She’s always wanted to be a writer/storyteller and started at a very young age by making up stories to go along with her picture books—her stuffed animals were a captive audience. Takari feels very blessed to finally be at a place in her life she can take a chance at telling her stories to the world and hopes the world will enjoy them as much as she does writing them.
Never in my life have I so desperately needed a breath of fresh air - and reader, I got it. This book has FRESH comin out the wazoo.
Betrayals & Broken Promises doesn't commit to one genre but dabbles in a few. In a world of demons living side-by-side with humans in what they call 'Hell', there's a definite UF undertone to the book. However, as the story progresses I started wondering if I should classify this as a romance, or even a coming-of-age story. Because despite the fact that the MC is 200-something years old, she's doing a lot of growing in this series.
So, before I go off on that tangent, here's the setup of the book. Dahlia is a chameleon demoness: she can transform into any other species of demon at will. However, she can't do so in public, because chameleons have hidden their existence from all other demons for millennia. Problem #1. She has very close ties to her family and community, who are the only ones who know her true identity, but that means she has to put up with a nasty mother and a betrothal to a man she can't stand. Problem #2.
So what do you do when you have an evil mom, an engagement that's gonna take a lot of money to break, and a knack for secret identities?
You become a killer for hire. You know, like any sane person would. Problem #3.
So Dahlia gets in some trouble due to her job (and various other nefarious schemes) and the plot sets off.
My favorite part of this book is the focus placed on familial relationships; the good, the bad, the cyanide-level toxic. Dahlia struggles throughout the story with her need for affection and approval from a family that's been the central focus of her life for centuries, and with her need for independence and space from the mother that's only ever disappointed her. Without this tether to Earth, if you will, Dahlia may come off as fickle, or distant, or hard to understand. It's her complicated and down-to-Earth relationship with her family that really shapes her character and allows you to relate to an ancient, beautiful, half-crazy demon.
High hopes for this series - the amount of work, thought, and love the author put into the book jumps off every page, so I know good things are ahead.
I am sorry to say but this book was a horror to go through.
After seeing all the positive reviews from those who got ARCs I was so curious I almost pre-ordered this, thankfully I didn't because I seriously don't know how this book got more than 3 stars.
Dahlia is a chameleon, she can change into various paranormal species. Her mother has bonded her to a guy she hates and she's trying to make enough money to be able to break the bond. Her mother is a grade A bitch and seeing as Dahlia is 200 and something years old and she makes her own money as an ASSASSIN I don't know why she would have to bend to her mother's will. Also what was the deal with the "mommy and daddy" thing she had going on with her parents. This girl acted she was 18 and just finding her way in the world.
This book had neither betrayals nor broken promises. Everything had to do with Dahlia's mother being a very horrible person and Dahlia caving to her demands like she was dependent on her. Even her father and brothers were spineless. It literally made no sense that her mother was running things. The romance was non-existent. The ending with Azreal made me roll my eyes.
I know this was a debut but I think it was horrible. The next book should revolve more on Dahlia and less on her crazy mother. The men in her family shouldn't be such wimps, the friendship with Cassia was just on the surface and should have more emotional depth than them just saying "bitch" all the time. Nothing could save this book for me. I hated everyone. I am not reading the next book.
I'm SO deeply sorry I let this book sit on my TBR pile for as long as it did. If it wasn't for a review that I read about it calling this a very original take on paranormal creatures with excellent writing I would not have picked this up when I did. This book was everything that that reviewer said and so, so, so much more!
I loved the sheer amount of paranormal creatures the author decided to include in her universe. I also loved the original take on chameleons because even after reading paranormal romance and urban fantasy for the better part of a decade I hadn't come across something like that. Though by the end I did get a tad bit confused so I'd really appreciate a glossary of paranormal creatures with general details on their magic and how they look in future novels of this series.
Dahlia was a very interesting and complex character to get to know! Though to say her luck ran out and everything piled up on her throughout the duration of this book is putting it so, so, so mildly. There were times she made me laugh out loud (which a book hasn't done for me in years) and I was legitimately angry on her behalf with all the crap she had to deal with. I also liked that she made mistakes but learned from them while being held accountable.
Personally, I wished the romance sub-plot was more prominent in this book. I have a feeling that it's going to play a much bigger part in the series going forward and I'm excited! Though I'm very much still on the fence when it comes to Edwin. I like him when he's sweet, but then he turns into a douche bag, but then he goes and does something nice for her, but then he gives her a piece of his mind unprovoked.
