Overall, a pleasant jaunt through the characters’ unpleasant week. This one is from the Protected Identities series, and it’s interesting to see the difference with witness protection in Canada vs. the US (instead of marshals, they have RCMP, etc).

Travis has settled in and been living in peace with rooms over his landlady’s bookshop. Nothing seems to have gone amiss until his former partner calls to ask for his help—and before anything else can happen, before Jessica can even reach town, a man in a puffy protective suit attacks his landlady and then him. Is it connected?

I enjoyed the read and didn’t lose interest. I found a number of things that happened stretched the realm of possibility (jumping out of a helicopter and tossing kids out of a helicopter, etc) but at times the action moved so fast it felt like the author forgot to include details to describe the scene very well. Also there were some inconsistencies that pulled me out of the story, such as the hero having literally gone to therapy over a coffee addiction and pledged never to drink it again, but then the heroine smelling his “familiar coffee scent.”

I’ll definitely be reading more of this series.

Maggie K. Black delivers another edge-of-your-seat thrill of a read. Lots of drama, tons of danger and even a bit of the fantastical in true action thriller form. Reunion romance, cute kids (little Willow steals the show!) and a kick butt RCMP detective heroine who always gets her man...in this case both personally and professionally. :-) It doesn't get much better than this.

I love these kinds of books but I can’t stand when they overly unrealistic. If you are in Witness Protection you have ZERO contact with your old life. A former partner would not be able to simply call you and ask for your help on a case. That just simply wouldn’t happen.

"Witness Protection Unraveled" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. I believe it's the third in a series, but it works as a stand-alone. Travis was once an undercover detective, but now he's in witness protection and has built a life which includes helping care for two orphaned children. His former partner arrives to tell him that she's going undercover to stop the man who put a price on his head so that Travis can leave witness protection. Will he help her? He doesn't want to leave the life he's built for himself, but someone attacks the children's grandmother and targets the children. Travis and Jess work together to solve the case while trying to not blow their cover.

Travis and Jess respected each other, and they worked well together. Jess had to get used to the idea that he's not going to be a detective in the future even if she nabs the bad guy. They've loved each other for a long time, but they don't see how a relationship can work out. The suspense came from the bad guys targeting the children and attacking Travis and Jess. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting novel.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Witness Protection Unraveled was a nice change from typical Love Inspired reads. I liked how the hero was in WITSEC and, even though it might put him at risk, he helps protect two children whose grandmother was attacked.

He was a nice main character and I really liked his former partner, Jessica. She was tough and nearly fearless.

All in all, this was a good read. I liked it and look forward to more stories from Black.

My Thoughts on “Witness Protection Unraveled” by Maggie K. Black

Suggested Beverage Pairing: Decaffeinated Herbal Tea

Characterization

Travis Stone has made it through a lot of personal changes in the time he’s been in witness protection. His name, his location, his backstory, his personal habits, and most importantly, his faith. He has found community and family in an unlikely circumstance.

Travis shows what sacrificial love looks like time after time. He is willing to give of himself for the betterment of those he loves and the general public around him. He focuses on provided stability and loving environments for those in his circle.

Jessica Eddington is about to go undercover again and she wants her partner back. Yes, he’s in witness protection, but that doesn’t mean she can’t convince him to join the team. She needs him.

Jess doesn’t expect to find Travis has taken on two children and their grandmother. Can she convince him to leave the small town, the family, and return to his old life?

Jess and her teammate Seth stay to help solve the mystery of the “Shiny Man” before they head back to their undercover mission. Things get majorly messed up when Jess blows her cover trying to deal with the “Shiny Man.”

Not only is she now off her case, she’s also going to have to give up Travis again.

The Plot

I could not put this book down. As in I read it cover to cover and stayed up well past midnight on the one night I had to get up and *work* at a specific time early the next morning.

I had to know, though.

If you enjoy suspense novels, you will enjoy this book.

From undercover detectives to witness protection to taking on two children orphaned by police officer parents, there is something around every corner.

