Set in 2008, a pivotal year that witnessed the global financial crash, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, tightening of immigration laws and rise in gun-related violence in the West Midlands, this is the story of one Indian girl, Arya Mahtani, who's sole aim is to simply pass the year at a British university. Her jugaad and privilege puts her directly in the path of a hardworking scholarship student– Vladimir Petrov, the vodka to her hot chocolate. Their tumultuous friendship is affected by global events, the landscape around them ever changing. And slowly, the Russian winter begins to melt for the Indian summer.
Funny and endearing, Three Impossible Wishes is a heart-warming book about finding love and learning to love yourself.
Anmol Malik aka Audrey Piano studied Creative Writing from the University of Warwick, England. After working at Leo Burnett and UTV-Disney, she went on to look after the Script Department at Yash Raj Films. Author, singer, songwriter, she' s honestly just a girl doing the best she can.
Three Impossible wishes is a story of Arya, a dreamer who wants to enjoy the moment is sent abroad, for studies by her dad. Does she really want to study the course her dad choose? Will she adjust in the world of serious people? Will she fall in love with England? Will she fulfill her wishes, the three impossible wishes?. . From the start, I was hooked to the book and after a long time, I read a book in a go, without wasting a single minute, with a Lil time I got between meetings, I utilised it all in reading this book. . The storyline of the book is fabulous, I liked how the author sequenced everything, and it felt real, like watching a Bollywood movie. The plot of the story is interesting with the twists that will make the reader curious. It's a rollercoaster ride of emotions that Arya goes through. Doing what you love, being the storm in between calm minds that's what Arya is, and I fell in love with her. I found myself in her at many places. With excellent narration and engaging writing style, the book revolves around love, friendship, drama, family and will remind you about your college days. The love triangles, Parents expectations, misunderstandings and wrong judgments and conclusions, strong friendships, fear of being judged surrounded, Arya. Will she do what she loves? I loved it all. Though there are certain places where the plot is unnecessarily stretched, but then it covers it all with my love for Arya. With a smooth pace and easy language, this book will make you fall in love with each character. Yes, each character will remind us about a person. I liked the equation of Vlad and Arya and of course Sahil. It has drama and dialogue, with the backdrop of England with the desi Mundas. Looking for a light, interesting read? This is it.
I have been drooling over the cover I don't know why🤭 and finally I read it damn this takes me back to my college days. Our protagonist, Arya Mahtani just got into her college and her subject- Accounts, 😍 that was my subject too in college days 🤭 and this girl is into food, she got a collection of recipes, books and knowledge regarding food but she haven't cook anything just like me😂 and now and then sipping in hot chocolate, espresso, etc. This is so me. So basically our protagonist is a typical Indian girl who is under the pressure to maintain her perfect reputation as her dad is super fine and she is trying hard to keep up with his standard. She is so us- worrying about lectures, tests, exams and all along the way, she got her crazy friends who are like a little family in her ups and downs, protecting and guiding her all the time. 😊 Initially she got a crush on a guy and her 3 wishes were- 1) For Sahil Malhotra to kiss me at Graduation. 2) To get a full score in my Accounting exam. 3) To be happy.
But as the story flow, her character is developed and yes the story is pretty sweet and hilarious, it is kept light concentrating that we as college students are pretty easy going aren't we? Plus one more thing I loved the most, it so desi 🤭 I mean if you just look at the chapters' name, first chapter only "Tea With Brandy" I mean you will crave for food reading the chapters' name only 😂 pizza, gulab jamun, old monk masala chai, tiffin and achar and so on. After ages I read a cute adorable one and it reflected my things several times.

What an absolutely underrated gem! Really needed this dose of happy, impressive writing, a sensible and warm plot that will leave you chuckling and loveable characters you won’t be able to forget anytime soon.
“Three Impossible Wishes” was a book I stumbled upon by chance. Who knew I would hug this book and keep it close to my heart just after turning the last page? It was something I had so not expected. I noticed that most of the Indian writers are masters when it comes to intense, deep and dark stories. But to write this realistic rom-com which is so much more than just the love angles is something not everybody can accomplish. But then, I found this book this book that deserved to be cherished and hyped so much!
The character arc of Arya was *chef’s kiss*. The way the character development happened over the course of a story that kept you hooked because of its wit, the way a very mature balance was created, making sure that the story remained adorable without being cringe; the characters and their lives being touching and not just one dimensional.
So many aspects are handled with the utmost care and skill. Nothing was left undiscovered. The author dug deep into the world to give one an experience of fulfilment and relatability. It makes you laugh, it makes you sad, it makes you sit on the edge of your seat and go crazy from all the drama that unfolds in the prettiest manner ever.
Hard hitting at times, the book explores sensitive emotions like self discovery, heartbreak, trauma and self love. Everything was fitting in the best of ways, and soon you found yourself within the holds of this charming book. Those little but awe-worthy elements sprinkled here and there made things better like a cherry on top.
Arya’s life will not be unfamiliar to many. Everyone has an Arya in their life : she’s either you or someone you know. She’s clumsy and sweet, almost like a spring that has been suppressed for very long. So long that it takes a lot of time to bounce back, but once it does, even the sky isn’t a limit. In the world of perfect-daddy’s-princesses, we need a queen like Arya who carves out a way for herself. She defines herself by her mistakes, and wears them proudly. She’s a weird, funny, smack-me-because-I-have-lose-sense-sometimes girl, whose “average” self will win your heart.
