A woman on the run... My Master is dead. He was my whole world. He was also my protector. Without his ownership, I've become a pawn to be used by the more bloodthirsty members of the Russian Mafia. To survive, I need to outwit them. If the man who helped kill my Master doesn't find me first.
A man on the hunt... She put a bullet in my chest to protect the monster she called Master. I'd thought she was a victim, but she was a deadly adversary. Now, I'll stop at nothing to get my revenge. I'll bring her to justice if I have to chase her halfway around the world.
A forbidden attraction... When MI5 agent Finlay MacClellan hunts down Alicia Camden, sparks fly. Obsessive hatred turns to burning lust. Both struggle to use it to their advantage, wielding desire as a weapon.
But when Finlay discovers the truth of Alicia's dark past, can hate turn to love?
Julia Sykes is a USA Today bestselling author of edgy, emotional romance. When she's not writing, she's usually reading.
Other than reading, her obsessions include iced coffee, unicorns, charcuterie, aged Manchego cheese (or any cheese, really), and fancy dresses.
An American expat, Julia now lives in her adopted, beloved home of York, England. Most days, you can find her wandering the cobbled streets and daydreaming about her next novel.
Julia Sykes is my go-to when I’m in need of a good BDSM read. I always enjoy the story and am happy to come back for more. I took a break from the Impossible series when I became busy, but I finally decided it was time to get back into things. After all, I was super eager to see what Highlander would bring.
Although the romance in Highlander is a standalone, I do recommend reading the Impossible series in order for the best understanding of the characters and the events. A lot happened in the prior book, and Highlander picks things up to bring us more of the characters we love and to dig deeper into the events that were so gripping.
With Highlander, we get to see more of our leading lady from Czar, the eighth book in the Impossible series, and I know a few people were disappointed by what happened at the end of the last book as it changed the way they looked at Czar. For me, Czar was always the dark prequel to the happily ever after our leading lady would get in Highlander, and I was eager to see her grow as a character.
Grow she did, and I loved it. As always, Julia Sykes sucked me into the story from the very first page. I could not get enough and powered through it in a single sitting. Although I found things a bit too quick towards the end, I love this addition to the series. It’s a great addition to the series, which has left me desperate for the next book.
Without a doubt, Highlander is another great addition to the Impossible series (even if Finlay isn’t technically a highlander, despite what certain companies will try and tell me when working out my shipping cost).
*No spoilers unless you haven't read the prior Impossible series books Rogue, Czar, and Crusader*
Let me start by saying you do not have to have read Rogue or Czar first to appreciate this story because the author provides us with several relevant flashbacks throughout this book. It does help your view of the situations, however, to have already read Crusader before getting into this story.
We first meet Alicia and Dimitri in Rogue and feel extremely bad for Alicia because she's a naked slave.
When meet Alicia again in "Czar," we empathize with and cry for her. Alicia's and Dimitri's love story is not a romance. It's more one girl's way of coping with a lethal relationship she ends up in while she's very young. But instead of being able to break up and move on after torment and tears like a normal ending to an abusive relationship, she ends up stuck with him for 7 years because he's a Russian mob boss. In Crusader, Dimitri ends up dead (trying not to spoil too much), and him and Alicia have basically been the villains of the entire book. So now we're back to being confused about our feelings for Alicia and we're kind of mad at her because of her villainess actions. But when the book ends, your heart is back to breaking for Alicia and you're holding your breath about what's going to happen.
Highlander was the perfect resolution to the tension that's been building with Alicia over multiple books. Again, I'm not giving any spoilers but I will say this book makes you see Alicia with a whole new depth of character. Finlay makes it hot on a new level as well *sigh.*
Also, as a superfan of the Impossible series, I was extremely happy to see the whole gang together again in a work environment.
Loved Alicia's whole story and that so many loose ends were tied in this story. And, I definitely can't wait for the next Impossible series book.
