After watching and loving Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, I want to check out the comics. This is hard to find so I'm hoping they reprint it soon!
You probably know Batman and Superman, but do you know there sons Damian and Jon? In the Supersons omnibus from Peter J. Tomasi, Jorge Jimenez and Patrick Gleason, we get to meet the kids of Supes and bats. A omnibus that i missed out on the first time, but recently got as it was released as a expanded edition. The artwork and colors are fantastic, and i already knew from Tomasi and Gleason they have a great knack for Damian Wayne, as i read the Batman and Robin omnibus they did together. This run is lighthearded and fun, with alot of short stories with all kinds of crazy stuff. Jon is the boyscout, who always sees the good in people, while Damian is like Batman always brooding and kicking butt and being a pessimist. We see them around the Titans, The Justice League, intergalactic travels, a Tim Drake from the future they have to fight, and just two super Kids bonding and making there own way to become superhero's. Just plain old fun!!
This is really a culmination of what could have been. I wanted this collection so badly because the Tomasi Superman run was so good. This book, less so. It starts off great, lots of good art, fun stories, and then just kind of gets lost in itself. Art gets worse. stories get more, meh. It's not bad, but if the Tomasi Superman is like a 4.5, this is like a 3 exactly, or a 2.9 rounded up.
Jimenez kills it in here, like he always does. It needed WAY more of him. And way less of a few other artists, because a couple of them are just outright not good...
What can I say? This was a fun, funny and endearing take on friendship. Take two polar opposite personalities and throw them into multiple adventures and see their bond grow. There are multiple short stories with one main overall story arc that spans most of the book. It was a very delightful, quick read and a great palate cleanser after reading some much more darker and emotionally heavy stories.
Another great omni to round out the combined run I've been reading through. Only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was because it was just slightly less enjoyable than Superman. Not because of the characters or the dynamic which was phenomenal and more of the same which we see snippets of in the previous omni, but more just because of some of the antagonists and supporting characters felt a little bit meh
Overall though the side stories were fun and enjoyable to read through but I felt like it got a bit bogged down by the last arc which dragged on a little featuring Rex Luthor and his band of copycat villains. I get the idea of them having slightly weaker versions of their dads villains but the gimmick just went on a bit long imo. But it was still and easy read and page turner which kept me wanting more and had some emotional parts to it which made it sad to see it end (especially knowing what comes next).
Basically perfect. Silly, fun, funny, endearing. It's all about friendship and family all mixed within great adventures. Sincere jokes, not forced.
SECOND READ: I read the updated version with one (or two?) more trades in it and it only made it better. The fun never stopped. Would recommend to everyone to read, all ages, but not only written for children.
This is a strong 4 just by half of th book alone. I upgraded from the prvious version so the first half was more nostalgic for me when reading it the first time again. and the second half will have to charm me once I sit down and read this again in the future.
I wasn't sure if I was gonna like this book but it was actually a blast to read, bickering between Damian & Jon at tiresome at times. Overall it's a good book.
After inhaling the first trade, I realized this series was a perfect fit for me and I had to have all of it. This was my first omnibus and I got more than my money’s worth.
I’ve adored everything I’ve read by Tomasi and had a blast from cover to cover. I was really impressed by how well the various arcs tied together and each adventure built off of the last.
I thought the art ranged from pretty good to amazing, and it felt a bit more consistent in quality compared to the Superman run that preceded this.
Overall, I can safely say this is probably one of if not my favorite comic series to date and I expect the omnibus will get much more use in good time!
The interplay between the two leads and their characterizations is simply wonderful. The serious and the light hearted, the light and the dark, the eternal optimist and the pragmatic realist. I could watch them banter and rib each other all day, which is fortunate, because that’s pretty much all they do. After the first arc, which is solid, it seems like they are mostly treading water or going around in circles. Still had a ton of fun reading it. Def going to give Tomasi’s other stuff a look next.
An incredible, and honestly necessary, recommendation for any Super Sons fan. This is comics done right. The storylines, the challenges, and the emotional growth are carefully built to honor Damian and Jon both as a team and as individuals. They are legacy characters, but they are never reduced to shadows of their parents. They have their own names, their own goals, their own methods, and their own ambitions. These two will forever hold a huge place in my heart. I owe them for being the gateway that fully pulled me into the DC universe and, especially, into the Batfamily.
I really enjoyed this! Exciting, fun stories with well delineated characters, all drawn with excitement and seeming ease. An absolute pleasure from start to finish.
Solid but unspectacular. Fast read. Good chemistry between the two leads. Stories could get juvenile at times, but this is clearly directed at a younger audience.
So good... both kids are written so well. From hating each other to loving one another, they grow into brotherhood as they face some tough battles. We see the Teen Titans, future Tim Drake, Dynomutt and many more on their adventures. The Rex storyline was not my cup of tea but overall I enjoyed this omnibus. Love these guys at this age together.