An ode to dreams and love, the story does an excellent job at being a five course meal : offering you the finest dining experience and making your day so much better. I personally would love to see this story on the big screen because it’s high time we portray the honest and raw reality of such quality stories and people.
It doesn’t just talk to you about how perfection is overrated, but also gives you such golden moments that will leave you wondering. Anmol Malik is a debut author and I will read anything she writes because for many people this story will work like medicine : filling you with hope and cheer with every page. After finishing the book, you should look back and see how the graph of her storytelling shot up like an arrow. The author definitely has a knack for creating a world which is this fabulously built, with no childish writing and silly plots : just pure bliss. A very humane story of ordinary people, and how even the most unlikely circumstances can play a part in the fate you have no control over.
Be right back, have to gush over this book a million times more.
#220 "He felt like what home should have felt like, but never did."
BOOK: Three Impossible Wishes AUTHOR:@anmolmalik5 @audreypiano GENRE: RATING: ❤❤❤❤❤
One of the most Romantic and Meaningful love story I have ever read ❤🌷💫 Much better than Sex novels , I have been reading which was under the genre "romance". Nowadays, what I have sensed from my reading experience is that if you write a hot sex story between the protagonists, that itself shows their passion and they are shipped and sealed with a 5 star rating, but I could never rate books in that fashion. Love is passion, strength, trust & understanding. And love cannot be pin pointed to one spot, its eveywhere. Life is made with love.
When people write off "love" eluding all glitters of divinity from it with mere lust I feel so beaten. But Arya Mahtani and Vladimar formed their bond with a pace, a rhythm which brough originality and the glitters of divinity to the word "love". When an Indian girl named Arya, drooling over what she considers Sahil, as a dreamy indian boy meets the russian hunk who tops his batch, there is an instant connection.
♡ Life is not always about perfection.
♡ Human beings are beautifully flawed & unique.
♡ First love is not the end of the world, your world is where you are valued & celebrated.
♡ Happiness is in the small things.
♡ Friendship is in understanding and support.
♡ Family is a delicate spot in our heart.
♡ Changes always starts with realization. Always chase your dreams.
♡ Its never too late.
♡ Sometimes we never need closure, we should be able to read the situations.
♡ You deserve nothing less than butterflies.
I am glad I brought this book.😊 I found some answers from this book, which I was asking all my life to myself. Some indications that pointed out to my hunches about what happened in my life. I am truly happy about the path & people I chose in life .
This was the first book which I read where in I saw a chemistry between a Russian and an Indian. I absolutely loved Vladimir Petrov and Arya Mahtani's chemistry. The start of this book was a little slow but as Vladimir entered the story, the book suddenly changed. Arya who seemed to be someone who self-loathed herself suddenly seem to transform when she and Vladimir became lads. I especially love how the characters always stood up for each other and how they learn't to stood up for themselves too. Arya's unrequited love for Sahil will definitely make the reader's feel relatable. Arya who was weird, crazy and obviously unorganised blended with a perfect gentlemen Vladimir who was organised, smart and brave. I loved the line where Vladimir said:
From Chekhov to Rowling. They are who raised me. Literature, good, bad and ugly. They shaped me. I read and read until these books opened doors to new worlds. Taught me things no adult I knew could ever teach me.
The book is an extremely honest writing, one that is written in a language that fits the plot perfectly with slangs and common words. Set in a college backdrop, it chronicles the journey of our protagonist Arya, who seems to attract unwanted attention wherever she goes, and her life is just a collection of some unfortunate events. The storytelling is interesting with some cleverly crafted plot points and well thought out twists which make this journey even better. The book has a strong connection to food and each of the chapters bear a title corresponding to a particular food or drink, one that forms a crucial part of that chapter. The underlying idea of how parents influence their children’s life is explored efficiently and while that is not apparent in the beginning, that is an interesting tone that the story takes. From friendships to one-sided love to social acceptance of non-binary orientations, quite a lot has been covered, and this is one story that is guaranteed to keep you smiling. The climax of the book is amazing, and the last chapter just ties up the entire life of Arya in a bow.
Coming to the characters, Anmol has picked some people that can be found in our college lives or we would have met such people for sure. The easy-going person who loves everything apart from studying, the heartthrob of the college who has a line of people swooning behind them and so on. I loved the character arc of Vladimir and the nuances of the character that he carries. With different perspectives of him presented in the story, it was interesting how each thing linked his personality. Arya as a character did attract me, but only because of the zeal that she exhibited in her pursuits. Other characters such as Sahil, Simran etc. were crafted well. A special mention to Simran and the DDLJ reference, which was a grinning moment for me.