The ending was exciting but also without many answers. After reading that epilogue, I'm even more interested in Edwin and his backstory. The villains were something else in this story as well. I lost count of the number of times I wanted to wring their necks personally. Long story short, this author knows how to weave an incredible and complex story with flawed and imperfect characters in an exciting new universe of her making. I'm excited for any and all future books by this author if she keeps this up!
A Note: The cover is AMAZING. Well done covers make the story shine that much brighter and every penny the author put into that cover is worth its weight in gold.
My Favorite Quotes:
"Sinking into insanity would be better than enduring a waking nightmare."
"I've only ever been a pawn for someone else to use for their own purposes, but I'm tired of being pushed around somebody else's chessboard."
"I could be a stubborn, vindictive b*tch when provoked, and death seemed like a serious provocation."
”I knew my duty: protect the community at all costs. The masquerade of myths was a tricky dance. One wrong step, and the whole thing would come crashing to a halt.”
Hands up I'm a wee bit biased in my opinions of this book, but I don't think I need to be to recommend this. It’s genuinely awesome!
Some will love it right away, for me it was a grower. The first half did have a lot of world building and character intros, it’s a new world with some original concepts that need explaining. So go with it, once that’s over and you get into the nitty gitty of the plot. The tension rises.
actual footage of me during the last 30%
By the end I was 100% behind where this was going! In fact I’m really excited about it. This excited
In not your average UF where the FMC is a ready made ass-whooping, sword wielding, Kate Daniels type.
Dahlia is a W.I.P.
That’s work in progress. She’s not perfect, and thats not something we see very often. She makes mistakes, and admits when she’s wrong. She’s very relatable. Yes she’s an assassin by trade, but, that’s a human assassin. Girl has skills but shes just not ready to take on all of demonkind. Yet. "I wasn’t a trained warrior, and I wasn’t equipped to kill this many demons on my own. Humans without magic? No problem. Demons in full possession of their abilities, including the ability to heal? Problem."
Things are complicated for Dahlia, she’s a chameleon who’s race is in hiding from the other demons. Using “masks” they can change into other demons forms, and they get those races abilities when they change. She’s also been promised to mate another chameleon, a contract she’s been trying to get out of for the last 95 years. To put it mildly, he's not a keeper.
One word to describe the relationship with her intended mate and her mother . Frustrating. Like really frustrating. It’s a complicated mother/daughter situation and I really wanted Dahlia to act out on how she was feeling.
And by act out I mean kill everyone.
But it’s a little more realistic than that.
The most interesting development came in the form of Lucifer and his Seven. They’re the ones to watch! I can’t wait for more of them. It’s easy to read and by any standards its incredibly accomplished, even more so because this is a debut novel.
It’s a slow burner with a female lead who has loads of room to grow. Getting to see her develop into that UF heroine we all love, it’s going to be the best! There a few surprises and a lot of questions but for me it’s all about what’s to come next!
I will say this-I really like the world building and all of the different demons and species- I especially liked that Chameleon demons could take on traits as well as the appearance of the different species---but I did have some questions about the plot.
So quick background--> In this world there was a war a long time ago fought between Michael and Lucifer where most demons took sides- except for the Chameleon demons. Because of this they were targeted as scapegoats for a lot of anger and resentment by almost everyone until they were nearly hunted to extinction.
However, some survived and rebuilt their community in secret- which is where this story starts. We have our h, Dahlia who has struck out on her own away from her insular community and well off family in order to get away from her toxic mother, and to avoid bonding to her duplicitous and cruel intended mate.
She has bargained for a 100 years before having to complete the ceremony, and with only 5 years left on her contract she is starting to get worried that she won't achieve an out-especially with her mother breathing down her neck and manipulating her to push up the date.
This unfortunately isn't the only thing going wrong in her life. Keeping her life a secret from other demons is difficult, especially when it comes to her friends--but when her favorite Aunt goes missing Dahlia and a mysterious Vampire named Edwin(who knows her secret identity) have to team up to figure out what is going on-and who has it out for the Chameleon demons.
Makes me relatively sad that the second installment isn’t out.
So. Chameleons....oh la la
The fact that we delved into some other demon species not commonly noted in fantasy fiction had me a bit excited. And not just chameleons but others like gorgons, valrons, etc.
What a treat.
