I didn’t want to take the traditional path. First, I wasn’t ready for college. Second, I was going to live with my best friend, Tiff, and work at the Haunted House. Third, did I mention the hot guy Josh that works there too?

The most exciting thing about Austria’s new job, at a local haunted house, was the fact that the toughest looking people screamed the loudest. But when she meets the boy without a home, Josh, Austria's life takes intriguing and eventful turns. Up until now, Josh has managed to hang with his Street crowd, but they’re in danger, and so is Austria, the girl Josh recently fell for. The group finds themselves joining forces with previously considered enemies who also now find themselves in danger.

Deeply compassionate and full of twists, Altered Helix captures the struggle of polarized people that must work together for the greater good.

A first-class fantasy with perfect pacing...

Altered Helix by Stephanie Hansen is book 1 in the Altered Helix Series. I started this series at book 2, Stranded Coil and because I was so impressed by the story I decided to start from the beginning. Again, I thought this book was wonderfully written and richly descriptive. The threads of storytelling are expertly woven in this highly imaginative other world fantasy tale that had my attention from beginning to end.

I enjoyed the story, the character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystic. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class fantasy with perfect pacing.

I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Stephanie Hansen in the future. A well-deserved five stars from me.

Summary –

She never expected to find love and a brave new world at the haunted house. Rebelling against the norm is nothing new for Austria. Instead of going off to college, she chose to live with her bestie, Tiff, and work at the haunted house. There, she met Josh, a hot guy with no home. She crushes hard on Josh and her life takes an unexpected turn. Suddenly, she’s in danger and so is Josh, along with his crowd of people he hangs out with. A new world unfolds for Austria, filled with a whole new reality she never thought possible. Teaming up with old foes to combat a new enemy sounds risky but it might be the only way to survive.

Narrator’s overall voice –

Carolyn A. Lee’s voice has personality all its own but when it employs the various character voices, it takes on each character with aplomb. I thoroughly enjoyed her voice.

Does the narrator fit the characters?

Yes, Carolyn A. Lee fits the characters, especially the teens. I’m amazed how well she evokes men and guys. Very well done.

Narrator’s reading style –

Carolyn A. Lee has a reading style that is casual, nice and easy, but with plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener vested.

Narrator’s impact on reading experience –

Carolyn A. Lee has an innate ability to draw a listener/reader in without any effort. She takes what is one of the most original stories I’ve ever read and makes it come alive.

Narrator’s pacing –

Her pacing is perfect, blending action, romance, mystery, suspense, and more with ease.

Audiobook flow –

She allows the audiobook to unfold naturally with plenty of dialogue, action, romance, and everyday life.

What makes this audiobook unique –

Carolyn A. Lee and Stephanie Hansen partner up to bring readers/listeners one of the best YA books I’ve ever heard/read. The plot is fast-moving which adds to the exhilaration while listening. Her narration brings Altered Helix alive, like a movie. Brilliant from start to finish.

Would I recommend this audiobook –

YES! Don’t delay. Buy this audiobook right now.

Altered Helix is a YA Paranormal Mystery Novella that honestly gave me the old WB vibes. It's basically a teen drama series that is laced with supernatural elements and a little bit of thrilling adventure.

As is common with most novellas, there is room for the characters to be further developed and for the occurrences to be explained in more depth but I think that since this book is part of a growing series, this isn't really that big of an issue.

The story itself is very unique and interesting, and I found the characters to all be fairly likable. I definitely see potential in the series and the author has a gifted writing ability.

What a story! A great mystery.
As soon as I read the first page of the book, I could not put it down! “Altered Helix- First Novella” was written by Stephanie Hansen and it is an excellent sample of suspense. The story caught my attention from the start.
The plot revolves around the main character, a 17-year-old girl, Austria, who decides to take a different path in her life. Instead of studying a career, she chooses to live with her best friend and work in a peculiar place: The Haunted House. Austria was determined to do this despite her mother´s insistence of going to college. While working there, Austria meets Joshua, a homeless guy who will make her life change unexpectedly. Recurrent themes, such as intrigue, mystery, danger and fear kept me on the alert throughout the reading.
It is a well-written and well-developed book with dynamic and complex characters. The writer´s style is excellent; it is easy to follow the reading. Clearly, I enjoyed it very much and that is why I recommend the book.

