Zoe Chant loves writing paranormal romance. Over a cup of tea (or something stronger) she whips up sexy tales of hunky heroes and adventurous heroines to tantalize and satisfy her readers. Sizzling hot romance, no cliffhangers!
While series should ideally be read in order, all of Zoe’s books are standalones and can be read in any order. This includes books within series.
I like Ella, I like Callan. I loved seeing Myrtle, Hector and Ruby again. I even liked the overall story with the big evil corporation. The writing style as always made reading this really easy and it just flew by. But I was not as convinced as I could have been... I don't know what it was but something kept me from enjoying this more. Let's see what Euan's story brings, I'm curious what happened to him.
Biochemistry graduate student Ella has no idea why anyone would want to destroy her lab and ransack her house, nor why anyone would leave mysterious messages about the father who abandoned her as a child, but all of these things are happening. And when she follows the clues to find out about her father, she finds herself in the middle of a battle between undercover shapeshifter agents and an evil corporation who wants to experiment on them.
Ella is a great character -- brilliant, tough, and brave. Callen is a sexy cop who looks like a bad boy and shifts into an extinct giant wombat. The story is interesting, and the family aspects adds depth to the plot. I also love the Australian details and slang. I've never been to Australia, so I don't know how accurate it is, but it feel accurate and realistic.
Not as entertaining as book one for me. Don’t really feel the extinct species vibe works for me. I found it dragged a bit in places and the ending seemed rushed. Ella forgives her father for abandoning her as a young child way to easily. He did everything he did all for greed and the glory of research. Then supposedly dumped Ella as a way to protect her when it became abundantly clear his employer would use Ella as a tool against him. Just didn’t work for me. Loved Callan, Ella was okay. She at least had stronger morals than her father. Sorry for Euan and will read his book. Read through Kindle Unlimited.
This is the 2nd book of the Outback Shifters and follows Callan's story. Callan finds his mate, Ella on the run from some people looking for her. Once he touches her, he realizes that she is his fated mate. This was a bit of a slow burn romance as they were trying to get away from the shape-shifting men trying to get to her. Filled with action, surprises, past and future characters made for a great read. I only wished that the chemistry between them was more. I adored Ruby, and hope in the future when she is grown up she will have a story as well. Solid 4 star read****
I really liked a lot of things about this one, and definitely enjoyed a less typical alpha H. But the climax and closure just felt confusing and jumbled and rushed and overall just lost me. Dropped a star there - only 3 stars. Still liked it, still enjoyable, but weak at the end.
Ella (h) is on the run. A biochem PhD student, she has found her lab and her home wrecked. A mysterious phone call sends her running to an unknown point in the outback, with a mysterious threat on her heels. Callan (H) is part of the Agency, a sort of covert shifter law enforcement team. Ella's case is assigned to him, to find her on the run and bring her in for protection. Except when he does find her, he recognizes her as his mate, and things become a lot less straightforward.
I liked Callan. I'm not totally a fan (in general) of the extinct shifter forms, but it can be well done. And the idea of a wombat the size of a rhino is pretty entertaining. What I liked more was his personality - very chill, very laidback. The peacemaker on the team, but still very protective. His animal too - more solid, more quietly stubborn (rather than hot-headedly so). It was a refreshing change from the usual type of shifter Hs we get - more aggressive, more hot-tempered, can border on alphahole. Not that they might not have a fun story of their own, but it's still nice seeing the change of pace.
I wasn't as fond of Ella. I love a good STEM h, and I relate well to shyer, more reserved characters in general. I was doing OK with her up until things really started going crazy, and then she just seemed to fall apart - not emotionally, but as a character. For someone who was so guarded and withdrawn in regards to relationships, especially family, she didn't seem to act in character at all when it came to her father. He had been out of touch for 20 years. Twenty years! Since she was 7! And he wasn't super close to her before that! I get that blood is thicker than water and all that, but how many people that you last saw in first grade would you be willing to put your life at risk for? Especially when you learn that they've been working in R&D for a evil secret mercenary corporation? I just struggled to understand how someone so guarded would rush into danger (and put the lives of people she truly cares about at risk too) for someone they have little to no connection with. I mean, if you're 27 and you haven't talked to someone since you were 7, that's being out of each other's lives for basically 3/4 of your conscious memory!! And it wasn't just being out of touch, but feeling like you'd been abandoned and being angry and resentful toward them too! So it just confuses me that she'd rush into danger and then would forgive him so quickly.
