He's not looking for anything serious. She doesn't do flings. But neither of them can deny the sizzling attraction between them.
Layla St. John has the talent, creativity, and drive to start her own clothing line. What the big-hearted entrepreneur lacks is the capital. So when a celebrity photographer offers to connect her with investors if she’ll let him feature her in his photography series about Caribbean carnival culture, it’s a deal she can’t refuse. But Layla can’t help being attracted to the brilliant artist. Too bad he’s her little brother’s former best friend and way too young for her.
Quincy Johnston has spent the past ten years making a name for himself as a photographer and avoiding complicated relationships. But when an impromptu trip to his small hometown, Pleasure Cove, leads to a chance encounter with the woman he's been crushing on since he was a kid, Quincy gets a taste of the deep connections he's been missing.
Can Layla and Quincy move past their relationship fears and take a chance on turning their short-term, secret fling into a shot at forever?

First of all, I loved the age difference between fashion entrepreneur, Layla St. John and celebrity photographer, Quincy Johnston. Layla fought him romantically, every step of the way, but their lucrative careers constantly brought them together. Quincy truly loved Layla and refused to take no for an answer. Once Layla realized it really didn't matter what other people thought about their relationship - it was on!!!!
Candidly Yours by Reese Ryan is a lovely romantic comedy about a woman in her forties and a man ten years her junior who happened to be her younger brother's friend in high school.
Layla knew Quincy since forever; he was her little brother's best friend in high school. But when she met him by chance at a local restaurant, she was surprised to find out he was not a young kid anymore.
Quincy lost his stutter, filled out all in the right places, and became a famous photographer. The only thing that did not change was his crush for Layla.
Layla raised her siblings after her mother passed away and worked hard to establish her bridal/ carnival costume atelier. She always liked Quincy, but she was having a hard time accepting that their age difference was not that relevant anymore.
When he invited her to take part in a documentary he was filming on the various carnival cultures around the world, she was reluctant, but could not resist accepting.
The characters are adorable. I loved the fact that Layla, like me, is in her forties. She is so centered, responsible, always putting everybody else's wishes first.
Quincy is also a sweetheart. He might not have been ready for commitment, but he was always so thoughtful and romantic.
Their love story happens mostly during a delightful trip to several carnival festivals, including locations like Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The rhythms, the food, everything emanated sensuality and appealed to the senses.
As a girl born and raised in Brazil, I really enjoyed the carnival references.
Candidly Yours is a fun and short read, perfect for an afternoon on the beach. I read it in one sit, I just could not put it down.
A once younger man who'd always had a crush on his best friends older sister was a nice story. Fast forward several years and although the pair is still twelve years apart they were now grown. Quincy had been estranged from his family for years because of his stuttering condition, and the insensitivity from his siblings. Although he'd overcome the condition to become a celebrated photographer, he still had one issue to conquer. He needed to finally admit to Layla how he felt. No spoilers.... But, you will like his final hurdle.
This book is so gooooood 😊. Layla and Quincy are so sweet and cute and sexy and definitely belong together. The differences that lay between them make for drama that I was here for.
To see the crush he had for her morph into grown folks business was beautiful and I just cried a little 😊. This book was worth all my time and I think you will enjoy as well.
Loved Layla and Quincy's story. Even tho he was ten years her junior and her little brother's best friend, they made it work. Great a visiting Pleasure Cove again.
♥️ Both the FMC and the MMC were very good protagonists. I loved each of them for various reasons.
Layla St John our FMC was a sweet, intelligent, caring woman. I loved the fact that she was a self made fashion designer. The descriptions of her outfit creations sounded absolutely lovely.
She is very family oriented to the point where she puts her needs in the back burner to help her loved ones at any cost. Layla was very relatable.
Quincy Johnston our MMC a celebrity photographer from NY, was a kind, bright young man. He is thoughtful, supportive, and extremely charming. His long standing crush for Layla was absolutely adorable.
♥️ The atmosphere of this entire novel was beautiful. From the description of the costumes, colors, music and food everything was wonderful. I truly loved the Caribbean Carnival setting.
♥️ The friends to lovers plot worked so well in this book. Layla is 10 years older than Quincy. She turning 40, while he is 30.
They have known each other for many years given that Quincy was best friends with her younger brother. Obviously this, along with inner qualms about her age make Layla a little apprehensive to start a relationship with Q. In the end it all works out for the better, and they end up in a HEA.
♥️ The spice was very gratifying. It was well done, and not distasteful in the slightest.
I really enjoyed this book. I’m so glad I picked this up, and would recommend this novel to others interested in a sweet romance. 💘
I was intrigued by the premise of this book as the characters visit some Caribbean islands for Carnival. the heroine is also doing a clothing line inspired by Carnival. I enjoyed Q and Layla's relationship. I always love an age gap romance between consenting adults when the heroine is the older one.
