I thought I'd found a way to destroy the malicious power Roseborne College held over all its students—but I seem to have unleashed a host of fresh horrors instead. The school's ruling spirits are flying free, even more intent on tormenting us. Visions from the worst moments of our pasts are stalking us like ghosts, and my foster brother may have fallen too far into his monstrous nature to be saved.
It's all I can do to try to protect myself and the three guys I've fallen for here, let alone the rest of the school's inhabitants. On top of that, the supernatural energies I've just discovered in myself have desires all of their own.
As our most awful mistakes consume us, can we hold onto enough faith to keep up the struggle? And how much of myself will I have to sacrifice for a single chance at freedom?
Academy of the Forsaken is the third and final book in a gothic paranormal trilogy with shades of Beauty and the Beast. If you love snarky heroines, damaged heroes, dark secrets galore, and reverse harem romance with no choosing required, look no further! Just beware: Once you enter Roseborne College, there may be no coming back...
Eva Chase lives in Canada with her family. She loves stories both swoony and supernatural, and strong women and the men who appreciate them. You can visit her online at www.evachase.com.
After my last Eva Chase book I needed a little break. Sometimes that happens. If I read too much by the same author, I stop being amazed by them, which I only find very unfair to the books. However, after my break I started feeling the itch again and this morning I though that finishing this trilogy was a great way to finally finish one of my unfinished series. And it didn't take long before I smiled and realized my Eva Chase love was back.
And that's mostly because this book was for 90% purely psychological warfare and I loved it. I loved the concept of this last book in the trilogy, I loved how much information it gave us about all the characters we came to love, I loved how this book was in every way about making amends, about understanding what you did wrong, about realizing that although the punishment was unfair, you did make mistakes and needed to say sorry for them.
We really discovered the crimes all the boys were here for and we saw more detailed what our leading lady had done to land herself in this place. And Chase never tries to sugarcoat any of it. They know they were bad people and made some shitty choices. However, because of their punishment and because of all the things they did and fought in this trilogy they've grown and learned and are ready to live a better life this time.
In this last book we also get the missing information considering the origins of the school and what the founding kids had actually done to create this place. And it was in every way gruesome and in a twisted way also understandable (but not justified) where it came from. However, it did really clear up so many things and we could really see where those founders were coming from, what they had endured and what they had done.
This last book of the trilogy really ended the series in a very satisfied way, with a lot of details explained. And I think I enjoyed this last book the most out of all three!
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
Academy of the Fateful is the final book in the Cursed Studies series and it all comes down to this. Trix is fighting back, the guys are supporting her and the supernatural at Roseborne academy have amped-up their efforts. The final battle is here and the question is will those left standing make up for past behavior.
This series is so unique to me, of course, it has supernatural elements but if really focuses on how people treat each other, learning from past mistakes, and earning redemption. It's a life lesson type of story while giving it a supernatural twist with magic, ghosts, and steamy romance.
The final book was certainly good. It was really interesting seeing everyone's past, how everyone's past decisions made them a target for Roseborne. Things were bad and everyone made poor decisions but it's how they confronted their past that help makes a difference in the present, help them recognize their mistakes, and become better people.
I loved seeing the guys come together with Trix, they trust her with their past, the good, and the bad, and they trust her enough to admit what they are thinking and feeling. Trix has also grown, she has finally come to terms with her past and able to open up to the guys. While it started in the previous book it became complete in this story. There was one development that I didn't see coming and I have surprising feelings about it, I wish I could go into more but I will say that I wish it could have gone another way.
Academy of the Fateful was the perfect ending for the Cursed Studies series. Questions where answered, things were resolved as much as they could have been and I have a greater understanding of the overall story. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I am looking forward to what Eva writes next.
I received a free audio copy of this book directly from the author for an honest review.
What an amazing finale! I was kept invested in this series from start to finish I have enjoyed it so much. Overall the drama and the actual storyline have been the focus more-so than the romance side which I’ve really found refreshing for academy books! Definitely something this author knows about is having an interesting plot with lots of mystery, twists and turns to keep you fully involved! There’s plenty of emotional moments in this finale and a whole heap of angst but it’s totally worth it for this ending. Absolutely perfect!
I’m glad I stuck through the whole book. There were times that I wanted to stop reading it because I couldn’t get past how selfish Cade was being. In the end; it worked out though.
I read this in one sitting but I was unwhelmed by it. It's not been my favourite series by Eva Chase and I'm not sure I'd say I've 'gained' anything by reading it. There is nothing inherently wrong with it, there just wasn't enough of the characters, the plot, the development, the structure, for me to fully immerse myself in.
This is the last book in the trilogy and it focuses on Trix ending the curse and freeing all those trapped there. I expected to have all my questions answered but I felt that a lot of the answers I required were answered in such a vague scope that I really didn't learn anything or feel satisfied in any way.
