When she was just one and a half, Jane took a handful of earthworms to bed with her. As soon as Jane's mom explained that worms need soil to live, Jane ran outside and returned the worms to their garden.

Jane Goodall has always loved animals - she would watch them for hours and learn as much as she could about their habitats and behaviors.

When she grew up, she was granted the opportunity to move from England to study chimpanzees in Africa, and (of course) she leapt at that chance.

And as soon as she got into the field, she literally just sat and waited and watched and took notes.

Mr. McGregor, one of the first chimps Jane met, was often grumpy, so Jane named him after the crabby gardener in the book The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Jane often gave the animals human characteristics because, well, they behaved like humans - showing joy, anger and sadness.

She published all of her discoveries and then went back for a formal degree in science.

When she was back in school...her teachers had a few words for her.

Right away, her professors told her that she was doing it all wrong! The said that real scientists labeled animals with numbers, not names.

But, she knew she was right - and so she went off to prove them wrong and to show that everyone, even the animals, had a little bit of human in them.

Jane Goodall is one of my absolute favorite scientists - and this book truly did her justice.

I loved the way she completely revolutionized the field and find it so completely and utterly inspiring.

This book is relatively short but it's the kind of book where you know that each sentence is chosen with care. It really does a great job of conveying her entire life across a few short pages.

The characterization of Jane Goodall was excellent - she came to life in this book and I adored it.

I absolutely LOVED the illustrations - they took the book and brought it to the next level. In particular, when Jane was a little girl in the chicken coop - so incredibly cute.

All in all, this book was FABULOUS - I loved it to death and I cannot wait to see what Katz writes next!!

This illustrated biography for young readers introduces Jane Goodall to children, covering her childhood, scientific career, family, and work as an activist. I learned multiple things that I didn't know, and appreciated the well-paced, clearly communicated information. The book covers environmental issues without politically charged language, and is straightforward and informative.

Like the other books in this series, this one includes a timeline, a glossary, a quiz, discussion prompts, and other appealing features. The ending summarizes Goodall's impact on the world, and encourages kids to consider how she can inspire them. However, I greatly disliked one of the final discussion questions. It talks about the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math, and then asks kids which of those subjects is their favorite. NONE OF THEM. Not one. All of my favorite subjects are in the humanities, and I'm tired of books like this shoving STEM down kids' throats regardless whether they have the interest or aptitude for it.

Growing up, when I was bored I would delve into my father's National Geographic collection. He built a long shelf in the basement with the magazines ordered by year and month. I was fascinated by the stories of Jane Goodall and her chimpanzees that used tools. I remember when she married her photographer and I remember their son, Grub.

Now, young people of today can learn about Goodall's life and contributions through The Story of Jane Goodall by Susan B. Katz.

Children will relate to Jane the animal-loving child and be inspired by her courageous choice to be the first to observe chimpanzees in the wild.

Timelines, a glossary, maps, and quiz and challenges aid the learning process.

For sixty years, Goodall has studied and protect the chimps and is now an activist to protect their vanishing habitat.

I loved to read biographies as a child, especially of women who impacted the world. Katz has also written books in this series on Frida Kahlo and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Thanks NetGalley for the chance to review this book! My 8 year old daughter is a big Jane Goodall fan, so I couldn't resist the chance to read this concise, early chapter book biography.

I really enjoyed this. The text was easy to understand, and I could envision teachers and parents reading this aloud with ease. I especially liked the extra features, including the glossary, "think tank" questions for further inquiry, timelines, and annotated maps. The extra features did not distract from the story at all and certainly enhanced my reading of it. I would definitely recommend this book.

This is a nicely illustrated biography of the illustrious Jane Goodall geared toward new readers. It has great facts, and I love that it includes a photo of Jane and Jubilee. While this book might be a good introduction to a textbook-feel, I worry that for a person who's just learning to read, the pull quotes, sidebars, timelines, etc. that break up the text will be more of a distraction than a cool feature. I'll have to test it out on some kids and see what they think! I like that there's a quiz at the end, and overall, I find the book engaging and fun!

This book is exactly what it bills itself to be: a biography for new readers. Though its 64 pages did not reveal anything new about the primatologist and animal rights activist, I am sure it will be a revelation for many students in elementary school, which is why, as a teacher, I will be purchasing a copy for my classroom library. I loved the illustrations that accompany the text, but my favorite feature was the questions in the "Jump in the Think Tank" inserts. They inspire reflection in ways that are meaningful to any student, not just those who admire or wish to emulate Goodall.

