A Chinese Legend.

A British Secret.

Star-Crossed Lovers with Incompatible Magic.

Brixton Flew works as a professor of wielder instruction at Rembrandt Academy, hoping to erase the regrets of his youth along with the resulting debt. But when he comes face to face with his biggest regret—the woman who broke his heart, Adelaide Favan—Brixton soon realizes his troubles have only begun.

Unable to control her magic, Adelaide knew leaving Brixton was the only way to protect him when they were younger. Now she discovers he is the key to recovering the Dragon Eyes, a legendary treasure connected to her magic and her family's disgraced legacy—and she knows the risk is great, to both his life and her heart.

With others seeking the power of the Dragon Eyes, Brixton and Adelaide must outwit their foes and face down their families to save London from an ancient legend that sleeps beneath the magic portal in their city.

But the renewed passion growing between them may prove to be the greater peril ...

One Flew Through the Dragon Heart is the first book in a new steampunk series by C.S. Johnson, blending together history, romance, mecha-dragons and magic against the glittering backdrop of 1880’s Victorian London.

FROM THE BOOK:

It seemed impossible that Brixton could both remember and forget everything about their first kiss as her lips parted under his once more.

The same heightened desperation called to him as her softness melted effortlessly against the tautness of his body. He tasted the same soft, malty sweetness of her mouth, feeling the fullness of her lips as they flowered beneath his. Her body curved into his, her fingers gripping his knuckles. He heard her same, muted sigh of pleasure as their joined hands collapsed between them, and he felt the same heady rush as they collided into each other.

But this time was different, too. He resisted the urge to run his hands down her body, to gather her against him. Before, he had been too intoxicated by the taste of her to wonder if she could handle the full extent of his passion; this time, he was overwhelmed, but he was all too aware of what it was like to lose her.

The equal power of their magic diminished as he began to be consumed. It could have been years or seconds since their last meeting; he had wanted her then, and he only wanted her more now.

The engines behind them sparked; the ship began to sink. Brixton felt his own destruction become increasingly inevitable before she reluctantly tore herself away from him.

His voice was a husky whisper as he stared into the silver seas of Adelaide’s gaze. “I’ve missed you.”

4.5 stars

I’ve only read about five books from this author, but I think this may be my favorite by her yet!

Absolutely loved both the hero and heroine. Their romance was just…not sure how to describe it. Ha! However, I really enjoyed seeing Brix fight for his relationship and his love for Adelaide. They have a unique relationship and was more than thrilled by their ending.

The magical aspect of this book was epic! Definitely one of my favorite parts as I greatly loved the blend of magic, steampunk, and the Asian legend. Was SO much fun! (Granted, not sure if the characters would agree with certain events that take place, but sure made for great reading. *winks*)

One thing I've really come to appreciate from C.S. Johnson's stories is that family plays an important role. This one was no exception. I always have a new appreciation for the banter between my siblings as Brixton has with his. Plus, it always makes the story a little more relatable seeing a character struggle with family member expectations as I do.

Overall, "One Flew Through the Dragon Heart" was an excellent read and one I would definitely recommend to fantasy and steampunk readers! The beginning seemed a tad slow (only reason I'm not giving a full five stars), but the whole of this story is marvelous. I'm eagerly hoping book two will be releasing soon as I'm sad I can't hang out with these characters a little longer (especially Ticker).

*(Many thanks to the author for providing me an ARC. I was not required to write a review or positive one. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*

It's a ridiculously fun and sweet romance, mixed with magic and mech-dragons. I really enjoyed getting to play with the alternative history in the world-building behind this one, but I've kept my signature complicated fun, family dysfunction, and true love.

Here's the blurb I have (so far!):

Brixton went silent as his chest tightened, his heart clenched, and his fingers shook.
He had only just barely stopped himself.
He had come so bloody close to saying her name.
It was appalling to think after nearly four years he still thought of her—thought of her, dreamed of her, but never spoke of her.
How could he? Remembering her was like lighting himself on fire and forgetting how much it burned.

One Flew Through the Dragon Heart
(Favan & Flew #1)
C.S. Johnson

One Flew Through the Dragon Heart is a good book for a young adult to read, without being overwhelming explicit content; which making us parents, and grand-parents question a book. We have an exciting tale full of Steampunk elements, magic, mystery, intrigue, ancient legends, powerful family ties, action and romance! A villain that becomes a hero, and there is even a dragon!! As a new adventure begins with life in London, from heartbreak to love, magic and legends of family curses, lost gems and reprisal all melded together. A story is full of romance, intrigue, adventure and misadventures leading our hero falters through to a satisfying conclusion, of the magical enchantments with the specialty in machines; his magical, talking watch.