Let's talk about Cade. I hate him, we know this. There wasn't enough of his character to demonstrate he had the ability to change. His character felt almost like an afterthought of the writer. I don't think that his story added anything to the narrative. He's truly icky and gross but his presence didn't benefit anyone. His 'monster' wasn't really explained. He didn't really learn his lesson. I was left dejected by him and viewed him more as a nuisance rather than anything else.
Trix, well, she definitely showed her strength, but again, there were elements of her character that would have been so good if they had just been explored. But with just hints to contend with, he character felt a little rushed and incomplete.
Ryo, Jenson, and Elias, well, they got to face their fears and we got to learn more about their characters. It was needed to understand them to a better degree.
The teachers, well, their stories didn't get explored in as much detail as I would have liked.
It's sort of like a sour satsuma. There was so much potential but it wasn't included.
The last book in the Cursed Studies series was one of my highly anticipated releases this summer and I couldn't want to get my hands on the audiobook!! I really enjoyed these characters, well that they weren't always super likable. I mean that in a good way. They definitely have their flaws. They wouldn't have been at Roseborn if they hadn't done some pretty horrible things. I thought it was really clever how we got to see some of the backstories in this world. It wasn't just the characters spilling their guts and letting their walls down. I won't spoil it, but it makes it feel more real and not a fantasy world kinda moment. I think the climax to me was a little fast and could have been a little more detailed/stretched out but seriously, it is a such a minor critique. Easily still 5 stars across the board. Oh but I mean, it would have been cool to get some resolution on some of the side characters. I did like the resolution with one of the MCs, it felt right ( I kinda saw it coming but it was done really well).
Narration again was on point. I was happy to see more POV changes in this book because Jason does a really great job with the inflections of these guys. I also enjoyed all the various side character voices Lidia and Jason did (like the ghosts/older students). 5/5 stars from me, will be checking out more books by Lidia (already have others on my list of Jason's hahaha)
Will definitely listen to these again and would recommend. I am excited to see what Eva does next and I am going to definitely check out her backlog since this was my first series I listened of hers.
The darkest of the three, with an emotional but happy ending!
This book is by far, in my opinion, the darkest of the trilogy.
Trix may have destroyed what she thought was the staff's source of power, but the school is in for a whole other nightmare because of it. Everyone has to face those they wronged due to their actions. If they don't make amends and acknowledge what they did wrong, it could very well cost them their lives.
We see a couple of the people that each of the main characters hurt in their past in vivid detail. Some are saved in the vision version of events. Others are not. Some require a heartfelt apology, and others require more truths or self-forgiveness. Be warned that some of these scenes may be triggering, so watch for content warnings!
My only real critique of this book is a couple of scenes that were written about. There was one in particular that turned into a "spicier" moment, but I felt like I kept getting removed a bit from the moment when it repeated, "the other guy" was doing something. It was Twix along with two of her men, and when one character was doing something to her, rather than say the name, it would say, "and the other guy did this." Example: "I grasped Elias harder to steady myself as I rocked with the other guy’s thrusts." It makes it sound impersonal or that she doesn't know "the other guy's" name. I feel it took away from the moment when this happened, but I won't remove any stars for that for the overall book.
It has a bit of a bittersweet ending before the epilogue, I couldn't help but keep wiping tears from my eyes! I enjoyed this series, though, and I will be remembering it for a while!
Beatrice, or Trix, thought she had found a way to destroy the evil power that is trapping and torturing the students at Roseborne College in the previous book in this trilogy, but all she actually achieve was to let loose different horrors instead. The evil spirits are now flying free and are even more intend upon tormenting the students. Visions from the worst moments of their past stalk them like a ghost and foster brother Cade appears to have gone too far into the monstrous nature to be saved anymore. Can she hold it together enough to protect herself and the three guys she has fallen for let alone save the rest of the students too? Plus the supernatural energies she found in herself have their own aims too. As our most awful mistakes consume us, can we hold onto enough faith to keep up the struggle? And how much of myself will I have to sacrifice for a single chance at freedom?
This is the third book in a series and it makes much more sense if you have read the previous two first. I love the story and the way the evilness in the school is manifested and develops. The way the story finished was really unexpected and then pleasant as it developed further. Well written and very enjoyable, it was easier to read and very addictive. Does contain sexual content and a reverse harem.
Ghosts, magic and crazy evil professors out for revenge In this final installment of this mind bending tale, the students and Trix figure out the drive behind the professors mission. They have been punishing and torturing the students until they wither away, they seem to have a malicious satisfaction to see them drained of any life. They want them to own up to their mistakes, but do not seem to want them to be able to make up for those mistakes. After Trix has broken down the ritual barrier, this has become a time where the students need to face their demons, actually ghosts, as they must learn to own up to their past mistakes. No excuses allowed.
Trix is in a unique position and she too must learn to stand other own two feet and express her real feelings. This is a story about loyalties, standing up for what is right, love instead of hate, forgiveness instead of vengeance, sacrifice instead of self-preservation. That sometimes you need to step away from the pain and anger and to step towards compassion and affection. Trix and her guys must work together and trust each other as they work towards better choices as they go forward. They all have great chemistry together and there are some tastefully done detailed sex scenes. An excellent and creative plot that I highly recommend. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.