SYNOPSIS

Dame Jane Morris Goodall DBE is world renowned for her study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees. Over 60 years of studying primates have established her as the worlds leading authority on chimpanzees. She also founded the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots programme. She was named a UN Messenger of Peace in April 2002.

As the title makes clear, The Story of Jane Goodall describes the life of Dame Jane Goodall. It takes us through the evolution of Jane. From her formative years as a young girl in England through her life experiences and the fortunate accident that ushered her to become a woman of letters. Katz’s relates the ups and the downs of Jane Goodall’s life and experiences. Through her skilled writing Katz relates Jane’s enthusiasm for her subject.

Katz does a great job describing Janes’s life. She goes into detail such as: the type of books that Jane loved to read as a child, her ambitions to travel to Africa and her love of animals. She describes how Jane got her job in Kenya with Louis Leakey, an archaeologist and paleontologist. Katz relates how working with the notable Leakey led Jane to earn her PhD in ethology. She went to Newman College, Cambridge and became the eighth person to be allowed to study for a PhD there without first having obtained a BA or BSc. All of which just begins the truly remarkable life of Dr. Goodall.

CONCLUSION

The Story of Jane Goodall is a refreshing new take on an old genre; that of the biography. Katz’s years spent as a teacher are obvious from the outset. Her prose is written with children in mind, and yet speaking as an adult, I enjoyed the simplicity and the clarity of her writing style.

Above all, The Story of Jane Goodall is fun and enjoyable throughout. Children will learn the importance of Jane Goodall’s work in conservation. Katz’s ensures her audience will comprehend the value of Janes’s findings from her research and how her work changed the world of primatology forever.

The illustrations contained within the pages are delightful. They are age appropriate, colorful and fun. Lindsay Dale-Scott did an excellent job telling the story through pictures. I especially liked the way she put faces with the names of Jane’s chimpanzees. I thoroughly enjoyed her art work.

The Story of Jane Goodall is a tiny gem; enlightening, informative, compelling and concise. Large enough to satisfy and short enough to read in an hour or two. The timeline is interspersed through the chapters and easy to follow. Included are many memory retention tools and quizzes. I loved this book, and you will too.

"The Story of Jane Goodall: A Biography Book for New Readers", by Susan B. Katz, is an enjoyable and informative read about an amazing human being who has dedicated her life to the study and preservation of chimpanzees and other endangered species. Jane Goodall was born in London, England in 1934. As a toddler, Jane showed a fascination and love for animals that has continued into her eighties. She and her younger sister often explored their surroundings, and they formed a nature-lovers group with other children. Jane loved to observe animals, and her favorite childhood book (just like mine) was "The Story of Doctor Dolittle" because the doctor could talk to the animals. After graduating from high school, Jane became a secretary, but once she fulfilled her dream of traveling to Africa, she began to live out her dream of studying and working with animals. Jane learned much in her time as a secretary for Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous scientist who was also an anthropologist and paleontologist. She took on an important project of studying chimpanzees in the wild. The more time that Jane spent around the chimps, the more she noted the similarities between humans and chimps. She even learned to communicate with the chimps by mimicking their calls. Once Jane learned of the dangers to the chimps from poachers and threats to their habitat, she began a tireless campaign to bring awareness to people around the world about chimpanzees and their environment. For over six decades she has been a dedicated scientist, researcher, speaker, and writer, and she also founded The Jane Goodall Institute and other organizations which work tirelessly to protect wildlife and to preserve our environment. Throughout the book, you will find "think tank" questions to broaden your perspective, and a quiz to see how much you have learned. This book is a great biography, chapter book for children in elementary school, specifically aged from 6-8.

Jane Goodall is an outstanding woman who set out to achieve her dreams and ended up living them. This books takes you, briefly, through Jane's life. Starting with where she was born and how her curiosity for nature and animals, led her to wanting to work with Chimps. This book informs readers of everything Jane accomplished; The Jane Goodall Institute, Roots and Shoots, and TACARE. She proved that although she was a woman and didn't previously have an education, none of this was going to stop her from obtaining a PHD and creating all of those powerful institutions that impacted the lives of these beautiful endangered species.

