The Good, the Bad, and the Very Slimy It’s Slug race night in the Student Center. Bernie has his slug Sluggo. Sherman’s brought his silver slug. Joe Sweeney, and Wes Updood have also brought slugs. Since Sluggo’s won the last five races Bernie brags to Sherman that she’s leave his new slug in the dust. But Sherman has a secret weapon-raw hamburger meat that’s gone bad-. It smells horribleand Fenman and Crench want it gone but Sherman says it’s spoiled SIRLOIN-nothing but the best for Godzilla-. The guys each take out five dollars and line up their six slugs. Bernie calls out “Ready and Set” but before he can get to “Go” Mrs. Heinie burst into the room and demands to know what they’re doing. The guys quickly hide their slugs. Bernie holds up the meat and tells her their doing homework for their unit Mysteries of Science. She’s not buying this and tells Bernie she has her eye on him. They post-phone the race for next Tuesday.
The room smells so foul they all ran out. Beast stays behind to eat the meat-even tho it has maggots in it-, Bernie sees Jennifer and finds out she’s been telling people that he begged her to be her date for a dance coming up at the Student Center. Bernie tells his friends he’ll handle it. Bernie interrupts April-May and Sharonda’s ping pong game. He tells April he know she wants to ask him to the dance but she’s just shy. April tells him no way. She needs someone like Sherman (smart, dependable, rich). She flat out calls Bernie a loser and tells him any day now he’ll be kicked out of school. That very moment Bernie decides to change.
Bernie makes a deal with April that if he can be a better student than Sherman and stay out of trouble for a week then she’ll go to the dance with him. April is like Suuuure! Bernie is so excited he tosses up the ping pong ball he’s been keeping April from getting and …… swallows it. Bernie sees that Belzer has his hand stuck in the candy machine and puts in a dollar to make it release him. He tells him he won’t make him pay him back until he gets his allowance and he actually thinks he’s doing Belzer a “good deed”. Then the machine goes crazy and starts dropping candy bars. They start grabbing them so they can sell them to the second graders for a dollar.
Sherman is on his way back to his dorm admring the night and loving boarding school when Sherman runs him over with his bike (that has a DVD player, two speakers, gold handle bars and a seat made from a chicks skin). Sherman says he’s on the way back to study for a history test and he’s going to make the best grade. Bernie tells him no. He is and he’s going to take April-May to the dance. Sherman just laughs at this and says he’ll be the one taking April to the dance. Then they declare war!
Bernie is knocked down again. This time by Jennifer. She asks are they going to the party but he tells her he’s going with April. She twists his arm behind his back and tells him no way and she’ll be waiting when April comes with someone else. Now Bernie knows he has to be the better student than Sherman. He even discovers the library. How did *that* get there? While he’s studying, his friends come in and tell him there’s a pool game happening and Sherman has a device that helps him track and not miss a ball. He has to come and show him up. But April is there and he sends them away and tells them he has to study.
In order to impress April-May Bernie does what he does best-come up with schemes-. He scatters trash all over the yard and acts like he’s picking it up in front of her. Then he picks up NoseBleed and says he has to rush him to the hospital. Only his nose isn’t bleeding. Bernie is so dumb that he says IN FRONT OF HER “What’s wrong with you? Bleed for her.”
Bernie runs into friends of Sherman’s (twins) Flora and Fawna at the workout center. Sherman is noticeably missing and he’s known to come there before a test. Flora and Fawna say he does this secret thing that always gets him perfect scores. Bernie bribes them with 12 candy bars a piece and they say he wraps a very hot towl around his head and that stimulates his brain quicker. Bernie does this but the nurse comes in (called by Sherman) and sees his head is red and that he’s burning up. He gets sent to the infirmary.
Bernie finds out Sherman and Flora are entering the Double Smart Bowl and decides it’s a better way to get April to go to the party with him than a history test. Berni chooses “Billy the Brain” who has a solid C average. Bernie is again studying when his friends interrupt him and tell him Sherman has started a slug race early and.. he’s insulted “Sluggo”. Them’s be fighting words and he’s outta there. All thoughts of “being good” aside. When he gets there Sherman has a new Chinese razor slug. They’re about to start the race when Sherman’s conscious gets the better of him and he says he has to go study. Then they’re barged on by Mrs. Heinie again.
