Shade of Devil #1

Devil's Dream

The greatest trick the First Vampire ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist.

If you enjoyed the Blade or Underworld movies, you will love the Shade of Devil series.

Before the now-infamous Count Dracula ever tasted his first drop of blood, Sorin Ambrogio owned the night. Humanity fearfully called him the Devil.

Cursed by the gods, Sorin spent centuries bathing Europe in oceans of blood with his best friends, Lucian and Nero, the world's first Werewolf and Warlock-an unholy trinity if there ever was one. Until the three monsters grew weary of the carnage, choosing to leave it all behind and visit the brave New World across the ocean. As they befriended a Native American tribe, they quickly forgot that monsters can never escape their past.

But Dracula-Sorin's spawn-was willing to do anything to erase Sorin's name from the pages of history so that he could claim the title of the world's first vampire all for himself. Dracula hunts him down and slaughters the natives, fatally wounding Sorin in the attack. Except a Shaman manages to secretly cast Sorin into a healing slumber.

For five hundred years.

Until Sorin is awoken by a powerful Shaman in present-day New York City. In a world he doesn't understand, Sorin only wants one thing-to kill Dracula and anyone else who stands in his path. When the descendant of an infamous vampire hunter steps into his life, Sorin is torn between conflicting feelings in his heart-revenge or love. But to a woman like Victoria Helsing, it might just be considered a bloody good date.

The streets of New York City will flow with rivers of blood, and the fate of the world rests in the hands of the Devil, Sorin Ambrogio.

Because this town isn't big enough for the both of them.

So, I think 3.5 stars is appropriate for this book. Rounded to 4 because I feel generous.

The pacing was OK... not fast enough for my liking but because it was focused on the history of how everything occurred, and spin a little mystery in there, it takes time to draw out. I get it.

Still, it could have gone faster.

The fact that this was not a romance, as I mentioned in my notes, did not deter me, but then I need lots of riveting writing and plot and action and suspense or humor or all of the above to compensate in order for me to grant 5 stars.

I got some of that, but not all of it. I skipped some, not whole chunks but I certainly didn't analyze every word. The writing is perfectly fine, but I was expecting this author's reputed trademark snark and humor to be snarkier and funnier than it actually was.

Those darned expectations of mine! When do I learn? Never have them if you don't want to be disappointed.

Anyway, the revised mythology around the curse of the first vamp was interesting enough. But I was kinda disappointed to learn as I got toward the end that this whole trilogy is centered around the Devil. I thought maybe the next book would be about the werewolf and the 3rd on the sorcerer. And since I had this misconception, I kept waiting for the Devil's story to just GET ON WITH IT.

It did not get on.

Alas, all 3 books are dedicated to 1 person. And apparently I'm to look forward to this 1 man being in a lusty triangle with at least 2 women.

Not my favorite thing, even if this isn't a romance.

Still, I got both books 2 and 3 waiting on my Kindle, so...

This new series by Shayne Silvers starts as a blast. Rich backstory, great characters, intense action, and humor explode off of the page, giving the reader a hell of a ride. I loved seeing all of these moving parts weaving this tapestry together. And, as one would expect, the author turns known mythologies on their head. This series is going to be fun. Excellent book 1!

Goosebumps. I was hesitant about this book because I had concerns that Mr. Silvers would write something too similar to his Templeverse. I was wrong to worry. This story is fresh, exciting and different. It is difficult to find different done well, and here it is done superbly.

The cast of characters is strong and witty. Mr. Silvers’ trademark banter and humour is interwoven in a story with depth. The longer I read, the more I wanted to. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I finally read a Shayne Silvers book. Yay! For some reason I had joined his Facebook page (I think it had something to do with Domino Finn) and everyone there goes crazy about him. He also seems like an all around swell guy.

Shayne Silvers is good, and he's really funny. His own version of vampires, werewolves and warlocks is fresh and interesting. I like how the story incorporates Helsing and Frankenstein. The story was great. The action was great. The only problem I had was the down time between scenes. Obvious page fillers were inserted. Skimming through most of this is what brought my rating down.

If it wasn't for all the overplayed hype on his page I would have probably given this 4 stars. I really did enjoy this read, and I will probably read more by Shayne Silvers. I am interested in his Nate Temple series. Apparently, there's an asshole unicorn in there.