you guys, this book was a mood booster! i don't think I have ever laughed this much reading an Indian Romance (well, i wouldn't categorize this strictly as romance but you get the jist😬)
three impossible wishes, tells the story of Arya, who studies in the UK but let me tell you Arya has little to no idea of what she is doing most of the time! so when she learns that she is at the risk of not graduating, she PUTS HER RATHER RESOURCEFUL MIND at work👀 and tries to devise tactics that involves ahem *a Russian guy who apparently tops their batch*
i mean we can only imagine WHAT IS TO FOLLOW, right 😂👀 pick this up if you are a fan of : 🌻 opposites attract trope 🌻 a witty protagonist who is a force to be reckoned with 🌻 love triangles (yep👀) 🌻 also, desi romance FOR THE WIN ✨
i don't think I'd be able to let go off Arya, as a character easily because she reminds me of myself in so many ways! even to the morales she sticks by! it was so wonderful seeing her grow through out the book and realizing her worth little by little with every situation she encountered!
do i recommend this book? yes! but i was also not particularly fond of a few over the top incidents that could've been easily replaced with a few subtle inclusions. they were kinda unnecessary, in my opinion?
but all in all! i immensely enjoyed it and can't thank @harpercollinsin enough for sending me a copy :)
Before a clear introspection into the extravaganza of the book, it is an autobiographical Anmol that speaks throughout. The University of Westley, briefly taken out of the University of Warwick is what keeps you engrossed. The protagonist Arya Mahtani is an ubiquitous character who’s out to discover her own potential, find out her own self. Reading the book, you find yourself drawn towards it! It’s because the book is realistically carved out. With a magnanimous editing, HarperCollins has just ensured one of the finest authors on the podium. The way Anmol narrates the plot is going to keep you bewitched! It is a humoured romance and a coming of age narration which captivates a reader and leaves one mulling over his own self! Overall, it is a stupendously written and a brilliant piece of work that is a must grab for bibliophiles!
Three Impossible Wishes by Anmol Malik is a story about a 19 year old girl named Arya Mahtani who has been accepted to the University of Westley. Her father wants her to pursue a degree in Accounting and go with the easy way and get a job which pays bills. But Arya Mahtani doesn't know yet what she wants to do.
Sahil Malhotra, aka the typical South Delhi boy, made full of branded clothes and dad's money. Arya has a huge crush on Sahil, but he treats her just like a best friend and always gets her coffee without fail (*coughs*). The entire college and their friend circle feels like Arya is always behind Sahil like she is his pet.
Then her action's lead her to another fellow student who is a very uptight Russian origin - Vladimir Petrov – the vodka to her hot chocolate, and the only way out of her imminent deportation. Will she be able to survive her college course with the help of him?
Coming to the plot and the storyline, it is fantastic, I enjoyed reading this book and the witty writing of the author. Once you start reading this book it is going to be very hard for you to keep it down until you reach the very end. The author has truly done a brilliant job in developing the character of Arya Mahtani.
This book has everything that you would want as a reader in a book, like - family drama, love, friendship, finding your way and career, etc. We see different cultural backgrounds and how they mend and learn together, as well as overcome their differences (between the Russian culture and the Indian culture).
There definitely were points in the story where I felt it was slightly stretched as well as found Arya annoying at few places, but as you read further you will be able to easily let go of that. But the character of Arya Mahtani felt very much real and you will definitely find one such Arya in your friend circle.
"And what's wrong with average? There are hospitals filled with people would kill to be average and alive and healthy!" Says Arya Mahtani. (The Average Mahtani) who is in Oblivion of her own potential. She flew to the University of Westley from Mumbai for a course she is least interested in. (For her dad's sake) and begins her college life. Her life revolves around a guy her 'crush' Sahil Malhotra, regular college routine, and food!! She eats and when she's not eating she reads about it and writes about it in a way that our taste buds recieve the delectable stimulation which will secrete those hunger hormones for sure! ( Aah. Foodgasm! ) ( Make sure you grab some snacks/ coffee to have a bite or take a sip after every page you're turning) " I read about the things I want to eat.' She says.
And how her life takes that corkscrew when she meets a guy called Vladimir who could save her from the deportation. Vladimir a stoic, focused guy. Who helps people selflessly and faced so much as a child. He believes in creating his own destiny. In the midst of Sahil taking her for granted, Vladimir's entry, her dad's expectations, her choice of career, her wishes, and intense love for food, She's in a hullabaloo of where life will take her! ( You definitely gotta read it for knowing that) But I promise the book will make you fall in love with yourself and know your worth and potential. The book is such a cozy, hilarious, GASTRONOMIC read which will make you glued to it till the very end. Such a refreshing read I would say. Ah. And grab some food while reading it I repeat!
And I couldn't agree more to what has to say about the book! 'Totally cheeky, completely hilarious and endlessly charming.'
In search of a good modern-day romance- Book 4 Do rom-coms need be this cliche? Arya has a crush on Sahil but later realizes that Vladimir is the right one for her, because he rescues her from all tight spots in addition to being flawless himself. This was an easy read and feels like a Bollywood movie script in waiting.
Arya Mahtani, aka the ‘Average Mahtani’ is really struggling with her academics just like someone else we know (me), but like in a country entirely made of British Chais and British guys. But our gal is basically in love with a dili-wala munda. Now I want some volunteers in my ‘Lets all hate Sahil Malhotra’ club. Prime members will listen to me rant about Sahil’s resemblance to my ex for 3 weeks straight. The guy is just so full of it. Any way he is the least of my concerns when it comes to this book. Our top priority is unraveling the ‘Mysteries of the Russian’, Vladimir Petrov.
