The Last Unicorn meets Tamora Pierce in HERLOT OF ALONIA, the first book in a coming of age historical fantasy series.
In the small village of Alonia, tucked away in the kingdom of Eraska, a baby girl named Herlot is born into the world beneath a full moon and a grove of willow trees. Herlot is healthy and clearly touched by magic, which forever marks her as an outsider. The people of Alonia worry that the strange events that surround Herlot mean she is a bad omen, but Herlot learns to rely on her imagination and makes new friends, like the unicorn Devotio, folding herself into the magical world around her.
“No matter what happens, the stars can see you....You’re never alone.”
Just as Herlot turns eighteen and has found her place in her village, the kingdom of Eraska is invaded by the evil King Felix--a man willing to perform unspeakable acts in his search for a source of power to conquer all.
It is time for Herlot to find her voice, embrace her magic, and save her people.
“Herlot of Alonia breathes new life into the meaning of magic, belief, and freedom told through an epic adventure that delivers action-packed moments, a journey of self-discovery for a dazzling heroine, and a heartwarming bond with a unicorn." - Liz Konkel
"Rosestone has crafted a truly enchanting novel that encompasses everything that a traditional fantasy tale ought to have but also expands into so much more of an emotive coming of age tale… [An] inspiring and engaging tale that is pure magic on every page. Overall, I'd highly recommend Herlot of Alonia for fantasy fans everywhere." - K.C. Finn
"Herlot of Alonia is without a doubt a classic tale reminiscent of the wondrous adventures of The Lord Of The Rings. Steeped in the small kingdom of Eraska, we fall under the spell of Herlot, her family, friends, and the magical creatures that surround her, as she grows up in a land where riches are measured by the contents of souls, and gold is taboo to all.” - Steven Robson, Reader’s Favorite
I am a writer, historian, and instructional designer who can always be found with a book. I particularly enjoy ancient and medieval history. If I am not studying or writing, I love to garden and go for nature walks with my family and dog.
My love for fantasy fiction started right from Harry Potter and since then, I have read so many fantasy fictions. Recently I got my hands on Herlot of Alonia. This is also a fantasy fiction involving magic.
The protagonist of the story is Herlot who was born in Alonia. At the time of her delivery, ilvy felt that her baby gonna have some special abilities. Baby's father Ernest had already thought a name for his upcoming baby. He told ilvy to name her as Herlot if it's a girl. She started living in a magical world as the villager's behavior was not right with her.
But when the village was overtaken by the King Felix, she has the responsibility to save her village and the magical world. The narration of the story is really smooth and clear. The language was lucid but I also added many new words to my vocabulary. The title of the story is apt and cover page is nice. The story is gripping. I am really excited to know the story further.
Herlot of Alonia is the first book in the fantasy trilogy that is about alchemy, magic, unicorns, emperors and a lot of adventures. It is a story of courage and survival that revolves around a girl Herlot, born and brought up in Alonia, a part of Eraska. As a kid, Herlot is always sidelined by people because they find her different due to her strange birth. One day, while playing in the forest, she finds a magical friend Devioto, a unicorn. But this friendship comes with some conditions. Devioto wants Herlot to keep his existence hidden because of past events in his life.
On the wedding day of Herlot’s brother, some men of King Felix of Isolda invade the land of Eraska, and that changes everything. With that attack, Herlot loses the people she loves. In these troubling times, her magical friend Devioto saves her. Herlot leaves her homeland along with Devioto and goes on a remarkable journey to save other Eraskians. Her journey gets equally magical and deadlier. Herlot meets new people, loses a few. She finds out her magical abilities, which come with some responsibilities. But troubles occur and she starts questioning her powers. Will she succeed and save her people? There's a secret. There’s a mystery. So, saying another word will give out many potential spoilers. As a book one in the trilogy, this book ends on a perfect cliffhanger.
My Take: If you have ever loved the movies like The Lord of Rings, Moana, Brave, How to Train your dragon, etc, then this book is going to vibe with you at many levels. With exemplary characters and unique storyline, Rosestone delivered a classic fantasy novel one can ask for. As you read, you see characters growing in the story. Every character comes with unique traits of their own. The only thing I disliked is, some of the characters that are introduced in early chapters were missing from the running story and appeared at the end directly, especially the villainous ones.
In my opinion, the narration is of this book heavy but engaging. Maria displayed her great storytelling abilities in this book. I can’t imagine how difficult it would have been to polish all the conversion of such a bulky book. And oh dear lord, the book is really long but worth a read.
If you are a fantasy lover and can read big books, then take my word - You are going to love this book. Go for it. Highly recommended.
If you have ever been interested in unicorns then this book will keep you seated until the very end.
Herlot of Alonia is a fantasy book that revolves around one major character “Herlot”. This book is filled with magic and adventures. Herlot, the main protagonist of this book was considered as a bad omen as she was not born according to the norms of Alonia. How sad! She was never welcomed by people around her that affectionately which led to loneliness and craving for someone who would understand her. One day she finds unicorn who was magical and had his own mysterious past which was oblivion to Herlot initially. She makes him her friend as they both seemed to accept each other as they were. Moreover as her friendship with unicorn grows, she has to go through something terrible in order to save people around her. What happened suddenly? What was the truth of unicorn? Why Herlot was chosen to save people and go through a difficult journey?