Romance, mystery, ghosts—this story has everything!! I loved the “fantasy triller” part of the story, and I’m totally rooting for Austria and Josh!

(I’m also scared for them, actually. I feel like there are still a lot of secrets hidden in that Haunted House, and I don’t want anything bad to happen to them!)

So, yeah, if you’re a fan of YA mysteries, I definitely recommend this one!

*I was kindly given a copy of this in exchange for an honest review*
I wasn't a big fan of any of the characters. It felt like there were a lot of them and you never really got to know any of them. It felt like they were written to further the plot and not like they were actually people with their own personalities. There was nothing likeable about them and they weren't relatable in any way. They did nothing that would suggest they had a life outwith the plot or prior to the book. Ultimately this made it dull to read because you never felt for the characters and therefore didn't care what the consequences of their actions were. Everything they did felt scripted. It was really hard to read.

There wasn't any humour. I always feel bad marking down a book for a quality that I personally like but is not a necessity for a book to have so I'm giving it half marks. I would prefer if it had some to lift it and give it some more personality, but hey - that's just what I like.
The atmosphere of the book was interesting. I loved the setting of the haunted house - it was super interesting and different. I also enjoyed the seeing into the setting of a "streetkids" life. It would have had more impact if Austria was richer or hadn't experienced that kind of thing before and would have provided more drama to the plot as well as creating more interesting dynamic between the characters and their environment.

I think ultimately the writing of this book is where it fell down. If the characters had been better this could have been amazing! The plot certainly had a lot of potential to be great. But the lack-luster characters impacted on the overall intrigue and just dragged it down. Also I found it very hard to follow, it flitted between past and present without a decent separation or an indication that time was changing. The writing was also very very heavily focused on description and not much interaction between the characters which didn't the fact they already felt distant. Normally I am a fan of more descriptive or elaborate writing styles but because this was such a short book (only 89 pages) it didn't have enough of a balance to warrant so much of the book being description. This then impacted on the plot because so much of the time was spent describing and reminiscing that you didn't as much drama or intrigue from a plot that had a lot of promise. Also, I felt like there were a lot of Info-dumps in this book, but it was weird as it wasn't the typical one massive info-dump. It was more like loads of shorter ones that felt out of place either because of what they were saying or who was saying it. This was super obvious in the part with the doctor trying to explain her "special" DNA.

From the description this book sounded great. Everything I could possibly want - Romance, mystery, thriller, paranormal stuff but sadly it fell short. It felt like the book didn't know what it wanted to be so it tried to be everything and failed. There were so many sub-plots that just didn't work together or connect. Instead of the fantasy and harsh real-life elements grounding each other and adding believability they just seemed to oppose each other so much it was as if you were reading two separate stories. Also nothing seemed to happen in the book. The one dramatic thing happened at the 90% mark and was resolved in the same chapter so it again reinforced the idea that there was no consequences for the actions of the characters so it just lost all of it's impact. The end felt rushed and just erased all the things you previously had been told to be true. I really was not a fan of how it played out. If I could have picked a plot line to go with I would have stuck with the homeless/streetkid and human trafficing plot - because it was far more interesting. If you took out the supernatural element of this book it would have improved it and you wouldn't feel like anything was missing.

It was extremely predictable. Like I touched on above, because you don't relate to the characters the things that should grab you and make you excited to read on just don't work because you don't care about what happens to them and therefore you don't care about what happens in the book either. The fact all their answers felt scripted also distracts from the overall intrigue of the book because it feels fake and predictable. When "big plot events" happened the characters just come off as stupid or naive because they had already either guessed it would happen or had suggested something bad was about to happen.