Which was just one of the parts of the climax that I struggled with. Why she'd be rushing into danger was a huge part, but then there was the whole "oh, my gosh, it's a trap!" Seriously, evil global entity, had tortured one of their own agents to near-death in book 1, known for worldwide corruption and torture and war-mongering and general power-hungry activities...And they were expecting a straightforward and fair handover? It seriously skirted TSTL status for the Agency. While the action was well-written, and I liked Callan's battle with his diprotodon as well, the ...logic?... of the whole scene scene was shaky for me.
And there was the whole timeline of the research. Also shaky and confused me quite a bit. Don't know if I'd count these as plot holes or just a weird timeline and shaky details, but it seemed like a really weak point in the plot.
I liked Penny and Evie. Nice to see some minority/LGBTQ representation from a more mainstream romance author! This was at least the second time I've noticed it with Chant's books, and it makes me smile. Plus the idea of a griffin and a pademelon (mini wallaby) as mates was adorable.
Alternating 3rd person POV. No cheating, no OW/OM drama, no love triangles. Nice and straightforward from the romance side. Enjoyed the bit more unusual H - both animal and personality. The weakest side for me was the suspense - shaky timeline (though the premise might have worked if it wasn't over a 20 year window) and out-of-character actions from h regarding her father and the climax. Still enjoyable, but not quite as much as some of Chant's others. Not a cliffhanger, but HFN for the leads (no real epilogue) and hints dropped about Euan's story coming up. Plus Hargreaves hasn't been taken down yet, so the Big Bad is still out there.
Would I read more? Of course. I like Zoe Chant - she's one of my go-to SPN romance authors. And for this particular series of her, I'm enjoying the more unusual shift forms and the setting Down Under. And Euan's story looks promising - the whole shifter losing his ability offers up some good story potential. So yes, even though this had its significant weaknesses, it won't stop me from reading more by the author or in this series.
Ella Woodson, a biochemist whose world was turend upside down one day when she arrived at the lab she shared with four other biochem PhD students, to find the police there taping off the entrance. She needed answers despite her not liking police, she held her own when she came face-to-face with the damage.
Turned that only her work was destroyed, she was clueless as to why someone would want to stop her from conducting her research. Her house too was vandalized, at that point she knew she was in peril. Then she received a call that send her into hiding from the evildoers. She was under the impression that her father hated her when in reality, he sent her away to Australia to protect her.
Callan McKenna, a diprotodon shifter and a member of a secret supernatural secretive organization who specialized in handling criminals that the human law enforcements couldn't handle. He was assigned by his boss to look for Ella Woodson, who'd gone missing after the events that rocked her world. Her father was Dr. Henry Woodson, head of science and research at Hargreaves Inc.
Hargreaves was a company that put up a front as being a private security agency when in reality the company had some of the most ruthless and dangerous people woring for them. One of their operatives went after one of Callan's colleagues, Hector Richardson and his mate whom we've met in the orevious book, HECTOR.
Callan set out to look for Ella and found her, she told him about the call she received, he had a feeling that it could be a trap so they make a compromise. He qouldgo with her and in return she would go back to Canberra with him when she got her answers. But things didn't go as planned since the evildoers attacked them.
She was his mate, he told her all about his inner animal but she fell asleep. Even though she thought what he'd said the night begore was all a dream. In the end she took what he said to heart and learn more about him, his teammates and the supernatural world.
It was geat to see Hector, Myrtle and Ruby again but it was also a treat to meet Hector's sister and her bettet half. Meeting more of Callan's teammates, Euan and Trent who were total opposites. Once again Ella found herself in danger after she received anoter life changing phone call.
