This little devotional is full of beautiful images, quotes, and Scripture that is fitting for our times in isolation, but are wonderful prayers for any time. Topics covered include God's Presense, Waiting on God, Peace, to name a few. Prayers are Scripture based, heartfelt, and a perfect length to call out to God without feeling overly wordy or drawn on. A great little book of prayers to add to ones collection.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected many people in many different ways. Holly Dickson-Ramos has responded to the challenge of these times by writing this thirty-day devotional. She began setting down these prayers for her own use, but has now shared them with a wider audience.

Putting me in mind of John Baillie’s 1936 book, A Diary of Private Prayer, and also of Celtic litany, the prayers are heartfelt, unpretentious, simple without being simplistic, and at times poetical. They are redolent of the Psalms, which themselves have been prayed by Christians for millennia. I found myself being inspired and blessed by Dickson-Ramos’ prayers, so apropos for today. Like Dickson-Ramos herself, I often find myself at a loss for words; prayers written by another person fill in the lacunae of my own expressive inability. More than that, they bring me into contact with other believers both now and across the centuries.

Calling Out is attractively presented with colour photographs. Its slender size belies the riches within. Although written for the Covid-19 pandemic, it would be of benefit to those suffering isolation from other reasons – ill health, injury, disability, social phobias, etc. The prayers are suitable for any Christian tradition.

Although I read them fairly rapidly for writing this review, and not over thirty days, I shall now go back and use them as intended. They are well worth reading, re-reading, and especially, praying.

I've read Holly's devotional book "Calling Out" word for word. Love it!
It's very calming, strengthening, and helps one to look deep within. Well written with lovely photos and other literary input. Very real and timely for today. A great gift for those who are hurting and in need of encouragement during this time. Thank you, Holly

A word about myself. I have moved from evangelical to Episcopalian. As an evangelical my prayers with the exception of the Lord’s Prayer were primarily spontaneous. Now my prayer books are dog-eared. I mention this because Holly Dickson-Ramos brings both together beautifully. This volume of prepared prayers flows from her heart. They are composed with the form and feel of ancient communal prayers and yet, convey her grasp of the present and circumstances common to us here and now. Each of the 30 prayers (one per day) were long enough to carry me on a short journey yet not so long as to dissuade me from taking the time to pick up the book. I find many who write such books of prayer become repetitive in theme but not so here. Each day brings a fresh perspective, true insights, and somehow pricks some part of me that causes me to stop and re-read so as to assure the Lord that these words are indeed indicative of me too. A very timely volume of daily prayers I highly recommend.

A free copy of this book was provided to me by the author. Review is sincere and authentic.

The little book that waters the soul. Every prayer is written with love, hope filled and is excellent wither or not one is in isolation.