I will say I did enjoy this book. I may not be screaming at the top of my lungs of my overwhelming love; but rather... like reclining in a comfy sofa by a warm fire with a glass of wine... type of enjoy.
The characters: Dahlia: oh, honey. Stubborn princess looks good on very few people and while I admired her resolve, she was highly annoying to me. She was an emotional soufflé in this book. Hates mommy, but wants familial acceptance and love. Wants autonomy but her choosings of battles were ill-placed. It was all very taxing, watching her just continue to flounder about in navigating all of the craziness. But I can’t blame her. *shrug* Edwin: I knew he had to be Azazel. Because let’s face it everyone. Say it with me: NO ONE CHOOSES THE HOT MALE LEAD TO BE NAMED EDWIN. No, no, he’s too special for a boy next door name. He needs a well and proper demon name to go with that hotness he’s giving off. DISCLAIMER: I am not saying Edwin’s aren’t hot. I’ve actually never met an Edwin in my lifetime.
Aside from the two, it was nice to see how much the brothers and Cassie were built upon as important characters. Made me happy.
Joshuah was a limp dick that just needs to be shoved into Cecelia’s ass and go away. They were super shitty characters and I felt so bad Dahlia. Tragedy.
The plot: Chameleons are going missing and there’s a bigger war brooding in the horizon. That’s basically what I’ve gathered. Nothin substantial here but this book was a lot of world building, character building, explaining, etc. And I’m okay with that.
I’m interested to see how everything progresses in book two. No cliffhanger in this one. Just a well placed pause. Again, I’m pleased with this book and patiently waiting for the next.
Yes, of course after seeing the cover I won’t lie, I was ridiculously excited about reading this book. I hoped and prayed it would embody the cover, and for me, it most certainly did!
First off, this book is well written. That’s right. This is a debut novel from an independent author and it’s easy to follow. It’s free of redundancies, grammatical errors and pointless dialogue. So, because of that we can see the world and characters clearly. Every scene has a purpose to the story -that I think is more layered than we realize (especially at the beginning).
The world building feels fluid and is presented through the characters and story, rather than the reader having info dumped upon them. Fantasy tends to do this a lot, so it’s nice to be able to have the world unfold for us as the story is being told.
I really enjoyed the characters. Dahlia is relatable. She’s young and maybe a little unsure of herself, but it’s clear she knows that when she makes her decisions she’ll follow through. You can see so much room for growth, but still stand in her corner while she’s doing her growing. Her friends and colleagues are beings you want to be around and get to know. I’m looking forward to watching their bonds grow stronger. I’m also looking forward to watching love bloom. *eyebrow wiggle* I won’t go too much into this (partly because this story just skims the surface of it), but know I fully ship those two and CANNOT wait for their story to unfold.
Lastly, I want to talk villains. I hate them. Like, I really, really can’t stand them. Yes, there’s more than one to hate and yes, you’ll probably hate them all. But hey, that’s what villains are for, right?!
Although, the book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, there’s definite questions that will need to be answered and issues that will need to be addressed. It IS the start of a series and I don’t need all my answers now. I’m hunkering down and happy to see where the story goes. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on an actual journey with a cast of characters, so this should be fun!!
Shout out to Takari Hunter for allowing me to start this journey with her and Dahlia and hook me up with an ARC. Thank you!! It’s great to be able to read an ARC and give it a positive review. So, Takari... you’re writing the next one, right? Like now?? Patiently (not so patiently) awaiting Book 2!
3 stars because it had chameleon shifters.... thats it.
so this was a BR with the cake house i dunno what to think, honestly. this is how i felt, the entire time reading this book.
The MC Dahlia is a chameleon shifter who is 232 years old but she acts like a 21 year old with no real life skills despite being a human assassin for 95 years... or so. The character is written like two authors were writing her who had no idea what the personality traits the other was writing about, she skipped between being an emotional wreck who was hopelessly dependent on her schizophrenic psycho mothers love and being this badd arse assassin killer who doesn't care about killing and does it for a living.... also the guys were... ok. 2D characters... confusing.
the BIG SPOILER
and on top of that the entire setting for this story was set up like a politically or business connected white family wanting to marry off their daughter to a potential ally/business partner. daddy and momma was used throughout the entire book... and these people are demons. i just did'nt get it. i don't know if this is a RH or 1:1.... ill prolly read the next one. i don't know what else to say. it was weird and disconnected obvious and odd. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
5 stars are reserved for readings that provoked an emotion or kept me going after one more chapter. But this one here is special. Ya see! Last year's reading challenge had me hunting monster's. This year has me discovering trauma. Learning that most yt books fears are of the... what has been done to others, being visited onto them. Type of themes in BPOC communities has a glass ceiling. Put in place to let the good one in.