Arya Mahtani, She is your headstrong bombay-ite who might or might not be failing her Accounts Class only because she’s too good for the subject (It’s a legit reason. Fight. Me) Her father put her in some business and accounts hybrid course just like any Indian Father with adequate resources. She’s cheeky, weird, funny, adventurous and behold the love of her life, Sahi…., scratch that, it’s food. All sorts of food. Indian. British. Scottish. Chinese, Whatever you guys, she’s helluva passionate about it and it freaking shows. For a woman so bold she does have poor taste in men …….which changes over the course of this book, thank the Gods (Come on, don’t make that face)
Vladimir Petrov, Russian? check. Grumpy? check. Top scores? check. Self-made? check. Long coats? check. Loves reading? check. Looks good in a kurta? check. An ally? check. Now that’s a lot of checks for one man but he does it all and does it well. Personally I get to watch all my favorite things in a man in this book. Angst, stolen glances, more angst, heartbreak, love, pain, more angst, I’ve lived through all that with Vlad (I have legal rights to call him that) Every time I take a look at that guy and think, ‘whoa nothing could go wrong in his life’ and BOOM, something goes wrong. (It is a universal fact that nothing goes right after the use of the word ‘BOOM’)
Now this isn’t some normal story with fake desi rep because you RELATE to everything being said. It’s the real deal. The progress is smooth, understandable according to the ‘Universal Laws Of Students Worldwide’. Even Malik Saab has said it herself in the book, ‘Love stories are fun but you gotta pass the year’. Apt mentions of the classic ‘who is doing who’, sizzling gossips, campus folklores, showy parties, multicultural events, Desi Drama (but like in The UK). We have some really nasty desi guys in here too, yeah, the bully kind, yeah like from the movies. My only complaint is that the book did not meet my Daily Petrov Content Quota, meaning it wasn’t enough. But truthfully this is Arya’s story and how she grows up to be the person she is meant to be.

‘Totally cheeky, completely hilarious and endlessly charming’
~ Ayushmann Khurrana about Three Impossible Wishes
••••
Once again, Ayushmann Khurrana has lied to us. Admittedly the book was cheeky and hilarious and charming if you wouldn’t consider the fifteen or so places where you feel like your heart has been ripped out and gutted like a fresh tuna. I wasn’t warned enough, my poor heart had to go through all that. No I mean, one look at the book and you’d think this would only require maybe like one tissue but no, that does not cut it my friend. I’m saying tissues, in bulk. At least I used enough to make a certain tissue company’s sales skyrocket. The emotions are just so pure. Hit me like a freight train. AND WHAT WAS THAT ENDING MY GOD. Seriously I died of laughter, the last page is the one that made me screech with tears (*of joy this time) in the middle of the night, goddamn it)
GO READ IT BEFORE UNCLE SATAN ADDS YOU TO HIS BLACKLIST
Three Impossible Wishes by author Anmol Malik is a fresh take on the campus-romance of a young and self-conscious girl Arya Mahatani. Arya is a dreamer and her aspirations are often termed as mediocrity by many people around. After landing in University of Westley for a course chosen by her father, will Arya complete her degree? Will she be happy pursuing it? Will she ever accept England while her heart craves to be in Mumbai? Will she find love and stability in England? Will the country accept her? And so on...
The plot is intriguing, humorous and the moment you start reading the book, you will fall in love with the characters. The ease in conversation between Arya & Sahil is also heart-warming. Arya and Sahil share a friendship that goes beyond words, each understanding and complementing without even having to converse. But will it take a U-turn, when Arya decides to take it to another level, is all for the readers to find out.
Arya's self doubt and lethargy puts her in a spot when she has to pass an exam for which she is least interested and prepared. Here comes our Russian hero, Vladimir Petrov, a studious - mysterious young boy (Man) who seems to be the only person Arya can seek help from. But will Vladimir help Arya out? And what is the past that forbids him? And is there any future for him and Arya? Will Arya get her degree? Will she ever become serious in her life and be one with the world? And so many more questions will only be answered if you read this book.
I must say that after a very long time, a campus - romance book made me very hooked to it, that I had to finish it in one sitting. Sometimes, we fall in love with the characters and just don't want the book to end. Well this was one such book. It made me laugh at some parts (the punch-lines are too funny), it also made me cry at some places and thanks to Arya, it also made me crave that cup of coffee, purple and some yummy food. Well our lead character is a foodie you see! She can eat while she has nothing to do or when she is hungry. She can read about food when she is not hungry.
Overall, without revealing much about the plot, I shall leave you all with the above questions. You know you just need to pick up the book and give it a read to find the answers. So get going!
The review cannot end without appreciating the author, her fresh perspective of eyeing things and turning it into a novel is simply superb for all the new and experienced readers. The narration had a grace to it, puns and punctuations which clearly depicts the emotions of all the characters. For me, reading this book was not less than watching a super-hit Bollywood movie. For her first book, I must congratulate the author to have accomplished such a huge impact on the minds of her readers.
Favourite Quote : “I will not let you go until I know the storm in your heart. And not even then…..”
Question of the day : When was the last time you read a rom-com book?
Plot summary:
The book starts with our protagonist Arya Mahtani, 19 year old, who is studying in Westley away from home. Like any Indian, her father was very much proud of her for getting accepted in a university in England even though she was just an average student.