Blurb: A woman on the run… My Master is dead. He was my whole world. He was also my protector. Without his ownership, I’ve become a pawn to be used by the more bloodthirsty members of the Russian Mafia. To survive, I need to outwit them. If the man who helped kill my Master doesn’t find me first.
A man on the hunt… She put a bullet in my chest to protect the monster she called Master. I’d thought she was a victim, but she was a deadly adversary. Now, I’ll stop at nothing to get my revenge. I’ll bring her to justice if I have to chase her halfway around the world.
A forbidden attraction… When MI5 agent Finlay MacClellan hunts down Alicia Camden, sparks fly. Obsessive hatred turns to burning lust. Both struggle to use it to their advantage, wielding desire as a weapon.
But when Finlay discovers the truth of Alicia’s dark past, can lust turn to love?
I was so excited to finally read Alicia's story. We've seen her pop up with Dimitri here & there throughout the series. Reading about Finlay & Alicia reminded me so much of Smith & Lydia's story but with twists you don't expect. Both characters had so much inner conflict & I loved how Smith & Lydia played a huge role in this story & helped Finlay & Alicia come together. This book was a great addition to the Impossible Series & I'm so excited to read the next book!
Alicia and Finlay's book was an ok read for me, I'm glad to see Alicia out of her mind control of being Dimtri's slave, and she was able to think for herself and she was smart...I just did not feel emotional with these two. Finlay had some rage going on there, he thought Alicia was a willing slave and once he found out her true story....well we know happens then:)
Not my favorite in the series. I'm so close to finishing the series but part of me is just exhausted by it all. I'm going to push through since I'm curious whose story is next up. The story was alright. I very much dislike the male narrator in this series so that didn't help things at all. On to the next one...
The story Highlander by Julia Sykes is a suspenseful romance book that I enjoyed reading. Once I started I didn’t want to put it down until I had finished the last page. The story begins strong and only gets better. It is a page-turner that will keep you wondering what is going to happen next. It is a story about revenge, obsession and desire. It also is a story about finding the strength to overcome the past even when it haunts your thoughts. I enjoyed reading about the characters of Alicia and Finley. They both find that they have a mutual desire and connection to one another. As the story progresses so does the relationship that has started between them. Will they find love and a happy ending together? I found Alicia’s character a strong woman to have survived all that she has. She is also a woman that is haunted by the past and you read how it invades her thoughts. Finley is a strong alpha-male character that protects those he cares about. This is what I would consider a dark romance story. It does have some very steamy scenes that make the temperature in the room rise. An ever-present danger is always there as well. This story has many additional characters that you are introduced to. I enjoyed reading about them and the interactions/bantering that goes on between them. Don’t miss out on a well-written story with unforgettable characters.
This was the first book by this author for me and I really enjoyed it. This book has it all! Love, heart break, mob, bdsm, and everything in between. It took me just a little bit to be sucked into this story but once that happened I had to finish as fast as my pages would allow. The two main characters in this book had a very unconventional start but man did things change! I cant say who or what happens as it would ruin everything, but pick up a copy today and find out.
I think that our heroine recovers a little too quickly from her seven years of imprisonment, I don't know, I had the impression that she has recovered her inner strength and evolved her new relationship with less difficulty than one might expect, there it must be said that she was never really mentally broken as in the case of Lydia or Kathleen, who we met in the previous books. This criticism aside, it's as good a book as any other I've read by the author so far
Alicia is being controlled body and mind. What's right, what's wrong? How can she navigate the world alone? Sometimes sad for the amount of abuse inflicted, this story is also hopeful. Both Alicia and Finley are somewhat broken, their healing together makes for an emotional read. While fighting with the FBI to bring down the Bratva adds action and intrigue.
This is another amazing book in the Impossible series. This series is full of romance, BDSM, and suspense. If this is what you're looking for than this is the series for you. I would highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed reading this as much as the previous books. Looking forward to reading more once again as Julia Sykes writes great books. Highly recommend that you read them as well.