Another aspect of this book that I enjoy is that it already has a a mini multiple choice "mini-quiz" at the end of it, to help students recount what they have read. This book can be applied in a classroom in a multiple of ways. Starting with showing students that they are fully capable of doing what they dream of or ask students what it is they enjoy doing and how that can be applied to what they want to be when they grow up. There is also a section that has "Myth vs Fact", this could be a good segway into showing students the difference between these two words and possibly begin to introduce folklore or fairy tales (that may be a long shot but it just goes to show that if you are creative enough, you can find ways to use a book to teach a specific lesson)

I've always been interested in the story of Jane Goodall. I'm not interested in the science, so much as I am the story of how she found a pursued her passion, and changed the world as a result. Yes, I know I am an adult, but I am also a teacher, and because of that I can read whatever children's books I'm interested in for the sake of "research". Lol.
I am really enjoying this series of biography books. One of my favorite features is a little blurb in the book called "Jump in the think tank" where they take a fact that was discussed in the book and ask the reader to think about how it relates to themselves or the world around them. For example, in this book, there is a section that discusses Jane's hard work in school, and the think tank question is, "How does staying focused hep you reach your goal? Do you have a goal you want to reach someday? If so, what is it?" The teacher side of me really likes this aspect of the book, because it takes the reading and helps the student apply the knowledge to their life. Not only will this help them better recall what they read, but it may give the inspiration and camaraderie with the person in the biography. We could all use another good influence in our lives.
There is enough information in this book that kids could write a short book report on Jane Goodall, so there's that bonus as well.
I recommend this book for kids who are interested in animals or Jane Goodall.

In The Story of Jane Goodall, the reader is introduced to this well-known scientist first through her traits and the world that she grew up in. As is with the series, the book explores the Goodall's life further in eight chapters that breakdown her life through her early years, how she received the job that made her famous, what she did to make her famous in the world and how her life has unraveled while leading her to a life of activism on top of everything that has been credited to her name.

The rest of the book has thoughtful questions scattered throughout the telling as well as myth versus fact inserts to provide the reader with more information. Furthermore the book has a glossary in the back to describe all the words that were in bold format throughout the book as well as a timeline with important dates at the end of each chapter. And to further help the reader to understand what they learned about in the reading there is included in the back a quiz as well as a legacy-type page that explains how her contributions have helped in the world of animal conservation worldwide, including the United States.

This book is a great story and introduction to one of the most important female scientists while I would recommend it as a read for strong women and or S.T.E.M courses to those who are looking to explore those subjects.

The book “The Story of Jane Goodall” is a biography about Jane Goodall’s life and what she contributed to studying animals. This book’s age range is 6-9 years old and is a Biography of her life. This book goes from her early years to the work she did caring for animals. This book shows how she defied everyone’s expectations about a woman working together with animals. I rated this book 4 stars. I really did love the story this book talked about her life. It told from her early years and every aspect of her life. I really do think that this language fits young kids as it doesn’t use scientific complicated words. The thing I would have to critique is the pictures. I feel that they are not really done that well as they are kind of small and kids at this age still like to see a visual image which can be hard when they are few and far between and when they are small. However, I do think that this book would be interesting for kids as I know they might be interested in a story about a scientist saving animals against all the odds. I would use this book in my class as far as determining influential women in the world as she really made a big difference with helping to save the chimps from polio, finding out why they separated into two classes, and still fighting for endangered animals around the world.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I think everyone knows the name Jane Goodall and associates her name with chimps. There’s so much more to her life story than that, though, and this book fills in the blanks.

The Story of Jane Goodall is written for young readers, but I found it interesting as well. I recently watched a documentary about her, but there were still some facts in this book that I didn’t know.

There are some extras in The Story of Jane Goodall that are included in all of the books in this series, and they will encourage children to learn. Some of the words are bold which means they are in the glossary in the back. There are also family trees, time lines, and graphics called “Myths vs. Facts.” Occasionally, there’s an arrow with “Jump in the Think Tank” suggestions, which encourage children to express how they might feel in the same situation. There’s a quiz at the end as well as additional Think Tank questions.

It’s important to teach youngsters about Jane Goodall. She not only did some amazing work with chimps, but she did so when women’s options were limited as far as their careers. This is definitely a book that should be in every child’s library.

Jane Goodall has been one of my heroines for years. I remember reading about her in National Geographic when I was younger. It is great that a new generation of readers is getting exposed to her amazing work. Kudos to the author and publisher for bringing this pioneer to the stage for these younger readers.

This biography, geared for “new readers”, shares the highlights of Jane’s life and work. One of the most interesting aspects of that life is how, with no formal training, she established new norms for how to study and understand primates – particularly chimpanzees. This should be an encouragement to these young people, that they too can make a difference. You don’t have to wait until you are older or have some degree on your wall – start now.