This book was quite different from what I normally read, this is my first steampunk book and found it rather interesting; full of machines and technology, embracing the old-fashioned elements of the Victorian era and the magic of the era that we are so familiar with today; it really had a little bit of everything! I wanted the story to slow down a bit and explain the sinewy flashbacks and the mention of things from past in conversation.

Award-winning, genre-hopping author C.S. Johnson had done it again, incredible!!!! Not C. S. Johnson's normal genre; but, she does not disappoint, I enjoyed reading One Flew Through the Dragon Heart, and the overall concept of the story, getting to know the characters, seeing each develop as the story progresses. C. S. Johnson has established her characters with a loving relationship between the characters, siblings within a family, as well as the romantic love and friendship. The humor throughout the story was a good touch, nice to have a little chuckle here and there in books. Thank you CSJ for another excellent story, cannot wait for the next adventure. I was gifted the book “One Flew Through the Dragon Heart”, for one of my other reviews and felt that I should give a review too. This is a great adventure of new reading genres, and therefore feel CSJ and her book both are deserving of 5-stars each.

Talk about starting with a bang! I loved this book! It was a great ride! The characters are very nuanced! Brix starts out to as a sort of shy, quiet guy you want to take home to meet your parents. But as the story progressed you found out he had a bad boy streak! I loved to see that the hero has flaws as you move through the story. Adelaide has a depth of character not usually found in this genre. Even Ticker was a great character and when it seemed as though Ticker was lost I was heartbroken! One of the greatest lines I have ever read was found in this book - "If I suffer, I suffer for loving you. Create a life with me or destroy me with your kisses. I can't bear the thought of being apart from you. Unless you're with me, I'm only half alive." I love this line and it sums up the essence of this story perfectly.

Magic, legends and family curses. Love and heartbreak starts at school. Rembrandt Academy is an elite school for those with magical abilities. Brixton and Adelaide are two of the many students, but they are both at the top of their class. Adelaide is teased continuously by her classmates because of her youth, ethnicity and family connections. Brixton and Adelaide find that together they can create anything. Then Adelaide leaves school. She returns to London 4 years later and they “bump” into each other. A new adventure begins as love, curses, lost gems and revenge meld together. All those that believe in the curse, think that the curse will answer their own selfish goals.

Received this book as an ARC.

I enjoyed reading this book, the characters and the story line. It covers a bit of magic, to dragons and the life in London.
It was great getting to know the characters and watching them grow as you read into the story. I enjoyed the flash back scenes as it lets you understand where the characters are coming from and who they are and why they do the things they do.
Love the relationships between the characters too, sibling and family love as well as the romantic love and friendship.
There is humor through the story and it was good to have a little chuckle here and there.
Thanks for the excellent story. can't wait for the next adventure to continue....

WOW! It took me awhile to get into reading it because of outside interferences, but I LOVED the way way the Chinese & British History played into the story. It is awesome how 2 incompatible Magics can work together without killing each other. The trouble Brix & Ada get into then the way they come through it all, is great. The author did a wonderful job writing this book. It is easier to read than most other Fiction books. It sucks you in & you have a hard time putting it down. Could not wait to see the end!

What an amazing story that no one should miss out on, once it’s released. Brixton is doing fine as Professor of Wielding instruction. Unfortunately for him , he meets the girl who broke his heart, long ago. Totally enjoyed this book by a fantastic writer.

Put dragon in the title & I have to read it!! This was slow starting for me bot well worth continuing with it. It’s a mystery too figuring out where the story is going. Then there is the romance side. And magic- both good & bad kind. I love how it all came together. There has to be another book & I’m anxious to read It. The author is a favorite of mine. I received a free copy through Bookfunnel.

An interesting and enjoyable historical, steam-punk story full of magic, dragons, legends, history, friendship, family, loyalty and love.

Brixton Flew is a kind-hearted young man working as a professor at Rembrandt Academy. He also has a knack for getting himself trouble, especially when it comes to Adelaide Favan. When the girl who broke his heart returns and is wrapped up in a dangerous plot, Brix helps her with hopes that he can keep her safe.
Adelaide is cursed. All Ada wants is to be in control her power so she willingly helps her great-grandmother's plan. There is a kind soul in there but the curse has left her guarding her heart.

