Vexx White is a down on his luck apprentice mage, recently expelled from Fallanden Magical Academy for experimenting with necromancy. With nothing to lose, he becomes a dungeoneer for hire—taking odd jobs in his home town of Cloudbury for pocket change. Nine out of ten dungeoneers die in their first ten quests, and to survive Vexx finds himself teaming up with a clumsy elf and a crazed succubus. When they’re not busy trying to kill each other, the dungeoneers drum up all the work they can get, from raiding dungeons to hunting down thieves.
Vexx’s adventures take him from the seedier parts of Cloudbury to the goblin-infested Lifeless Hills in search of gold and glory. But if he wants to live up to his hero, the legendary dungeoneer Dred Wyrm, what other choice is there?
This was a really fun read even though it was slightly out of my wheelhouse. I was really intrigued by the blurb - I think the dynamic cast of characters really sucked me in. The action was beautifully crafted. World building did leave some things to be desired.
I did give this book four stars because there are people in my life who love reading things like this and I would most definitely recommend this read to them.

So I got a copy of this book from Book Sirens and I will admit to holding my nose when I started to read it. Lately, I have read some truly atrocious self-published fantasy. I generally do not care for LitRPG and usually avoid the genre with the exception of a few authors – well this is going to be another author in the exception pile.
I would classify this book in the LitRPG genre as the magic mechanics certainly feel game like. I would say that this book is LitRPG lite, as none of the game mechanics are detailed. If I am going to read LitRPG, then I would prefer to read books such as A New Beginning saving me from skipping large sections of text.
The MC is not absolutely good, and I like the fact that he is not uber-powerful, and “crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.” Even towards the end of the book, the MC still runs out of magic, gets his butt kicked, and generally barely survives the first encounters.
The bickering between the two women got old and towards the end of the book I was tired of the arguing and hoped that the two women would either kill each other, screw the MC, or each other and shut up.
The sexual innuendos got a little tiresome also, but at least broke up the bickering between the two female MCs. I was wondering if we might see some MFF or FMF action, but at least in book #1 there is no sex between the MCs.
There are some minor grammar and other little mistakes, but not enough to reduce the enjoyment of the book.
Where this book shines is the combat and the situations. When the MC and the elf leave for the first adventure, I was sure this scene was going to be about as exciting as watching the grass grow. Much to my surprise the action and combat (I love the scene at the end with the paladin – a perfect example of a Chaotic Good character) are very good.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I found it quite enjoyable.
After being expelled from magic school for using dark powers, Vexx returns home in disgrace to find his only living parent dead. Needing to support himself, Vexx teams up with a hapless elf for some dungeoneering work. The pay is great, but the risks are high, and as the oft repeated rule goes: most adventurers die before their tenth quest.
This book reads like a computer game. The characters are assigned tasks, screw them up quite colorfully, somehow survive to move on after gaining XP, and repeat. It's fun and enjoyable with constant action.
There were a lot of innuendos sprinkled throughout, moving this up to at least a PG-13 rating. It was like every other paragraph had either an innuendo or blatant dirty talk. It was basically a teen boy's dream - two pretty women competing for his bed. Nothing actually happened other than lots of dirty talk, but it was very dirty talk.
Also, like a computer game, death was treated very cavalierly. For instance, someone accidentally killed their workmate during a practice axe throwing bout, and they all just shrugged their shoulders and said how they didn't like the guy anyway. It came across as a more humorous event in the book, but my point is that this book is a lot like playing a computer game. The characters are given numerous quests that help them level up. There's a lot of action, but it's also a novel, in that the characters are somewhat more developed than you'll get onscreen.
The book was fun too read with lots of humor (both clean and dirty).
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I grew up reading long, intricate books filled with a tapestry of intertwining plots. The older I grow, the more I look for newer genre's to keep my interest. These days after reading several thousand books, most things feel like deja vu. Over time Litrpg came to my attention, and I dived into the genre, enjoying series such as "the way of the shaman", "awaken online" and Alterworld.
While not truly litrpg, "A new beginning" is pretty close. It misses much of the skippable text and lets the narrative and plot carry the reader forwards instead. This isn't always the right choice since at times the character interaction is annoying and irritating, I suspect some women might be put off by the depiction of the female characters.
If you can look past this flaw you'll find a thoroughly enjoyable story For those familiar with D&D this is like reading a transcript of a session or listening to Drew Hayes authors and dragons podcasts. The action and adventure are the author's strengths, and it's strong enough to make up for the flaws in the character interactions.
If you like the genre, I recommend reading the book, though to me this is more a kindle unlimited or sale book than a must buy.
As a fan of D&D this was like reading about a friend's new campaign adventure. It was well written, funny, and action packed. You'd think some level one adventure would be boring? Nope, the combat is interesting and well written. The MC isn't all powerful either. He fails, a lot. When he doesn't fail? He probably just blew everything up and burned half the town down. He's got a clear goal in mind and doesn't mind breaking a few rules to get there.
This isn't going to win any awards for literary prose but that isn't the point. If you're looking for the book equivalent of a three star meal this isn't it. This is a comforting bag of chips you can kill on a Sunday afternoon. That is what I was looking for and that is what it delivered.
I'm definitely checking out his future books.
I also want to note that this book contains no sex or harems which seem to overwhelm self published fantasy these days. I appreciate it. Readers aged 14+ would enjoy it.
I really enjoyed this story. It read quickly and was funny. I really enjoyed the 3 main characters as they all have their own personalities and ways in which they interact with each other. The quests they go on are pretty cool as well and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
It was recommended to be as a "LitRPG" style novel, but I kind of disagree with that assessment. There are no numbers or stat dumps. But, there are some progression elements where the characters learn new spells and skills. It's less jarring than the traditional "LEVEL UP" you see in litrpgs in my opinion.
Received as a review copy, this is an honest review. Vexx White thought his life was over after being expelled from the magical academy for doing illegal magic. His life, however, is about to be changed forever; his desire to become a legendary dungeoneer isn't exactly straightforward either. Accompanied by a sexy, clumsy elf and a female demon whom has the constant desire to feed on just about anything... Vexx and Kaylin aren't safe from Shy's needs. From goblins to giant spiders, Vexx and his crew will take on any malicious creature and screw ball quest... hoping to survive to get paid. Highly recommended.
Humor can be hit/miss with me, and I usually don't like the kind used often in this book, but they got a laugh out of me. The book is fast paced action, with one quest following right after the previous one finished, sometimes multiple quests on the same day. I'd have loved a bit more world building, character growth, etc but I don't think the author intends to go in that direction. Just a fast paced fun to read novel, ideal as a palate cleanser between epic fantasies.
I'm new to the whole kindle experience,. I clicked on the book not entirely sure what it was about. I started reading to get a feel for the author and the storyline. Once I started reading, i never put it down. It's an easy read and very entertaining from start to finish. I'm hoping there is more in the series
MC is a mage and expelled from the academy for necomancy. In his hometown he pairs with a clumsy and naive elf and later on with a succubus and has several adventures. Funny entertaining read. Partly the bickering is a bit much, the elf is a bit too naive, the MC is a bit too lucky.... but well - nice entertainment for a sunday afternoon.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the character dynamics between the elf and the succubus. I like the way they fight for vex his attention. I also like the dungeon and dragons quest feel to it. Rex is an interesting character, he’s also very funny. My rating is 6/10.
I still haven't finished this and I'm trying too but still too many books to read. Trying a bit too hard to be funny, especially when poking fun at old established tropes; for me it's not working. Other than that the storyline does flow together well. I will get back to this book one day but until then so much more to read.
