Louie Thorne understands this. When her parents were brutally shot dead in their home, Louie found the strength to go on only by armoring herself with the quest for vengeance. She found the criminals that took everything from her--and ended their lives--despite what it cost her.

So when fellow huntress Diana Dennard crosses Louie's path, in pursuit of a dangerous pedophile, Louie refuses to interfere. She understands the need governing Diana's every move--even if the woman's methods toe the line of madness.

As Lou is dragged into Diana's hunt, Diana's mask slips. The game turns dark. Suddenly the bad guys aren't Diana's only target and Lou finds herself between a dangerous and conniving psychopath and the ones she loves.

Will Louie's dark power be enough to protect them? Or will the coldest heart win...

Another sleepless night. Totally worth it. This book was a little darker than past ones in the series (about sex trafficking children, so of course). But who better to take care of the creepiest of the creeps than Lou Thorne? Then there's the action and awesome characters I've grown so attached to in this series. The romance between Lou and Konstantine is really beginning to develop too, and I love it! I hope there are a hundred more Lou books in the works. I can't get enough. <3

Devil's Luck is the fifth book in the Shadows in the Water series by my new favourite author, Kory M. Shrum. I have come to the conclusion that Bookbub has a lot to answer for, on one hand it is a fantastic way to ‘find’ new books/authors to read- but on the other hand I end up spending my entire yearly book budget in a matter of a few months lol. But if it weren’t for Bookbub, I would never have found Ms. Shrum’s books, which would have been a real tragedy, because she really knows how to weave a riveting tale.
This is an awesome urban fantasy with so much going on- in a fantastic way. With plenty of action, adventure, mystery, danger, a different realm aspect, suspense, tension, intrigue, drama, the mafia, serial killers, agendas, ‘hunting’, team work, friendship, family, investigation, time factors, gripping scenes, intense developments, twists, romance, and so, so, so much more- you really need to read it to fully appreciate this gem of a series as I doubt my words can really do this series the justice that it deserves.
Louie Thorne is the daughter of assassinated DEA agent, Jack Thorne. He, along with her mother, were murdered by a drug cartel when she was just a young child- his death scarred her, in more ways than one. She has bided her time honing her skills, becoming a force to be reckoned with- one so powerful that the ‘bad guys’ will never see her coming. In the process of wreaking revenge, she builds a terrifying reputation that will strike fear into the hearts of her enemies- and it’s her secret ‘ability’ that gives her the upper hand- and gives this whole series a completely unique and addictive quality. So much action. With a lot of violence. And a huge helping of adventure. Resulting in a serious book addiction- while also set this book/series apart from others, and this is a book ‘high’ that will be hard to beat.
I developed this addiction to Ms. Shrum’s stories when I stumbled on the Shadows in the Water series -> picking up one book, which then led to two, which then had me devouring the whole series, back-to-back (11 books) in a matter of days. Now I am on tenterhooks, excitedly anticipating the release of Book #12, which can’t come quickly enough for my liking lol.
Each book in this series follows on from the previous one – with each instalment having its own ‘story’, but also adding to what has come before, thereby building a much bigger picture along the way- so the series really needs to be read in the correct sequence, to fully appreciate it- and prevent any kind of confusion. The books are available individually if you wish, as well as in Boxed Sets- which, again, is really great value for money.
The Series consists of:
-Shadows in the Water (Book #1)
-Under the Bones (Book #2)
-Danse Macabre (Book #3)
-Carnival (Book #4)
-Devil’s Luck (Book #5)
-What Comes Around (Book #6)
-Overkill (Book #7)
-Silver Bullet (Book #8)
-Hell House (Book #9)
-One Foot in the Grave (Book #10)
-Blood Rain (Book #11)
-First Light (Book #12 -> coming soon)
If you love highly original urban fantasies with plenty of action and adventure- then this is definitely a series you will want to sink your teeth into- but be prepared to develop a (Kory M.) Shrum addiction!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Kory M. Shrum!

This was the first book in this series that wasn't available on Audible, so I ended up reading this one. This is the last book in the series so far, but hopefully there will be more coming.

FINALLY, we see some action between Lou and Konstantine (yay!) and it seems like Lou is finally beginning to understand what it feels like to have people in her life that care for her and that she cares for. I will admit that the big bad in this story was really bad. The problem was that for some reason, Lou seemed to have blinders on when it came to the person who was the biggest threat to her and those that she cares about. The storyline and the world that it is in has been so well developed so far that it is so very easy to just step into this world and become a part of the story. The characters are so real, that it is a piece of cake to understand each and every person in Lou's close circle. We have been through the ringer with all of them and I felt just as protective of them as she did. Thankfully, Konstantine's patience has paid off. If there is one thing about this series that has bothered me - well, bothered might be a bit harsh- but at this moment, I can't think of a better word - so, if something bothered me it was that Konstantine put up with much more from Lou than I thought he deserved. My gosh, the man was a saint. In patience, that is. So, if he wasn't going to get some reaction from her, I was ready to throw in the towel. Luckily, we saw some movement along that front, and while we still have no idea what is going to happen, I feel better about the direction it is going.