BDSM. Dark past. Stockholm Syndrome. For the SM lovers. A great read. I loved Finlay and Alicia. Recommend read for people who love PTSD recovery stories.
I thought book was really good. The only draw back with this book is large portions contained in this book was also in the previous one. Being that this is also meant to be a stand a lone. It had to be in this one to understand the plot and characters. I just got a bit frustrated reading it again.
Alicia is on the run from the Russian Mafia. Her former Master is dead, and he was everything to her. He was also her protector keeping her from the bloodthirsty members of the mafia. Her goal is to survive and to do that she needs to outwit them. Her only concern is to keep from being caught by the man who killed her Master.
Finlay is hunting Alicia after she put a bullet in his chest trying to protect her Master. He thought she was a victim but turns out she was only playing the part. Now he is obsessed with locating her and seeking revenge.
In this novel, sparks fly between these two individuals forming a forbidden love. Wielding desire as their weapon the two use their lust to make things work in their favor to attempt to put a stop to the dealings of the Russian Mafia and save many lives. Alicia is a tormented individual who has been put through unimaginable pain by her Master. He broke her and corrupted her thoughts regarding pain and sex. Finlay is determined to bring her down but is drawn into the situation more to stop the Mafia on U.S. soil as well as back home in England. I really liked Finlay’s character. He seemed like a very attractive strong Dom but also showed a sweeter side and that he cared when it came to Alicia.
This novel is 10th in its series and can be read as a stand-alone book. There is a lot of violence and sex scenes, so this book would be best for mature readers. It was easy to read and get lost in. I couldn’t put the novel down. There were not many errors that I came across while reading which demonstrates much time was put into editing this novel. I loved this novel and look forward to checking out more books by this author.
Highlander (Impossible #10) By Julia Sykes Rated 4 stars
I can’t even fathom the world this story is set in. Let alone the mind screwing this girl has gone through. So this book was on my outer rim of normal zone. A whole team of FBI Doms? .....Maybe but all openly? Too much. I assume there were previous books with all of these characters stories. So behind all the Dom and Sub stuff is a pretty normal story. Ha ha maybe I should say “ normal”. It’s your basic human trafficking, drug and mafia stuff.
Ok so let’s move on to the characters. Alicia has been brainwashed that she loved her Master. He just so happens to be in charge of the Mafia. Alicia was torn down to nothing (even though she didn’t realize it)being treated as worse than a slave.
There is a MI 5 agent from London who has this “sweet” Scottish brogue. Finlay! An alpha Dom as well! He and Alicia have a rocky relationship. She tried to killl him....twice but during his revenge of her he realized she wasn’t in her right mind. All part of her conditioning by her previous Master. Finlay took it upon himself to help her. He worked hard to build her emotionally and sexually.
What I like is the action and the determination of these characters. No matter what has happened they have a limit. Alicia refuses to be involved in human trafficking. I have to commend her for the fight she has in her. Finlay is pushed to his limits as well! in his job and in his mind as well as his body.
This is my first book by this author. The story was nice but as I said previously...way beyond my comfort zone. BDSM and dark romance/suspense are great for the right person. The author did a wonderful job on Alicia. I truly believed her and wondered how she survived.
Highlander by Julia Sykes is the tenth book in the Impossible series and is the conclusion to Alicia's story. Throughout this series she has played a number of roles from victim, lover, a pure evil, but in this book you get to see the true person she should be.
He master is dead and she has run away from the Russian mafia and needs to hide away from them, so she decides to escape to New York and hides within the BDSM club. The only problem is its not just the mafia who is after her, Finlay has not really recovered from Alicia shooting him to protect her master but her is on the hunt from London in New York. He only has one goal, to seek revenge.
This story is a great wrap up to this saga and had me understanding the Alicia character from the bad ass villain to a woman on the edge of survival, the emotion between these two characters was great to read and although Finlay is a great alpha male character I loved this story which showcased him within the story.