I was holding out hope that the romance would be so cute that it would redeem this book slightly more for me. If anything it only degraded my opinion more. This is the worst case of Insta-Love I have ever read in my life. Half a page. In half a page the characters go from being introduced for the first time to kissing...AHHHHH!! Could there be anything more painful?? I'm not a fan of insta-love but I can cope with it if the romance develops and has enough to stand alone despite it's beginnings - this did not have this at all. On their first date she talks about potentially loving him forever, this isn't some naive thirteen year old, this girl is meant to be college age...come on now!

If you couldn't already tell...I strongly disliked this. (hate is a strong word) It was painful to read. There was no interest, it felt fake and forced and the characters were not only dull but badly written. My biggest gripe with this book however was at 21%. Austria is talking about the movie Ghost, with the famous actors Demi Moore and...Ethan Swayze. Yes, you read that right. ETHAN Swayze. I'll run through my thoughts with you. Firstly my brain goes into confusion - rereading it over and over to make sure I've not miss-read or misconstrued the sentence. I didn't. Then my brain goes to Patrick Swayze is potentially one of the biggest male heartthrob actors ever - how the author can get his name wrong is beyond me. Then it hits me, there's a character in the book called Ethan and I realise what happened. At some point Ethan must have originally been called Patrick, and for whatever reason the author decided to change his name. Instead of going through and changing it all she used the replace all button. This isn't an issue if you then proof-read your work but she obviously didn't. How am I meant to care or enjoy a book when the author clearly didn't take the same time or care in ensuring her book was of a good standard. I can forgive spelling and grammar errors as they are easier to slip through the cracks but this is just sloppy.

This was so good!! I had a hard time putting it down when I had to. But I read quickly, and not just because it was short, but it grabbed my attention from the very beginning and then I kept wanting to see what happens and what exactly was going on. I was not disappointed, and I’m really looking forward to reading the next book!!!

Altered Helix is a brilliant start to a new series. The first chapter grabs you and pulls you in, and from there it's a wild ride with twists and turns around every corner. A young adult mystery with a touch of the paranormal that anyone can enjoy as you follow along with Austria and Josh's story.

ALTERED HELIX is a short and sweet ghosty mystery thats perfect for fall. And the best part? Much of it centers around a haunted house. Not a house that’s haunted, but one of those awesome fun houses that pop up around this time of year. I don’t want to give too much away in terms of plot or what happens, so I’ll just share my thoughts. I liked the premise of the story surrounding the DNA and the mystery plays directly off of that. Austria finds herself at the center of it all when she’s involved in an accident that delivers more questions than answers. Having always known she was different, she’ll have to figure out the answers on her own because her mom won’t confide in her and her father passed away. This book has ghosts, a fun little mystery, danger, and a little romance thrown in for good measure. My only complaint is the rushed feeling this book gave me and the questions I still have about how things in this strange US work. But it’s still an enjoyable read overall and I’ll probably continue the series for when I need a quick read.

***3.5 stars***

Altered Helix focuses on a young woman who is trying to figure out how she would like to spend the rest of her life. The story takes place in almost what I would consider an alternate reality. Society is made up of people who have homes and jobs, and it seems to be normal for teenagers to be living on the streets.

Austria tries living away from her mom working at a haunted house. The group of young adults is eclectic. There are the well-to-do frat boys, the middle class, the homeless, and the owner who seems to be trying to make the world a better place.

The feel of the book was a little dark. It is told from Austria's point of view. She is trying to make sense of the world that changes in an instant for her. She finds that there is another side to her life that she was unaware of. At times I felt like her discoveries were a little bit choppy and I had a hard time transitioning from idea to idea. Over time, however, I grew accustomed to the writing style and it all came together for me. I have to admit that my interest is peaked and that I want to continue with the rest of the trilogy.

