After five years in Los Angeles, Bron has come to terms with living as a mundane. Following a horrific ritual accident that cost the life of her mentor, she wants nothing to do with magic ever again.
That’s becoming a lot harder now that her new best friend Nick is the grandson of LA’s biggest magical crime lord.
And harder still when her mentor’s daughter shows up and drops a bombshell on The ritual accident might not have been her fault at all.
Worst of all, somebody’s stirring up the magical crime families from behind the scenes, trying to set them against each other. If that happens, Los Angeles could become a bloodbath.
As Bron navigates an increasingly dangerous landscape of demon assassins, cannibal zombies, and shocking betrayal, she’s going to need all her skills - and Nick’s - to stay alive long enough to discover the truth.

R. L. King is the author of the Amazon-bestselling urban fantasy series The Alastair Stone Chronicles.
When not doing her best to make life difficult for her characters, she works as a software technical writer for a large Silicon Valley database company.
She also freelances for Catalyst Game Labs, publisher of the popular roleplaying game Shadowrun, where she's contributed fiction and game material to numerous sourcebooks and one full-length adventure, "On the Run," which was included as part of the 2012 Origins-Award-winning "Runners' Toolkit."
Her first novel in the Shadowrun universe, "Borrowed Time," was published in Spring 2015. She's working on her second Shadowrun novel, "Veiled Extraction," which will be released in late 2016 or early 2017.
When not writing or working, she enjoys hanging out with her very understanding spouse and her small herd of cats, and watching way too much Doctor Who.
As an Alastair Stone fanatic I began this new series optimistically. The first book went okay giving the author room to grow the main characters. The second book proved less than entertaining with the primary character, Bron, a brash, sarcastic, and hypocritical female.
For those who haven’t read the Stone series one of its beloved characters is Verity. Later in the series she becomes an immature and indecisive individual. Additionally, her righteous indignation towards the magical class became a significant issue. The issue became so significant the author’s dedicated fans on social media started complaining and threatened to leave.
As mentioned, one issue was the lack of enforcement of magical ethics/laws in the Stone Universe. The author has apparently decided to move that issue over to the H&B Series. Bron who comes in contact with nefarious magical characters is continually insulting them to their face. In real life such insults wouldn’t be overlooked too long. Secondly, While Bron openly states her dislike for said nefarious characters she is more than happy to continually work with and accept their aid all the while justifying her hypocrisy as “having no choice “.
This series is hard to put down. Nick is getting to know his crime boss grandfather, & Bron has a visit from her ex-best friend, Twyla, who tells her she thinks it possible that Bron was not responsible for Twyla's mother's death. The whole reason that Bron has put magic out of her life & decided to live as a mundane, was because she thought she caused the horrific death of her mentor & her trainer. But getting to the bottom of things in their search for the truth, will not be easy & could cost them their lives. They will be dealing with the same demon responsible for the soul engine just a few months ago, of which they barely survived. Then things get complicated when Twyla disappears. The 1st book in this series was told in the first person from Nick's perspective. This second book is told by Bron. I sometimes had to re-read a section, since I would occasionally forget who the "I" was. But that just made it interesting. Looking forward to the next book.
I love RLKing and follow her assiduously, but after reading the first Happenstance book, I was a little unsure if I was that impressed. It all came together with this book however. I am now eagerly awaiting the third book. Nick and Bron have grown in my mind, and I am sure together, they will have some stunning adventures. They will never compete with Alistair Stone, though.
Loving this spin off series to the stoneiverse... I really am liking the dynamic between Nick and Bron...Happenstance is a very interesting character as well... wonder if he is a black mage? I would love to know his backstory..can’t wait for the next book!
I really loved the further adventures of Nick and Bron from Bron's perspective. It gives more insight into why she doesn't do magic. However, it does look like she will be resurrecting her talent and continuing her unfinished studies due to her recent brush with some horrific magic. 💕
Bron and Nick make a.great team! The story line is fresh and not a rehash of something that's been done over and over. I'm looking forward to seeing both Bron and Nick grow in their magical talents. This is one of my favorite new series.
I was worried that a new series wouldn’t draw me in, but I love this. We learn about what drove Bron out of magic, and what might bring her back in. I can’t wait to see where this goes!
R. L. King is a UF readers dream. How she pumps out books at the rate she does would be amazing on it's own. But the quality of her 'Stone' series is just incredible. I can't wait for the next one and I probably won't have to. 😂
Can't wait to read the next adventure of the dynamic magical duo duo, Nick and Brom have become my favorite demon fighting couple while wrestling with their budding relationship and honing their magical chops.