This book here is all its own. #IAWThoughts #2024goals #ReadingTrauma
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC. I’m always a bit nervous to read something from a new author but WOW WOW WOW! Takari Hunter comes out swinging with this amazing debut! I could not put it down and I love that Dahlia is a strong badass character but there was still room for character development. I liked that she wasn’t perfect but was actually growing as a person. And I love the twist at the end. I usually see those coming but I was not expecting that. This is an amazing debut!! I applause you Takari👏🏽
Wow oh wow this booked sucked you in from the beginning. The world building was great and so fun. Dahlia is a chameleon demoness who moonlights as an assassin to earn enough money to get out of a bond with a terrible demon. Her mom forced the bond and might be the worst mother ever aka Mommy Dearest. Once other chameleon demons go missing, Dahlia teams up with lucifers seven to find out where they are going. She gets very close to Edwin but he is hiding something. Dahlia really grows in this book, she has always relied on herself but she starts to trust the others around her with her secrets. I really enjoyed this debut novel from Takari Hunter and cannot wait until the next installment.
Isn’t it the best when you discover a new author who takes and idea you already love and turns it on its head? Dahlia is a demon, not just any demon she is Chameleon royalty. Chameleon’s have been living in hiding since the great battle between Michael and Lucifer, they were the race treated as the scape goat for Lucifer’s loss and the demons getting kicked out.
Dahlia is a fantastic character just the right combination of kick ass and emotionally vulnerable to be realistic. I dislike female characters that are so over the top in either direction it was great seeing Dahlia develop through the first book and take what she could for herself. Carver and Cade are my next favorite characters, they’re Dahlia’s twin older brothers, standing up against their mother in whatever ways they can without her going completely off the edge and locking them all in the family home. They are so funny and I can’t see what they’ll do in the next book. Dhalia’s mother is a piece of work surpassing even Joan Crawford of Mommy Dearest proportions, I do hope we get some answers on what exactly went wrong in that woman’s head in the next book.
In my opinion the next book cannot come fast enough, I have all the questions! The world building was so rich and well done that I had one of those lovely book hangovers when I emerged at the end with no idea what time of day it was. I could not put this book down, when all was said and done it was delivery pizza for my family that night because I was busy reading about Dahlia kicking ass. Fantastic!
I did receive an ARC copy in exchange for a review, I also pre-ordered a copy because this series is worth the dent in my book budget to support.
I was granted an E-ARC for this lovely book in exchange for an honest review! And I can honestly say, that I loved it!
To be honest, I wasn’t so sure that I was going to like it because the beginning was a bit more about telling than showing. I almost felt like I was being talked at. But, by the third chapter I was all in. I ADORED Dahlia, the MC! At first the insanity and voices thing kinda threw me off but the further along I read I completely understood what was going on and thought it was a very clever little twist.
The actual world-building was a bit lacking, nothing was really said about it besides being in modern America and being “Hell”. Although that was a bit frustrating, I didn’t feel like it took away from the actual story.
The characters though, that’s what kept me reading. I loved all of the characters so much. I felt so connected to them. I was invested in their stories and by the time the end came I was frustrated to have to let them go until the next installment. Well, except a couple of them that I wanted to throat punch with iron spikes.
The plot was exciting and intriguing. Lots of little twists and turns that I didn’t expect, some that I did. I’m excited to see where it goes in the next book!
Overall, I give Betrayals and Broken Promises 4 stars!!
So this is an amazing book. It’s also this authors DEBUT BOOK!!!! and let me tell you it was AWESOME. I will continue to read everything she writes!!
Dahlia is a Chameleon demon who we’re supposed to be extinct!! Working as an assassin to save enough money to get her out of a bonding contract to a guy who is a real piece of work!!
On top of that she discovers Ophelia her aunt is missing.
No spoilers here but definitely read this book you will not be disappointed!!!
First of all, this cover is gorgeous. I love how it represents Dahlia. This is one of those books that you can just sit back, relax and enjoy. Dahlia and her bestie are snarky and badass. All Dahlia wants is the freedom to choose her future for herself. Family is everything to her and those relationships are in jeopardy. Being a chameleon demon gives her access to amazing powers but also makes her a target. I really liked her personality and feel invested in seeing how she grows.
