Hi, all! I’m back…er, I mean, we’re back and boy do we have a tale to tell!
Now that Win is up and about, he’s been a very busy bee. He’s jumped in with both feet, getting involved in our community and living his best life now that he’s unencumbered by his spy past. He even joined the Ebenezer Falls garden club and made all the female member’s toes curl with his British charm.
On a flower scouting trip for the garden club’s annual spring planting in the town square, while Win is ogling lavender bushes and pansies, I fall head first into a pile of soil where a body’s buried.
Not just any body either. It’s the body of the husband of a close acquaintance of mine—a close acquaintance who just happens to own the nursery and the pile of dirt I fall into head first.
When he begs me to investigate, there’s no way I’m going to turn him down, but there are obstacles to overcome.
For instance, the love of my life. My International Man of Mystery, who keeps stepping on my investigative toes. It’s proving to be an adjustment solving a mystery with us working in the same space. Add in Dana, who’s gone ‘round the bend, my sudden and unexplained investigative (not to mention ridiculous) possessiveness and everything’s all topsy-turvy.
But there’s a vicious killer on the loose and as we unravel whodunnit, I’m hoping our relationship doesn’t unravel, too…

A trip to the landscapers ends up to the discovery of a body and a friend asking for help in solving the murder of their spouse. But Stevie is struggling with dare I say jealousy? It seems now that Win is corporeal, Stevie is having a tough time dealing with her crime solving partner. Win is forming friendships and becoming active in their community.
I went back and forth between understanding Stevie and wanting to tell her to grow up and be happy. Drama aside, it was delightful to see Win and Stevie working side by side on a murder case. I just wish we saw a little more development in their romantic development.
The thread with Dana and the confession was a good one. Poor Dana.
An intriguing case, humor and friends added to the tale. While each audiobook deals with a fresh case, overall ARC development and character relationships demand that this series be read in the order of its release.
Spend time with Stevie and Win if you looking for a light, humorous paranormal cozy. Hollie Jackson is delightful as the narrator. She has created unique voices for each character, and her pacing and tone enhance the overall story. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Another great addition to one of my favorite series. If you haven’t checked out the audio version, I highly, HIGHLY recommend it. Absolutely fantastic!
This one was a doozy. Stevie is dealing with jealousy, Dana is still avoiding her but buddying up to Win and she has to solve the murder of a friend’s husband. The killer was quite a reveal in this one 😳😳
Another fun installment - back to a straight up murder mystery, except this time Stevie and Win must work together in person.
Only weird bit was the author referring to a man being gay as having an "alternative lifestyle" more than once. I got the sense she wasn't trying to be offensive (she makes a point to have her characters stand up against misogyny and bigotry), but that phrasing needs an update imo.
This would have been a 4 star review if not for the use of the language gay "lifestyle" not to mention "lifestyle choice." Offensive and disappointing.
3.5 stars Another fun cozy! I was excited to have Win and Stevie together finally, without Win's past to muck things up. So I was a bit frustrated by Stevie's reactions to Win. Honestly though, it was a smart way to write this book as it would be really unrealistic to think Stevie and Win would be able to go from his being a ghost to his being in her life in a very REAL way without any growing pains. And I do like the way they worked through it.
The mystery was a decent one, though a little on the sadder side than most. There was still a decent bit of humor though, especially surrounding how they decided to handle Dana having seen Win in that hilarious mystery when Stevie was in Limbo thanks to a spell gone awry. I think this will create an interesting new angle in future books, which I'm excited to see.
I continue to love Hollie Jackson's narration - she really brings all the characters to life and their personalities shine through in her performance. A great listen, even at my standard 2x speed.
Who said life would be easy once your boyfriend raises from the dead?
Stevie is feeling a bit jealous in this latest story. Win and Arkady were always the voices in her head helping her solve murders. Their experiences as spies has been invaluable in keeping Stevie alive when those various murderers have tried to kill her.
But when one of her friends has been found murdered and his husband is begging for Stevie's help in finding the killer, she is reluctant to help. She isn't certain she knows what is holding her back but Win gets her to agree to investigate. Problem is her beloved Spy guy is no longer just the voice of experience whispering in her ear. He is standing beside her, and he is taking over and she can't complete with his years of spy training. The thrill of the chase used to make Stevie so excited, but that thrill isn't as much fun, if you are simply lagging behind someone else's chase.
But how do you tell the love of your life that while it is a dream come true to have them in your life, their sudden existence doesn't always make you happy?
I was torn between feeling bad for Stevie or annoyed at her attitude. Everyone called her on her jealousy so they knew what her problem was but she had a hard time dropping the funk over Win taking over her investigations. Actually, now that I think more on it, Stevie's attitude since Win has been embodied has been pretty poor. In Book 9, Stevie disappears after going on a shopping trip which she takes because she was annoyed by demanding Win was being. She wanted him on the earthly plain but found living with him was a lot harder than she expected.
Win and Stevie also took a chance to told their whole story to Stevie's friend Detective Dana, who then passed out and pretended he never heard anything and avoided Stevie for most of the story, but he went for a beer with Win. This only added to Stevie annoyance at her fake James Bond. He took her investigation. He took her friend.
Even though we had another near death experience for Stevie, we still aren't going anywhere on the romance front and Win has been embodied for about six months now and still living in the guest house he had built on the property. I have decided that maybe Win's brother, whose body he took over, was gay which is why Win suddenly has no sexual interest in the love of his life, or maybe they both realize that their impossible romance was more interesting than actually spending physical time with each other.