I have read other stories by this author and some of the books within this series but although reading the other books in the series would be great, you can follow the story enough without having the background on these characters. I enjoyed the style of writing and I feel invested in the story from the first page. I would recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys a dark romance with strong characters and loves a page turner.
I've been a follower of this entire series since the beginning. I've been waiting for Alicia to get an HEA since Rogue. When we first met Alicia she was the slave of Dimitri, leader of the Russian Mafia. He kept her kneeling at his feet, naked, for everyone to see. He kept her bare, in every way possible.
At the end of Crusader, book 9 in series, something happens to Dimitri that has Alicia on the run and an MI-5 agent, Finlay, on her tail.
I was so excited to read this book. I feel like I waited FOREVER to get to Alicia's story. She's shown up frequently in other stories and my heart broke every time. My wait was not in vain. Julia did such a fabulous job in writing this story. Finlay and Alicia are such complicated characters. Both have horrific pasts that are now trying to take over their futures.
Alicia must survive. She must do anything to survive but eventually there's a line that is crossed and she must do ANYTHING to right her wrong. Finlay must find and punish Alicia for what she did to him at the end of Crusader. Only Alicia ends up needing him to help her right her wrong and after she tells her tale Finlay can't help but be by her side.
Smith and Lydia have huge roles in this Highlander and I LOVED how they played their parts. Even in the midst of all the tragedy going on, Julia found a way to bring beauty into the story.
This story is about a mafia boss in Russia and one that runs New York and the one woman that tries to take them down with the help of an alpha Scotsman. Actually, the Scotsman wants to take her down first. Finlay and Alicia’s paths cross at the beginning of this story in London, although this is a series so these two may have met before this story starts. Alicia is trying to save herself and her Master from the police and Finlay trying to arrest her Master for all his wrong doings. Their path continues to the United States where Alicia is trying to get away from the mafia and Finlay is trying to track her down. When they finally find each other, they find more than they thought possible. Their sparks are surprising and hot to watch.
This story has doms and subs, people who opening talk about these lifestyle choices and all the people that love them. I liked the adventure of Finley tracking down “his little witch”. I liked this story about revenge, redemption and love. I liked the character of Finley, he is strong even with his secrets. And Alicia is strong even in her confusion and passion.
Personally, I love that there are many more books in this series. While this is book 10 (!) in this series, it is the first that I have read, I did not feel like I was missing the back story. I am really looking for to reading all of them.
Highlander (Impossible Series Book #10) By Julia Sykes 5 Stars
Highlander by Julia Sykes is the tenth installment of he Impossible Series. Although part of a series, this story can be read as a standalone. I do suggest to read the series in order to learn more about the main character of the story. It is a suspenseful romance full of heat and forbidden love. This is the story of Alicia, she was the slave of a Russian mob boss, Dimitri, which is now dead. She is now on the lam from Finley, an MI5 agent after she shot him defending Dimitri and she will do whatever it takes to avoid getting caught by Finley. Alicia ends up in NY and starts working at a BDSM club while she hides from Finley. He finally catches up to Alicia, but instead of doing away with her, there is an forbidden attraction between the two. Alicia has been through a lot of pain and mentally abused while being a sex slave. Will Finley overlook his hatred for Alicia and fall in love with her? There are plenty of twist and turns in this story to keep you on he edge of your seat. This is not my first read by Julia Sykes, her writing is seamless and full of raw passion. I recommend this book to those who really enjoy reading BDSM.
Highlander by Julia Sykes is a deadly game of cat and mouse and fighting in anyway you can. What do you do when the only world you have ever known is suddenly ripped away from you? Alicia soon finds out when the only person she has relied on for years - her master - is taken away from her. She finds herself on the run from the person who killed him as well as the mafia who only want to use her as a pawn. But can she stay one step ahead of them all? Can she fight for her life? Finlay didn’t expect for Alicia to have such a tie to the one she called her master. He didn’t expect the connection to run so deep. Chasing after her he also doesn’t expect to feel the sparks between them. But when he catches her can he overlook everything? Or will her past be just too much?