Arya’s mom had once told her that if she makes three impossible wishes then at least one of the will come true; hence she makes 3 wishes interconnected so that even if one of them comes true, all of her wishes will be fulfilled – hence the name of the book.
She is a girl next door who is as messy as a teen can be and has a huge crush on her best friend Sahil Malhotra. Arya also has to get a perfect score in a test else she will be deported to India. Enter stubborn and full of attitude, Vladimir Petrov from Russia. The jugal bandi between our desi girl Arya and a Russian guy Vladimir is just hilarious.
What are these three impossible wishes that Arya has wished for?
Do these wishes get fulfilled?
Is Arya able to get the love of her life?
Will she be able to stay in England or ill she be deported back to India?
Read this book to know more!
Review:
To be very honest, I am someone who stays miles away from a few genre and Romance is one of them. This was my first Rom-com and I am not regretting picking it up. This book definitely made me laugh, cry, fall in love with myself and somewhere I could relate to the character of Arya. I think everyone of us is just like Arya at her age. The way her character grew from an immature and quite stupid teen to a mature person taking all the responsibilities was amazing. This book is an amalgamation of Bollywood and literature.
Another awesome thing about this book is that all the chapters are named after food (which made me crave for all the amazing dishes )
There was not a single dull moment in this book. The language used by the author is very facile. It is a very light read and will surely brighten your mood. 🙂
I give this book a 4.3 stars out of 5.
If you are someone who loves romance and romantic comedy, pick this book up 🙂
If you are someone who has just finished a heavy read, pick this book up for sure!
I would like to thank the author, Anmol Malik for this review copy.
TLDR: A Fun and frothy romance which could have been a tad bit shorter with fewer twists in the tale.
Full review Picture a large mug of rich frothy hot chocolate with marshmallows on top and a solid cube of chocolate at the bottom. This book is like that. . Three Impossible Wishes charts nineteen year old Arya Mehtani's journey in a prestigious London universiry as she finds love, finds her real calling in life and finds herself. Sure, it's clichéd, but then it's also, mostly, a really fun time. . Just like our aforementioned hot chocolate, it begins with a lot of froth — Arya goes through endless high jinks as she makes new friends and enemies on campus. Arya's character is pretty well developed — she's your typical lost, self-deprecating heroine who seems to be getting everything wrong in life. Actually, it kind of bothered me a bit that nearly all the characters seemed to be a bit stereotypical — so you've got the silent and surly Russians, and the obnoxious Delhi-wallas. At the same time, though, this stereotyping led to a lot of rib-tickling humour, some of which did make me chuckle. . The core of the book is the nicest part. Just like the rich, chocolatey goodness of your drink, it's really enjoyable to just sit back and watch Arya's new friendships blossom, and learn about all the things she truly cherishes. Arya and Vladimir both grow on us, and you find yourself rooting for them to get closer as the story starts to inch towards its obvious ending... . But wait! There's a surprise at the bottom of your cup, and there's a twist at the end of the tale. Cool, you think, let's see this get resolved. But no, there's another twist and a big revelation. And then another twist and a revelation. And then yet another... By the time the last twist-and-revelation is the thrown at you, it's overkill, you no longer care, and you're just waiting for the whole thing to get over. Just like the gently sick feeling you get after finishing that last sweet drop of your drink, after which you feel like you can't look food in the eye for three days, this is one of those books which leaves you with that "oh god too much" feeling at the end. Personally, I feel that the author could have left out a couple of twists and made the story at least 50 pages shorter. . However. In spite of the saccharine overload... will you do it all again? Definitely! Anmol Malik writes well, and I will definitely pick up her future works for some fun happy chick lit time. . Random thought: this book would make an EXCELLENT Netflix movie — the story falls right in line with To All The Boys I've Loved Before et al. The author seems to be associated with Bollywood, so I've got my fingers crossed that she'll actually make it happen! . I received a free copy of this book for review. Thank you @thereaderstribe and @harpercollinsin.
Arya Mahtani has no idea about her course or her life in general. She has been accepted in University of Westley but she is sure it was purely a mistake. Now after one year on the verge of failing and even deportation she has to find a way to pass this course. And the only person who can help her out is Vladimir Petrov. But she has a not so happy history with him. Arya is nothing but persistent. Soon there are challenges, insults, drama, romance, action and a lot of heartbreaks.
Review-
If you are a member of opposite attracts and love triangle trope then this is THE BOOK for you. I guess we have read tons of books with opposite attract trope then what is different in this book?
Well the main USP in this book is its characters. All the characters are hella relatable. Each character can be easily found in any college or university. Sahil the hearthrob of college, Arya the dumb best friend of Sahil, Vlad the school nerd with a cold personality, Swati and the school awwww couple.
Arya is dumb but only when it comes to Computer Science otherwise she is persistent, courageous, smart, a whole lot of clumsiness and filled with sarcasm to the brim. Yes it gets annoying the way she deals with her feelings for Sahil but then isn't it what she does very typical for a 19 yr old so I don't mind it much. Whatever she does is totally and utterly hilarious and at times awe inspiring. You can't help but fall in love with Arya.
