At the most lavish wedding of the season, the most brazen kidnapper in New York City takes "Here Comes the Bride" as an invitation. Reality star Erin Easton's "Wedding of the Century" may have a cable crew documenting every extravagant bridal detail, but when "Airhead Easton" disappears from the reception, it's no diva turn. Her dressing room is empty but for a blood-spattered wedding gown and signs of a struggle.
Detective Kylie MacDonald of NYPD Red, already on-scene as a plus-one, loops in her partner, Detective Zach Jordan to activate Level One mobilization for this PR nightmare. But when Erin's "proof of life" video makes it to air -- rather than to evidence -- every A-lister on the guest list becomes a target of suspicion . . . or just a target.
James Patterson is the most popular storyteller of our time and the creator of such unforgettable characters and series as Alex Cross, the Women’s Murder Club, Jane Smith, and Maximum Ride. He has coauthored #1 bestselling novels with Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton, and Michael Crichton, as well as collaborated on #1 bestselling nonfiction, including The Idaho Four, Walk in My Combat Boots, and Filthy Rich. Patterson has told the story of his own life in the #1 bestselling autobiography James Patterson by James Patterson. He is the recipient of an Edgar Award, ten Emmy Awards, the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation, and the National Humanities Medal.
The first sign of trouble was when the bride, Erin Easton, didn’t return to the reception. Her dressing room was empty, even though the cop guarding the door said she’d gone inside, but her bloodied wedding dress was on the floor. Detective Kylie MacDonald was already on the scene as a guest and called her partner, Detective Zach Jordan, both of NYPD Red and the investigation was immediate. The kidnapper was smart – but could the cops be smarter?
With the evidence of life video being broadcast across all mediums, much to the NYPD’s disgust, the alert of a brazen robbery in an elite area was pushed straight to Kylie and Zach. The use of an ambulance and paramedics to gain entrance to wealthy, elderly residents turned out to be an ongoing one. Another clever ruse – but would they get away with what they were doing? Robbing wealthy ladies of their heirlooms – they would be sure to make a mistake…
NYPD Red 6 is the 6th in the NYPD Red series by James Patterson and this one was a little over the top. At one stage it turned farcical – all the cops were working around the clock to find the kidnapped victim, including Kylie and Zach. They’d had little sleep. Suddenly Kylie had a date! And we got details! Now wouldn’t you go home and get some sleep if you actually had some time off! I know I would! I love the short, choppy chapters and fast pace of the novel – plenty of action. And I’ll read the next when it’s released. But come on James!!
James Patterson and Marshall Karp are back to look at how the elite of New York live and have their crimes investigated. In NYPD Red 6, the story looks at how a bride’s kidnapping at the reception turns into a hunt for a deranged man with an agenda all his own. The detectives on this elite squad do all they can and cut corners wherever possible to bring justice to those whose notoriety can be seen across the daily headlines. A story that gains momentum throughout, fans of Patterson can rest assured that this is not another of his flops, likely due to Karp’s collaboration. An intriguing piece in a supersaturated genre.
There’s nothing like a socialite wedding in New York to bring out the cameras. Erin Easton is well-known in the celebrity world and her marriage to a man with deep financial pockets has many wondering about her motives. However, when she is kidnapped while changing at the reception, all Erin leaves behind is a bloodied wedding dress on the floor.
NYPD Detective Kylie MacDonald is pulled into work mode immediately, having been invited to attend. When she brings her partner, Detective Zach Jordan, in to join her, they begin an intense hunt for Erin and whoever might be behind her abduction. With few leads to follow, it’s a waiting game, at least until videos begin emerging, with demands that they be broadcast live.
Meanwhile, Erin and her abductor are hidden away, safe from the prying eyes of any authorities. Things appear to be wrapped in some form of fantasy, where Erin would run away with her abductor and raise children together. This outlandish narrative may be the one things that helps Erin stay alive, as long as she can bide her time and not refuse any of his demands. Still, it will take an act of great courage for Erin to toss off her restraints and return to the man she claims to truly love.
