In the mangroves of Belize, something ancient lies hidden beneath the roots. And when it surfaces, so too will one of man's baser inclinations. The root of all evil: GREED.

Boone Fischer and Emily Durand have enjoyed months of quiet on the tiny island of Caye Caulker. After surviving Hurricane Irma and a mountaintop madman, the two divemasters have finally begun to relax. Big mistake.

Following on the fins of the best-selling thrillers Deep Shadow and Deep Cut, this third Caribbean action-adventure thriller in The Deep Series takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Belize. From the offshore cayes to distant lagoons, from tropical rivers to jungle ruins lost in time, Boone and Emily race to untangle themselves from a deadly plot that threatens to shatter their lives.

"High adventure under pressure! Nobody does underwater action like Nick Sullivan." - Cap Daniels, author of the Chase Fulton Series.

Born in East Tennessee, Nick Sullivan has spent most of his adult life as an actor in New York City, working in theater, television, film, and audiobooks. After recording hundreds of books over the last twenty years he decided to write his own. Nick has been scuba diving for almost as long as he'd been acting, and his new series was inspired by his experiences in the Caribbean. "Deep Shadow" is set in the island of Bonaire and the second book, "Deep Cut", takes place on the Dutch island of Saba. "Deep Roots" takes place in the off-shore cayes of Belize, and "Deep Devil" is set in Cozumel. His first novel, "Zombie Bigfoot", hit #1 in Horror Comedy on Amazon.

You thought that Boone and Emily could only get into trouble in the Antilles, right? Guess again. And if you thought that Nick Sullivan was an actor first and a writer second, you had better buckle up before you read Deep Roots, because he’s about to blow you away with his writing skills. This book is my new personal favorite in his Deep Series.

When the hurricane damage in the Antilles eliminates Boone and Emily’s divemaster jobs, they find work in the Central American paradise of Belize. In addition to reef diving, they now find themselves learning the very specialized and dangerous sport of cave diving. You can just picture the possibilities, right? So did Nick Sullivan.

Just when you think the story is about to wind down, Sullivan keeps throwing in head fakes and ramping up the action. Deep Roots is one of those books that will have you reading until dawn because you just can’t help yourself. Boone and Emily face more danger than ever, and that’s part of what strengthens and deepens their characters. This pair have truly evolved into a franchise, and it’s very easy to envision a long string of great books coming out of their interactions and escapades.

So, give Nick Sullivan’s regards to Broadway, he won’t be back anytime soon, he’s too busy writing great books!

Another amazing thrill ride! Book three of Boone and Emily’s island adventures does not disappoint. Confession: I am a big fan. First off, I love Boone and Emily. I can’t get enough of their relationship. They are cute and coy without every getting cloying, and when they need to, they kick some awesome ass, in awesome ways. I love the inventive ways Sullivan gets them in trouble at just the right times and the more inventive ways he gets them out. He is constantly keeping you on your toes. The book is fast paced as is narrative style is direct and efficient and he always keeps the story moving. He also has a wonderful knack for making you feel like you are right there on those tropical islands. Every time I read one of his books I want to book a diving trip to the Caribbean – but then I think, I really don’t have to, after reading the book I’ve already had one. I, personally, don’t know anything about diving; but after reading his books feel like I could strap on an air tank and explore the Titanic. I know this review is a little over-the-top. I just really like this series. I read a lot of crime book writers: Lee Child, Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, etc. I think Nick Sullivan is right up there with the best of them, if not better. And I, for one, can’t wait for the next chapter.

I enjoy this series. First due to the accuracy of the SCUBA diving and dive trip depictions, secondly due to the accurate descriptions of sites and locations. This one, however, takes place at a spot where I have not been diving but which has long been on my wish list, namely Belize. The characters are a bit of stretch, suffering from "terminal cuteness" and a tendency toward a smart quip when a simple answer would suffice. I am not knowledgeable enough to know whether the Mayan archaeology depiction is accurate but it seems reasonable. An enjoyable story, the only thing I found an issue is the "deus ex mechana" occurrences that change the course or save the day. Bit of a stretch, but a great beach read (literally!)

Terrific read!!

