Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Ah...Finally, the story has begun going deeper and the world building is mostly done...The Tale of Hachimaru have begun and I am interested to see more of Samurai 8 but I hope mainly that Masashi Kishimoto doesn't mess up
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the free copy of this manga in exchange for an honest review. My opinion was not affected by the free copy.
I think I have to admit that this may not be the type of manga for me. I have read through Naruto so I was familiar with this author's style, but I guess I was hoping for something a little different here. I wanted them to explore bushido and what it means to be a samurai. That's done a little, but most of this manga was dedicated to characters meeting up and talking. I don't usually mind this because I love character development, but in a weird way I feel like this would be better as an anime. It would be able to stretch things out more so the characters could be more fleshed out.
I will say that the art style is still really good and the action scenes are well-done. I'd have to give this manga to people who are bigger fans of Naruto to get their perspective on this. For me, I hope the story slows down and develops the characters more. It doesn't feel like events are given enough time to sink in before the next thing happens. Also, I want to see the sci-fi elements brought in a lot more. There are cyborgs and robots, but they might as well not exist for all that they matter in the world and story right now.
I still liked this volume well enough, though mostly for the art style and the moments where emotion was allowed to shine through. I will still keep checking in out of curiosity, but so far I'd say that this manga isn't really for me.
My frustration with the first volume made me hesitant to pick up this book, but I had a galley so I thought I might as well read it. This book is considerably better to get through compared to the first, because, while still quite expository, things finally becomes clear. The princess-samurai thing is explained (though I still don't get the 'boyfriend' thing, while I DO get the younger girls swooning over the warriors thing) and the stakes of the story are properly established, as is the prophecy of the key samurai and Hachimaru's whole role in this story. It finally has me interested in it as a plot, and I think I might continue. Ann and Hachimaru meeting and the relationship established between them gives me hope for something other than an insta-love story, and I would like to see how they go from there. The artwork, though, remains irredeemable in my eyes, with its lack of clarity in objects and figures.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
This volume was even better than the first. We finally have the set up for this story and it really started with a bang. This volume never stopped with the action and the character development. I’m amazed how much we were able to learn in this volume alone and the pace never felt rushed. I’m really getting to love all our characters and can’t wait to see what will happen to them next. I look forward to the next volume when it comes out.
I really do enjoy Samurai 8, the aesthetic is top notch and I’m gradually understanding the actions taking place on the pages. A lot of the content from this volume has been talking, which I’m half putting down to the intense pacing necessary to wrap up a story in 5 Volumes especially when it’s a real intricate sci-fi meets samurai storyline.
ARC Copy...although i still can't over the fact the protagonist looks and acts like Naruto in many ways however I did like the world expansion (a not-lady like princess...love it!) and this is one awesome space opera-Edo world indeed with very lavish visuals!
The story is picking up a little bit and the lead is starting to take things seriously. The art is just as stellar as the first volume, especially the backgrounds. The home planet has a great alien-yet-paradise aesthetic and I can’t wait to explore other worlds.
Ich bin wirklich gespannt, was gerade ihn so einzigartig macht.
It's still magic cyborg samurai in space... but this volume was a lot easier to follow. A lot more stuff was explained slowly and with pictures, not just a lot of names tossed around like we're supposed to know who these people are.
Anyway, Hachimaru's existence has been noticed by bad guys way off in space. They send a samurai called Ata to kill him (because reasons that I will not spoil). Meanwhile, Hachimaru is struggling to even get his sword and armor to work properly. But he meets Ann (his princess ♥) and they don't mesh right away, but it's adorable~
Then everything goes horribly wrong and the moon gets split in half. Crazy...