When the HEA didn’t come at the time I expected it, I was disappointed. However, as is promised in Love Inspired imprints, the HEA does come.

This plot involves a small town community that has no idea they are harboring an undercover detective in witness protection. There are members of the community who love Travis, and members of the community who hold him in disregard.

However, in keeping with the positive characteristics of his prior life, Travis does everything he can to protect all who are within his circle. In addition, he finds he enjoys a slower paced life and his newfound faith. He does miss Jess, though.

And when Jess comes busting back in to town at the exact moment the “Shiny Man” starts threatening the family Travis has taken as his own, well, he now has to decide whether to slide back in to his prior life or continue the path witness protection has provided him.

As danger mounts, Travis and Jess slide right back into the partnership they had before, but it is different. Because Travis is different.

Once loose ends start getting tied up, Travis must decide which life he wants to live. Can he walk away from the two kids he’s helping raise? Can he watch Jess walk away from him again?

Author Maggie K. Black has woven one tale that is hard to put down.

The Chimera, the Shiny Man and a precocious eight-year-old little girl are part of the excitement going on in Kilpatrick, Ontario.

RCMP Detective Jess Eddington travels to Kilpatrick, Ontario to try to talk her former partner, Travis Stone, into helping her out with her very important undercover assignment. It involves a case from when Travis was still her partner, the case that forced Travis into the Witness Protection Program. Together they closed the case with multiple arrests. A successful takedown. Except for one detail, the head of the International crime organization, the Chimera, escaped. Travis saw his face and now has a hefty bounty on his head. Thus being put into the Witness Protection Program. Now Jess is part of a RCMP witness protection group keeping those in protection safe. The Chimera case is not part of this but the Chimera's whereabouts came from a recent witness protection case. Travis wasn't answering her calls so Jess and fellow team member hacker Seth Miles drove to Kilpatrick to speak directly to Travis. They arrive at the address of where Travis lives above Tatlow Book Store to police cars with lights flashing and an ambulance in the front. Not wanting to blow their cover they sneak up to Travis' apartment via the fire escape in the back of the building. Jess walks into a situation of Travis being held at gunpoint. What is going on here? The Shiny Man, as Willow named him, escapes after blinding them with a very bright flash of light. This is not the best way to reunite with your former partner whose help you need.

Travis Stone was a "lost soul"when he arrived in Kilpatrick with his new identity from Witness Protection. The Tatlow family took him in and were instrumental in leading him to accept his new life. Unfortunately his friends, police officers Geoff and Amber Tatlow were both killed in the line of duty. Their two children, five-year-old Willow and her baby brother eight-month-old Dominick were left in the care of their grandmother. Travis stepped up to help raise the children he has come to love. Now their grandmother has fallen off a ladder and is being rushed to the hospital. An intruder held him at gunpoint while the kids were one floor above napping. Why is the Shiny Man searching his apartment? How will he keep the kids and Jess safe?

Witness Protection Unraveled by Maggie K. Black is the third book in her Protected Identities series. This has been a thrilling series. With so much going on in Kilpatrick this is an exciting addition to the series. I love all the characters, especially super cute eight-year-old Willow. The plot leads to turning the pages quickly to keep up with all the action. The dialogue is very entertaining especially from Willow. One of the highlights of the story for me was this callout on the baby monitor when Travis' apartment is being broken into and Seth catches it as they are approaching Kilpatrick.

"Maynaise. Maynaise. This is Willow Tatlow with my brother, Dominic. We're in Uncle Travis's apartment. Uncle Travis has been captured by the Shiny Man. Send rescue. Over."

Maynaise - so cute! Gotta love the precocious little girl!

