Giving my virginity to a stranger was my first mistake. Lying about my age, my second. Never expecting to see Lex again, my third. He promised me one night and I took it, never expecting anything in return.
Then a few months later, I see something I shouldn’t have and fate brings us back together again.
I didn’t mean to see it and I wasn’t snooping. I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that doesn’t matter to them. I’m a liability.
Now Lex is everywhere I am. Following me, watching me, and making sure I don’t tell anyone what I saw that night.
He’s dominating, possessive, and downright controlling sometimes. He warns me of how dangerous this could be for both of us. He tells me that he doesn't want to hurt me, but he has no idea what seeing him again is doing to me.
Not when I have secrets of my own, secrets Lex isn’t ready to hear.
When all the lies are told and secrets come out, will the promises that we made in the dark be kept in the light?
**This is book five in the North Woods Series. Each book can be read as a complete standalone. Contains adult situations, and themes.**
J.L. Beck is the USA Today Best Selling author of unapologetic romance. She lives in WI with her husband, two kids, and four dogs. She enjoys writing and recently starting a literary agency to help represent authors in the industry.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙🤎💜❤️ Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙 World building: 🌏🌍🌍🌏🌎 Character development: 😠☺️😋🥰 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Dual Narration
The heroine:Jude - she escapes her home and her abusive father for one night and ends up at Northwoods University. She goes to a party and meets an older guy, loses her virginity and goes back home. Her father won’t let her attend university. He thinks women are supposed to marry, have babies and take care of their men. Though Jude wants to do something bad enough that her family will shun her, because she knows if she runs away, they will come after her and find her.
The Hero:Lex - while drinking in a bar one night, trying to figure out what to do with his life, he meets Jude. He is a former marine and sees some drunken sod manhandling her. He sees her as needing rescue and his dad raised him right, so he helps her out and takes her to his house for the night.
The Story: Lex is a gentleman and just wants to help out Jude when he meets her, but he wants her as well, so when she makes the first move, he doesn’t turn her down. They have a steamy one night stand and when he wakes up the morning she is gone. She goes back to her family in order to free herself from the cult like existence she has lived at home.
Six weeks later, Lex has decided that he has some feelings for Jude and doesn’t see her as a one night stand. He finds himself working at the local Gym with his friends Luke and Roman. After work one night, they go find a guy on the campus who has been bothering Luke’s wife, as they are beating the guy, they turn and see Jude standing there watching. Lex goes after Jude, who is scared out of her mind and suffering from PTSD. She no longer sees the gentle lover she saw that night, but a violent man.
The story is good, Lex is really a great guy and just wants Jude. He wants to take care of her and protect her and he goes back into his past and shows how he has been that kind of guy since he was a kid protecting his brothers. It was such a contrast to how Jude grew up and it was exactly what she needed. Her self esteem was so damaged, she didn’t think anyone like him would ever be or stay interested in her.
This book was told in dual points of view by a dual narration. It and was narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Ava Lucas. Teddy Hamilton is one of my favorite male narrators, he has a deep smokey voice which is always sexy and he is great at showing emotions in his narration. Ava Lucas has a soft, feminine voice which I liked, but I am not too fond of her scratchy male voice.
I really enjoyed Lex. I feel he was different from the others. Lex was really wanting to do the right thing and protect and care for Jude. There’s a bit of push pull. Mild angst level. Glad to see Jude stand up to her father. HEA.
I love a pregnancy in a book! Love it! So I like this book because of that, but I did have a few issues. I felt the book was too long. I like long books, but this book was an over-grown novella. The “jokes” weren’t really funny and I didn’t understand the side characters too much. There were also a lot of Ex Machinas
Jude (18) grew up in a cult, but I feel like that really didn’t show. I like when a character who has had an upbringing like that displays signs of it. If she really had the background that was in the book, she likely would have been a lot different and probably more timid. Other than that, she was a sweet character.
Lex (30s) was not my favorite hero. He was alpha most of the time, but then he would switch to beta for a second, it was odd. His job and life before this book wasn’t really explained, but I haven’t read the books before this and so that it probably why. He was okay, overall.