Hargreaves was more dangerous tan the Agency thought, loved seeing how Ella, Callan and his colleagues handle themselves in te face of danger. The enemies got what was coming to them. And the newly mates got their HEA.
CALLAN is the second book in Zoe Chant's OUTBACK SHIFTERS series. It was fast-paced, humorous and heartwarming. Zoe Chant did an incredible job. Two thumbs up!
****I received a free copy from the author, without any obligation to review.****
‘Callan’ which is the second story in the ‘Outback Shifters’ series can only be described as intense from the very start as Ella’s work, lab, home, and perhaps her life is being destroyed by unknown enemies. She’s reacting on instincts now and following directions that make no sense but it’s the only clue she has as to what is happening to her or why. She never expected what she was about to step into.
We first met Callan in ‘Hector’, and I actually loved his interaction with one adorable baby shifter, Ruby. Now it’s Callan’s turn to find his mate in the most unexpected way. Chasing down clues, fighting an enemy that is proving itself totally unexpected, and discovering the woman’s he’s set out to find is, in fact, his mate – certainly not another day out in the field for Callan. Keeping his mate safe and protected is his first priority – that and trying to explain exactly what he is without Ella running as fast as she can in the opposite direction. She’s been through a lot in the last day, discovering she’s the mate to a shifter, let alone an extinct shifter animal, is a lot to ask of any human.
The action is fast-paced, the villains vile, and the mystery deepens in this story. We’ll run into Hector, Myrtle, and Ruby once again as well as getting to know the rest of Callan’s team a bit better. I was easily caught up in this story, the lies, the danger, the outcome kept me glued to my Kindle. I’m definitely looking forward to Euan’s story knowing what we learned about him now. If you love a good shifter tale, then you’ll want to check out ‘Callan’ as soon as possible.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Callan and Ella - love and danger - a perfect combination
I love Zoe Chant books and this one is no exception. All of the shifters she creates are loyal, upstanding, loving, all around good people who generally want to make the world a better place. This series has a bit of mystery and light danger. Like the first book in the series, Hargreaves plays a prominent role of being an evil corporation using shifters for nefarious purposes. Callan is a shifter whose animal is extinct. He works for the Agency which polices shifters and is always against Hargreaves. Ella is a PhD candidate in biochemistry. When her lab and home are broken into and trashed, she follows the directions of an unknown caller who directs her to coordinates in the middle of the Australian wilderness. The Agency assigns Callan to find and protect Ella. Callan realizes Ella is his mate when he first meets her but there is much to overcome before he can share that with her. The book is fairly low angst and has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, a bit of steam, a small amount of dangerous action, family drama, painful pasts, love, and even some chuckles. There is definite growth by both of the main characters. Experiencing the journey of Callan and Ella as they fall in love and work through their individual issues to get to their HEA gave me all the feels - you will definitely laugh, cry, swoon, and happy sigh.
I enjoyed this instalment of the Outback shifters series more than Book 1 (and Book 1 was quite a step up from the Veteran Shifters series by Zoe Chant that I'd read previously). In this one, there was not just a plot, but an actual series arc in evidence.
Plus, I really liked that Ella was so freaking smart, with something vaguely resembling a complex backstory, and that her research appears to have been plot-relevant.
Also, I'm not quite sure if Callan was First Nations Australian - he's described as having 'brown skin' and 'dark brown eyes', and his shifter form is an extinct Australian megafauna species, so it's not beyond the realm of probability. If so, that's some nice representation that I don't think I've ever seen in a shifter romance book before.
(Although, if that was the intention, it would have been awesome to have had it explicitly acknowledged and perhaps to have had whatever his experience of life was up to this point with whatever his cultural identity might have been. As it was, we don't really get any kind of sense of him as anything but a White Australian who happens to have more melanin than Hector... so it's not clear whether that's actually what the writer was intending.)