Bernie tells her they’re there trying to come up with something shiny to get her for her birthday. (Because she makes their lives shine). She buys it and about to leave but Bernie jumps up and she notices his fist. She sees that they’re all cold and slimy and sends him to the nurse’s office. Therefore, he’ll miss out on the Double-Smart Bowl. After he’s released he sees April-May and she tells him because he screwed up she’ll be going to the dance with Sherman. He asks her to give him one more day.
He almost trips over the hose and the gardener tells him to be careful. The hose is so powerful it can knock you into a wall. He gets an idea, sees Sherman, and goes over to him. He tells Sherman the principal wants him to test the hose and he tricks him so he winds up spraying Principal Upchuck. April says a deal is a deal. She’ll go with him to the dance. Just then Bernie’s friends come up and tell him Mrs. Heinie wants to see him. He’s in trouble.
Mrs. Heinie says she knows Bernie’s up to something. She caught him in the library and he wasn’t playing pool with his friends. She grounds him for a week to stop his plans. So, he’s not able to go to the party after all. April-May goes to the dance with Sherman and decides she likes bad boys now. Jennifer tells him not to worry about they’ll have the next dance and the one after and the one after.
My Thoughts: This was kind of interestingly sarcastic because it shows that people don’t really change. It shows that when a guy is interested in you and trying to get with you he *will* change for a hot minute and try to do the right thing. It shows how far they’ll go. But if you notice Bernie never really changed. He studied. Will give him credit for that, BUT.. he tried to win her with deception. He PRETENDED like he was cleaning up the yard. He PRETENDED like Nosebleed had a nose bleed to MANIPULATE her into thinking he’s sensitive and cars about his friends. He didn’t help Belzer get his hand out the snack machine because he was a “good friend”. He did it to get a dollar out of him. He used the candy to go up on the price to scam third graders. So, April-May was right that he only cares about money. He’s definitely a user! Maybe that’s why things never go right for him by the end of the book. Not that Sherman is any better. As a matter of fact, all these characters are kind of terrible.
Rating: 5 This gives a GOOD lesson about how males will say anything to get with a girl they like. And you should probably take it with a grain of salt until they prove themselves otherwise. I’m not even sure why April agreed to go to the dance with him. Bernie really didn’t prove *anything*. He didn’t prove that he was smart or that in any way was he better than Sherman. In an ironic was he’s probably worse than Sherman. Sherman might be an arrogant braggard but Bernie is a manipulator and a liar.

What I liked about The Good, the Bad and the Very Slimy by R. L. Stine is that it showed how much Bernie changed for April May. For example, he went without trouble for a whole week and it also showed how much people doubted him. For example April May pretty much said that he went without trouble for a whole is like her flying to Miami. Even Mrs. Heinie doubts him and says that he's planning something evil because he's been good for a week. What I didn't like is the ending to it when Mrs. Heinie comes and yells at Bernie even though he does nothing and she even grounds him. That is what i liked and didn't like about the The Good, the Bad and the Very Slimy by R. L. I recommend this book to 4th graders and people who like goofy stories.

Y’all, I’m in between reads and throwing some goofy throwback fillers in the mix. I’ve been on my R.L. Stine kick lately. I read these originally when I was younger, so just rereading the Rotten School series again. Obviously not exactly my usual read or level of reading, so I don’t have anything bad to say about the series or the book in general!
This book follows Bernie Bridges as he tries to stay good for a whole week. Bernie wants to take April-May June to the school dance, but she only agreed to go with Bernie if he can stay out of trouble and become the best student.
Follow along as Bernie avoids racing slugs with his friends, all night card games to win money, and even studies to prove he has what it takes to be the best date for April-May! It’s a fun read that’s full of funny drawings throughout that make it even more unique. I’d definitely recommend this series and this book if you like R.L Stine!