The story line in this book continues with the newer direction of Lou's life but it is different in that she is becoming a part of a group. Also, the group is starting to realize that they have a responsibility to do their part - to pull their weight as well - because Lou may be talented, but she is not immortal.

All in all, this was another great addition to a series that I have truly enjoyed.

Devil's Luck - a review by Rosemary Kenny

The enigmatic entity Lou Thorne, a paranormal vigilante with a very unusual set of sidekicks - both human and not - returns once more, in Book 5 of the outstanding Kory M. Shrum's Shadows in the Water series, the aptly-named Devil's Luck.

This fantastic tale reveals many unexpected and sometimes attractive facts, about our most thrilling anti-heroine, including her relationships with Konstantine, Mel, Paige, the PTSD-scarred Dani, Olivia and more, plus a glimpse of Lou's raison d'etre, in both the worlds she inhabits.
Yes, surprisingly, Lou is actually human, though enhanced with a special talent, that sees her called both devil or angel, by those who benefit from, or are overwhelmed by its frequently malign power.

New girl on the block Diana Dennard, is likewise a vigilante, although limited to waging war on her enemies, albeit using her tech skills to embezzle the cash she needs to find her mercenaries and covert lifestyle.

She and sister Blaine initially reach out to Lou via the office of King's detective agency, with a new case that Diana believes will give her closure on the subject of the hatred she's kept in her heart, boiling like acid within it.

So atmospheric and mesmerising is Devil's Luck, by the spectacular Kory M. Shrum, that you won't give your Covid-19 fears a second's thought, or succumb to the Lockdown Blues...instead, you'll concentrate and keep one eye on the dark shadows nearby and the other, subconsciously in your inner mind, on Jabbers, as she waits patiently on the shore of an alien lake!

Devil's Luck is the fifth book in author Kory Shrum's Lou Thorne series. Before, we watched as she wreaked vengeance on those who did her horrific harm. She was able to pull back just as it seemed about to consumer her. Now, though, she must put that behind her. To see if there's life after blood.

Devil's Luck opens with Lou injured and still recovering from a bullet wound - friendly fire that refuses to heal. Her passion dictates that she hunt and serve justice against the worst of humans. Each attempt, though, ends in terrible pain and greater injury.

Then, while hurt and sorely limited, Lou is identified and approached by the mysterious Diane. Her offer: funding, manpower and information in exchange for Lou's assistance in taking out those same human dregs. Lou's decision will affect everyone around her. And Diane is not one to take "no" for an answer.

This book is Kory Shrum's finest novel yet - and that's saying a great deal. Beautifully written, she takes you effortlessly through incredible landscapes (and violent action) while exploring the deep question of healing from impossible wounds.

I should note that while I received an advance copy for critique and review, I enjoyed it enough to buy the finished book when it released. It's that good.

As is the case with most series, this book will be most enjoyable and understandable if you read Books 1-4 first. Then you will understand the relationships among the main characters and how they got to the present moment shortly after Book Four's ending. You'll also know the checkered past between Lou and Konstantine, the frightening experience that led to Dani's PTSD, some background on La Loon, how King became one of the best PIs in NOLA, and how the relationship among Dani, Piper and Lou developed. Although the book can be read as standalone, it would not be as enjoyable. This book has much more tension between the many violent and passionate moments, and also more emotional content than previous books. The writing is clear and straightforward and the storyline is engaging. The last chapters are hard to stop reading until you reach the thrilling conclusion.

The quest for closure is something that Lou understands but she has also learned that the kill that is supposed to finally grant peace still leaves you feeling both hollow and haunted. It's a feeling that Lou knows that fellow vigilante, Diana Dennard, will experience soon enough. So when Dennard asks Lou for help in finding a pedophile named Winter, she refuses.

Lou also doesn't understand why her friends, especially Piper, are practically begging her to kill Dennard. She doesn't see the near madness that will drive Dennard to do whatever she feels is necessary to get Lou's help. And that includes capturing and hurting her small circle of friends.

This is another excellent book in the Lou Thorne supernatural thriller series. I highly recommend you check it out!

BEST OF THE SERIES SO FAR.
Lou is still healing from a bullet wound that even though it just crazed her is taking along time to heal, strange considering she normally heals fast.
This makes it hard to deal with the things she has to,but with the help of Piper and others she manages although in pain.
She gets an offer ,that if she does some jobs she will get finance, support, extra hands and access to information.
She can do this by using her special powers but will she go to far or stop in time before she goes to far,you will have to read on to find out....
This book is exciting and full of great characters definitely not a book to be missed.

A fabulous series, this is the 5th, possibly the best yet, and I still can’t get enough of Lou Thorne - a shape shifting paranormal vigilante who fights evil and rescues the innocent.

We learn more about her and her relationships with her unlikely band of supporters. Is she becoming more human? She is injured at the start, and unusually for her, is taking a long time to recover. Her relationship with Konstantine is perhaps another clue.