I still love this silly little series and want more. I had originally noticed that Amazon had this listed as book 11 of 11 but the series is not over. We might have gotten to the bottom of Win's death but we still have the issue of Stevie's magic and the Warlock who stole her power and wants her dead. And I think we might someday get Arkady onto this plain as well, except that would leave no one on the other side to help Stevie survive her many harrowing experiences with the living.
One thing I’d been bothered by with this series was it being overall heteronormative, so I was glad to finally see a hint of diversity introduced. I definitely cringed when being gay was called an “alternative” lifestyle (???) and while I don’t think it was an intentional slight by the author it’s still an absurd thing to say, and I am surprised nobody in the entire editing process said anything like “uh, maybe not that.” Anyway. The weirdly PG relationship between Stevie and Win bothers me (the crazy hot ghost dude you’ve been in love with for years and built a strong trusting relationship with is reincarnated in basically his same crazy hot body and you dont jump him immediately? Really?) and it stood out a lot more in the context of this book, but clearly I’ve made it this far and I do intend to keep reading these. But for the general record books like the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich do a pretty great job of not making the main characters seem weirdly abstaining and also not having the books themselves be anywhere near illicit, so it is definitely possible.
2.5*. This book is short, but should have been much shorter — the writing is so repetitive, the book feels like a constant déjà vu. It for so bad, it made me worry for the author's short term memory (I am not sure any editing or proofreading happened for this book — if it did, the author definitely didn't do their job).
The mystery is better than the previous book's though, so comparatively, this book was better, but the writing flaws are starting to grate.
The problem for the series as a whole is that I never liked Win and now that he is corporeal I like him even less. His dynamic with Arkady is also getting more annoying than helpful or fun. So it doesn't bode well for the remaining books...
Wow!!! This book definitely took us on a emotional rollercoaster but what a ride. The gang is back together for a another adventure, fill with plenty of intrigue, action, suspense, twists and turns you don't see coming, and of course laugh out loud moment. With a add bonus that this time Stevie and Win are physically together. If you haven't read the other books in the series I totally recommend that you do. If not your going to be complete lost. This book doesn't waste time with recap FYI!!! I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
4.5 Stars... Stevie and Win must learn to work together as they tackle their first murder mystery side by side... Gauging one another's strengths and weaknesses proves to be a bit of a challenge, but, as always with these two, they traverse their obstacles (sometimes stumbling along the way) with their love and commitment to one another as their compass... And dare I say, Stevie begins to show signs of her witchy ways surfacing once again... Another funny and intriguing mystery with this lovable cast of characters:)
-It actually feels like there is less chemistry between the main characters now that Winterbottom has a body. -The sexuality of the side characters was addressed in phrasing that is often considered offensive. -Some of the analytical leaps at the end were a bit of a stretch and didn't make sense. -Cementing the 1 star review was our DB going to a conference in Sandusky but they called in the Cincinnati police. That just felt lazy
While I did enjoy this book, the references to several of the characters being gay as “lifestyle choices put me off, as did some of the attitudes towards kinky behavior. I have a hard time believing that Stevie is that naive, both about the broad range of sexual behavior that humans engage in and about the kinds of things Win must have done as a spy.
And, really, Sandusky, Ohio is on the other side of the state from Cincinnati.
The mystery was well done, and the jealousy was annoying but realistic when it comes to real relationships, so it was kind of a refreshing change from the fairytale romance of previous books. But I warn anyone with an aversion to lovey dovey stuff (like me) that the mush bullet we dodged in the previous two books was only because it splattered all over this one. Still not nearly as bad as it could have been, though, so I will still call it a win. Pun not intended.
Wow!!! What a great addition to this series. Stevie,Win and Belfry finally tell Dana the truth. Poor Dana can’t take the truth and starts to ignore Stevie. What’s she gonna do? No time to worry about that, their friend Kirkland’s husband was found dead at the flower nursery they own. What helps mend a broken heart, solving a murder. The gang is all in to help a friend find the truth.
Stevie and the gang are on the hunt to find another killer. Stevie and Win are working a case, but this time it’s together in the real world. I loved how Stevie and Win has to find their common ground in their sleuthing. This is always enjoyable and has me looking forward to the next.
Slapstick comedy that is not funny, dialogue vomit, a platonic friendship that is supposed to be a romance, and last but not least, Stevie apparently resents the fact that her now corporeal “boyfriend“, can speak for himself. It’s past time for me to do this author a favor and quit reading her material.
This was one of my favorites in this series! The mystery was interesting and had a good twist. We got to see Stevie and Win work through the growing pains of solving mysteries with Win present physically. Can't wait for the next one!
Dakota’s stories just keep getting better and better. And if course, the more you read a series, the more emotionally invested you get in all the characters lives and the lives of the people around them. Thank you for another amazing story!
This was cute and short. Yes, Stevie does have to not be so 'jelly', she was pretty whiny about that. But as always, it ends well. The mystery was easy to figure out. But hey, that's the nature of the series. Like that she & Dana 'kissed' and made up.
This all about coming to terms with something that has only stayed in the shadows. Lies are let out of the closet & behaviors examined and dealt with in a believable fashion. The magic displayed is only an added bonus.
Oh Dakota Cassidy, this would have been such a good addition to this series if you didn’t continue to call the LGBTQIA relationship an “alternative lifestyle.” Not a good look and made me cringe every single time.
Another great book in the series! I just love all the characters and as soon as I finish one of Dakota's books then I want to read the next one in the series :)