Ella is a woman who is in a program trying to earn her PHD. She goes to her lab one morning and is surprised to see police there with her lab blocked off. She finds out her work has been destroyed. She goes home and finds out her home has been destroyed. She gets a call that tells her to go to certain coordinates to find something important. Callan is a diprotodon shifter and is part of a shifter cop group. He is sent to find Ella. He is told to protect her. When he sees Ella he realizes she is his mate. Ella has spent her life trying to avoid any attention on herself. After meeting Callan, Ella falls in love and can't figure out how she can feel so much love in such a short time. Callan and his team help to save Ella's dad and put a stop to some bad research he is responsible for creating which can hurt shifters. Ella and Callan are so perfect together. Their love is so deep. This is definitely a series everyone should read.
Another trip to the Australian Outback, this time with Callan. When Ella's life starts falling apart and it becomes clear she needs help, Callan step up to do his part, but as they spend time together and start looking into her past for the answers they need in their future. In the process they discover a great conspiracy and a group of really bad guys that must be stopped.
It's a great sequel in the Outback shifter's series, and another great couple. I liked that we get to see different and original shifters, even getting some extinct animals in the mix, and not only the ones we all know, we get to know a little more about the Australian megafauna, and I really found it refreshing to see something different and original, not to mention that the book is full of conspiracies and action, and the bad guys are kind of crazy.
Ella and Callan Unshifting Tryst! 4.7***** Spoiler !
Ella Woodson, PhD graduate attaining her degree in Biochemistry, when her father 's past dealings with Hargreaves Inc/ Black Water wannabe, crashed her research and her home sending her on the run, straight into Callan's protective, megafauna arms. Together they evaded, and escaped two bi-shifters ampped up on shifting serum and with Hector's and the Agency gang's help they walked into a trap, and survived to tease each other later. Her father tried to make amends, however his solution left Ella with abandonment issues, that resolved once Callan and her mate bond solidified. A HEA both academically and romantically for Ella.
Great plot and characters with a persistent theme of money is the root of all evil as the poor female waif/protag survived the greedy Hargreaves Inc claws by meeting her shifter mate. A Must-Read for paranormal romance readers. Can't wait to read about Trent mate bonding tryst, and Ruby's first shift!!

Ratings (out of possible 5) Character building: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ World building: 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 I was so happy to read something more authentic about Australia than in other books. I am collecting a wonderful hodgepodge of words that are so priceless!! I can't wait to use them in future stories! Like "juddered"! Beautiful! And it isn't the usual "Right, Mate!" That would have turned me off immediately. I can't wait to read the rest in this series!!
Relationship building: 💓 💓 💓 💓 💓 Romance: 💋 💋 💋💋 Heat/steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Drama: 👀 👀 👀 Action: 🍿 🍿 🍿 🍿 Suspense: 💣💣💣 Dark: 💀💀💀 Triggers: Stalking, parental abandonment, theft, project damage. POV: 2 Ending: Not rushed, pleasant. Length: 300 pages Recommend: Yes, I would. And while we're at it, I'd get the entire series!! It is definitely worth it.
A PhD student and staff, Elle, shows up at the lab a little late to see police car lights and the lab blocked due to a break in and damage. Of the five students using the lab, only Elle's station and equipment has been damaged. After taking to the detective, she goes home to find her apartment door open and yep, the place is destroyed. She gets a blocked phone call telling her to go to this spot X in the outback. So, she goes. Meanwhile, the Agency has a meeting and her case comes up. Why, she not a shifter? No, but her dad is a genius who works for Hargreaves. Callan is assigned, and after a lucky break, meets up and makes a deal with her. Then everything goes down the toilet. Excellent read, can't wait for Euan.
Greed is hard 2 maintain between ur morals of what's right and wrong. Even though her dad decided on what he should do, he regrets how a lot of things happen in his life and hers. Callan is a peace maker in a lot of situations. But a few things changed when they met and time 2 protect and help any way possible. Those 2 assholes need their asses stomped!! I'm surprised that neither her or her dad starts working 4 callan's job 2 help and make them more protected especially 4 who they r fighting against low lives assholes that would b greedy and would rather hurt people instead of helping them. Can't wait 4 more...