3.5/5

Vampires. Werewolves. Shamans. Monster Hunters. Pulpy humor. Outbursts of violence. Orgasms. Women begging Sorin to vuck* them. I know it sounds bad, but it isn't.

I wouldn't say it's a great book (what with all the corny moments) but it sure is addictive.

*vuck = vampire suck, a process usually associated with a sucked person reaching climax at least few times.

Just plain awful

The premise for this book required the author to walk a tightrope across the chasm of trope and cheesiness. Instead the story sprints to the edge and swan dives off in such a spectacular garbage fashion that I should be impressed. Sadly the story falls right past the “so bad it’s good” point and into the endless pit of “total garbage”. It is amazingly apparent that the author didn’t even take an hour to read about history, of any kind. Or to even figure out a proper timeline, as the one in the story is nonsensical and counters itself on a number of occasions.
And the cheesiness, god, who came up with the idea for this story? It reads like it was written by a 12 year old who is obsessed with “Underworld” and has watched “Avengers” one too many times.
I could go on, but at this point I think I’ve spent more time reviewing this book than the author did writing it.

I’ve been a fan of the Templeverse for years, and I was excited to see the author was going to write another series. I admit to vampries not being my favorite paranormal creature, but this seemed like an original take. And, it really was. Sorin, or the Devil as he was known, made Dracula many, many years ago, but Sorin got tired of the rat race, so to speak, and left to go to the New World. What follows is an intriguing adventure, very different from the Templeverse but still the great writing we’ve come to expect from this author. Sorin is nothing like Nate; he’s sophisticated, cold, a gentleman, and even-tempered. He is just like Nate in that he’s loyal, a fighter, and will do what it takes to do the right thing…now. I just loved this series-starter, and after that ending, I can’t wait for the next one! Highly recommend!

Found this little gem on kindle unlimited .... I really enjoyed this fantasy book with old school characters involved. Sorin is the first vampire that created Dracula. Sorin travels to the americas before colonization and is adopted in a Native American tribe. Dracula sets out to kill Sorin to be the most powerful vampire. It sets forth a chain reaction of revenge. This book has vampires, werewolves, witches, and warlocks. I will def continue to read this trilogy set.

I can say very little about the actual story in this review that wouldn’t be a spoiler, given this is the debut of a brand-new series. But I can rave about it!
I already love Shayne Silvers’ writing, and have read every word he’s put out. In Devil’s Dream, he just gets even better. I’m madly in love with Sorin Ambrogio, my new favorite vampire. This guy is all man, and quite comfortable with his monstrous nature.
Goodness, what isn’t in this book? There is definitely blood, buckets of the stuff, like – Rodriguez/Tarantino gore. There’s humor. Sorin is a 16th-century vamp in modern NYC, after all. It’s ripe with humorous possibilities, but they aren’t overdone. There’s sex, sort-of (wink). There’s pathos, danger, magic, action… Heck, there’s even a bit of a Castlevania vibe. Devil’s Dream is also grounded, to an extent, in the Native American lore of the Northeastern US, researched, and well done.
Sorin is an engaging character, surrounded by an equally wonderful supporting cast of Medicine Men, werewolves, vampires and vampire hunters. And one really obstreperous doctor. The primary setting is Manhattan and its underground, and it’s well-established just how weird New York can be.
Wait.
Reading what I’ve written, it seems I’ve outlined an impossible mélange that might make you doubtful it could all work. But it does. It works. In fact, it’s wildly successful. I haven’t been this excited by a new fantasy entry since, well, at least since discovering Silvers’ Nate Temple books. I’m in love with the whole thing. I’m betting (even odds) that you will be, too.

Devil's Dream - a review by Rosemary Kenny

The original vampire, preceding even Dracula, crosses continents in times long past, forging a new life and family among the Native Indian inhabitants of North America, in what seems to be his new beginning and a chance to abandon and forget his previous blood-sucking ways.
When a horror from Sorin Ambrogio's past follows the exile to the New World, innocent blood flows like a river and claims the lives of all but Sorin and a single shaman, whom he instructs to put him in a healing coma that's only supposed to be temporary...the reality is very far from what he expected.

A riveting tale of hatred, blood-lust, monsters, vampires, eternal love, revenge, new beginnings and much more, Shayne Silvers' Devil's Dream begins his new series, Shade of Devil, that's sure to be #1 on your fantasy-horror-new beginnings bookshelves...fly to the bookstore and snare a copy today!