The story is, as ever, fast paced and torturous, with treachery and deceit stirred into the cauldron - and is simply unputdownable!

An outline of the storyline is given elsewhere, so won’t repeat it here.

An even deeper dive, and view, into Lou Thorne. Met with a potential kindred spirit, Lou is forced to reflect on herself and the people around her, instead of just the hunt.

In this fifth book in the Shadows in the Water series, Lou is contacted by another woman who hunts the worst of the worst. They met briefly before, but now Dianna wants to enlist Lou to help with her own hunt. Lou won't get in her way, understanding the drive to right a wrong done to her, but at what cost will this decision be?

Another page turning in the series, leaving me longing for book six!

I was a tad concerned when I read Kory's warning but she wrote those sections with the utmost care and sensibility.
I am loving how Lou's character is beginning to realise that it is fine to have friends and people that you care about. It isn't a weakness. It is a strength.
Lou was willing to help Dianne stop a paedophile, even though her team didn't trust her. Lou had never killed a woman and she wasn't sure that she could. That changed when Dianne did something that Lou found unforgivable.

I love the Louie Thorn books. They are dark but oh so entertaining! Each story shows the characters evolving and growing. True to life, Louie and the team learns we can't be all and do all for those we love. Shrum keeps the suspense of the book rolling and her characters jumping. The visit to La Loon was intriguing and I hope there will be more visits all long the way. Can't wait for the next book.
I received an ARC of this book and wished to leave a review.

What another great read 😍

I have now read all the Lou Thorne books and have rated all of them 5 🌟. Not sure if I just read it really fast or if it's a shorter book this time but gutted it has come to an end so soon. Was unsure when I read the warning at the beginning of the book but thankfully the story didn't go into to much details. That is not what I call an entertaining read and I'm glad that it was done sensitively. Looking forward already to the next instalment.

The best yet and what a trip to that place

This has to be the best of the bunch so far. I really loved the trip to La Loon and to hear more about this special place. Lou's relationships with her friends really shone through in this book. They are all vulnerable but I hope not too much so......I hope the next book sees Dani on the mend. Let us hope it won't be too long in arriving

Lou and crew - fascinating

Wherever Ms Shrum takes me in her Lou Thorne stories I follow. I trust whatever feels scary or dangerous or hurtful will intentionally and logically and satisfactorily conclude in the best way. I have to remind myself all the above as I jump and shudder and walk around my house trying to shake off my anxiousness for these characters. Obviously, I absorb these stories and really enjoy the them. Must be the fine writing.

Oh, wow. This was just such an exceptional book. I have always loved the Lou Thorne series but this book was above and beyond. I really enjoyed seeing Lou as she struggled with her humanity and being faced with the empty darkness that she could have become. I love that we got to find out more about La Loon. I just absolutely loved reading this book so much.

Another Masterpiece

Once again Kory grabbed me with her cast of characters. This team of six are each so different but she has blended them together. You want to know more about each character and the bonds they share. Once I started reading Devil's Luck I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Another incredible read; can't wait for the next.

The author, Kory Shrum, does it again. She puts you right inside the book with Louie, Piper, Dani, King and Mel. Let's not forget Konstantine the king of corruption while Louie does just the opposite without any remorse. A big "thank you" to Kory for another fantastic read. Look forward to your next good read.

I love Shrum's Lou Thorne series! I'm a fan of strong female characters, and there are great ones in this series. I love the interweaving of darkness and light in the struggle of the characters-- and the world-- to find justice and to figure out what it means to be human- and what it means to be connected to others.

Fantastic series!

I found this book by chance, and am so glad I did! The characters are fleshed out and each is interesting. The main character is scary cool. Love to see this adapted into a movie or graphic novel. Looking forward to the next one. Meanwhile I'm going to check out all the other books this author wrote. Highly recommended!

Devil's Luck was another good read. Just like the other books In the Shadows in the Water series the author keeps you wanting more. This book had just the right amount of suspense and action to keep the reader turning the pages. This book also brings to light a real world issue. Can't wait to read the next Lou Thorne adventure.

Devil's luck

Lou may have finally met her match. For her badassery the main character shows her naive softer side which leaves her open to bad people. I am going to live in hope that Kory M. Shrum will write more of this series please!

I read it in one go!

I love Kory's characters and stories - they evolve and learn, and the plots are original and yet true to life.

I don't like what Lou does, but I like that she is being challenged and grows through her experiences. An interesting read.

I love Kory Shrum's books. They are creative, well written and engaging. Kory's characters are well thought out, and bring each book to life. I am always sad to finish and say goodbye to one of Kory's books. You will not be disappointed in any of the stories that she writes.

Another excellent Lou Thorne mystery.
The series goes from strength to strength, and the characters grow in depth.
The subject matter here is dark, as the author warns readers in advance.
Despite these grim aspects, I enjoyed reading the book.

I have enjoyed all of Kory Shrum’s books with Lou Thorne. This 5th book is about capturing pedophiles. Lou tries to save the children with Diane Dennard. Lou also starts to recognize that she has “family.” She is not alone.