In conclusion, I would recommend if you want a read with minimal drama and quick resolutions of issues! It is a good pool read for most.
The Promise (North Woods University #5) by J.L. Beck & C. Hallman
4 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Promise is the fifth book on the North Woods University, it is written in dual POV, can be read as a standalone, but it best if is read in order. More enjoyable. The promise is the continuing story of Before The Promise were Jude and Lex first met.
I missed the North Woods University world, but I was very happy to see again Rem & Seb. Lex is their older brother.
When this two amazing authors meet, they create magic and steam. I love their style and imagination.
An ex-military man, and a young woman trying to escape her oppressive, cult-like family. Full of protectiveness, drama, and romance - another great read in the series.
Drama suspense and HEA. Jude is desperate to escape the life she has with her parents. Her only chance is to get them to disown her and kick her out. If she is no longer pure they will turn her away. Fate puts her in the path of Lex. They have one night and it’s the best night of her short life. When she disappears, Lex is a knocked off balance. Another chance meeting puts them back together. Jude has so many secrets and insecurities that it is hard for her to open up to Lex. He knows there is something bad in her past. Lex is a protector and will do anything help Jude. He will shield her from the unknown. The past has a hard time staying out if their future. Quick read that will have you smiling and tearing up.
Jude runs away from home desperately seeking freedom. Her parents, members of a cult, intend to marry her against her will. The only way that Jude can think of to avoid it is by losing her purity, so she goes to a bar to lose her virginity. But when she arrives and a drunk tries to have his way with her , she fears that she was wrong. But Lex intervenes before things get ugly. Lex offers her to take her to her home, but Jude asks him to take her to his, and there she seduced him and they spend the night together. Jude leaves while Lex is still asleep and weeks go by before they meet again. Jude attends North Woods university, her father upon learning that she was no longer pure beats her to death, but at least she can already live the life she always wanted, the life of a normal 18-year-old girl. Jude sees Lex again in strange circumstances. Lex with another man, Luke, is beating up a guy and Jude is witnessing it. She runs wash but Lex catches up to her. She fears that Lex is an aggressive man like her father, but Lex assures her that he would never lay a hand to her. He is a Marine, a protector and he swears to her that whatever happens between them, she will always be able to count on him. Luke is related to the Rossi mafia family and they recommend that he convince Jude to keep her mouth shut about what she saw. Lex convinces her to move with him for a few days so that she is safer. Jude keeps her distance with him but it is becoming increasingly difficult, especially bc he does everything he can to make her feel comfortable with him and always take good care of her. He even finds her a job in the university, thanks to his little brother who is the Dean. A short time later things start to get complicated: Jude discovers that she is pregnant and her parents return to her life to take back home and marry her anyway.
North Woods University. Standing there for a few minutes, I think about how good it is that fate brought me here. I’ve always dreamed about going to college, but my father wouldn’t allow it. “Women don’t need an education, they need to marry, cook, clean, and bear children.” That might be the life my family wants for me, but I will not have it. If I run away, they will never stop looking for me, but if I do something else… something drastic enough… they will shun me. They will kick me out and disown me as a daughter. Which is exactly what I want. They’ll disown you if you’re not a virgin.
“I promise that if you need somewhere to go, someone to protect you, I’ll be that person. I’ve spent four years serving my country, protecting people is kind of my job. I’ll protect you if that’s what you need, I’ll keep you safe.” Jude’s blue eyes become misty, and she gives me a sad smile. “Promises were meant to be broken.” “Not mine. I keep my promises. Always.”
It was all a lie. Lex is just as bad as my father. He’s violent and mean. A fraud. He made me believe in some falsehood, made me believe he was a good person, but like all the others in my life, he’s evil on the inside and nice on the out. “I don’t want to be here with you.” The words hurt as I speak them, but I don’t know this person. I thought I knew Lex, but I only knew one side of him, and I’ve been around men long enough to know there is always a darker, violent side waiting to show its face. All this time I’d wished I could find him again. Now I wish I never crossed his path again.