Talking about unraveled, this story pulled me into two directions when it comes to my opinion of it. I enjoyed the people in the tale and the relationships between them. I loved the spirit of the small town and how they all pulled together. The complexity of the criminal cases was fascinating, and the HEA was something the protagonists had work for, it wasn't an automatic solution for their feels and emotions.
I loved the characters in the story, how they were drawn and how they interacted with each other, it realistic, it was honest, nothing came easy to them, and they had to put the effort in to make things work. Travis Stone was not a perfect man, he had his failings and faults, but he had worked on them, he had gone to therapy, and by the grace of God, he was a changed, improved man today, still working on himself.
The connection Travis had with Detective Jessica Eddington was undeniable and strong. There's not much that we learn about Jessica outside her career and her aspirations with it, but she is suitable with Travis, as they work together to catch the culprits, they are like two halves of a whole.
I loved the connection Travis had with the kids, it was heartfelt and sweet. And I adored the relationship Noah, the hacker from Jessica's team, developed with the children.
The action is fastpaced and thrilling. At times it moved so fast, the details got lost, while other times I ended up questioning the bagatelle events. My biggest issue with the story was the fact that Travis was in the WITSEC program, yet his former partner was still part of his life, and apparently knew the whole time where she could find him. How is that possible not to mention supposed to be believable?!
When Travis left the law enforcement and entered the WITSEC program he went to rehab for his coffee addiction, and quit consuming everything caffeine-related yet when Jessica was near him she could 'smell the familiar scent of coffee' of him. Since quitting coffee was made into rather significant detail about him my OCD brain got super frustrated about that blunder.
This is a tough one to review since on one hand there were so many elements that I truly enjoyed, even adored, and I was immensely entertained while reading the book, and I read it till the end, and I would read more books by this author. Yet there were also negative points that in my mind carry a rather significant amount of weight... leaving me unraveled.

Travis Stone has been living in Witness Protection for 4 years, after an undercover case went wrong. Now that that Witness Protection database has been breached, he jumps into action to protect those he loves, which has come to include two young orphans and their grandmother who have taken him in.

He is reunited with his former partner, Jessica, and is introduced to her teammate Seth who is a tech whiz, as they work together in a race against time to put away the man for good who forced him into Witness Protection.

There is a lot going on in this book, with the past and present colliding for Travis who was settling into civilian life, and finding peace in his small town life. There were many well developed characters, and I loved the children, Willow, Donovan, and their grandmother Patricia, who help him find a new normal after his former high tension life. Seth is a really fun guy, who is a genius, with a heart of gold, and is like one big kid, he was a great character who just made me happy. Jessica is very honest, committed to her convictions. Jessica is passionate about helping others, with courage and faith.

Overall this book had it all, faith, family, friendship, with not one but two suspenseful plotlines, and fantastic, well developed characters. All around a terrific read, with a great balance of suspense, faith, and family. There was so much going on, and this book was pretty much impossible to put down. Well-paced, and well balanced, I loved everything about it. Highly recommend this fantastic, highly engaging, and entertaining read!

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Witness Protection Unraveled. This is the third book in the Protected Indentities Series. I really admire Maggie's work and this is an excellent example of her work. This story is well written, full of faith, and full of action. I know you are going to love it.

Travis Stone is living in the Witness Protection Program. He was once a workaholic detective but during his four years in protection he has changed. When his ex-partner calls he is thrilled to hear the voice of the woman he once loved but he would not go back to that life style. He is now a better man. He is on his way to pick up a couple of children he cares for while their grandmother closes up the store. When he arrives he finds the grandmother on the floor in the back room. Has she been attacked by the"shiny man" little Willow saw at her window. He answers his phone, it's his ex and he asks her if has had been compromised. because he has a situation here.

Detective Jessica Eddington calls her ex-partner to convince him to help her with a case. She is going after the crime lord "Chimera" who is the man who forced Travis into the Witness Protection Program.

He answers her call, asks if he is compromised, and hangs up after saying he has a situation. Could she get him to help her?

A terrifying journey of trying to survive the attacks of the killers while trying to save the children and each other. God has a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A plan for good and not for evil. In this time of crisis Jesus is the answer to the turmoil. Give Him your heart and ask Him to take control of your life. His plan for you is much better than anything you dreamed of.

Witness Protection Unraveled by Maggie Black is a Christian romantic suspense with tons of action. The book is part of a series and can be read alone but you will get more out of the series if you read the in order.

