The First Solis Elf in 500 years, Callon joins the military to escape his father's plans. Unfortunately, he can't escape his Solis Genes. Sent from the Elvan Army to the Fae Honor Guard to the Fae Marines, he knows the transfers are due to his father's manipulations to make him marry Brant, his ex-fiancé.
Gunny, a Fae Master Gunnery Sergeant, wants nothing more than to stay away from love and take care of his platoon. Playing nursemaid to the pretty Elf Lieutenant is not on the list but he can't deny the attraction when his wings pop out every time he's around the man.
But Callon's father had plans for the power he will gain through Callon's marriage and he's not about to let anything, even the Marines, stand in his way.
A protective Platoon, Ex's who don't understand no, and Callon's father's plans stand in the way of Callon and Gunny, making a Present Uncertain let alone a future.
Hmmm ......... so this was a little bonkers ! But I would be interested in trying something else by this author , and how can you not love Fae Marines !
This book was a military romance with side order of elves. The book has lots of action and plenty of intrigue to keep the mystery lovers happy. It had everything I love in a book. I hope this is a start of a new series
Sometimes I over star, but this book deserves each one. I love the fresh world building, with a blend of new and plenty of standard elf/fairy/mate magic. The military setting was great, the love story sweet, the sex got but not overwhelming the story line. I hope the author revisits this world!
Disappointing. Scattered premise(s), no world building or character development. I have no idea how, why or when the MC's fell in love because apparently time passes with no frame of reference. Random haracters are thrown into the mix just in time to save the day.
The author couldn't seem to make up his mind if he was writing about the military or Fae/Elves. There seems to be no reason for there to be a military in the story other than one of the MC's needed a place to hide his father couldn't get to him after he ran away.
I nearly DNF'd multiple times but am stubborn. I gave it an extra star just because the typos were minimal.
I loved the world that Harrison Phillips created, the elves and the fae with their different laws and societal rules. Callon is a sweet but hard working elf who joined the military to escape from his awful father and ex-fiancé. Unfortunately he was blessed with Solis Genes, the first in 500 years. Gunny, is in the Fae Marines and is attracted to Callon now a lieutenant in the Marines, having to transfer there to escape his father’s manipulations.
This was a pretty sweet story except where I cried over some really bad things happening. I read it first on KU but liked it well enough to buy. Will enjoy reading this story over again!
The author got very creative with this book and it truly showed. I enjoyed getting lost in the world of fae, elves, soul mates and respective societies and beliefs.
The beginning when Gunny and Callon meet was entertaining. Gunny’s wings kept fluttering and even though he tried to resist his wings had a mind of their own.
The ‘I love yous’ from both characters came out of nowhere which kind of ruined the fun of watching them slowly come together. I was expecting more push/pull and get to know each other; but was surprised when things moved pretty fast.
I’m always looking for something a little different and this book ticked all the boxes.
*I received an advanced copy for review * That said, I really wanted to like this book, really I did. But I couldn't get past the stiffness in the dialogue. If a character can say "I'm hungry, let's go to dinner?" Why can't the same character two sentences later NOT say..."I know you are very disappointed in the selection.... since when are conjunctions illegal in fiction? It makes the characters sound stiffer than the stiffest spinster on the planet! If Harrison Phillips can go back and work on the dialogue, so that it actually reads the way people actually talk/speak, I'm all in.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A first for me from this author. Had me on the edge of my seat a few times (I'm writing this at 2:30am) and could not put it down. Only a small handful of authors do that for me. (Lisa Oliver, Mercedes Lackey and Agatha Christy) top that list. Now if our military could follow this one in acceptance, we would be all that much stronger. OK time to go before I start to babble. My advice "Get a copy, find a cozy spot and enjoy"
Loved the world created and the story was great. The characters so well described that you could hate and love them with a passion. What spoiled it for me was the use of the words prick and fuck etc etc the felt wrong sounded gratuitous and erased would not be missed. They took me out of the world created which was rich and colourful.
First time reading this author. I will be reading more of his books. I really enjoyed this book. Well written with well developed characters. Totally worth reading. Can't wait to see what this author puts out next.
Elves and Fairies. The Army and the Marines. This is a fated mates/first time love story. A fun way to spend the afternoon. Some angst. An on page rape. This is a story about overcoming genetics. And finding a found family and true love.
I liked it but be warned there is rape involved with some of some characters, but nothing explicit.
'll try to explain without too much as spoilers. The MCs marry and the father of the one MC has promised for years that he would marry this other "bad" guy. The bad guy kidnaps and drugs him saying that the MC belongs to him and takes the MC without his permission. The bad guy also takes the MCs brother who thinks he is saving the MC, not realizing he's being manipulated and while it was "offered" in one sense, it was a total manipulation and the experience was not good. The actual events were not described in any way, but were referred to as rapes in the conversations that follow. It was disturbing in that the reader knows that's what's happening and it brings up a lot of emotion for the reader because you know that what's happening isn't right, even if it is not described and that's what I wanted noted. I wouldn't want something triggered in another reader that caused them distress because they didn't know that this was part of the story line (and it late in the book, as well). It was definitely a unique and interesting world the author created and I would certainly read another book in this series and I hope that there will be more. Hope this explanation helps.
I really enjoyed the writer's wonderful imagination, but tripped on more than a few lines that made no sense until I tried replacing, eliminating or switching up some words. That bit of tripping seriously cramped my absolute immersion into the story, which I found to be wickedly enthralling and humorous. This writer clearly puts thought and planning into his storyline. I find it extremely satisfying that he tied up all loose ends by story's end, including having Durst end up being so significant to both Callon and his little brother.
I love mythology, and the fanciful idea of elves, fae, and other paranormals. Exceptional story.
The author created some cool characters. I loved the interaction between them and the story line,, From the moment of meeting Gunny & Callen spark. The surrounding cast of characters are equally rich and entertaining. I think the main villian was perfect and also added tremendously to the story. The typos, however negated some of my overall enjoyment. This read like a promising first draft but cleaning it up would have made for complete enjoyment.
This was a really good first book I have read from this author. It was not perfect but it was unique with a little of old standards mixed in. I look forward to more interesting and exciting books from him.
