Daniel Keyes was an American author best known for his Hugo award-winning short story and Nebula award-winning novel Flowers for Algernon. Keyes was given the Author Emeritus honor by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2000.

Keyes was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. At age 17, he joined the U.S. Maritime Service as ship's purser. He obtained a B.A. in psychology from Brooklyn College, and after a stint in fashion photography (partner in a photography studio), earned a Master's Degree in English and American Literature at night while teaching English in New York City public schools during the day and writing weekends.

In the early 1950s, he was editor of the pulp magazine Marvel Science Fiction for publisher Martin Goodman. Circa 1952, Keyes was one of several staff writers, officially titled editors, who wrote for such horror and science fiction comics as Journey into Unknown Worlds, for which Keyes wrote two stories with artist Basil Wolverton. From 1955-56, Keyes wrote for the celebrated EC Comics, including its titles Shock Illustrated and Confessions Illustrated, under both his own name and the pseudonyms Kris Daniels, A.D. Locke and Dominik Georg.

The short story and subsequent novel, Flowers for Algernon, is written as progress reports of a mentally disabled man, Charlie, who undergoes experimental surgery and briefly becomes a genius before the effects tragically wear off. The story was initially published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and the expanded novel in 1966. The novel has been adapted several times for other media, most prominently as the 1968 film Charly, starring Cliff Robertson (who won an Academy Award for Best Actor) and Claire Bloom. He also won the Hugo Award in 1959 and the Nebula Award in 1966.

Keyes went on to teach creative writing at Wayne State University, and in 1966 he became an English and creative writing professor at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, where he was honored as a professor emeritus in 2000.

Keyes' other books include The Fifth Sally, The Minds of Billy Milligan, The Touch, Unveiling Claudia, and the memoir Algernon, Charlie, and I: A Writer's Journey.

I started reading this because I just finished Ted Chiang's Understand (as part of Stories of Your Life and Others), which was also about a person with scientifically enhanced intelligence. Not quite satisfied with the ending of that one, I got curious about how the same idea was executed in its classical version, and wow I did not expect to like it so much more.

Flowers for Algernon, in both its short story and novel form, has always been a popular choice for reading materials in English classes. While I generally hate reading assignments as much as everyone else, I now understand how this one in particular earned its place. The characterization is amazing. There's no "telling" of what kind of person Charlie is from beginning to end (except the very basic description of dumb/smart), but every word and every sentence shows you exactly who he is. There aren't excessive details of his interaction with other characters either, but through every simple dialogue and expression, we glimpse so easily into their thoughts and the many facets of humanity reflected through them.

And those facets of humanity are so accurately portrayed. It's a bit scary to think that I could still relate so easily to a book written over 60 years ago, and even scarier to think that I can totally think of people I know in real life that would match Charlie's behavior at all the different stages of his intelligence. Does that simply mean I'm subconsciously holding some type of prejudice or stereotype against these people, which the author also shares? Or do intellectual levels truly affect certain personality traits, resulting in these correlations and projections? Now I need to go do my research.

An artfully, creatively written story that definitely makes you think, and not lacking an emotional punch either. Glad I'm reading it now instead of in middle school, because otherwise all of its greatness would've flown right over my head.

update: Hi. Help this is future me and rereading my review—wth am I even trying to say? I found this short story beautiful—but not? And why did I give this 5 stars? What was I thinking? (I’m gonna leave it there though because I really don’t know how to rate these things omg.) And I edited my review a bit so that it’s less corny. (🙄)

5 ⭐️’s

Hmm I read this short story for school a while back as I was studying this for literature and forgot to mark this as read. Me getting scolded by my teacher for misunderstanding the text today reminded me that I had actually read this. 😀

Although this isn’t close to a hundred pages, it took me more than a week to finish this. 😀 Everyone should give this a try. It’s a really easy read. And I feel like most would appreciate this more than me!

🥀┊SPOILER-FREE REVIEW

I think you should go into this one blind, just knowing that it’s a short story about the value of knowledge. But here’s a review anyway! 😊

ᝰ.ᐟ 𝓺𝓾𝓲𝓬𝓴 (𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓽𝓪𝓵) 𝓼𝓾𝓶𝓶𝓪𝓻𝔂:
Charlie is really dumb. He has always had this dream to be super smart. When his teacher and two scientists give Charlie the decision to help them test out this new treatment which, supposedly, triples the intelligence of any human/animal. Charlie accepts it without hesitation. Through this journey, Charlie is instructed to write a series of progress reports so that the scientists can track his growth. While Charlie becomes incredibly smart, he experiences and becomes social-emotionally aware of the world around him. He realises a few things, as well as the ugly truth about human beings.

A beautiful story (but honestly, I only think it’s ‘beautiful’ because it was part of my school’s syllabus to study this particular prose. If my school chose this, of course it’s beautiful lol. But, if I’m not wrong, Daniel Keyes had won multiple huge awards for this short story, and not the novel version he had expanded this into a few years later. If I had just read this for fun, I would probably think it’s an average story with an interesting premise.) Flowers for Algernon is just a really meaningful story about intelligence and happiness, and what it means to have one without the other (I think? As I said, I didn’t fully grasp this short story 😅). The writing style is unique, especially since this is written in ‘progress reports’, so a diary of sorts, to track Charlie’s emotional and intellectual growth before and after the operation to triple his intelligence level. It was trying to portray Charlie's initial level of intelligence, which is super low, so it had a bunch of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors made by Charlie. It was actually difficult to read the text in some parts. This story was, of course, sad as well. 💔 And in case you were wondering, Algernon is a lab rat, and the first living thing the scientists used the treatment on. Charlie is the first human being.