A Story with a whole lot of Bite!

I love a good Vampire tale, but more often than not these days our vamp Heroes are portrayed as brooding, love sick weaklings that shy away from blood.

Shade of Devil Takes a departure from that new stereotype and introduces Sorin the First Vampire. He is unapologetically a vampire. He loves blood, he loves himself and he loves is enemy's head on a spike

The book takes you to a world were Sorin is wakes up 500 after he was put into a healing sleep and has to adapt to to a whole new world.

The book is witty and some times laugh out loud Funny. Shayne introduces a host of new characters in such a skillful way that you instantly form attachments. He weaves his tale beautifully into a tapestry of emotions. Sadness, betrayal, loss, anger, lust, friendship humour and hope. I felt it all and it left me excited to see where this new Adventure and it's great characters will take me next!

Dracula Who? Never heard of her...

Shayne Silvers has defied the odds and stepped out of his wildly popular and addictive Templeverse to bring us a fresh take on an old favorite--and has exceeded all expectations once again. Get ready to meet your new favorite vampire! Move over Lost Boys, Edward Cullen, Bill, and even Dracula...Sorin is in the castle! After an unplanned 500 year nap, Sorin wakes to betrayal and confusion as he must navigate the modern world in order to exact revenge against the protege who tried to slaughter him and his entire family. As Sorin acclimates to 2019 New York, he accumulates some most interesting allies--ones that his sworn enemy, and you, the reader, will NEVER see coming! Sit back and forget everything you thought you knew about vampires, because there's a new caped crusader in town, and he's taking no prisoners!

A Great New Series!!

What would you do after waking up from a 500 year sleep?  In modern day New York, and you were a vampire?  Not just a vampire, but the FIRST vampire, and Dracula had diligently worked to remove all trace of you from the world?  Please enter Shayne Silver’s new world, and be amazed, entertained, and maybe held captive for a while.  This book is a must ready, its fast-moving, entertaining, funny…too many to list.  It’s a true winner.  I loved it and want more!!!!

Think you have heard it all about Vampires? Guess again. This is a brand new view into the life of a Vampire. Along for the ride are a Werewolf and a Warlock. Add in a mixture of a Native American Shaman, descendant of The Van Helsing, and a pack of Werewolves. The background is New York City. The time frame is 1400 to 2019. This is just the beginning, because there are two more episodes. I wish the whole series were available right now. This is the perfect time of the year for a wild ride. Enjoy!!!

You always thought Dracula was the first vampire. You thought wrong, and that's just the way Sorin wants it. Welcome to a newly visioned world, that takes the vampire lore you thought you knew, and twists it just a bit. This new series by Shayne Silvers is full of the twists, turns quips and quotes that you expect. It is a different ride, but it feels like a familiar friend. Definitely leaves you interested in the next one.

Started out with an interesting idea and then gradually gets worse. It's kind the author didn't have faith in his concept or enough creativity to execute it. Instead he brings in every movie monster he can, rewrites their stories and characters, and then lays the groundwork for a harem. Once I realized it wasn't getting better, then I started to notice the poor writing (repeating things already told to the audience, inconsistency on how to write the centuries old vampire).

Another great story by Shayne Silvers. Its said that history is written by the victors. Dracula is gonna regret trying to write the world’s first vampire, Sorin Ambrogio, out of the history books. Sorin wakes in the modern day to ensure Dracula regrets failing to kill Sorin and ensure good manners are used while doing it

Not the usual vampire story.... a truly unique take!!

Another fantastic read! This new series starts off pulling at heartstrings, gets into the nitty gritty of survival, provides plenty of comedic relief, and leaves you grabbing for more! I am thrilled with the main character Sorin, and can’t wait to see where this series takes us! Love it!!

The worlds first vampire, Soren, had tired of the blood and death in Europe. Hastening to the new world with his 2 friends, he leaves his empire to his first turned child, Dracula. No good deed goes unpunished. New series. Lots of action, vampire gore, werewolves, and tomahawks. Good read. Buy it.

Sorin is Shayne Silver's best creation yet. Leave it to him to flip the legends upside down. If you are on the fence because it's a "vampire" book, don't wait. You will love this story.