There are other great characters, such as Brix's adventurous sister Luella and Ada's moody cousin Jiahao, but I do not feel like I got to know them as well as I would have liked. Still, I think Luella is my favourite character with her compassion, strength and talent for dramatic performances that prove to be both useful and impressive.
Another "character" I want to mention is Ticker. Ticker is a watch that Brix created and continues to power with a magic loop. Ticker is polite and sarcastic making him a delightful addition to the story.

The book flowed pretty well, even with the few flashback scenes as they helped fill in the gaps of Brixton and Adelaide's history. There were a few elements I was not fond of, such as a disregard for another's feelings and that so many people seem to be manipulating others. However, there are plenty of great things about the book that made up for those. The plot involved hunting down dragon eyes, creating a heart for a mecha dragon, colour magic and links to the Guy Fawkes plot. As such, I was intrigued by the plot, enjoyed learning about this world and am interested to see where this storyline leads.

Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Really interesting premise for a book. The world-building was excellent since the setting is an alternate London where magic is woven into a steampunk world. It reminded me a bit of The Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve.

It took a little while to get to the heart of the plot, but as we began to get more into the current plot to steal the Dragons Eyes and the history of Adelaide and Brixton’s sad past, it picked up.

Sadly, I didn’t completely enjoy their relationship and felt that it was a bit toxic, despite how much they protested that they were eternally in love, etc. As often seen in YA novels, there’s a Romeo & Juliet component to their romance. It felt a bit forced. Additionally, the dastardly nature of the Rembrandt (School) Board was never really delved into very deeply, nor was the acrimonious relationship between Brixton and his father. This felt like a missed opportunity to shore up the plot a bit, but, since this is book one of a new series, could be remedied or at least expanded on in future books. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and would probably be great for fans of The Mortal Engines.

My only other complaint was that there was an odd author’s note at the end of the book that seemed disjointed and not at all relevant to the story with odd mentions of God and the author’s relationship with their spouse. It felt a little preachy, but also just left a strange uncomfortable feeling, like something too personal had been divulged. I would recommend this not be included in final editions or at the least be revised for coherence.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and would be interested in further adventures set in this world.

Oh my goodness! I just finished this book and I don't know what to do with ALL THE FEELS!!!

OK, first, let me tell you a story: when I subscribed to the author's newsletter, this was the book she was working on, and after reading a couple of the #sneakpeeks she included on her weekly messages, I was hooked. However, when I finally got the opportunity to have an e-copy on my hands (fine, on my Kindle app, but you get the point), I really enjoyed it, up until the 6th or 7th chapter. Seriously, I don't know what happened, but I got unhooked from the story. Thus, I decided to stop reading it, and come back to it when I felt ready to dive into its world again. A few days ago, I was looking for a specific quote from this book (I love to highlight the ones that really speak to me), and even though I only had read less than a third of it, I had many, so after reading them, I decided to give this book another go, and boy was I hooked this time!

What I loved about this book was a) the world: steampunk is not a genre I'm that familiar with, but this book made me love it. I love the mix of magic and engineering going on, and how not everyone is born with this ability. b) the characters: Brixton (Brix) Flew was an amazing main character, and I loved getting to know the wielders world, as well as the Rembrandt School/Academy through his eyes. I especially liked that he's definitely not perfect, and has already a record with the police pertaining a theft. I loved his love for engineering, and especially his sort of sidekick Ticker (can I have one too?). Of course, one can't understand Brixton without his family (it was certainly interesting to see all of the relationships, but I especially loved his bond with his sister, Luella) nor without Adelaide (Ada) Favan. She's so unique, has a special (dark) magic, and is the love of Brixton's life. And yet, she also has her own baggage (past and family) which will serve to further (and complicate) the book's main storyline. c) the romance: honestly, it's what first drew me to this book and the reason that made me add it so fast to my TBR list. Having just finished it, I, again, just loved the uniqueness of Ms. Johnson's storytelling. I think this book just made me appreciate every obstacle Brix and Ada have to face in order to fight for a relationship of their own, and how their love is not something just handed out to them (as in without sacrifice).

This book has a bit of everything: romance, magic, London, steampunk, dragon(s) and engineering (or mecha-world). I've certainly loved every minute of this story, and I can't wait for the next book in this series! *High-five to the author!*

This book was quite different than the rest of the steampunk books I have read. We are introduced to a young prop from the esteemed Tech institution in London. He is proficient at magical enchantments with the specialty in machines, his magical watch and why he became a instructor in the institution in the first place.
Like most steampunk it is full of machines and technology however embracing the Victorian world it takes part in the Victorian era because the magic made the world come early to the mordern age that we are so familiar with today. Yet there is the old fashioned refinement of the Victorian age.
This story is full of romance intrigue and adventure while our hero bumbles through all his misadventures leading to a satisfying conclusion. There will be more in this series but it comes to a snug conclusion making a you not feel as upset that you have to wait for the next segment.
Another good thing is that a young adult can read this without overwhelming explicit content making us parents question the book. There is some kissing, a bit of violence and unfortunately making a villain a hero, but it is explained why that happens. With that I feel it was a very good story even though it took a bit to read it because of all the holiday doings we are involved in.