As Detectives MacDonald and Jordan fight to make headway in the case, they are distracted by a second matter, involving EMTs entering the apartments of well-off New Yorkers, only to ransack them and leave bodies in their wake. As bad as this is, nothing can distract from the case at hand, which is broken wide open by a frantic call fro mother victim herself.
Rushing to locate her and make sense of what’s next, NYPD Red will have to act swiftly to instil calm in a city whose lifeblood is gossip and flashy headlines. All the while, the bodies are piling up and the truth remains elusive. That’s never stopped MacDonald and Jordan before. With a twist awaiting them, these NYPD detectives will have to stay vigilant.
It’s always nice to find a book that not only fills time between two larger reads, but is entertaining in its delivery. I have long bemoaned the ‘James Patterson Syndrome’, where books sell not for their content, but because of the name that fills the cover. Collaborators are left with their share of profits, but the quality goes down the tube. This book should not suffer this fate and Marshall Karp can rest assured that he has a winner on his hands. One of the decent series that James Patterson continues to help write, NYPD Red remains on point and a decent read for those whose interest has not yet waned with Patterson.
Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan remain the central characters in this book, delving a little more into their development, with a peppering of backstory. Their gritty determination is on point and they strive to solve the cases put before them, without letting their own lives muddy the waters. There is a sliver of personal story sandwiched into this piece, enough to show that they are real people and not solely dedicated to the job. Working effectively, both MacDonald and Jordan are able to find justice wherever it may be hiding and protect those they are tasked with serving.
There are a number of strong secondary characters throughout the piece, including the central victim, Erin Easton. Each plays their role well to keep the story on point and moving forward. The reader is able to see, albeit superficially, how the rich live and what their lifestyles mean to them. There is also an interesting perspective from the abductor’s point of view, as his flights of fancy and long-standing obsession spill into a form of reality that is only truly understood in the latter part of the novel.
It is usually quite difficult to gauge a Patterson novel’s impact until the very end. The stories are good, but the delivery is sometimes a little hokey or lighter when it comes to narrative style. This book did hold my attention throughout, though I did not receive the impactful piece I had hoped to find, after a significant hiatus from the series. That being said, things flowed well and the narrative pushed things along fairly effectively. Patterson’s short chapter signature is on display here, pushing the reader to move forward just to see what awaits them. Marshall Karp surely helped shape this into a decent read, as he has done in the past with this series. Where things are headed next, I have no idea, but I am still interested to see what MacDonald and Jordan have to discover.
Kudos, Messrs. Patterson and Karp, for a decent police procedural. While I used this as a bridge between two larger reads, I am pleased to have taken the time.
When a celebrity and reality star Erin Easton is kidnapped on her wedding day, RED, the most prestigious task force unit in the NYPD is called to solve this high profile case.
Aside from not so surprising ending, I find this installment to be good and kept me entertained while I dig out during the first significant snow storm of the season. Marshall Karp and JP seem to be a solid collaboration.
I am like a moth to a flame and I keep scorching my wings. I take on one too many Patterson co-authored novels and I ask myself why every time! That said it is not a bad instalment, it's just not a great one. I had the twist figured in the first third which probably doesn't help either. I really enjoyed the opening scenes at a lavish wedding, which quickly becomes an abduction. Reality TV star Erin Easton, her newly 'minted husband and mother-in-law feature as the characters in this book (fair warning it is about as mundane as watching reality TV).
Elite NYPD Red Detectives Kylie MacDonald and her partner, Zach Jordan follow the crumbs in what felt like a rin of the mill story. Some interesting bits and pieces but not one I'd write home about!
Quick read with a good plot and of course some of the reoccurring characters from the NYPD Red series readers have come to enjoy. I loved the plot and subplot in this installment even though it was pretty predictable and a few of the characters were easy to despise. Overall, a quick and entertaining read to enjoy in an evening.