With stories like this to inspire, it will be amazing to see what the future holds.

Katz is a good writer and the illustrations by Lindsay Dale Scott are spectacular. Not to take away from what Katz has done, as a writer, but the illustration will keep the young reader engaged making the book that much better for its intended audience.

This is a nice biography on the life of Jane Goodall. It has childhood stories of Jane, you can tell that early on she was fascinated with animals. She had a lot of patience and you can see why she was so good with observing the guerillas. It all started at 4years old when she wanted to observe hens laying eggs.

The book is appropriate for 7-10 year olds. The book is easy to read and understand. The illustrations are engaging and interesting in this book.
The book has a great mix of vocabulary throughout words like naturalist, malaria, camouflage, endangered, and other vocabulary. A glossary is provided in the back of the book also with the words and a definition.

A timeline weaves its way through the book for you to have a visual imprint of the events. I love the thought provoking questions, myths and facts and the book ends with a 10-question quiz.

I love Rockridge Press' quality series "A Biography Book for New Readers", and am happy to have requested a review copy from the publisher with no requirement. Jane Goodall's story does not disappoint!

Jane's story is well-told, with beautiful illustrations throughout the book. The book includes maps, "jump in the think tank" questions, timelines, "myth and fact" boxes, a glossary, a multiple choice quiz at the end for reading comprehension, and a bibliography to explore some more. Her story is inspirational, fun, and full of her lifelong love for animals.

My one regret: Jane Goodall's story is not complete without her focus on vegetarianism and veganism in the last few decades. She is a strong vegan activist who works hard for social justice for animals AND the environment. Since this is such an important aspect of her life, I wish this had been included. I recommend her book Harvest for Hope for more information.

This author is an awarded Bilingual Author, however for the book itself I could not find any awards. This book tells about the life of Jane Goodall and her research on chimpanzees. She was the first person to observe that chimpanzees used tools like humans do. She later on She participated in movements to get the government to protect these animals. I love books like these that explain the life of someone impactful to what we know now. It is almost hard to believe the things we know now were not common to know. I personally did not know who this was until I was researching for Children Biographies. I am glad I found this and found out it was a woman who made this discovery! I it it a 4/5.

I ADORE biographies geared toward young readers. Not only do they educate children on influential people of the past, but they inspire readers' futures.

I can't tell you how many times I was inspired and influenced by reading biographies as a child. I loved learning about Anne Frank, Laura Ingalls Wilder, etc. Their stories stirred a hunger in me to make a difference.

This biography tells about the scientist, Jane Goodall, who studied chimpanzees in the African forests. She became an expert in her field and an inspiration to countless others, by becoming a world-famous female scientist.

I love this multi-authored biographical series from Rockridge Press, and the inspiration these stories spark in young readers age 6-8.

This book is a good introduction to Jane Goodall. The chapters are very short and concise. There is a timeline that runs through the book and a quiz toward the end. My favorite feature was the "Jump in the Think Tank" segments that asked questions to enhance creative thinking. I also enjoyed the Myth vs Fact Sections. Although this book is written for young children, I felt I learned while reading to my children and found my interest and curiosity piqued to know more about Dr. Jane Goodall.

An engaging children’s biography book detailing the life of Jane Goodall. Provides interesting details and insights into her life. Explained in a clear language for the young reader. What an exciting installment in the Biography for New Readers series from Rockridge Press! Representation is so important for children, and this is a perfect example!

This book gives an overview of the life and work of Jane Goodall, in an accessible and appropriate way for children. Beginning with her early life as a young girl fascinated by nature and straight through to the present and her activism work for conservation, this book should capture the interest and inspire young naturalists!

Like other books in this series, The Story of Jane Goodall includes beautiful illustrations, a glosary at the end and timelines throughout for clarity, a reading comprehension quiz, fun blurbs of fact vs. myth about Dr. Goodall, and my favorite piece, the "Jump Into the Think Tank" questions. I would give this a solid 4-4.5 stars, the only thing that I would change is that I would have loved to see more think tank questions!

wonderful early biographies

A great step for kids who are not quite ready for the Who Was series, but who want more than a picture book. The chapters are small enough that they can tackle them with ease and there is a ton of great information.

I used this ebook to teach my students about the life, work and accomplishments of Jane Goodall as part of a study of Women's History month. It is a great book for the age range I teach! The kids loved it and really enjoyed learning more about Jane's life!