“When I saw those marks on your back, something broke inside of me. I promised to protect you before, told you if you needed anything, I would be there for you. Now I’m no longer telling you. I’m doing. I’m going to protect you, from everyone and everything that scares you. No one will ever hurt you again.”I know what taking care looks like. He wants me to depend on him. He wants me helpless and in need, but that’s not going to happen. I won’t fall for this. “I don’t need anyone to take care of me. I take care of myself.”
If I was ever unsure of how I felt about Jude, the doubt dissipates, and in this moment, I suddenly know what I feel is far, far more than protectiveness. But how will I ever be able to convince her that we belong together? She is so afraid, so uncertain. “I do, Jude. I mean it. I’ll swear my life on it. You’re inside of me, even if you don’t want to be, and there isn’t a damn thing I can do to shake you off.”
It is hard to trust that this is not going to blow up tomorrow. That Lex won’t get tired of me or try to tie me down or punish me if I do not do things the way he wants. It is really hard to trust. But I am starting to. How can I tell him I’m pregnant? How do I tell him that his freedom is about to come to a screeching halt? That his responsibilities will press in on him. No, I don’t know how to have that conversation with anybody. He has been so good to me, and the last thing I want is for him to feel cheated because of it.
Well it was a bit of a disappointment the story was super sweet something i dont connect the whole idea of the book was the surprise pregnancy but it's not quite like that There was an unnecessary drama towards the end that I felt it was just dragging on
J.L. and Cassandra bring North Woods University to life and man this is a place I want to go. No matter how these characters get into trouble they always fall in love and get themselves out of it. In The Promise, we get Lex and Jude's love story. Of course, we get twists and turns with some great romance with some yummy sex included.
To be honest I don't know how long the North Woods Series can keep going but I will keep reading until the very end!
I think that The Promise and The Dare are my two favorite books from the North Woods University series! I wanted to read Lex's story since he made an appearance at the first book. Jude and Lex's journey is sweet and intense. It has a nice dose of adventure combined with the appearance of the Rossi Family! I can't wait the next one!
I have been anxious for Lex’s book ever since I met him when I read The Vow, and the wait was worth it.
If accidental babies are your jam, you will love this book. Lex is ALL the things, I love him so much. It has an element of suspense to it too. Once I started, I couldn’t help but keep turning the pages. I was hooked on their story. For those that have been reading the series, you will love seeing the other characters during their HEAs.
Jude doesn’t want the life that is being thrust on her by her family so she decides to take control of her own future. While having a drink at a bar she is rescued from one man’s unwanted attentions by Lex and they spend a steamy evening together and is gone before he wakes the next morning. Her plan completed she returns home to face the aftermath and prepare for her new beginning.
After serving his country Lex has created a new life for himself and although he only spent one night with Jude he hasn’t forgotten her. When she show up in his life for a second time it was at the worst possible time and now he not only has to ensure that she doesn’t share what she saw but he also needs to find a way to keep her in his life.
I liked the evolution of Jude’s character throughout the story as well as how supportive that Lex was to her and it is always great to catch up with the other characters in this series.
Well I just read a book from these authors Hurting You (or something like that). Anyway I enjoyed it so decided to read another. It was a good pace, not overfilled with too much in depth details some authors like and I enjoyed the storyline too. It was short enough I read it in one day. So I went straight back in my kindle store to find another from this duet authors and excitedly got reading. How disappointing! It was exactly the same story but in different settings with different names! Only difference was this was one guy and that had two. The h witnesses the H commit a crime. Shes weak, frail, underfed, virgin, blonde, as thick as a plank and been living under a rock. Exactly the same story. H takes in the h to ensure she doesn’t tell anyone what she saw and well, the rest is history... repeating itself.
Oh my heart this was so beautifully written with the emotions running high, Lex and Jude are perfection she is running and Lex is there to catch her in every single way being patient and understanding.
I love the acceptance and just watching Jude learn what it is like to be normal was very heartfelt I loved these guys hard.