Our couple has history, not all of it good, but sometimes there is no one else to turn to than the people you know.

I love steampunk with all the gadgets and alternate history bits that get thrown in. This book definitely has all that, plus it mixes in a little magic with the tech to power things. The blending is done very well and fits into the overall setting which is richly detailed. Our characters are also well developed with unique personalities and flaws which make them more real. The writing is excellent and while the pacing might seem a bit slow at times, that is because the author takes the time to paint the scene rather than just sketch it in. Personally, I rather enjoyed the tapestry that is created as a result. The plot that weaves through it all is also well developed with plenty of twists and turns to keep things exciting. Overall, a very enjoyable book.

Highly recommended.

One Flew Through the Dragon Heart by C.S. Johnson is a steampunk fantasy.

Taking place in an alternate London where a gaping magical portal hovers over parliament.

I loved the magic system created for this story world. White magic and black magic are taken literally in this color based magic system.

This novel also features a great addition to Dragon lore.

The main POV characters, Brixton and Ada were great. With personality and chemistry they make a couple worthy of shipping.

Without spilling spoilers all I can say is that I loved this book and eagerly await the next Installment.

In all my years of reading, I'd never ventured into the steampunk genre. I have nothing against it, I guess I just hadn't had an interesting book jump out at me. Based on my limited general idea of steampunk, I imagine this story may not be exactly representative of the genre, with dragons and magic being thrown into the technologically advanced Victorian setting, but I could be wrong. Regardless, I enjoyed reading it. The story moves along quickly, keeping you turning pages. The main characters were both interesting and pretty believably flawed, although Adelaide sometimes seemed even more prickly than necessary. Luella was an intriguing side character, and in any future books in this series I'd love to see a bit more of what she can really do with her magic.

“He’s not a machine, Brix, and there’s no need to pretend you know it all when you only happen to know a lot.”

Brixton Flew and Adelaide Favan have, by far,2 of the most fun steampunk characters this year. Nerdy and proud of it, this rendition of London is full of adventure danger, love...and a dragon, a truly wonderful time is had by all. Add a soupçon of Asian mythology, and C.S Johnson has proven yet again that she is the queen of whatever genre she tackles and I’ll keep reading as long as she keeps writing! Highly Recommended 5/5

A YA novel with interesting characters and a great combination of romance and adventure. Flew is a complex man and he is bitter and unlikeable without Adelaide but he transforms into a completely different person when he's with her and it was interesting to see this contrast. However, it was Luella, Flew's smart and spunky sister who was my favorite character.

I particularly enjoyed the part where a mecha dragon came to life and was possesed both by a dragon spirit and a talking clock!

If you enjoy steampunk and romance, I'd highly recommend you give this book a read.

Loved the magic and steampunk mix. The Chinese legend of the Dragon's Eyes was interesting. The romance of the story was slight and I really didn't feel the chemistry between Brixton and Adelaide. The main part for me was the legend and action. Story was slow at parts but the ending was full of action. I would try the next one in this series to see what happens next.

I was given an ARC and this is my honest review. I was so excited to read this steampunk novel and soon found myself immersed in a fantastic world of magic and steampunk. I absolutely loved this book. The main characters, Brixton Flew and Adelaide Favan quickly became two of my favorite characters ever!! Happy to say, this story is full of quick witted and fun characters and is a great read. Full of adventure, danger, magic, London, a love story and a dragon. Who doesn't love a dragon! One of my favorite characters is Luella, but you will have to read the story to know who she is and how she is involved. I cannot wait for the sequel. CS Johnson has done it again with a great beginning to a trilogy.

Brix and Ada meet at the Rembrandt School where they bond over their mutual love of engineering. When the DragonHeart gets broken everything changes for them. Ada has to go away and Brix becomes an indentured professor for the Rembrandt School. When Ada shows up in his life again so does adventure and quite a bit of danger!

I adored the vibrant descriptions and the way the author described the way magic flowed. Really good and intricate book. I hope we will get Lou's story in the future.