Character arc is so so so impressive. Arya self doubts and self loathe a lot. But as the story progresses she starts realize her own strength, her quirks and her real passion with the help of Vlad. She is not dumb she is just not fit for Computer Science. Vlad who is tall glass of ice water surely transforms into somewhat lukewarm water in the end. He lets his guard down and share his vulnerabilities and realizes it is okay to feel things and to get attached to them.
Sahil well......let's just say he stays as Sahil till the end.
I love the title of each chapters as some cafe menu because it is also a very integral part of the book. This book keeps you on the edge the entire time. The twists & turns keep coming and keeps shocking you. I agree one or two incidents where rather over the top.
This book is a roller coaster of emotions with a totally crazy and weird Arya who is pro at self depreciating jokes. This book will make you laugh and hungry at the same time so keep your snacks, coffee and tissue ready. Also if you have not got it till yet READ THIS BOOK ASAP!!!
After a really long time did a book finally bring me out of my reading slump. I've been depressed lately but this book not only made me laugh, it actually made me make an account on this site and write a review. Though I loved Arya, now I really wish there was some way to find a Vladimir for me.
At first look there might not be much to the story, but I was very wrong because I kept thinking of the book long after I had completed it. Arya, the main character, is afraid of failing her exams and getting deported from the UK, so she hires the best student in her class to sit her exams for her. But he's a hardworking Russian boy who is at university on sponsorship and cannot afford to make a single wrong move. This shoestring summary hides other beautiful subplots. Vladimir's villainous father, Arya's painful unrequited crush on Sahil, a stunning LGBT angle that caught me completely by surprise. Having studied in the UK myself, I was taken aback that the gang wars which were so rampant during my time were so subtly and humorously captured.
In fact the whole book is very poignant, because on the surface everything is sunny and humorous but the heart of it hides very serious issues. It's difficult to speak about it here without making everything a spoiler. In a lot of ways the book is very much symbolic of Arya herself, someone who makes a mockery of herself but is actually in dire need of healing.
If you haven't been to the UK, read this book. It's a one way ticket to the land of pubs, cultural clashes and discoveries. If you have been to the UK, read this book anyway to travel from your bed. Read this book if you're still in college, read this book if you've graduated. It's a little hidden treasure trove of memories. Every single person will relate to the way these characters feel.
I cannot believe this is the author's first book. There is a poise, a bite in the writing that I haven't read from any other Indian author, which is why I specifically try to avoid reading books written by them. Eagerly looking forward to new work and hopefully a signed copy someday. My impossible wish was to smile again and this book did just that.
Starting off my October with this absolutely charming read!
Before I get into the full review, here's a brief one: desi girl goes to posh college, desi girl has desi f**kboi best friend who she's nursing a damn big crush on, has a wonderful desi best friend. Throw in one tall glass of Russian water (with icy green-blue eyes) and everything turns to mayhem. Filled with romance, mouth watering descriptions of food and full of heart, Three Impossible Wishes by Anmol Malik is a true joy to read!
What I loved: 1. DESI ☀️ REP ☀️- the Desi rep is EVERYTHING. As a person who's just started Uni, and I currently on tenterhooks about her life, I related a LOT to our protagonist Arya who is a spunky, lazy-only-by-fault, creative girl (just like someone I know, ahem). Her friends are desis, and the desi slang and reading Hindi just....*swoons* 2. ONE RUSSIAN BOY- ahem, before I say anything more, can I just say that now whenever someone says 'A Tall Drink of Water', this boy, Vlad, is who will always enter my mind. Because, he's tall, he's gorgeous, he's kind and passionate and mature and I just- *swoons ×2* 3. SNARK AND HUMOUR- the snark and humour is on point. Malik has the talent of being naturally and effortlessly funny without having to try hard. I love all the funny dialogues and scenes! 4. Romance and character arcs- the well written, well timed, well drawn out character arcs and romance plot add beauty to this otherwise perfect for Christmas RomCom that I will recommend to every person I know! You need to read this book- Desi, or not. You will LOVE it. 🥺❤️
Final review and rating- 5 shining golden stars for Arya's self-deprecating humour, Vlad's sweet popsicle heart and Swati's adorable AF boyfriend/fiance whose name I forgot. Oh and a million stars for the wonderful, poignant fast paced dramatic writing peppered with the right amount of feels and laughs! When Anmol Malik writes another book, I'll be there to get my book-loving hands on it! ❤️
Book 73 of 2023 - Three Impossible Wishes by Anmol Malik - An unexpected turnaround to Arya's life in her second year of college
Rating: 4 of 5
After last two books 🥺, needed something refreshing 👻, so picked this up
A few things I love about this book:
Arya, the main character, loved her from the beginning. There was something pulling towards her character instantaneously, emotions of what she was feeling were beautifully written, especially her feelings of love towards her people were so heart-rendering.
The book was fun, the narrative was very refreshing as it was based in London, so the mix of Indian vibes with Bollywood style parties, and International fusion like usual college stuff made it a really fun read.
Character awareness, Arya's arc covering her relationship with her Dad, Sahil, Vladimir and finally achieving her dream was stunning, her life and her feelings though may have gone through highs and lows, something about her awareness brought realness into the story.
The chemistry between Arya and Vladimir was sweet and refreshing because it was something unique filled with a mix of Bollywood drama and silent romance.
