The hero known as Iron Head has brought peace to a world plagued by superheroes, confining their battles to arenas in WWE-style matches. As he dies, he passes control of his foundation to his daughter, Alexia Ross.

Alexia has super strength, but would rather help people in the street than become a star in the gladiatorial bouts. Unfortunately, she lacks the confidence to cross her father's wishes. Enter the Black Hand, a young woman with mental powers who feels Iron Head has wronged her by jailing her mother and denying her rightful legacy. The two immediately clash, but hey, this is comics, so of course they're forced to work together to find out who is stealing from Iron Hand's well-endowed foundation. So . . .

She's innocent, naive, and White. She's angry, determined and Black. Together, they're detectives.

Bickering, fighting and explosions ensue.

It's supposed to be action-packed and humorous, but I was bored.

I notice that the book has not only a translator but a "script tutor" and five people credited with "adaptation for the American audience." I'd like to know what that exactly entailed, and how all those cooks contributed to this weak broth.

Hmmm… A book that unfortunately doesn't manage to do what it set out to do. We see two young women, one black one white, one skinny one chunky, one angry one er, angrier, and the plot has the two find out that the superhero world they live in is built on lies. Everyone is supposed to think the world is a utopia, with no crime and no evil, with the supes forced to combat each other in a giant form of cage fighting just to stop them twiddling their thumbs – the only thing is, even if that picture is accurate, it was drawn at some cost, as these heroines will discover. The landscape format was certainly fresh and made for a well-designed book, and I guess was the result of the original of this being a web-comic for laptop use and not mobiles. But there are flaws in a few instances – the action scenes aren't good, the world-building is weak as we see neither the televised cage fighting nor the full extent of what some secondary characters are supposed to do, and the whole thing is far too wordy for its own good, descending into a yack-fest when all it has ever wanted was to show combat and antagonism. (Which, according to the notice on the door upon entry, was – as you'll no doubt remember – non-existent.) If the creators had managed a show-don't-tell spell where we could see what the whole world was like and what Alexia's issues with it really were, then this could have been novel. As it is, it's a disappointment.

This is my first series by López as part of the Panel Syndicate project.
I really liked the heavy inkwork, darker color scheme, and daring young women in this post-superhero story.
However, I was less of a fan of how unlikeable Blackhand was in the earlier parts of the story. Her general lack of empathy towards Ironhead's situation along with her hot temper did little to sympathise her to the reader. In the later issues it becomes clear why she behaves the way she does and why she has so little trust for Ironhead's family but she's still not a very likeable character.. and I know we are meant to sympathise with her based on the way the narrative is structured, so that feels like a bit of a failing on López's part.
I also feel that, whilst it was hinted at, the series never really addresses that many of the themes (corrupt incarceration, systematic oppression, demonizing) echo the systematic inequalities faced by the black community of which Blackhand is apart. Maybe I'm being really dim and that was the whole point of the series, and the superhero-villain thing was a metaphor. You know what? I'm gonna go with that interpretation, it actually makes me like it a little more.
Regardless, this is a well-drawn, action-packed little series with two interesting protagonists that is definitely worth looking at given it's 'name-you-price'.

This was a kind of, hit the ground running kind of comic. Lots of action. I enjoyed it and I look forward to getting to know these gals in season two.

Obviously there are exceptions, but this is much what one expects when an artist turns writer-artist, in that it looks lovely but the story is more than a little familiar. Superheroes have stopped fighting in the streets, because all the evil is vanquished – isn't it? Instead they're celebrities, their battles become sport (which, curiously, we never really see). The protagonist is the daughter of one of the greats, but she's being moulded into something more media friendly even as she wants to do something more to improve the world. And then the long-lost half-sister turns up...I've seen it all before, and you probably have too. The secrets and revelations which follow are unsurprising when they're not unclear, but David Lopez' art retains the appeal his script lacks, the two leads in particular suggesting Erica Henderson characters who've gone a bit off the rails.

I bought this based on a few pages of previews and the excellent graphic design those pages showed. And the book delivers on the pencils, inks, and colors. López draws exciting action scenes with great character designs, fascinating superhero props, and interesting backgrounds.

But the story doesn't work in so many ways. Characters are undermotivated or cliche, scenes shift with little logic, and the whole thing needs a slower or clearer touch. If you're going to tell a story about how "everything changes", you need some time on the before if the after is going to have any emotional impact, and López is not taking that time.

I would love to see López's art in service of a tighter story, but - based on this volume - I'm not interested in reading more of his writing.

I am in love with this art style, if I could I would marry it. I loved the designs of the characters, I am absolutely raving about Blackhand's wardrobe, I love how Ironhead is this super tall, super muscular powerhouse of a woman, I just love it. I like the plot too. It's woke without being in your face with it. Like, it doesn't hit you over the head until you get what they're trying to say. I appreciate when a comic book respects your intelligence. Absolutely loved it.

I loved this fun romp! It exists in a post-superhero and villain world, but it is a facade Lots of twists to justify the characters staying together. I liked the pace. Great coloring. The character design was a little too literal and cliched. There is a scene in issue five that seemed to wrap up too cleanly. I would like to see where the story goes now.
The motion in the art is good, but fights can get confusing. I loved the colors used.

Whoa! Alexia is the heir to a foundation, a foundation that her father started to broker peace between superheroes and supervillains by letting them fight in sanctioned bouts. But when Alexia's dad dies she'll learn that the foundation isn't what it appears to be.

What I hoped would be a cool take on family superhero drama turned out to be bland and lifeless. The characters were all pretty cliched and never developed into anything. I enjoyed the oversized format of the book but left disappointed. Overall, a generic book that's been done to death.

|| BLACKHAND & IRONHEAD ||

Read an ARC provided (with much gratitude) by Edelweiss+. I think there are a lot of good ideas introduced here (the "odd couple/sisters" that are the main characters, Alexia not being your typical stick-figure hero) but the execution doesn't always match it (Amy, Alexia's unknown sister, sometimes reads to me as stereotypically black) and the overall plot for me feels a bit rote. Still, I liked the art style and there are some interesting things set up to build on in the future if this story continues on.

Simple tale of super-powered girls and surprises - enjoyable enough

Alexia has super strength, inherited from her father, in a world of powered heroes and villains. She finds out that she has a sister and then her world falls apart as it is impossible to know who to trust. The plot moves along at a good pace and the whole thing has interesting twists and turns. The artwork is simple enough and straightforward. It's a easy and enjoyable read.

Plot moves quickly and easily, and I enjoyed the art style. However, although I understand our plus sized superhero main character wanting to lose weight is a part of her story arc, I wish it wasn’t so heavy handed. Definitely a trigger if the reader struggles with ED.
