Paranormal House Flippers #1

Demons in the Bedroom

Rate this book
Have you inherited a creepy old house that needs updated bathroom tiles, a new kitchen, and an exorcism?

Call me: Helena Nicolescu, the best house flipper witch on the east coast.

But I have to admit, I might be in over my head this time. I bought “Lockwood House” at an auction, and the magical community definitely knew something was up, because my rivals were all in on it, including Jake and Jasper, the infuriating wolf shifter twins who think they’re so much better at renovations than me. I overpaid and now I’m stuck with a mess. Floors caving in, 70s carpeting, and…the ghost of an incubus who won’t stop flirting with me while I’m trying to demo.

That’s not the only problem. The former owner’s son seems to be drawn to the place against his own will. My witch radar is going off big time, telling me he has demon blood coursing through his own veins. And the wolves must smell trouble in the air, because they keep sniffing around too. I’ll definitely never tell them that I keep uncovering disconcerting artifacts throughout the house. And more than anything, I won’t admit that they both look pretty good in a tool belt. Why does this house seem like it’s calling trouble to the doorstep?

I have eight weeks to get this done and then I’m putting this mansion on the market and moving on.

This is a medium-burn reverse harem romance!

Lidiya Foxglove grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales, folklore and fantasy and also reads way too much manga. Fantasy romance is her favorite thing in the world, but she likes it steamy. She also loves cats and tea--it's cliche for a reason!

I never finished The Fairer Hex, the first book of A Witch among Warlocks series, and I guess I hadn't got the memo the new series was related to it.

Kinda fortunate because I might just have skipped it otherwise.

Demons in the Bedroom is different. Helena is relatable, about my age, has a job she is passionate about and she isn't special like Charlotte was. She's just a very normal witch, as practically disowned royalty witch can be. And if Helena is not special, her relationships aren't either. Sure, there is a very sexy incubus ghost and a politician thrown in the mix, but at no moment the romance take a grand romantic turn with everyone swearing loyalty to each other by the end of the book.

One book and there some crushing going on. They're not fated mates, they're not weirdly immediately in love or thinking of spending the rest of their lives together. Attraction, a job and eventually saving the world in the future bring them together and while I love intense love stories, I gotta admit this is extremely refreshing.

Paranormal House Flippers series is my first taste of Lidiya Foxglove. I watch a lot of the house flipping shows on HGTV and when I read the blurb well it sounded cute. I had a great time with this three book series.

***

Demons in the Bedroom is book one. The cover and blurb made this one sound like fun. I liked the idea and concept of house flippers. It was a cute concept and the book delivers on the flipping side of things.

It features our main character Helena who is a house flipper. In this one she finds a mysterious item in her house and that leads to a mystery. We don’t complete the mystery until the final book, but we do get a decent start.

We are introduced to a verity of characters and we get to see what wizard houses are like. We meet the love interests and get a feel for them. It is a reverse harm romance (still being established). The romance is subtle and the focus is on the house renovations and the mystery behind the magical object.

This was an enjoyable and fun read.

3.5 stars.

I didn't need the authors note to know that she enjoyed home improvement shows, the book was enough to enlighten me to that tidbit.

That being said I enjoyed this, I liked the banter between the characters (mostly the twins) , I liked the shopping for housing supplies as well. Can't wait to see what the next books bring.

Yes, yes , yes! This book was so much fun!

description

It also had everything I love- a strong female lead, a great RH, a bit of a slow build romance with enough spice to keep it interesting- and a great magical mystery!

Also, I'm so glad were getting multiple POVs from the guys too, because the twins are hilarious.

"The only bright side, I guess, was that they clearly didn’t like each other and were too busy competing with each other to bother with Jake and me. Actually, that wasn’t a bright side, was it? They didn’t even consider us competition? What the fuck?"

“Byron is definitely sort of…substantial, as ghosts go.” Jake snorted a laugh. “No kidding. Get some pants that fit.”

description

Plus I liked that there was some sexy fun and flirting going on between the characters while trying to restore the gorgeous old house.
I also liked that not EVERYTHING was about sex, and longing, and lingering looks every three seconds. Or waxing poetical about traitorous bodies...

description

(*cough* sorry pet peeve )
I also like that they story is giving me time to get to know the guys and enjoy the little flirting going on here and there.