This is the first book in a series and I’ll definitely be looking for the next installment!
I’m interested to learn more about the characters and how they all fit together, and to find out more about the “altered helix” and who it affects and what it means.
My criticism would lie in that I felt the last few chapters were rushed and a little disjointed, and the writing style was hard for me fully lose myself in the story.
I enjoyed Altered Helix and I’ll be looking for book two, Stranded Coil!

Altered Helix by Stephanie Hansen 📚

My rating : 4.8/5 📚

🌻My review🌻:

📚 Altered Helix is an incredible novel written in the most beautiful words for one to read.

📚It is written by a splendid writer, Stephanie Hansen, who made me go through different emotions from being scary, loved and cry all at the same time .

📚It had 14 chapters which will not let anyone sleep but read more with each passing chapter!

📚The story revolves around a 17year old girl, namely Austria who is much more than her age.

📚She didn't want to join a college as she's uncertain on her decisions about her future and shifts with her friend Tiff who offers her a job at the haunted house.

📚Losing her father at such a young age, she and her mother haven't move on from the void.

📚The story proceeds when Austria moves with Tiff and starts her work at the Haunted House.

📚She fell in love with someone as amazing as she was named Josh who loved her to bits and could do anything for her.

📚She sees things which others couldn't,the reason of which should be kept as suspense for you to read it yourself.

📚Austria and Josh went through a lot of turmoil and faced a lot but at the end, they had each other's back and that's what stole my heart away.

📚It describes commendable work of Working together as a team and having a support system at the back.

Final thoughts 🌻:

I would highly recommend this novel to every book reader to indulge themselves into the world of Austria!

I love mysterious novels, books and series and this is one of them. If you love mystery, you will definitely love this book.
Highlighting Some Peaks, the story is full of Twists & Turns right from the first chapter, which made me to complete it in One Go..

Story revolves around a 17 year old Austria which is a main character. The girl tries to take a different path from the usual. Instead of going to college, she decided to live with her best friend and work in a very different place. THE HAUNTED HOUSE. She meets a homeless boy Joshua while working at The Haunted House whose presence brings unexpected turns in her life.

The book also acknowledge with a direction to deal in many daily life Situations like Overcome Fear, Relationships, Uncertainty, And A positive Approach of Life, Infact the Style of Writer Is So effect , it made to skip my Netflix Current Series

As this is a Thriller edition and probably became my favourite these days, I don't want to be a spoiler and break any suspense. I am recommending this book to all the book lovers and mystery lovers out there. Go and read it!

Being in Isolation was a very difficult task but the books made it really easy for me to isolate from the world and get into a new one. A new world where these books took me, here is one of those books called "Altered Helix: Novella One" starting with the title of the book, it's a simple basic and a totally relevant one. The cover of the book is quite basic but attractive.
Talking about the plot of the book, This is a world novel that has collapsed and now most people live on the street, some people with a privileged DNA that helps them to have an amazing way of healing, and everyone seems to be searching for them, mainly to steal the DNA. The main character is Austria, a young woman who lost her father and inherited his privileged DNA. The book's romance section was better than what you'd expect in a YA novel. I assume that's because they were very well-written characters. The author really made me want to continue to see their relationships and lifestyles, from Austria to Jacob to Tiff to the street kids. I loved the experience this book gave me and I would definitely recommend it to all the readers out there. I am looking forward to read the next book in this series as there are still mysteries left to be solved.

Great book, it's like a thrill ride with depth and twists and turns I never saw coming.

This is not your average cookie-cutter YA novel. It may seem so, with a girl working at a Haunted House and the hot boy she is crushing on, but it is so much more than that. I won't spoil it for you because I highly recommend you read it. The author's creativity is outstanding. I can't wait for books 2 and 3 in this series.

So I bought this book for my 17 year old daughter, but decided to read the first chapter first. Well...before I knew it I was halfway through the book. Yes, it's that good.

For me this book had a similar feel to Stephen's King Joyland, which is a book I love. But then it's also got a young adult dystopian vibe as well as romance and mystery. It really is a phenomenal cross-genre story that anyone could enjoy. It was just a really unique and creative story!