I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be engaging and fast paced. The writing style was one that kept you turning the pages, curious to see what would happen next. I loved the way the author introduced Alicia’s past and how everything tied in. Finlay and Alicia were great characters who complimented each other. An overall great book.
Alicia Camden was the slave of Dimitri Abramovich who was the head of the Russian Mafia. Alicia feels like demitri really did care for her and probably did care a small amount about her. But at the end of the day, she was just his slave. He has broken her and now he owns her. Until, he got killed. Now she’s on the run from the Russian Mafia. Dimitri’s right hand man Roman is stepping up to run the mafia but he needs Alicia to complete that. She runs to NY and is working the BDSM clubs passing Bliss in exchange for Peter keeping her safe. No one expected the M15 agent she shot in London to travel across the pond to find her. Finlay recovered and within a few months and he went on his own to NY looking for his witch aka Alicia.
Alicia thought Bliss was used to protect Subs from doms but there’s a much bigger picture she had no idea what was happening. Now she feels like it’s her job to save a these girls.
This book has a lot of twists you didn’t see coming. When Finlay finds Alicia, will he bring her in or will he help her get to the bottom of everything. I thought this book was action packed from the middle to end and was greatly written.
Highlander was a great dark 5 star read. I was once again pulled in by Julia Sykes writing.
Alicia's world was turned upside down when her Master was killed in Crusader and she is now on the run from the Mafia and Finlay. Finlay is after Alicia, especially since she is the one who shot him.
Alicia is used to having her Master control her and without him she’s feeling lost. She is in survival mode. When Finlay finds Alicia there seems to be some intense connection between them. And as Finlay learns more about Alicia his original plans get a little complicated. Will Alicia be able to put her trust in Finlay? Will Finlay be able to protect Alicia?
I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. There is action, suspense, BDSM and some very dark scenes. If you like dark than you will like this book and series. As I read more from this series the more I get drawn in. All of the characters added a great element to the story. Right now I think Alicia and Finlay are my favorites so far. The books can be read as stand alone however I feel you will connect better with the characters if you start from the beginning.
Highlander is the tenth book in the Impossible series by Julia Sykes. I don’t know how I missed this author, but this is the first book I have read by Ms. Sykes. This book can be read as a stand alone as I had no trouble following the story. I will be going back and reading Ms. Sykes backlog because this book is just that good. This suspenseful romance had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The story flowed and the characters were true to life. Alicia, was controlled by a Russian Mob Boss, who was also her Master. When Dimitri is killed, Alicia finds herself on the run from both the mob and the MI5 detective, Finley, who she shot trying to protect her master. The story is full of twists and turns, that will having you thinking what is coming next? As Alicia and Finley find out more about each other, will they learn to trust? Will they be able to put old baggage behind them and concentrate on the chemistry between them? You need to get this book to find out. I highly recommend this book and it is definitely worth your time to read.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! A Dark Romance, so brilliantly structure! I love seen Alicia's redemption or salvation on this installment. I was never happy about her outcome on Czar's (Book #8) of this fascinating series, but I kept following her and Finlay's story as well on each book (Rogue, Czar, and Crusader). That's exactly what I love about Julia Sykes's beautiful writing style, she just don't make character appear or disappear; she bring them to LIFE and you follow their stories!!!
This edgy, kind of action-suspense thriller dark romance story, is well-written. I love the chemistry between out main characters. Finlay and Alicia are so damn right for each other. They complete one another and deserve their HEA as well.
A perfect addition to the Impossible series! You can read this book as standalone, but I'm sure you won't be able to help yourself and get into the whole series in the blink of an eye.
I highly recommend this entire series if you like dark romance and have no problem with BDSM with explicit details.