But I am really interested in the world building and whats going on with the magical world and what exactly the treasure they found will lead to!

This was a really fun start to a RH series. I loved the blend of home renovating and paranormal elements. The heroine want to escape the fame and noteriety that accompanies her families’ name. Renovating old and magical homes makes her happier than the life she ran away from, an arranged marriage and more family obligations. Of course the house she buys in the beginning of the book will open a can of worms I imagine will span over three books, with three different homes. Along the way four unlikely men become entangled both with the home and Helena, two wolves and two Incubi. Can’t wait to see where the series goes. Is it weird I hope there’s a little more focus on the renovating, I’m kind of fascinated by it especially here because it was the home of a warlock and there’s so many magical add-ons to the home. Also this girl needs to spread the love, so far relationship wise, things are mostly up in the air. Curious how it’ll play out especially with Byron who’s “dead,” and as of this book the only one of her men she’s actually been intimate with......🤓🤓😍

Something different and fun. Multiple POV. Didn’t go the way I thought but it was enjoyable with a mystery to solve. I like how balanced the harem is. Looking forward to the next one. It is a spin off so spoilers on the brother.

4.5.

I really, really enjoyed this!

The concept of a witch, who was raised among the witch elite, who turned her back in all of that to buy, renovate, and the sell magical houses to the magical community is a delightfully novel concept in a genre that has come incredibly saturated with the same old thing.

After winning a new home in an auction, Helena definitely gets more than she bargained for, considering the house comes with an ancient incubus ghost and a darkly magical artifact he is deeply involved with, but clearly cursed to not reveal any of the mystery surrounding it to Helena. Add in two we're wolf brothers, who own a rival company to Helena's and the grandson of the dead owner of the house, who isn't quite as human as he thinks, and you have a great set of male characters.

What was also delightfully refreshing was that they weren't your typical RH stereotypes, with all of the different personality types ticked off in a list for each of the guys. They just felt like people in their own right, who all happen to have their own draw and reason for wanting to get involved with Helena, who, bless her, isn't really sure what is going on romantically and has told them all, with several eye rolls, that she is definitely not worth competing over.

So, I basically liked everything about this. Interesting and original plot, likeable, and not stereotypical, characters, an intriguing harem, where we don't know what the dynamic is going to be like, and the second book is out already!

This was fluff, but enjoyable fluff. Despite that, I have a few things to say, some relevant and some just me spouting off, none of it to be taken too seriously.

First, I wanna talk about that cover. I like the cover, don't get me wrong. It's flashy and eye catching. It snagged me successfully. But the characters is described in the book as dressing like Wednesday Adams. How exactly does a tightly dressed, half-clad woman, on a sexy cover translate into that character? It does not.

Why do we always have to glam characters up on covers? And it's not just the 'Oh, objectification of women' argument. (Though, having to make a character more visually sexy than her character to sell books is pretty baseline objectification.) It's the fact that authors create characters, who have personality and characteristics, and then someone decides to completely ignore them and give readers a cover that has nothing to do with the character they're reading and appreciating. It drives me batty. I hate it. At least make an effort to get characters close on covers, please. This 'model' may be blond (and I appreciate that she looks as strong as you'd expect a house flipper to be), but she doesn't give off a vibe even close to Hel in the book.

Readers should know that, though Hel and the guys that are forming her harem are fun and the book is quite readable, the plot isn't a complete arc. It's not really a cliffhanger, but nothing concludes either. Go in knowing this is the first third, or so, of a story and you should be OK.

Next, and I know this is completely irrelevant and does not effect my rating/review at all, but is pertinent to my current life. In my real life, I'm trying to get some work done on my house. I can't get anyone to plaster my kitchen wall without a 3-4 month wait time. I can't even get anyone to call me back to pave a drive, and it feels like no store ever actually has anything truly in stock, everything has to be ordered. So, the whole "eight weeks to get this done," when discussing a whole house refurbished (even if doing a lot of the work themselves) might be the strongest fantasy element in the whole book and is chapping my already construction related chapped ass. Just rub it in, why don't you. LOL

All in all, I liked the book enough to search out and read book two...and three. Because I know I'll have to read them all (and more, if that's not the end of the series) to get any conclusion.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it

When I first heard of this book I knew I had to read it. I've enjoyed books by this author before and the concept of paranormal house flippers just sounded like a lot of fun. And the book certainly delivers on that promise. It's a fun paranormal romance book where the main character flips houses. The house flipping is an integral part of the story and moves alongside the mystery surrounding a secret item and books they have to figure out.