This my my favourite North Woods University book. JL Beck and C Hallman gave us such a protective character with Lex. He intrigued me since the Vow so when I saw his story was being written I got excited. He is by far my favourite out of the brothers. Jude is so strong. You can’t help but gravitate to her sheltered character. They have great chemistry and you just can’t help but fall in love with the two. This is a must read!
5 LEX AND JUDE STARS!! Wow, this story touched every part of my heart. Their story grabbed me from the first page and did not let go until the last word. I have missed a few books in this series and I need to read them with this one being so good.
Listened to this today and love these narrators especially Teddy Hamilton his voice was perfect. This story was so good. I loved how the twists and turns of their journey played out. Loved this story.
This was a hard one to rate. The overall plot was good. However, Jude was such a pain in the butt. she refused to ever talk about anything. I get that she was running away from a terrible life but in my personal opinion she didn't handle things well. The good news is that in the end everything works out.
This was a fast read for me, not fast paced essentially just that fact that it flows very well that you want to keep reading. It’s a fairly simple and easy plot and I really like it, I enjoy Jude & Lex very much. Love the ending!
Jude is trying to get away from her parents and do the one thing that she feels she needs to so she can break free when she meets Lex but in Lex she finds much more then she ever though possible. She finds everything that she’s been lacking in her life. This was a sweet story with a incredible hero!
They never disappoint! I love their characters and the stories each of them bring. I was pea illy love when they intermix characters from the different series. I have been waiting for Lex’s story since he was first introduced. He intrigued me. Again, they did not disappoint!
This is the 5th book in the series but it can be read as a stand-alone. Lex and Jude have a one-night stand and he can’t stop thinking about her. Jude sees something she shouldn’t have and now she is afraid of him. Will she trust him again and can he keep her safe? Fast-paced read with plenty of drama, suspense and twists and turns. I really liked the characters and their story had me hooked from beginning to end. I really liked it.
Welcome back to North Woods University, This Lex and Jude's story, There story full of emotions, drama, Sizzling HOT chemistry.I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy, Love it J.L & Cassy.
This book is fairly short and should have taken less than three days for me to read, but I've been busy and flirting with other books. *TRIGGER WARNING*: emotional and physical abuse, violence, mature content, arranged marriages, sex; not meant for every reader.
Things that I really liked: the Rossi Family crossover (feat. Luke, Roman, and Damon) with the North Woods University crew, especially the Miller crew. It was lovely and exciting to see where Rem and Jules and Seb and Lily were in their respective relationships while also featuring the Rossi Family.
I love a yummy, sexy alpha male interest, especially Lex who got his happily-ever-after finally. Lex is nothing but a model gentleman who wants to give the world to Jude. This book did a better job at establishing the Miller family backstory, not exclusive to Lex. My one complaint was that Jude ground my gears the whole book, though I really tried to like her. She didn't have a personality, which was a contrast to the fiery girls prior in the North Woods University, and she bored me out of my mind, but I admire that she finally stood up to her family. This book also perfectly set up The Jock, which I've already started reading, but I WISH there was more time spent on Jude and Blair's friendship. A couple parts were fairly predictable, but I still love the happily-ever-after.
Happy Tuesday! I hope your day is going well. And if it isn't, I hope that tomorrow or sometime soon, it gets better. Because I promise that it will get better. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but one day soon. There's a light at the end of the tunnel, and you have to keep going until you exit the tunnel. Life gets rough, but we always find peace.
Do things that make you happy, and above else, amor omnia vincent.
with love forever, Reenie 💋

DNF 50% I'm so upset about this book , It started really really good and then the h had to ruin it for me 😥 I can understand initially her behavior but then i just felt like she is using him and that hurt, because he is so protective and so good to her, i know he was a stranger and she have trust issues but at least don't use him like that. She really annoyed me and she don't deserve him,he needed to know the truth especially when her mom showed up, but nope. Then i kept reading and saw other stuffs from her behavior i hated , i don't want a h like that, leave him alone until you get your head right, then search for him, don't use him like that. The book was a short book and a fast read but i don't wanna finish it anyway.