Being a fantasy book, writing style of this book is not lucid. It can only be understood by people who are interested in reading fantasies or people who are too patient enough to read this book. The book follows slow narration with each and every detail which author has penned down so well. The magical world which author has created is so mesmerising and you will feel lost in it.
What i liked the most about this book is “attention to the detail” as though the language is difficult but still author has focused on narration that if read patiently can be understood by people. Moreover i liked the emotional touch this book offers to its readers.
I would highly recommend this book to people who love fantasies and would love to read about friendship between unicorn and Herlot
Do you ever lost in such a big fantasy and try not to come out of it? __ Well, yes that happened to me this very first time. __ I was reading this book for a week and maybe more than that and finally, I complete it. I must say it’s a long thick bulky read with a lot of patience having inside me and also a gradually building curiosity was a must. __ The storyline is very strong, connective, elaborative, and fancy. The vocabulary is a bit tough and also a certain level of difficulty too for me as English is not my mother language. Over and above I have learned various terms and values from this book too. __ Talking about the story, in very brief and without spoilers. That, the place and characters are very well described with the sprinkle of beauty, love, fresh and fancy. Through this towards the story, you will make more sense towards nature, freedom, inner joy, and whatnot. Herlot is a beautiful soul with characteristics of strong women, faith, and fire within her. She belongs to a village name Alonia. And she is the main and heart-winning character od story. Also, unicorns played a major role in the story. (To know that you need to purchase this book). __ I would like to you that if you are a person of long healthy read with great patience and also a person who loves to read a crazy fantasy book, then you can give a shot to this book. __ Author: Maria Rosestone Book: Herlot of Alonie Pages: 400+ Rate: 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5/5
➡️ Herlot of Alonia was special child and still considered as bad omen in her village because she was born not as per the social norms of Alonia . Throughout her childhood she was ignored by villagers. One day she discovered something unbelievable, one magical creature - a unicorn, that believed Herlot and accepted her fully. Everything shattered in front of her when she loses the unicorn with no sign of return. Herlot of Alonia is a book that will take you to the fantasy world. The story is set in Alonia where the star of our story Herlot was born. Since her birth she was considered a bad omen by her villagers. But as she grew up, she got used to and adjusted in the village.
As we read story ahead, we see Herlot got the big task of saving her village from King Felix. The fantasy world description seems so real that I loved it. While reading, I was totally hooked to the story. I must say that the book is written well.

Extremely fun read, great young adults. I'd have enjoyed this when I was just getting into the Redwall and Emalan series in middle school.
Herlot is a unique girl, from birth she wasn't considered "normal" as she was born outside of the village. Soon strange things happen to her, she can "see" footprints, she can disappear... and most of all, she can communicate and be with unicorns who are in hiding! Along with her friends, they move to protect their new found friend and the girl who "is strange".
Received this as part of a giveaway; my review was not influenced by said giveaway.
The kind of story that sucks you in and makes you feel like magic is real. This books reminds me of another lifetime. And when you spend hours reading and have to close the pages to come back to the real world with that hazy feeling in your brain that has you longing to go back to the story world, you know it's an amazing book. Thank you for sharing this story with the world!
Absolutely amazing. I couldn't stop reading. And then it ends, leaving me wanting more! What happens next? I need to know! Magic, unicorns, battles...everything you could possibly want in a story! Tell me...is her name pronounced HerLOT or HerLOW? Thank you!
My favorite part was getting to experience a more serious side to unicorns in an adult fantasy setting. This series combines the magic of fairy tales with more serious elements appropriate for adults and ya. Totally recommend to fans of Amy Harmon, Naomi Novik, and Diana Gabaldon!
I got an ebook version as a giveaway through Goodreads. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was intrigued by the premised and decided to give it a shot.
I'm glad I did!
We follow Herlot as she grows up in a small village, essentially cut off from the rest of the world. She posseses the ability to do magic and is deeply connected to both the natural world and either the past or the spirit world. She is singled out for her odd abilities, made fun of by her peers, and looked at strangely by the adults. As she grows up, she learns to manage her abilities in ways that will help her fit in with her friends and family. But she can't run from destiny...
When something terrible happens and she encounters tragic loss, Herlot will have to figure out how to embrace who she truly is or keep denying what she knows to be true of herself. We walk with her through her internal struggles, self-doubt, happiness, anxiety, failures, fears, and triumphs.
This book was surprisingly...sweet. And I mean that in a good way, the best way possibly. It is well-developed as far as world-building, plot, and character growth. It is unpretentious, but not boring. It was an interesting read, with plenty of elements of medieval fantasy to keep fans of this genre enthralled. It's easy enough to read for a highschooler or even a mature mid-teen, but with plenty enough depth for adults to enjoy without feeling dumber while reading it.
The author doesn't hit us over the head with morals or points to be made about current society; everything that happens and everything about the person Herlot is feels natural, not forced for the purpose of social commentary.
It was a really, really good story and I look forward to reading the next installment. This was truly a hidden gem.