This is a great urban fantasy novel with potential for an interesting series. I’m really looking forward to seeing what else Takari comes up with next.
What an amazing debut novel. The story is witty, original and packed with complex and developed characters. The MC reminds me wow a bit of myself, strong and someone's overly independent and stubborn. I can't wait to see what happens with Dahlia next!
I won an ARC of this copy. I just finished this book and I loved it. This book was full of twists and turns. In this book You never know what will happen in the next book. It's about a girl who is from a extinct race chameleon and she have to fight for her voice. She strong, sassy and know how to fight. I love each and every page of this book😍😍 and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. 😍😍😍😍
I liked some things. I liked that there’s this whole new species of demons — the chameleons. I liked that demons are the focus. I liked Luc and his Seven.
I’m not so sure I like our heroine though. I want to reserve judgment on her. I will wait till book 2 to see what happens next.
One i been following this author from the very beginning and i have been dying for this release based on the cover alone then the teasers blew me away and u knew i had to read it and i was not disappointed at all the world she created was mind blowing and the twist at the end i cant wait for the next book
I was ecstatic when I received my ARC and I fell in love with it and the author. Let me tell you why this is a story you can not miss out on.
We start the story being introduced with Dahlia, a chameleon longing for her freedom. A strong and feisty character that has a long road ahead of her, to relieve herself of the bond her mother forced upon her. To do this, she disguises herself as an assassin, after a while when things don't go exactly the way she had wanted she the story takes on a life of its own.
The authors' fluidity with words is able to captivate the reader from the first page. A complex and compelling story bursting with mystery, adventure and surprises every flip of the page. The way in which it flows so seamlessly it will have you laughing, shouting and questioning along with the characters, as they go through all that is set out before them. The storyline, along with the character development and their relationships with one another works in harmony and leaves us with an amazing read. You will not see it coming, this is a tale of twists and turns that will leave you gasping for breath.
Overall …. If I didn't know that this was the work of a new author and was her debut novel I wouldn't believe it. She writes like a seasoned writer and if this is what she presents us now, let me just say I can not wait for more.
3.5 maybe a 4. As much as I liked the characters and the background plot, you’ve pretty much got a Disney Princess Ben 10 without the singing or the watch. But I guess just by the title I should’ve known what sort of book this would be.
The fmc is whiny, woe is me but somehow thinks she’s a badass. The only good thing about her that I liked was the chameleon thing. I’m not sure how old a demon has to be to reach maturity but this one is a brat and apparently still believes her mother when told to shut her mouth.
The main plot annoyed me. Josuah and the mother were just ugh and with the way the fmc acted it almost felt underage. She has a large group on her side and everything could’ve been sorted by the truth.
Bit of a trigger warning towards the end. I was more interested in Cassia and her guy. Not much romance, which I’m thankful for at this stage. I think both of them were in the wrong, but the fmc was a hypocrite. Favourite characters were the twins. Will probably read the next one depending on my mood. The cover is awesome.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
What a interesting tale. Having received this e-book free in return for my true and honest opinion here it is.
It was awesome but eh at the same time. Overall I had more high points then low which is why I have it 4 stars instead of 3. The title is a little misconstrued in my opinion as I felt a little less broken promises and a lot of drama then betrayals from the MC. By the end a lot was more clear to me why the title is as such but overall there was a lot of emotions (typical of a broken mentally female ). I MAY recommend this to my fellow friends depending on how the future novel pans out.
This book was not what I expected. It starts a little slow but picks up and is truly a captivating read. I can't wait for the next book to come out so that the adventure can continue. Twist and turns and hidden clues are sprinkled throughout each chapter. Definitely something new and intriguing.
What a fantastic and unique story about demons and the world they live in. The characters had Sass, the world is beautifully described and the plot is so inclusive and exciting. The dialogue is just brilliant and keeps you glued to the pages wanting more. What a debut novel from a new author. This is a story to read and a new author to follow. You will be pleasantly satisfied with this supernatural read! Wow!
I really liked the idea of the book, and the kind of demon the FMC is. I love that her way of changing forms/skins/whatever the technical therm is is through using different masks. It’s a really unique and original idea and it was really well executed. Im excited to see what else Takari Hunter has in store for us.