As a veteran, diver, yachtsman, boat captain, and pilot, who has lived in the Caribbean over 30 years I am hard pressed to appreciate the writing in most of the adventure books in or about the caribbean, way to many inaccuracies and holes in the stories for me. That is not the case with Nick Sullivan. This is the third of Sullivan’s books I have read with these characters and theme and cant wait to read the next, he demonstrates knowledge, and experience about what he is writing, and spins it in an exciting way to keep your attention. If you enjoy adventure I am confident you will enjoy this read.

I was super excited to get another book of Boone and Emily's diving adventures! Deep Roots almost had an Indiana Jones feel to it, if Indiana Jones were in a more tropical location and liked to scuba dive. This series gets better and better with each book! Aside from enjoying a great story, I've also learned a bit about the local culture and a bit of history in these islands. It does help that the Author has first hand knowledge of these areas! Nick Sullivan not only wrote this fantastic series, he narrates it as well! He does an outstanding job with all the different voices and accents! I'm super excited to hear that Boone and Emily will be back soon in another book!

Beauty and Danger

I love the dynamic between Boone and Emily. They are a unique dive master couple who love the deep. They seem to draw trouble no matter which island they’re on but carry on. This series is a fun read.

AUDIO BOOK REVIEW. Nick Sullivan's Caribbean Dive Adventures just keep getting better -- this is the third book -- after Book 1, Deep Shadow and Book 2, Deep Cut -- and it's best yet in both plot and narration. I cannot wait to dive into the next book (see what I did there?). The serenity and beauty of the island setting juxtaposed with the dark goings-on underwater and in the criminal underworld make for an action-packed, high interest story you'll read straight through.

Sullivan masters the world building – the paradise setting of Belize and its sparkling waters draws in readers, but something sinister is lurking beneath the surface, and readers can’t help but stick around to find out exactly what it is.

Deep Roots is packed with quirky characters that readers will love and villains that readers will loathe. The relationship between main characters Emily and Boone continues to gel, and I appreciate that Sullivan shows how it's truly a partnership. The author portrays a healthy relationship and the importance of communication, particularly for this couple who has been through some pretty harrowing experiences and both suffer a bit of PTSD. Best part for this reader? Though this relationship is central to the story, and though there's a very HEA, the focus of the story is the action, adventure, and suspense -- not the romance. Hooray!

The author is again the narrator of the audio book of Deep Roots, and he perfectly voices the characters. There is never any confusion about who is talking (again, kudos to the writing), and he does some great island accents and in this story, he has gotten Emily's voice just right. The dueling accents of Emily (London) and Boone (American) was really fun, and I enjoyed the "pronunciation denunciation."

I was thrown by some unexpected and unnecessary F-bombs, which are always more startling to hear than read, but overall, this is a well-written, well-voiced story start to finish. Readers can jump in on this series at any point, but as is the case with most series books, it's always the best experience when you can start at the beginning to get the backstory and watch characters (and author skills) grow.

Highly recommend the book and the series, and I'm ready to start book four, Deep Devil. Happily, it’s already out in the world, and if I play my cards right, I might finish it just in time for the fifth book. (Because the series MUST go on!)

This third book in the Boone-Emily series of tropical paradise diving adventure tales was every bit as good as the first two. This time, the couple find themselves in and around Belize. The atmosphere is tangible as they encounter crocs, snakes, another Brit, a Yank, Mayan treasure, extreme cave diving and some new locals such as a cutie potlicker. What's a potlicker? Well.... listen to the book! Emily gave me some laugh out loud moments and a craving for pineapple danishes. Boone gave us some cool capoeira. All in all, great fun and adventure. I can't wait for the next one! I hope all these books get made into movies. Narration was absolute perfection, but I could hear the recording equipment, which at times took me out of the story. Hope it's fixed in the next one.

If you are one who adores well-written and expertly researched action adventures which can stand alongside the excitement and thrills of an Indiana Jones movie, you will want to have a listen to this new audiobook. Nick Sullivan is both the author and narrator of a recently released story in his ever expanding “The Deep Series” currently available on Audible. “Deep Roots” is the third and most recent story, at the time of this review, in the series bringing listeners to an original and exciting location full of action, adventure and intrigue found deep within the mangroves of Belize; a country located near Guatemala and Honduras. I can say that after finishing this book in the series, I’m looking forward to more explorations in the future from this team. If this type of audiobook seems interesting to you, I think you will enjoy joining Boone and Emily as they take risks which could reap great rewards or, instead, it could cost them their lives.