Travis has been in the witness protection program for several years after he worked undercover and could identify a criminal that is trying to kill him. I found it interesting that Travis although a great cop found that it was not his calling and enjoys civilian life.
Jessica his former partner is coming to ask him for help on a case to catch the criminal who he is hiding from. Before they can get started Travis has his own issues in the small town he is living. Jessica and her team try to help without breaking his cover.
Seth, part of Jessica’s team was a great addition and I hope he gets his own book.
You can tell that Jessica and Travis had feelings for each other previously and they are trying to figure out how to work through the with the complications of life and witness protection.
I really enjoyed this action packed romantic suspense. Maggie is an author I have come to trust to keep entertained and on the edge of my seat.
Sexual content – kiss
Violence – nothing disturbing, but plenty of action, shots fired, kidnapping, the grandmother ends up in the hospital,

I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

Travis is under witness protection and has pretty much established a new life helping out a grandmother and her orphaned grandchildren. Now with the grandmother out of commission the children rely on him but its only a matter of time before he has to go back to his old life. Jessica his former partner shows up out of the blue for his help and it seems things come crashing down.

I enjoyed this book. There was so much going on to keep me hooked. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the readers wanting more. There was things going on where it was hard to tell if it was one person or two making themselves known that there was something up. Him and Jessica are undercover and lived dangerously and maybe its only a matter of times before things started to go down and its a wonder if their past of the case Jess was working on would come to get them. Plus there was the thing about the Shiny man that one of the children was talking about could it be in connection to Jess and Travis or something different entirely. Regardless there is so much about this book to enjoy and if you like a mystery suspense novel you'll like this book.

Another Great Episode in Protected Identities Series

by Barbara Kelley

Witness Protection Unraveled is Book 3 of the Protected Identities series by Maggie K. Black. This episode is about Jessica, an undercover RCMP cop, and Travis, a former RCMP cop who has been in Witness Protection for the past 5 years when the RCMP took down the Chimera's entire operation, while the head criminal got away. Jessica goes to the town where Travis is living so that she can get him to work with her to bring down the Chimera warlord. However, when she arrives, she becomes involved with a mystery and another criminal, the Shiny Man, so named by Willow, the little 5 year old girl, who has seen him. Willow and her baby brother, Dominic, are the two children that Travis considers family. Travis and Jessica, along with Seth and Liam from books 1 and 2, must work together to protect these two children and bring down the Shiny Man and the Chimera. This was an excellently written book, and I gave it a 5 star rating. I will be reading Book #4 next.

I love books with suspense and romance and this one brings the right dose of suspense, romance and tension.

Travis was an undercover agent, after breaking up a dangerous gang called Chimera, he had to go into hiding and became part of the government's protection program. After some strange events involving a Shiny Man, he will have to re-engage in investigations to find out if there is a correlation between these mysterious men and the Chimera. For that he will count on Seth, an internet specialist and his former partner and love of his life, Jess, a tough and strong detective who does everything to fight organized crime.

The plot is so very good and well stitched. I loved the participation of the children Dominic and Willow so much, they bring a lot of cuteness to the story. The ending is wonderful and I'm sighing so far.

Oooh, I loved the storyline of this one. Willow and Dominic were adorable and I’m a big fan of Travis! It was fun to see more of Seth and Jess and I liked the cameo from one of Maggie’s earlier series-now I am dying to read that series! There were a few minor mistakes but the story was completely charming and one I completely enjoyed! Excited for Liam’s story.

Quick read and a good story line. The only problem that bothered me were the typos I found in the book. A completed book should not have any blatant typos. I can't complain though because the book was a free gift from the Reader's Service.

It was a decent story, though somewhat unbelievable. The writing was good in a lot of parts, but I felt that it needed a lot more show versus tell in order to really pop. Not bad, kept my interest but it took a while to read because it wasn’t much of a page turner.

One of the best I've read in a while. Quite a change in having a man be in the WPP and then falling in love with 2 small children in a small town. I hated to see the book end, I wanted it to move on to the next chapter in Travis's life. I will continue to read more of this author's books.
