A collection of classic hymns that are arranged into short devotions in the Thomas Nelson “100 Favorites” series, for the Countrymen Giftbook division.
This is a small format hardcover that’s made well, is in muted colors, has a ribbon marker and a place to write a gifting message. There are 100 hymns broken into 100 very short devotions, each one ending with a prayer that’s about 2 lines long.
Most of the hymns are classics from the 16th - 19th centuries. They cover all categories, (A Mighty Fortress, Peace Like A River) and seasons, (Silent Night, Up From the Grave He Arose), and include a few kids hymns, (Jesus Loves Me, This Little Light).
The devotions are brief and speak a bit about the composer/hymn, the scripture it relates to, the impetus behind it or an experience the author had. This is not an in-depth devotional book but more of an inspirational guide that can be used to supplement daily quiet times or add something special to a study.
My only criticism of this book is the font used for the large, colored script. I found it quite difficult to read on many occasions and actually couldn’t figure out what the word(s) were.
All things considered, a good devotional book with thoughtful messages 📚
I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful and beautifully written devotional which is based on 100 different hymns. This nicely bound, hardcover book has a gorgeous cover. The cover art continues onto the spine and back cover as well…so pretty. Also, the illustrations throughout the book are lovely.
As I read through this book, I found myself humming and singing the hymns that I know and love. I enjoyed learning the backstories behind the hymns and the song writers.
Reading through this book was like a trip down memory lane for me. I was reminded of hymns that I had not heard in many years. Many of the great hymns were born out of great heartache and difficult life experiences.
This lovely book would make a great gift for any worship leaders or hymn lovers. Read it and be blessed.
I read about a lot of uplifting hymns that I had never heard about through this book and the encouraging stories behind the people who wrote them. This is a good, light, devotional book, despite it using NIV verses (I just looked them up in my King James Version Bible). There was one story behind a hymn that was inaccurate, but apart from that it was a pleasant read. Stacy Edwards wrote a lot about drawing closer to God and about telling other people about God's salvation which is crucial.
A collection of the stories behind some of the most well-known hymns arranged in a devotional type format. Each story has a Scripture and a few closing thoughts to go along with the particular hymn. There is also a place for the reader to write out their own list of favorite hymns. The design of the book would definitely make this a great gift for any music lover.
This was a moving and fascinating book that took 100 popular hymns and wrote the history and the stories behind each of them. I learned so much new information about some of my favorite hymns. I was also moved by some messages from hymns I am not familiar with. This was a great devotional to read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. I sometimes think I do not know many hymns, but almost every one in here made me sing along. I appreciated the gentle tone and insights.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I picked it up on a whim at Barnes & Noble - which isn't known for carrying theological sound books! Yet it was actually good! A nice little devotional that I incorporated into our homeschool read aloud basket. It gives a little background story for each hymn and a very short devotional.