The story opens by bringing the listener right into an interesting and rather complex diving mystery. A body, some odd objects, and strange circumstances encompass the first few chapters quickly engaging the listener. While this portion of the story unfolds, we are also provided some good background details of events relating from some of the previous stories. As one would expect, Boone and Emily are back in this adventure where the couple relocates from a rather small island to a quite different region of the world having some of the best underwater cave systems. Plenty of warm water, dense jungle, expansive mangroves, caves, and abundant sunshine to enjoy. Along with the new location, our couple finds some new friends to join their team as well. In a place like this, how could this fun and light-hearted team of divers get into any real trouble? Little do they know; in a short amount of time they will become front and center to a dangerous and deadly plot which could be the end of future adventures forever.

As I have said in my previous reviews of Mr. Sullivan’s works, I find that he provides a level of edutainment (education and entertainment) not often delivered from other authors I have listened to. I’m not a diver, but I come away from his books with fun and interesting facts and trivia which seems to come up in conversation with others. You will learn about the dangers of cave diving (I wanted more), the importance of compressed air mixing, along with diverse jungle creatures. While listening, I found I gained a better understanding of just how treacherous the jungles and mangroves of this country can be. Very different from the likes of someone raised in the city. I found this book to contain a deeper focus upon archaeological details than the previous two; which I liked. Add to this the author’s detailed and descriptive scenic locations and you have a rather enjoyable and compelling story.

The characters are believable, likable, fun, and the well-developed banter between Boone and Emily is always good for a little chuckle. Our new antihero in this story is just as much a psychopath as seen in the previous books. The author also sprinkles in some pop-culture references which fans of TV science fiction will find enjoyable. Remember, those wearing red shirts are some of the first to be taken care of while doing any form of exploring.

As I have stated in previous reviews, I’m not often a fan of the author also narrating their own audiobooks. I can say that there are few exceptions I have had to this, and Mr. Sullivan is one of those. He started as a narrator with his deep and smooth voice and from there branched out in to writing. So, I can say that his ability to both write and narrate is what makes these books in this series worth listening too. He knows how to bring the characters to life because he created them, and he also knows why they act the way they do in specific situations. For me, unlike the others in the series, this book’s narration felt slightly faster paced than the previous. This is easily rectified by modifying the speed on the Audible application to meet your liking.

For parents and younger readers, the book contains vulgar language used by a few of the characters. Additionally, there are some mature-focused jesting and light romance materials included. As with most thrillers, there is also some rather graphic violence which may not be appropriate for younger listeners. If you can deal with these few items, it is an audiobook worth a listen.

In summary, the story aligns rather well with the previous two adventures. If you have enjoyed them, I know you will find this one enjoyable as well. It is a bit different from the previous book’s location and focus, but it adds a new level of excitement with deeper aspects of mystery and corruption. The majority of the audiobook’s plotlines are closed at the end of the book and each of the books could be read as a standalone if you would rather. However, I think we will be seeing more of Boone and Emily, hopefully, in the coming months. I would have liked a deeper emphasis on the cave systems of Belize, but the author in his closing chapter stated why this was not the case. I very much enjoy the afterword hearing how the author weaved in actual events, characters, and even had to do some modification to ensure items fit into the overall story. Again, if you enjoy thrilling adventures, I would pick up a copy of “Deep Roots” and give it a listen.

Disclaimer: This review is based on an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) edition of the audiobook soon to be released.

Note: Even this is Book 3 in the series, it works as a stand alone novel.

Deep Roots is another great adventure thriller! This series just gets better and better. I really love Emily and Boone, our heroes. Their chemistry is spot on. I love their joking around, flirtatious behavior, and ability to take on bad guys.

There’s a bit of archaeology tossed into the plot and I really liked this aspect of the story. Not all riches are gold or drugs. Plus there’s a touch of dangerous cage diving. This setting has such a rich and diverse history & it was great to see that explored a bit.