The food in Arya's writing was really yummy, that I got inspired to actually cook, not the usual stuff.
One part I was a bit bummed out about:
I didn't like the way the ending was panned out. It felt a bit rushed when it came to Arya and Vlad's last moments. Yes, there were some classic bollywood moments added, and I know a few things were self explanatory, but there were some unnecessary elements added in the end when I would have loved to see more of Arya and Vlad as a couple, which were cut too short, like literally two pages before the last page.
I would have cut another half star for the ending, but some moments were really good that I just couldn't. All in all, I loved the book. And yep, I felt healed a bit here too as I kept reading. I am hoping the author plans out a sequel here *wink*.
Three impossible wishes by Anmol Malik- novel- English- I read a few books on life of Indian students who are admitted to foreign universities, new atmosphere, different pronunciation of words as pronounced in India, different type of charger for mobile phone, study in library, financial crunch, friends from various nations, joint celebration of various functions at the university, limited time for each subject- study and exams, research papers, etc. First book I read is “AAG KA DARIYA BY QUARTULAIN HAIDER, in whose third part, after the partition of India, Indian and Pakistani students are admitted to British university. They stay, study together, celebrate together. Present novel, “the three impossible wishes” is the story about Indian students has been accepted to the University of Westley. Arya Mahtani is one of them. Her father has chosen the subjects for her. It about her search about whether she is a deserving student for this university and for this particular course. Whether is she occupying a seat that would be better for a more deserving student. Arya plunges in university life and makes an effort to find a reply. Back in New Delhi, Arya has a crush on a lad named Sahil Malhotra, her life was study, travel in town, eat and enjoy with friends. She comes in contact with a fellow student Vladimir Petrov. One fact which comes out from reading the book is that all students are well read and aware about classic books of world. Petrov has his own problems. University calendar is full daily activity for students which have been described to maintain continuity in the story. Students also worry about usefulness of their degree in job market. The novel is about finding love and learning to love yourself. Overall, it is a good read book for all.
I don’t remember, when I was sad, a sort of regret to catch up on a book so late. ‘Three Impossible Wishes’ by Anmol Malik is everything you need to energize and brace yourself during a hectic week. ‘Three Impossible Wishes’ is a complex book filled with wit, love, laughter & drama. This book is such a page turner, it literally pulled me out of my ‘disorientation’ of reading books. A hearty book filled with elements of an Indian Romance.
‘Three Impossible Wishes’ narrates a story of Arya Mahtani, accepted to study at the University of Westley but the poor 19 year old thinks she is nowhere suited for this opportunity in hands. Arya suffers self-doubts and cross-questioning herself that leads her fear to grow towards expulsion. Not able to justify her stay at the University, Arya seeks help from a Russian topper, Vladmir. What are the three wishes? What actually happens in the course of time? Does she really start liking the path life has set for her?
With engaging storytelling, this book has everything that makes you feel connected and hooked by the way characters and circumstances. ‘Three Impossible Wishes’ is a ride in itself especially focusing on Arya’s life and decisions.
Anmol Malik amazed me at every point with the myriad of concepts of family, friends, love and prioritizing something that you truly love. This book is about juggling between what you expect from life and what parents expect from you and maintaining a firm balance between the two. Its about adulting, decision making, overcoming self doubts.
This book is adorable and lasts forever with a ‘feel good’ notion every time you go back to the story time and again. Packed with substantial drama, ‘The Three Wishes’ by Anmol Malik is wholesome.
" Normal peer pressure gets one into alcoholism ; Indian peer pressure gets one into a job."
19 year old Arya Mahtani has been accepted to the University of Westley, where even she doesn't know what she's doing in the course that makes zero sense to her. But she's there due to her nagging father. She is someone who wants to be treated the same as everyone and blend in with the other students but somehow she always ends up becoming the laughing stalk for others.
This book is author Anmol Malik's debut work. The writing style is simple and engaging. The usage of the slangs would give you all the feels the plot requires. From the start till the end of the book, you will feel it's a Bollywood movie. From the rich, show-off Indian students to weird family equations, severed family ties, crazy best friends, one sided love, hot foreign student, this book had it all. It's also Arya's journey of finding and accepting oneself.
If you watch Bollywood movies, you might find a few familiar characters. Sahil and Arya gave me major Rahul and Anjali vibes from the first half of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
I felt the characters' descriptions could have been better, I couldn't put a face to many characters till the end. Vladimir was the only exception here. The book failed to leave a lasting impact for me.
My favorite scenes were the ones between Vladimir and Arya. She felt relatable most of the time in the story. I loved the last scene and ended the book smiling.
This book was a nice, one time romance read for me. You can pick it up, if it interests you and you might end up loving it.
The book is about a 19year old Arya who's accepted and is studying in Westley University and has missed her second year basic level test albeit now she has to achieve a perfect score to clear the second year, avoid the risk of deportation and the wrath of her dad who thinks she's a 'bheja kam'. Thus starts her hassle for survival which starts with every student life hacks and ends up into a researched jugaad that requires pursuing the stubborn and stoic Vladimir Petrov. She has to also keep up with the desi filthy rich friends of her crush cum bestie Sahil and make the right moves to get Sahil love her back instead of being friendzoned. Arya is practically a dodo who's filled with timidity, mad theories about love, self-doubt and her entangled talent around food and words.