Speaking only for the portrayal of Trinidad Carnival (as a trini) I will say it felt like an opportunity was wasted to showcase the characters at the main Carnival event which happens on the Tuesday. We hear about them going to attend Jouvert but we never actually get this scene. we only see them at a "stush" fete. I know they were mainly there to get the photos and video for Q's project however, I wanted to see them immersed in the middle of the celebrations a bit more. But that was just my expectations as someone born and raised in Trinidad and knowing how the vibe and energy on Tuesday. It did feel like it was skimmed over but eh that's just me.
Nothing majorly inaccurate jumped out at me when describing their time in Trinidad and Carnival, although the mention of coloured mud threw me. I'm not sure if the author was speaking about the various shades of brown for the mud used at J'ouvert but uh yeah the mud isn't usually any other colour than brown. The paint is multi-coloured.
I did feel like the proposal at the end was a bit rushed but Q and Layla were cute together.
I love Reese Ryan's books, and this novella was no different. Once I read the synopsis and saw the word carnival, I knew I had to read it.
When Quincy was younger, he had a huge crush on Layla, his best friend's older sister. She was always sweet, caring, and overall supportive of him when he needed it the most. Fast forward, Quincy is a famous photographer, and he's back in his hometown.
Layla is a fashion designer and entrepreneur who designs carnival costumes for her clients. She runs into a much older and more grown Quincy, and she finds herself developing feelings that she feels she shouldn't have for him.
Both Quincy and Layla embark on a journey of travelling to different places to experience carnival, and at the same time, their feelings for each other continue to grow stronger. As they explore new cultures and traditions together, they realise that their connection goes beyond friendship and could potentially lead to something more meaningful.
I loved these characters so much. Their relationship was so sweet and sexy at the same time. Despite the fact that Layla fought her love for Quincy at every stop, she eventually got to a place where she realised that she shouldn't care what people think. What matters is what was between her and Quincy. Quincy made it known from the beginning how much he wanted Layla and did not stop making it known through his words and actions.
I loved Layla's sister, Nia. She was so funny and was a great addition to the story. I also loved that Quincy and his brothers were able to reconcile.
Quincy Johnston had me at hello 😂 I loved this story Reese Ryan amazed me with how she took what many would call aNovella and provided the readers a complete story Layla reminded me of a friend of mine who always sacrificed what she wanted to make sure that the people she loved, mainly her three siblings, had what they needed and wanted. All that begin to change when Layla and Quincy ran into each Other unexpectedly at the local restaurant. Unexpected ,because Quincy hadn’t been home in three years and the last person he expected to run into that night was the woman he had had a rush on since he was 15 years old. To his surprise being in the same space with Layla brought back those same feelings only this time it was on a grown up level.😊❤️
When I say Quincy won me over with the way he slowly and methodically Won Layla’s heart ,in spite of her concern about their age difference, while not realizing he was slowly giving his whole heart away.
This was an excellent read and I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
I didn’t love the fact that most of her memories of him were from when he was a teenager and they even mention that during this time period, she came home to raise her siblings and he was over all the time, meaning she served a motherly role to him for all his teenage years.
The age difference wouldn’t have bothered me if they met as adults, but then the story would have been way too insta-love because we sped through their situation ship into love and a relationship purely because he’d been into her for so many years, which required constantly talking about it.
Additionally, I don’t love that the book was like, men are in love if they don’t want another man being with her. Like, jealousy is not a great reason to get married if you’ve never considered marriage before.
The whole ending just felt off, and I couldn’t get over the ick either. I wish they had been much closer in age and that it just ended with them deciding to give a real relationship a try. The epilogue could have remained the same and it still would have worked.
Candidly Yours is a delicious tale of love seeded by family tragedy and triumph. Layla St. James is the big sister who dropped everything to help take care of her siblings when their mother passed. Years later, now an accomplished dressmaker, she reconnects with Quincy , an internationally renowned photographer and best friend of her younger brother. But Quincy always had a huge crush on Layla, and some things haven't changed. What has changed is they are both grown, and just maybe, Layla has a bit of a crush on the man he has become.
Layla and Quincy develop a friendship and partnership, but can it be more? Reese Ryan does an excellent job of lighting the slow burn that threatens to become an inferno. Layla and Quincy's story is a fun, mature romantic read without all the usual drama and angst found in so many of today's romances. Refreshing!
CANDIDLY YOURS is a candid look at a combination of romance tropes that makes for a very engaging story. The heroine and hero are involved in a friends-to-lovers relationship as well as a May-December situation. Layla St. John and Quincy Johnston have known each other for years. Quincy and her younger brother,Nolan, were best friends growing up. Naturally, Layla always thought of Quincy as her little brother’s childhood friend, since she is ten years older. However, as fate will have it, when they meet again in this story, Layla does not see Quincy as a young boy, but a foine grown man.