Callan has been tasked with keeping her safe. Ella is trying to escape the people after her. They want something she has. Will they be able to work together to piece everything together? Will Ella get answers to all the questions of her past?
I liked how both of these characters were able to work together to keep each other safe. I loved Ella's brain and how she was logical and honestly didn't panic much throughout the story. I loved how Callan automatically was protective, but recognized she was capable also. Good read!

Callan's and Ella's story is a jam-packed thrill ride! There's back-to-back vandalism, a motorcycle chase, and the discovery of an unexpected world...and this is only the beginning! Ella is a brilliant, closed-off fighter with a past that leaves her wary of anything that can't be scientifically quantified. Callan is open, magical, and arrives in her life at the perfect time. The sparks this pair generates and the shenanigans of a sinister organization out for world domination ensures the reader's total engagement in this tale!
I think out of the very many books Zoe Chant has published I’ve found very few that aren’t at least a 4 star rating, she’s got the sweetness of finding love, the heat of meeting the one, the suspense of working through baggage and bad guys, and the respect two people who truly deserve each other give and demand in return. On a side note I’m loving this Australian series particularly because she’s managed to get the lingo without it being obvious.
This Zoe Chant story takes us right into Australian popular culture and mythology. Callan is a native, unique and quite loyal shifter, who’s mate is a scientist, discovering real love and real food. While being part of a battle against the same evil corporation we see in several other series. Love the descriptions of Aussie foods — including gas station junk food traditions! Watch out Twinkies!
Enjoyed this cute shifter romance. I like that it was more of a thriller/action story than just a straight up fated mate romance. There were more fight scenes than sexy scenes, more intrigue than sappy romance. I didn't find that a bad thing at all. And I learned about Australian megafauna, specifically the diprotodon. I enjoy a shifter story that isn't your typical wolf, big cat or bear. Fun, fast paced read with interesting characters and great locations.
It's strange when you see your last name as in a book. One of my ancestry came to life in your book. His last name was Woodson. The name Henry Is used a lot as a middname also.David Thomas Dr. Woodson came to the U.S. As aships doctor and decided to stay in the 1500's. Your character Was also a doctor funny how thing work. I enjoyed The book was excellent,
I absolutely loved the book. Plenty of action, adventure and romance. The characters were likable and with each page you get more caught up in the story. I spent the first part of the book trying to picture a diprotodon in my head. Finally looked it up online. My cute cuddly mind picture was nowhere near the actual thing.
This series is so much fun! Loved “Hector” and “Callan” is just as good. Smart, sassy, heroine and a strong shapeshifter hero who isn’t intimidated by her brains and abilities. Exciting plot twists and non stop action. One of those books you read way too fast cause you can’t wait to find out how it ends!
Wow! What a ride of emotions with so many twists and turns in this story but love every moment of it? A beautiful love story that capture your heart with action, adventure, evil shifters, drama, falling in love, and steamy hot romance with awesome characters. A must buy and keep them coming they are awesome.
A great sequel in this Australian adventure! I really enjoyed reading not only a great shifter story, complete with bad guys and evil shifter types fighting good guys, but loved learning more about the outback where the story is set! Great read! Can't wait to go on!
Callan (Outback Shifters Book 2) by Zoe Chant. Scientist Ella’s work place and home are trashed and a mysterious phone call sends her to a remote location. Diprotodon shifter Callan is sent to keep her safe. When they meet they are attracted to each other. They are fated mates and they are being followed.
What a cute/ meet with her lobbing a bottle of milk at him! She's on the run and he comes to her aid to assist where she has to go. He realizes that she is his fated mate as they continue their journey. Only to find themselves in danger. The danger, adventure and excitement continues. Eventually they get their HEA.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading Ella & Callan's story very much. I love reading a happy ever after story it makes me feel better after a very hard day. Thank you for writing this story. Eagerly waiting for the next book in this series.
This was a fun easy read not much conflict or stress just likeable character involved in an interesting story line. It involved romance, action, and some good old-fashioned story telling. I'll be looking forward to book three.
I love all of Zoe Chant works. She makes the characters come alive. In this book I felt like I was right there in the story. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