I wasn't going to read the newest NYPD Red novel since I had distanced myself from James Patterson's novels. But then my dad read it and said it was pretty good, so I decided to give it a chance.
I'm glad I did since this may be one of my favourite NYPD Red novels. There were 2 solid mysteries that had me guessing and thankfully there wasn't much will they/won't they between Zach and Kylie. The short chapters had me hooked and I wanted to keep reading. I wasn't sure where the one storyline was going to go since the kidnapper was revealed early on, but thankfully things weren't how they appeared.

The Red Books never disappoint. Zach and Kylie are solid, solid characters. Read the series if you haven’t.
This one kept with the real feel of today’s celebrities. Could see any them inserted into the pages of this book and none of us being remotely surprised. This series won’t be getting old anytime soon with cases fitting the NYPD Red profile everywhere.
2.5 rounded up. This book was lacking something. There were two main stories and neither one had a satisfying ending. They were too contrived, in my opinion. The entire book felt rushed.
“We’re all whores in one way or another,” yes kids - that’s a direct quote from NYPD Red 6! And when you think about it; it’s a true statement. As the book goes on to explain, we’ve all gotten into bed with strangers (car salesman, realtor, hopefully you smell what I’m stepping in) because they have something that we want or we need. And yes, the truth hurts sometimes.😜
Well can I just see I didn’t see that coming? Bravo for the marital mayhem that ensued within this read! 5stars❤️
Another fun episode in the world of NYPD Red! Love the characters, their relationships to each other, and there is always a great new spin on a mystery for the team to solve. This series is always a great go-to when I want a quick, well written no-frills detective story.
Decent entry in the series, even though parts were predictable. This book had a fast enough pace that it wasn't boring during the down times of the investigation, and I actually didn't mind Kylie's character quite so much in this book. I had really begun to despise her in the last couple of books, due to her obnoxious and selfish behavior. She was quite tolerable in this book compared to others.
NYPD Red is one of Patterson’s lesser-known mystery series about two detectives - Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald – who are a special investigative team focused on serving and protecting the rich and elite of New York city. In typical Patterson style, Zach and Kylie were also former lovers coming out of the police academy years ago and Zach has never stopped loving her, even though Kylie has sworn off ever dating a cop again. Because they work so close together, the sexual tension adds to the aura of their working relationship and is optimistically used as a tool to keep the reader’s interest.
In “NYPD Red 6”, the reader is hit with two fast-moving plotlines. First, a famous reality star, Erin Easton, is starring in her own “Wedding of the Century” with Jamie Gibbs, son and heir to his mother’s multimillion-dollar international modeling agency. Their wedding and reception are being filmed by a cable network for airing to her public fans and her longtime manager has everything planned to include every crucial detail. That is until, disaster hits. When changing in her dressing room following the wedding, Erin disappears, leaving behind a bloody wedding gown and signs of a fight.
Kylie Mac Donald is already on the scene because she was lucky to be attending the ceremony. She immediately calls he partner, Zach Jordan to the scene of the abduction and their investigation is off and running. Using their special skills and key members of their special team, they are able to track a potential suspect, one who has military and survival training. However, they find themselves constantly challenged by the cable network executive who receives “proof of life” videos from the kidnaper and airs them before their investigative team can get their hands on the evidence.
The secondary plotline involves two men pretending to be emergency ambulance technicians, responding to emergency calls of elderly rich women; however, those calls are fake and they use the visit to rob their victims of large amounts of cash and valuable jewelry. That is until they rob someone related to the New York Mayor and demands that Kylie and Zach be assigned to her case because of their past newsworthy successes. It doesn’t matter they are in a middle of major kidnapping gone awry. They must find a way to juggle both investigations and solve them both.