CANDIDLY YOURS is another outstanding contribution to the Carnivale Chronicles Series. I highly recommend the books in this series written by a group of talented authors. It’s a fourteen book series. What better way to help get you through this season of shelter-at-home. CANDIDLY YOURS, enjoy!
What a way to end this Carnivale Chronicles Series!! Reese did not disappoint! This was a beautiful story of Layla and Quincy, ten years her junior but the sparks flying put that on the back shelf! I loved how this story flowed! It grabbed me from the beginning and, reluctantly, before I knew it or was ready, it let me go at the end! A beautiful story as only Reese could have weaved it! If you haven’t read this, you’re missing out! You need to jump on board, grab your copy, and the others in this series, and sit back and enjoy the journey! Kudos, Reese!! 💜💜
I love the slow burn of this book. Reese did a great job introducing us to Layla and Quincy, who have known each other their whole lives, but have always had this underlying chemistry. Fast forward some years, Quincy’s in town and he and Layla reconnect again. She as the big sister of his friend, and he is wandering, award winning photographer. Add a tropical destination and event like Carnivale to the mix and you’ve got a recipe for hot nights, slow wines and some great imagery. Excellent book for a causal read.
I like Layla and Quincy's story. Layla the older family friend and Quincy her baby's brother friend. Layla is attracted to Quincy but the age difference is a problem for her. Quincy on the other hand has always been attracted to Layla . Now that he's older let's see what will happen. I enjoyed the story I love Layla's character she is unselfish, loving person. For these two age is really just a number.
I really enjoyed this book. Quincy had a crush on Layla when he was younger...years later he still has strong feelings for her. Took awhile for Layla to admit her attraction to get brother's former best friend because of the 10 year age difference...but they finally connected. Even though it was supposed to only for a short time they managed to fall in love. Loved their story!🙂🙂
This story in the series (although each book can be read as a standalone) involves Layla St. John , a clothing designer and a childhood friend of her brother, Quincy Johnson. I loved what happened throughout the story as well as the connection to Chicago and other places. The story was Reese Ryan hot and it left me ticked and also with a good feeling at the end. The author did a very good job.
I love this book!!!!! Lola got out of her own way and let love come into her life. where she has always taking care of others now she is being taken care of and actually going after her dreams to the top of the level. Quincy is an amazing man he listens to her,he respected her,he gave her space but in the same aspect he still shows that he loved her and he’s always loved her.
It was interesting to read about how non Caribbean people can still have a biased yet respectful approach to Caribbean Carnival. I think the author handled it with care. I enjoyed how the two leads became closer. Their connection felt deeper because it was more about supporting each other in their passion, rather than just being attracted to each other. They genuinely wanted the other to be happy. That's why the last plot twist felt even more realistic. Everything just felt organic and real.
Amazing love story strong chemistry and the dynamic of their jounery to their blissful of love and happiness omg was simply beautiful. Reese Ryan did her thang as always she's the best I reread this twice already definitely one of my favorite as well as many other of her wonderful books🙂
Candidly Yours was a very intriguing read. Quincy and Layla story was very romantic and spicy. It was great to revisit Pleaseant Cove and to travel to the different Carnival , it made me want to add these places to my bucket list. This story was so full of love and emotions that I teared up in a couple of places. I really enjoyed this story.
I really like the storyline of an older woman and younger man. Age has nothing to do with love as the characters found out. I enjoyed the journey they experienced. The story is sexy, funny, interwoven with family relationships, and the food descriptions are amazing. Enjoyable read.
Fun, unique story with two strong characters building up their dream careers. Low angst, and sexy too. Really enjoyed how both characters were honest about what they wanted together but made sure it was what they wanted on their own too without pressure from the other.
I absolutely loved this book. I've read all of Reese Ryan's books and this is my favorite. Layla and Quinn's journey to love was a joy to read. Looking forward to her next book.
On another note, the detail about the different carnivals through out the series was informative. I never know the history and I'm glad I read. Can't wait to go to one.
It was a fairly quick read and the story line, essentially flowed and I would definitely recommend. It did incorporate some aspect of Caribbean culture, specifically “Carnival”. However, I felt the roll out on that was generic and surface level at best, the attempt however, was appreciated.
Years ago, Quincy had a crush on Layla. Layla ignored him because he was the teen friend of her younger brother. They run into each other and Layla realises that Quincy is now fully grown. However, as adults they have lives and careers. They now have to decide if their busy lives can allow for a relationship.
This book will definitely gather a following for Reese Ryan from new and past readers alike. Candidly speaking, this book was well done. It had my interest from beginning to end.
I have enjoyed the whole Carnivale series. I really enjoyed Quincy and Layla's story of knowing each other almost all their lives and finding love together. He was everything she was looking for and proved that age ain't nothing but a number when it comes to love.