I had a lot of fun reading this one. I liked the whole house flipping theme and how you follow Helena around as she works on this house and gets it ready to sell. Intermingled with the house flipping plot line is a paranormal mystery type of plot line. I liked how this mystery is a big thing and how they get involved in it and how it involves more house flipping along the way. The way these two plot lines were connected was well done. And I liked seeing how both of these plot lines progressed throughout the book with Helena and the rest workign on the house and on uncovering more information. Add in some romance as well and all the elements are blended well together.

I really liked seeing what wizard houses are like. The main character has to flip a house that belonged to a wizard and it was fun to read a bit about what their houses are like and the unique challenged of flipping a magical house. It was such a fun twist and a fun way to bring more magical stuff in the plot line.

I liked Helena as a main character. How she was doing what she loved and her love for house flipping and magical houses really shines through. but also how she can be lonely at times. I liked how she uses some magic throughout the book as well and has a familiar.

I liked the set-up for the romance, although as it isn't a reverse harem yet (it's still being established) it can be a tad awkward at times as the characters figure out how to act and they all slowly grow closer. Helena only gets intimate with one of them and because of that person being a ghost that makes the whole situation even more complicated. And she kisses two others, but so far that doesn't go further yet. I look forward to seeing how this develops into a reverse harem in the rest of the series.

I liked meeting the love interests and getting I feel for them. They also each have one or two chapters from their point of view, which also helped to get to know them better. I didn't fully feel the romances yet, but I think that will come in future books. Helena's relationship with the ghost mostly starts off with lust and only after that their relationship starts to develop a bit more. I liked Graham and how Helena introduces him to this world and he has to get used to the idea of magic. The wolf twins seemed to really care about Helena and I liked how there was a bit of relationship building and talking between the 3 of them. They have some fun scenes together and it helped that Helena already knew them. I look forward to seeing where the romances go in the next book.

It helped that I've read some other books set in this world already so it was easier to get into the world. I haven't read the Witch Among Warlocks series yet that got referred a few times, but this series can be read as a standalone without reading any of the other series. It had a bit of a similar vibe as Tempted by Demons by this author and as I already read that book I had a better understanding of the world. Luckily there also is enough explanation done in a natural way where you get a feel for the world. I like this world and I am curious what happened to the wyrd realm as I hadn't read about that before.

To summarize: This was such a fun read about paranormal house flippers. There is the house flipping plot line which is closely intermingled with the paranormal mystery storyline as that related to something they find in the house. It was fun to see these two plot lines progress throughout the book. I liked Helena as main character and seeing how much she loved flipping houses, she was capable and also used her magic. There also is some romance going on with 4 love interests for Helena, I liked getting to know the 4 love interests and look forward to seeing more as I didn't fully feel all of the romances yet. Her relationship with Bryon seemed mostly based on lust so far, but there are hints it will develop further. Graham seemed promising, but they haven't spend much time together yet, I did like seeing how she introduced him to the magical world. The wolf brothers I liked best so far as they seem to have known Helena for a while and I liked seeing them spend time together. I am curious to see how the reverse harem part will develop in the next book. This book is set in the same world as some of the author's other books and while it helps to have a better feel for the world if you have read the others already I think this also works as a standalone. All in all this was a great start to this new series and I look forward to reading book 2!