I read the good, the bad, and the very slimy by R. I. Stine. The main characters are Bernie. Bernie wants April –may June to go to the dance with him Bernie has to be good for a whole week. As you are probably thinking he is a troublemaker .Bernie tries his best to be good, but he does not go to the dance with April -May June .this is why he does not go to the dance with April- May June.
Bernie does not get to go to the dance with April-may June because Sherman oaks the rich guy keeps making Bernie look bad in front of April –may June. Bernie gets tired of Sherman making him look bad in front of April-may June so Bernie decides to get revenge. Bernie grabbed the water hose which is high power Sherman happens to pass by at the time. Bernie gives the hose to Sherman and tells him to shoot the man in a red cap. Bernie goes inside and tells the principal that’s there’s something wrong outside .Bernie tells the principal that he needs to wear a red cap. The principle gets shoot with water by Sherman. April-may June says yes to Bernie. Then the door keeper figures that something is wired about Bernie because he has been acting well. Bernie gets grounded and does not get to go to the dance.

The Good, The Bad, and The Very Slimy is about this very popular kid named Bernie B and he and his friends live in a boarding school. Bernie is in love with a girl named April May June, but she dosent like how he acts. Bernie's main external conflict is that he has his huge girl that like's him, but he dosen't, he promised that he would go to the prom with her but he is probaly going with April. Bernie's main internal conflict is that he has to change how he acts if he wants April to go to the prom with him, but will his best friends like the way he starts acting?
During reading this book I made a Text-to-Self connection. Bernie's internal conflict reminds me of when my mom told me to change to way I act if I wants her to do stuff for me, or let me do certian things. But my friends were wondering why I was acting so nice, they didnt like it. We both have to change the way we act if we want good things to happen.
I would give this book four stars. i give it four stars becuase it was funny but then it got boring and it made me uninterested. Also it's clever, and I love how Bernie acts. I would recommened this book to people who loved to act stupid and goofy a lot.
With all the vampire craze that occurred around 2005, the Rotten School didn't get the attention that it deserved. The series had a total of 16 books and ended in 2008, right around the time the Goosebumps series was relaunched. Unlike most of R.L. Stine's writings, Rotten School was a slapstick comedy that was set in a private school. Each book was about 100 pages and featured illustrations by Trip Park. Additionally, there was one page of stickers in the back of each hardcover edition. Overall, reading Rotten School: The Good, the Bad and the Very Slimy was better the second time around. I had completely forgotten about he main plot, which had Bernie trying his best to be good for one week. What's does the "Slimy" in the title stand for? Well, there happens to be a slug race!
This appealed to my son when he was at the end of third grade, but it's really just stupid useless crap that, again, appeals to kids because it's readable and it has enough disgusting content to make children feel like it's contraband. If you believe in the theory that at a young age it's important for kids to practice reading ANYTHING, this is a fine selection for a boy. It just leaves you with absolutely nothing to think or talk about, but I'm sure it's harmless (save for the time wasted that could have been spent reading something with more quality).
At first I thought that it was too babyish for me, but when I went to the third page I found out that it was pretty funny and enjoyable for even adults who are having a bad day and want to stress out and have a great time if it is rain or if their is a huge storm coming.
I just want to say that it is really awesome to read it because you may have memories of when you were in fourth grade and didn't know what you were doing.
Another book that is part of my flashback series! I really did not enjoy this book as it was slower than the first two as in getting to its main plot, and such. It took about 83 pages to get to the rising action, and I am not surprised. When you are alot older you see the flaws in such books like these, and when your younger you enjoy them! I currently have 13 books left to read from this series!
I liked the book but I really wished that April-May would have went to the dance with Bernie at the end. Also Bernie was supposed to be doing good things the whole week. But instead he was just doing good things infront of April-May, so in a way he deserves not going to the dance with her.
The Good The Bad and the very Slimy is a funny book because it's about a boy named Bernie Bridges and he needed a date for the dance. So he asked his dream girl if she would go with him. April-May June said if he would stay out of trouble for a week. But he didn't.
In this book of rotten school bernie trys to impress a girl he likes named april may so she can go out with him to a school dance but she wont go out with him until he changes his behavior