It's an intriguing, hilarious and a page-turner, I wanted to read just 80 pages a day - whoops - I read the entire book in a single sitting...that's how amazing it is. It is a story about dreams and wishes; and how the most unusual wish comes true in the most unusual form only and only after one goes after it. It's about misunderstandings, friendship, love, laughter, failure and above all the true meaning of family and it's importance. About wacky ideas and facing risks, about people who would always go the extra mile just for you.
Three Impossible Wishes by Anmol Malik is a light, witty, and a fun novel to read when you are feeling down or need a good old-fashioned rom-com to read and relax.
Arya Mahtani, the main character, is your girl next door who has felt mediocre her entire life thanks to her super-successful Dad. His constant reminder to her that she has to hustle to get a good job has made her life more complicated than it already is.
Arya is a girl, I could relate to the core of my heart. I was her when I was in college, always finding trouble at the least expected places and dreaming of passing the exams, finding the perfect guy and be happy forever, my three impossible wishes just like her.
Will Arya be able to find her passion? Will she be able to fulfill her three impossible wishes?
You have to read the book to know all the answers. I love the portrayal of every character. Arya’s day to day out of the box troubles and her dilemmas.
𝗣𝗿𝗼-𝗧𝗶𝗽 - Keep some snacks handy while reading this book because the titles of the chapters would make you feel hungry like crazy.
It was a fantastic read. The characters were so real that I could feel them. It was like I'm the overhead camera recording everything about the protagonist, Arya Mahtani and her life. A writer's success is when a reader is pleased and it truly did. As Ayushmann Khurrana said - 'Totally cheeky, completely hilarious and endlessly charming.' The story is full of light humour and it is consistent in all the chapters.
The story is about Arya Mahtani, who is from Mumbai studying in university of Westley. The girl full of self-doubt studies there at the wish of her father but not much interested in that field. She has crush on Sahil at the university and shares a good friendship with him. But things go different after she meets a Russian guy, Valdmir Petrov.
The physical and psychological traits are well expressed and this is one of the most important thing that keeps the readers glued to the story. The story is full of humour and there will be smile in your face before you realise. Another thing that I noticed is, the separation of the chapters is well balanced almost maintaining the same number of pages for each chapter.
A beautiful line from the book - You know, I will not let you go until I hear the storm that is in your heart.
Arya Mahtani, a 19 year old from Mumbai makes it to the university of westley.
Her wishes are simple but connected to each other - 1- For sahil malhotra to kiss her at graduation 2- To get a full score in her accounting exam 3- To be happy.
Arya is full of self doubt and also fears deportation due to a class test that she missed. To avoid deportation she seeks help from a Russian guy, Vladimir. Arya wants him to solve her papers but Vlad is stubborn and refuses to help if she doesn't gets him a date.
#review - The irresistible and the eye catching cover is what made me pick up this book. The book is full of wit and charm. The author has a way with the words such that it was gripping all throughout. Despite being a lengthy read, it didn't feel like a drag. I noticed that the title of every chapter is a food name such as ' Tea With Brandy' , 'Espresso' , 'Krispy Kreme' and so on. It's a fun filled read full of drama, humor, friendship, love and felt like a breath of fresh air.
Let's just take a minute to appreciate the gorgeous and cheeky cover. It absolutely goes with the story line.
This is a kind of book that will make you smile and think and take on a rollercoaster ride.
Arya Mahtani, a 19 year old gets admission in the University of Westley. Unaware of her worth, she is trying to impress her crush & friend Sahil along with juggling her studies and fear of failure which might lead to deportation. This makes her reach out the topper of her class, a Russian student Vladimir Petrov.
This is where her life takes turn, along with her teenage struggles and her relationships, we also get to see her as a girl who doesn't know her worth. As the story progresses, the characters of Arya & Vladimir are so well developed. Their back stories give out the reasons of why they are what they are today.
I absolutely loved the sublime touch of humor and self discovery to the story. Very well written and the language is very easy too.
To begin with the cover, it’s really beautiful. It is really colourful and abstract and cheeky just like its story. A very big thumbs up for the designer who made this cover.
Some books make you fall in love with the words, and some with characters, but this book made me fall in love with myself. Just like its story, this book has its own charisma and have an effect, that you just cant stop reading it and admring the characters. So cutely narrated, that I actually felt, that a friend was narrating me her story. It was just so relatable. Easy words and relatable language makes it a good read even for the beginners. You will continuously have a smile on your face, while reading this book
Honestly, this book made me make my own list with my three impossible wishes and I hope the most impossible ones comes true, just as Arya’s Mom said Want to know more ? Read the book!
3 IMPOSSIBLE WISHES This book is highly recommended, a beautiful story line. You can get the summary of the book at the back but if you want to know what it is to read that book and how the situation feels like, you might get the answer here. You may get to know the end of the story right at the beginning but the way it’s written, it perpetuates you to complete it that very day. A cheery and jolly romantic comedy with delicious titles. Yes! I said “delicious” , the name of the title of every chapter is just different and gallant in itself. Though there are a few punctuation errors, but that is completely neglected when the story is amazing. All in all this is a perfect book for when you are in any mood. Enjoy!