4-4.5 stars. As a real estate agent and as someone who has helped on multiple house flips myself this book had everything I love in it! Snarky FMC with a take charge attitude who also didn't put up with no crap.. paranormal storyline with demons, hints of mystery and something fishy going on with the leadership of all the 3 factions, ancient powerful artifacts...and.... all kinds of house flipping details. The truth is a lot of the best flips are auctioned now just as much happens virtually as happens "on the courthouse steps." Alot of times you don't get to see the inside of houses before you buy so I felt a real kinship with this FMC and her love of restoration as well as the author putting in some of the headaches involved. "As is" just don't come with a termite clearance so it can be devastating when you think something looks solid from the outside and then finding later that your 30-50k flip is going to cost 100k+. Luckily for this FMC she was dealing with magical clientele who were going to appreciate the fact that she didn't have to have an electrician come in and run electricity throughout the house. *gulp*

Our FMC, is a witch with a passion for old houses and the residual power and history left behind from the magical people that have lived before her. Her new acquisition, however, is way more than she can handle. Luckily there is a demon ghost spicing up her dreams, and some werewolf competition that have decided to join up and help. It seems as though there is some huge mystery surrounding the artifacts/books found in the house.. some dangerous mystery that may have made her a target with the councils.. One house down though.. and it looks like another house to fight for as her entourage uncovers the past of the houses and the "Sons of Pandora."

I truly did enjoy this book and all its references to stuff I deal with on the daily. Can't wait for the next book! Super excited.

great premise but this book just couldn't hold my interest. The authors info dumps were convoluted, out of sync and bordered too often on the boring. Whilst the heroine didn't seem too bad the story just meandered along, I wasn't gripped and the world the author had created sparked no need in me to find out more.
The romances... again, I felt very blah about them. They lacked sizzle. The characters failed to connect, and the heroine just drifted along with everything, never taking ownership or being proactive when it came to the men.

This book has been flirting with me for a while, but I learned through the comments that this was a spin-off of the A Witch Among Warlocks series so I went to that first. Unfortunately, I wanted to like The Fairer Hex (AWAW #1) more than I did. It was very NA and felt juvenile and choppy. I stopped reading after the first book and didn't read the others, but I finally decided to give this series a try. There is a lot of growth in terms of writing, pacing, plot, and romance in this book. I was so pleased!

I love Helena. She's wonderfully willed while also being caring and sentimental. It worked well with her menfolk. I also enjoyed that this book introduced us to everyone but didn't create the RH right away, which makes sense since Helena is a little skittish over it. With her brother being in a bond-marriage (the RH from AWAW series), he was disowned from their blue-blood family. It adds some real-world reactions to the RH setting that I found refreshing. I look forward to checking out the rest!

Tropes: reverse harem; urban fantasy; independent and sentimental house-flipper witch meets 4 supernatural mates; crude language throughout; mystery, action, and conspiracies; characters in peril; worries for familial rejection since they have already disowned her brother; sleep sex; prejudice, racism, and classism.

Heat rating: HOT—sex scenes throughout with explicit language, which adds to the overall story and relationships (more build up here than sexy times).

Helena is a witch. However, she left her witchy duties to follow her passion—flipping houses. She finds this house at an auction, that she knows she has to have at all cost, even if the house comes with a sexy ghost. And a sexy almost ex-owner. And two sexy house flipping rivals who also happen to be werewolves. Helena doesn't know why everybody is trying to get the house or why the magic council wants it, but it's a good mystery that she can't wait to solve.

I had high expectations for this book. The plot hooked me from the moment I read it, but I was disappointed. It started slow for then suddenly the narration of events became fast. She accepts the words of the house ghost without any doubt, and she's too trustworthy. Same for the ghost. As soon as he sees her, he believes she will help him save the world. The werewolves guys go from showing hatred to attraction in a matter of pages.

On the other hand, I really liked how the previous house owner who thought was a human, still finds it difficult believing that he's not what he thought it was. Helena too, while she had many traits that I didn't like, what I found interesting was the fact that she's still sceptical of what she needs to do and if it's worth getting disowned.

While this book is not 5 stars for me, I'm still gonna give a try to the series.

Cute, cosy, witty read.

I know I gave it less than 4, but that's for the lack of some detail, the smex scene lacking and flat. The world build also felt lacking, but this is a side squeal although a standalone series. I may have felt less was missing in build if I had read the other series. Anyway, it's a slow burn (for some) potential, why choose, paranormal, female main character story.

The world mentions witches, wizards, faie, shifters, angels, demons, demigods, and other magical supernatural races, all hidden from humans right now.
It's told from multiple POVs, and right now, there are 4 MMCs with romantic interests in the FMC.

Because the characters feel cosy and are witty enough to make me giggle, I want to read more. So don't take the rating as a negative. It's still a good read.