The story does have one weakness and that’s with Emily. She’s a great character but she’s definitely in the co-pilot seat. Boone makes nearly all the decisions, he picks up on the bad guys before Emily every time, and sometimes he even has to explain a few things to her. So I would like to see Emily treated as an equal by the plot instead of just amusing sidekick.

The author gives us a little afterword about his personal experiences of the location used for this book, which was very cool. I also understand his reasons for limiting the cave diving in the story to a just a few scenes.

I have listened to all 3 books in this series now and I have commented on Emily’s accent in my past reviews. She’s from England, but her accent sounds Australian to me. This story brings that up in a humorous way and I appreciate that author putting that in there. All around, it’s a fun thriller. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Nick Sullivan is a joy to listen to. His smooth narration is easy to fall into and enjoyable all the way to the end of the story. He has a variety of accents for the different characters and his personal experience of the settings really shows in his narration. The pacing is perfect and there are no technical issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Nick Sullivan. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Realistic And Suspenseful

This is the third book in the Caribbean Dive Adventures and it starts off with a bang. Right away a dead body is found and Boone and Emily are trying not to get dragged into the investigation… but they find a little jade-like figurine and they’re both intrigued. Little did I know this was only the beginning…

Sullivan is able to bring an insane amount of realism to his books that make them jump off the page. Deep Roots was no different. This time we’re treated to diving in Belize, with some cave diving thrown in. What a thrill! Sullivan throws us off the boat and into the deep end so to speak with this one. Causing Boone and Emily to face their fears and face a new enemy.

The emotional attachment I have to these characters keeps growing with each book. Each story they become more and more real. They have problems from their former run ins with other bad guys. They have panic attacks and PTSD when certain objects appear. It’s just another layer that Sullivan adds to the stories to take them from good to great.

I can’t go into the main antagonist in Deep Roots too much but I thought that Sullivan did a great job setting the scene. He caused a massive amount of it but kept writing it in a way where I would second guess myself. I always try and guess the ending of books and I got some of this right but other parts I was way off. I enjoy that – I can kind of know where the book is going but also be caught off guard.

Overall, this was another great addition to the series and the setting, characters, and suspense were all phenomenal. I can’t wait to see where Boone and Emily take us next… I mean where Nick Sullivan takes us next. I might have to find a way to pick his brain and see what other tropical locations he’s dived.

I have listened to 2 of Mr. Sullivan's books in the last few years, both part of the Deep Series. One of my favorite things about this book/series is how the author is also the orator. He portrays the characters and tells the story in the way that he wants it to be.
The Caribbean has some of the greatest and best diving locations in the world. Having never traveled to any of the locations mentioned in this book, I had a blast being taken on a tour of Belize. Boone and Emily are ever amazing and take curve-balls like champs.
The audio recording of this book was pristine. I have no complaints or criticisms. It was flawless. As for Mr. Sullivan's narrating, I have already commented on his amazing acting and reading. He gets the job done, and he gets it done right. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to future adventures!

This is the 3rd book in the series and I’d recommend reading them in order so you know the main character backstories and references to past events.

Boone and Emily are back at it again. Taking place about 8 months to a year after the 2nd book, Boone and Emily are settling in on their new island and job with a new dive shop. This time on an island or, caye to be more precise, off the coast of Belize. It doesn’t take long for them to run into trouble as the first chapter they’ve already found a dead body in SCUBA gear floating in the mangroves. SCUBA accident or something more sinister? Well since it’s Emily and Boone, of course it’s the later.

This again reads and plays out mostly like the past novels. Lost of well researched world building. A fun face paced read. Action picks up later on in the book. Again somewhat predictable but none the less a fun read. Now of to read about their next adventure, surely nothing will go wrong this time, right?

As I rarely depart from my regular authors, I saw this series and took a leap of faith in reading it. I can honestly say I have not been disappointed. It's has a wonderful foundation throughout, with great characters. I have a tendency to Google Earth and research every adventure in the books I read. I have to hand it to Nick for his near perfect descriptions of these destinations. Upon completion of every book it almost feels as I have taken every step of "Boonemily" throughout the islands..."almost."
If your looking for a great adventure and thrills, take the leap and enjoy some great reading.

Another Great Read!