For such a short book, I felt the characters were very well-developed. The writing was descriptive enough to give you a picture of the world of the story, but it never dragged. Hansen kept the story moving quickly and I couldn't help but keep turning the page.

I'm for sure reading the next two before I hand them off to my daughter and I hope this author writes more.

I felt Altered Helix was confusing the first couple pages, but it all started to come together, I am so glad I continued to read this novel. Stephanie Hansen creates an eerie plot in a haunted house. This novel has that added thrill you would anticipate in a haunted house. Around every corner or page there is danger or an unexpected twist. This is a story that will give you chills and cause you to peer into dark corners.

This was an enjoyable read. I thought the plot was very unique and I was eager to find out what happened to the main characters. Most of the characters were likeable except for the ones who my opinion of changed by the end of the novella. The YA mystery was intriguing and it was made even more enjoyable with the supernatural aspect of it.

A theme of this book is teens working in a haunted house which is a perfect setting for this time of year. I still feel there is so much more to be discovered within the haunted house and I am excited to read the rest of the series. As I said before, this plot was unique and I thought all the themes in this book came together perfectly.

Austria, the main character, firstly has a great name! Secondly, I thought she was someone who is determined to find out more about herself and her family. She has some weird things happening around her and I thought she deals with them very maturely. Austria and Josh, another main character, form a relationship which is so sweet. Although, I did think this romance happened quite quickly, I would have liked to have seen more of their relationship developing. However, this is a novella so there wasn’t too much space to explore everything. I’m sure we will see more of the relationship in the rest of the series.

This book was definitely an easy read and it was quick to read. I would definitely recommend this to those who like supernatural books or those who are looking to get into that genre.

Altered Helix is a well crafted and engaging read with a highly likeable cast of characters, It is definitely better suited to being a novel rather than a novella, as it would give the author more chance to flesh out the extraordinary world they appear to have created.

Altered Helix by Stephanie Hansen is a fast paced, coming of age mystery where the life of one teen becomes intertwined with a group of similarly aged young adults. Join Austria as she learns more about where she came from and what life has in store for her.

Readers will enjoy the twists and turns of this quickly pivoting plot, at once drawn in by a sneak peek of the main character’s face with danger: being kidnapped from her job. The author introduces a variety of characters and the reader is left wondering who might be responsible for the kidnapping, who can be trusted and who cannot.
The plot is amazingly easy to follow and moves quickly so readers are always awaiting the next event. The situations the characters are in are believable as related to the plot line and anyone who has wondered what to do with their futures will instantly relate to Austria, the main character.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. While Austria is a character well developed by the author there are some interactions between characters that did not seem realistic. Early in the book Austria first meets one of the other boys her age. She is instantly attracted to him, but her reaction is quick to judge. Pg. 21: “Well signed up for or not, Joshua excites me. I just need to show him that I make the decisions here.”
Hansen has set this story up with a nice conclusion in addition to leaving enough ends open to incite you to read the next story in the series. I do look forward to reading about Austria and how she continues to develop.

Altered Helix was an interesting novella that had me hooked from the beginning.

I found all of the characters to be intriguing and I loved the fact that the story took place at a haunted house.

The moments between Austria and Josh were very cute. I really enjoyed watching them interact with each other.

There were several twists that i never saw coming. The last part of the story made me go huh?

I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I was completely catapulted into Altered Helix by Stephanie's cast of well-developed characters and her well-crafted settings. I truly can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series!

This novella is the perfect start to the series. It is intriguing and introduces you to the characters. The novella itself is a beautiful book. The cover is teal and black with artist writing. The novella is also much smaller than a normal book and would fit perfectly in your purse or pocket. I loved the story about kids from different backgrounds working together at a haunted house. I read the book around Halloween, so it was the perfect setting. The book ends in a way that makes you want to find the next book to read right away. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series holds!