ᝰ.ᐟ 𝓺𝓾𝓸𝓽𝓮𝓼 (all these are exactly from the short story; spelling and grammar mistakes were intentional to show Charlie’s lack of intelligence at the start):

❝ Miss Kinnian says maybe they can make me smart. I want to be smart. ❞

❝ He says it took a long time with Algernon before he got 3 times smarter then he was before. Thats why Algernon beats me all the time because he had that operashun too. That makes me feel better. I coud probably do that amazed faster than a regular mouse. Maybe some day Ill beat Algernon. Boy that would be something. So far Algernon looks like he mite be smart perminent. ❞

❝ I beat Algernon! I dint even know I beat him until Bert the tester told me. Then the second time I lost because I got so excited I fell off the chair before I finished. But after that I beat him 8 more times. I must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon. But I dont feel smarter. ❞

❝ I felt bad to beat him ❞

❝ I dont think its right to make you pass a test to eat. ❞

❝ Today, I lerned, the comma, this is a comma (,) a period, with a tail ❞

❝ People don’t talk to me much anymore or kid around the way they used to. It makes the job kind of lonely. ❞

❝ Once again now I have the feeling of shame burning inside me. This intelligence has driven a wedge between me and all the people I once knew and loved. Before, they laughed at me and despised me for my ignorance and dullness; now, they hate me for my knowledge and understanding. What in God’s name do they want of me? ❞

❝ Only a short time ago, I learned that people laughed at me. Now I can see that unknowingly I joined with them in laughing at myself. That hurts most of all. ❞

Literature confuses me very much.

Amazing short story of wanting to belong in earnest to discovery you want to belong to the wrong group. Charlie Gordon has a low IQ and is a slow learner, he becomes a test subject for an operation to make him smart. Initially, the operation works. Later, the effects of the surgery wears off and Charlie reverts back to himself.

The pain of knowing so called friends were ridiculing you for being different and you not having the mental capacity to be aware. Only to find out that you yourself was becoming one of them and having the emotional empathy to understand, not I. Charlie will help others from what he has learned. Well written and believable from the journals of Charlie Gordon himself in his own words. A must read.

Quotes:

I dint know that mice were so smart. Maybe thats because Algernon is a white mouse. Maybe white mice are smarter then other mice.

He says my brains are leming when I sleep and that will help me when Miss Kinnian starts my lessons in the hospitl (only I found out it isnt a hospitil its a labatory).

The test still doesn't make sense to me. It seems to me that anyone could make up lies about things that they didn't really see. How could he know I wasn't making a fool of him by mentioning things that I didn't really imagine? Maybe I'll understand it when Dr. Strauss lets me read up on psychology.

ʚɞ my thoughts:

❀ i’m sobbing cuz why did it have to end like that 😭 this book made me feel so many things and the concept was really quite interesting 🥹
i’ve never really read a sci-fi novel before but i loved this! keep in mind it is the short story though so it’s pretty fast paced! i was quite literally tearing up at the end and i was like no if i cry my face will be all puffy and red lol 😠 off topic but the amount of homework i have is diabolical. a project in history, new assignment today, and a 100 question packet. THATS JUST HISTORY. now more demurely we have algebra which is just a study guide except i’m really confused.. ela we have a assignment, summary thing, finish reading our book, finish the study guide for the book and vocab! 😀 spanish i have a new project and a vocab sheet (keep in mind all this stuff is due friday or tomorrow or next week) unfortunately i’m leaving early on friday so i’m missing my math test 😔 you’re probably like wtf why well its becuz i have horrible memory 😭 i forget things so fast its actually crazy. sorry for the rant on to the review ☝️🤓 also sorry no quotes or mini playlist cuz its 11 on a school night so yay me 💀

ʚɞ characters:

⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ charlie gordon

❀ my sweet baby i love him so much and he deserves the world. at the end it was so sad seeing him slowly deteriorate and him being so distraught 😭 when he realized his friends were actually just making fun of him and weren’t his real friends it broke a piece of my heart 😭 he got so lonely and the fact that at the end he didn’t care about being made fun of anymore he just wanted a friend 🥺 he truly cares about algernon too because he goes and puts flowers on his grave and cries 😭 this man is so precious and it makes me lowkey so sad what happened to him like whyy 😭😭

ʚɞ overall:

❀ again the plot was fast paced because it was a short story so it kept me hooked! it was interesting to see his abilities and grammatical accuracy improve and regress over time. this book represents why sometimes ignorance is bliss, and that you shouldn’t mess with the human mind and respect and value people no matter how intelligent they are.

This was a July LiteRAT book club pick, but it took me a while to finish because it hit me super duper hard. I cried my way through the entire final act.
This story is about mental illness, society's expectations, and the horror of no longer knowing how to do things that once took no effort. What hit me especially hard was that it was also a story about the inner worlds we all possess, even for people who society typically overlooks. It's about hope when it easily could have been about how worthless living after being forced to return to the cave is, and I appreciate that a lot. I was considering reading the novel version, but honestly I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if it was in longer form - this was just detailed enough to avoid being torture-porn-y, while still being hard hitting.
I should read more short stories that are adaptations of philosophical theories, it's a fantastic framework for an effective emotional journey.