Spellbinding, thrilling, funny, educational, heart-warming, etc. I'm running out of descriptive terms to adequately tag Nick's books. To say I throughly enjoyed this book would be an understatement. I once got to spend a fascinating hour talking to Frank Herbert, the author of the "Dune" series of books. I consider Nick to be his equal. I consider Nick to be the "scuba whisperer!" Moreover his tales of adventures in the Caribbean remind me of a television series from the 1960's called "Adventures in Paradise." That was my favorite show and Nick's books are rapidly becoming my favorite books. Highly recommended!

This is the second of the Deep series that I have read and I found it even more enjoyable, perhaps because I already knew something about the main characters. As I felt at the end of the first book, I again enjoyed reading about Boone and Emily. The author has created two characters who get into interesting scrapes and have a good chemistry together. This was a fast, enjoyable read and this series is already feeling like a comfortable, old shoe in the sense that I was confident that I would find reading this book to be a pleasant experience, and I was not disappointed. I have no significant complaints; I am just keeping my five-star rating in reserve.

Excellent author and great story telling. Love the the quick wit of Emily and the archeology discussed in the books. Love the diving descriptions. Trying to get my dive master best friend to read these books since Bonaire is one of her favorite places to dive (where the first book took place). Nick Sullivan is a new favorite!! I find every possible moment to read Mr. Sullivan's books ... while getting ready for work in the morning, while eating lunch or supper, and while riding the train to/from work. Can't get enough!!!! You will not be disappointed in these books.

Wow, love Emily & Boone

It is so nice to see younger folks with good heads on their shoulders . Kind of aged myself there, but hey I'm allowed. Love the appeal of Emily and Boone, their interactions together and with other people. Love the locations of these books and the descriptive nature of the author. The maps at the beginning showing you the places talked about. I may not be a diver but I can appreciate the beauty of it.

Epic thriller

This is my third book in the series and they just keep getting better and better. Love the characters, settings, cultural Hispanic backgrounds of Belize that make up the locals along with all the epicurean delights and seafood at the bars and restaurants along the beaches. And the thrills and adventures. of diving and the boats. And the beauty of the sea, above and below. It doesn’t get any better than this, yeah?

Another Winning Adventure

In this outing, the adrenaline level is lower, but the relationship between Boone and Emily deepens. Rather than pure action thriller, this plot is an underwater treasure hunt that pits our favorite divers against a greedy villain. As in the other books in this series, the location (here it’s Belize) is a major character. The author again crafts a tale that creates a tropical vacation in your mind. A perfect beach read.

Bonaire the amazing.

A really superb tour around the island of Bonaire with plenty of underwater action.
Simply the best of the first three books in this series - although all three are really spectacular in presenting the unique geography, geology and underwater actions of the Caribbean islands.
The characters are well developed and realistically interact with each new adventure they stumble into.
A great fun series

Now this was exciting!
We got some dives in and met new folks on a new island.
We had a heartfelt moment about the life threatening events from the past installment. Well done.
I love the plain and simple relationship between Emily and Boone and want more.
The bad guys are like a good Saturday afternoon movie and that helps make these so much fun.
The pacing was fast and fun.
More please…

I am a fan of this series, however, I have a significant bias toward the story lines and the settings of the stories. Being a scuba diver, cave diver, and having visited almost all of the destinations in this series, I can easily immerse myself into the stories and the venues of the books in the deep dive series. Nevertheless, they are always entertaining and, even with the heavy plot/theme of all the books, they are a nice light (beach) read.

Excellent adventure again full of rich diving descriptions. This young couple managed to find yet another adventure without intending to. The book is well written and the characters get a bit more developed with each book. I was not disappointed with this one, kept all the freshness that was in the first two books. Looking forward to reading more of their adventures.

Fun and engaging read!

The characters are endearing as is the locale. I learned many things about Belize I didn’t know and the diving made for added unique suspense. The story moved fast. Emily and Boone’s relationship is enviable. Ras Brooks is the best character and I’d read a story about him anytime.

Good book I enjoyed it a lot, have to admit I liked the first two better…maybe it was the adversary…Terrorists and serial killer? This one was more travelogue with no real suspense till Chapt 12? But as with all Boonemily stories…it was done too soon! Come on Nick get off your Duff keep writing!
Would recommend this book to any Tropical Mystery fans!