I don't know why I started this book (the title, really?!), I think I was curious about how bad it is.
Well, I actually really like it. There's some worldbuilding (more than in other books in this genre -> I have the explanation: there are already other stories in this "universe", but it definitely works as standalone series) and the relationships are developing. The harem is kind of there, but the protagonist has to accept it/try it. The guys really different, they've got distinguishable voices (always a big (+) with reverse harem). For some of the guys it's a more of a slow burn approach (if you define slow burn= not in bed in the fist book). I'm really surprised and I might try out other books from this author.

Totally loved this book. It was a new way to look at witches, werewolves and other forms of demons.
We see the Helena bid for a magical house to renovate. From here we get pulled into a twisty crazy ride once she meets Byron. We get to see Jake and Jasper come to her rescue when she falls through the floor, to then help her with the house. We also get to meet the Hot handsome Graham who she bought the house from.
With some steamy moments and lots of hot chemistry between Hel and the guys we see the book end with them needing to hurry to the next house. After someone tries to buy it from under them to get to something they need to find. To know more pick up a copy today

Wasn't the book for me

I enjoyed this book, but I'm just not getting into it. The story line is great and there's mystery and a bit of romance but I just couldn't get fully immersed in the story. I liked the characters well enough but Graham seems like an a**hole and other then feeling attraction for Helena im not even sure if he likes her. Byron is a mystery but he does seem to like her, I just know he's hiding something. I was actually a big fan of the Sullivan brothers though! Maybe one day ill come back to the series to unravel the mystery it holds but right now I'm just not feeling it.

By the time I got to the bowling scene I was skimming this book like crazy because I was just so darned bored. If something - anything - major or even kind of interesting happened then I must had missed it.
The story seemed to plod. The heroine was okayish, but seemed to miss some glaring red flags that anyone else would have run far far away from. Also felt like there was some sort of back story with the family/brother that I had missed - but then I also could barely bring myself to care, the characters and the entire story were just that lifeless.

It was a cool premise but a complete yawn.

What a fun read!!! I enjoyed it so much I couldn’t put this one down. Absolutely loved the humor in this book and all the snickering I did was very much needed.

When started reading, I was like Helena.. why is that name so familiar? Oh wait is it Harris’ sister?!? Then read a little further and YES!! It totally is his sister! That made this story even better as I LOVE delving back into this world and getting little references here and there to the other series. Don’t worry, if you haven’t read the A Witch Among Warlocks series you’ll be able to follow along with this series just fine. Then once you fall in love with this story, you can totally go back and read the other series and enjoy it as well!!

Can’t wait to see what happens next.

You know those house flipping shows on HGTV that we all watch with those dream homes we wish we could afford? Yeah well this book is even better than those shows. Move over Property Brothers, there’s a new set of hot twins in town!

Demons in the Bedroom is unlike any other PNR RH book out there. I loved that it combined my obsession with paranormal romance books and house flipping TV shows! I’m honestly hastily writing the review for this fantastic book so I can start book two immediately, haha! Loved it, highly recommend it- see ya again when my sleepless zombie self is finished book two!

The plot and premise paired with Foxglove's dry humor make for an entertaining read, but the magical elements are a bit underdeveloped. It seemed like it was so focused on what witches can't do, (combat magic, cause magic society sux) it neglected to define what witches can do (healing, but also mind-wiping?) ~ what about good old domestic magic like animating brooms to clean? That would be so valuable in the reno business, more helpful than shooting fireballs certainly. 3 'These Old Haunted Houses' out of 5.

Well this was a good start I like the ideas used. I'm left wanting to read the next one. I like the fact that she's a super high blooded witch but she chose such a low valued job despite her family. talking about ehr family they seem like the worse type of people. I like the familiars and all the characters and creatures. The dream sex brought the heat but there was a lot of fun in the book too.

Hoopla audiobook

I actually picked this up because of the male narrator (he was great).

The story was...ok. Nothing really happens in the book. It's like the author forgot to insert a climax. It's possible that the next books will further the story arc, but I'm probably not going to seek it out.

OK book but not that interested. It has no romance really but has lusting and that is not interesting to me. Also no action and good banter so will not continue this series.