Overall, this is another one of the typical Patterson collaborations where there is a lot of fast-paced action where the leads spend most of their time running around following the clues and distractions left by the bad guys. This one had a lot of twists and turns, most of which you could see coming. Patterson even throughs in some minor character development to remind us of Zach is secretly in love with his partner, when Kylie gets sets up with Zach’s girlfriend’s brother. However, I have a feeling that Zach and Kylie are cursed to never connect, or if ever, it will at least be really dragged out…
I don’t know whether that is a good thing or bad thing to admit, but I get Patterson’s books from the library because I don’t find him good enough to buy and keep in my library. He’s mind candy – simple, fast-paced, detective and mystery-oriented adventures that can be read in about two to three days and then easily left behind. Nice escapism, but nothing super memorable. This time out I was able to figure out the endgame in the first seventy to eighty pages, which made it a bit predictable. This was a nice, casual read that will be mostly forgotten in the next week or two.
As a side note, I find myself losing interest in the repetitive nature of Kylie’s and Zach’s relationship. Over the last several books Kylie has grown quite self-centered and whiny. She spends most of her time teasing Zach relentlessly or telling him how he’s her best friend. Although Zach isn’t necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed, I am starting to think that he deserves better than being teased and taunted by such a selfish and overbearing person. Also, he needs to put up or shut up. Truth be told, if things don’t change in the next outing or two, I will probably drop this series from my reading list…
Another one from the Patterson literary factory. His teaming up with Mitchell Karp gives us the continuing story of NYPD's unit set up to deal with NYC's rich & famous...A celebrity wedding & kidnapping, as well as a series of home invasions by thugs disguised as EMTs dominate this one...Just OK!
Loved the twist at the end of the main case, the secondary case was interesting too, good pace kept me turning the page. Looking forward to more NYPD red stories
I was in the mood for familiarity, wanting to choose a book from a series that I know I enjoy, so I got settled in with my favourite Patterson protagonists. There were once again two cases in this one, and while I sometimes find this concept distracting, Karp & Patterson usually pull it off well and this time was no different. The book opens right into the first of these cases, with Kylie already on the crime scene as an invited guest to the event, and the story is kept pacy throughout.
I wasn’t as surprised by the ending as I sometimes am, and I’m slightly disappointed that . But I did enjoy the build-up to the reveal, once again Team Red are good at walking the reader through the thought process rather than somehow magically coming up with the solution, and I did appreciate how relatively straightforward it was (I’ve read some books with complicated endings recently!).
On the character development side of things, I loved reading about how . I don’t know if it was this element that stood out, or if there was a little more of their personal lives in this one compared to several of its predecessors, and I do like it when fictional detectives also have a strong non-work side to them. The .
This was a very good Patterson novel with a lot more twists and turns than the last few I've read lately. He and Marshall Karp return to great form in NYPD Red 6. It's a great ride but it does take a little while to get there. No spoilers in this review, just suffice it to say I was surprised several times.
4-4.5. This is definitely my favorite JP series. I get exactly what’s expected—fun, interesting, likable main detectives, 2 storyline plots to solve, mystery, twists and turns. Lots of action and suspense to the end. Quick read.
As much as I hate the commercialization of the James Patterson brand and the prolific amount of books he churns out every year; this is one series of his that I actually enjoy. True crime stories with a celebrity twist and a soupçon of humor in each one. Worth the cost of purchasing versus waiting for the Palm Beach County Library to join the 21st century with current ebooks available for checkout. I miss the high-tech ambience of my former haunt in Northern VA where every library had more digital media than hard copy. Not everyone who lives in Palm Beach has blue hair and a penchant for hard copy books that they totter in to checkout manually. Wake up PBC.
This installment of NYPD Red was eh, okay. Neither case really held my interest, and there were no big character plots to follow either. I like this series and the premise of it, but maybe, I waited too long before reading this installment because I just wasn’t into it. Hopefully, NYPD Red 7 will be better!