What an amazing conclusion to this series it was. The author kept me invested from start to finish, something that doesn't really happen that much. The plot was balanced pretty well between drama, mystery, suspense, romance and heat. I even shed tears on several occasions, again, something that doesn't happen that often. Very well done indeed!
Overall I would give this series the next ratings:
Romance: 3,5/5 There is a romantic development, but the overall plot takes the lead in this book.
Drama: 5/5 The balance was perfect. There was drama, but not in a way that I felt like it was too much. This was balanced out pretty well.
Suspense and mystery? 4/5. There was heaps of suspense in this series, as we get to the secrets of Rosewood academy.
Dark 3/5 For me this wasn't a dark read, considering what I believe to be dark. However, when I look at it from a more objective stance, I can see that some parts can be viewed as darker/triggering. There are recounts of situations in the past, as well as the harsh punishments of the school.
Heat 3,5/5
HEA? Yes
Cheating? No
Narration The narrators did a great job differentiating the different characters. I loved listening to these audiobooks
Eva Chase’s Cursed Studies Trilogy is about sins, retribution, suffering, guilt with a healthy dose of ghosts and magic. This reverse-harem romance keeps you on your toes even as you might only be sitting at a place, lost within the pages of the books. If I do not count the time I had to wait before getting the last book, I finished the whole trilogy within 3 days. Yes! It is that exciting and nerve wracking. Roseborne itself is the villain of the story as Trix along Elias, Jensen, and Ryo battle vengeful spirits embittered by their own lives. The story itself is not only about this battle for freedom and life but also for getting back to the world to make amends. Yes, the characters in the book are not innocent and for some, the crimes elaborated in the book might weigh heavily on the moral compass; but the author takes us past that. The story of Trix and her harem shows us the power of love, compassion, and forgiveness. The battle within as each character strives for revival and redemption is almost at par with the war being waged outside as it is up to Trix to fight on the behalf of all who have lost all will of actually living.
The majority of the story is Trix and her harem confronting the crappy things they've done via "ghosts" that plunge them into flashbacks. It's way, way too much. One for each person would have been fine. Instead, everyone gets at least two trips down memory lane, some get more. And Trix decides to help a few other people as well.
There shouldn't have been any sex scenes except the final one. They're trying to break out of Roseborne, and decide to skip off for threesomes or sex when all hell is breaking loose.
I think the issue is that the trilogy is awkwardly paced. Most of this book should have been finding a way out, not dealing with inner demons and having sex. They only get out because Trix gets a supercharge of the power she suddenly found out she had at the end of book two to tie up a certain loose end and get it out of the way permanently. Having Trix power-up through ~*emotions*~ felt like a deus ex machina copout. Destroying the rosebush should have been enough. Or at least have another component to destroy rather than having a spirit pop out to convince the villains of their wicked ways so they'll... disappear willingly, I guess.
The students of Roseborne college are facing a more dire situation with the essence of the original students/staff being released from their physical bodies and the spirits of other victims seeking vengeance. They are now relentlessly attacking the students and causing more injuries and deaths.
This book is jammed-packed with information and with so much action going on. We have some knowledge in the previous book as to why our heroes got themselves into Roseborne. But this book explains more details on that aspect.
The story somewhat contains a sad moment but ends with a nice happy ending. What's the moral of the story in this book? Forgiveness, acknowledgement of mistakes, love, and compassion are the key elements to achieving a healthy lifestyle! Stick to all that, and Roseborne would never enrol you into their college!
As usual, before wrapping up the series, I always compared the similarity between the leading male character's personalities in Eva's series that I've finished reading. Here is what I thought about the heroes.
Personalities - Dragon Shifter's Mates - Traitor of Villains - Cursed Studies Sceptical - West - Malcolm - Jensen Erudite - Aaron - Declan - Elias Protector - Nate - Connar - Ryo Overconfident - Marco - Jude - NIL
This review applies to all the books in the series.
Not sure if it was the mood I was in the first time I read this book (I stopped at 57%) or something else, but I decided to give this series another try because I have loved everything else by Eva Chase. I'm glad I did give this another try. The first book is the most confusing and odd - and rightly so as this is what Trix herself is experiencing. This is similar to another series I read (which was also good, but had a bitter/losing, although fitting, type of ending) and this gives me the overcoming/confronting our own personal darkness and also the evil perpetuated by others that I was craving. Each book got even better as the story built and we get to know what each member of the group did in the past and how they feel about it now. This was a great series and I encourage you to get past the confusing and odd first book (we do find out why things are the way they are) to get to the depth in this series.
This was a really good wrap up to the series. I not only felt like everything that needed to be resolved was. But also, that you truly got to see how much progress and growth each of the main characters had made in order to break free of the curse. While I will say that there is a part of me that wished that there didn’t need to be so much additional loss for many of the main characters, I do feel like most of the loss that happened helped the characters in significant ways. The ending overall was very satisfying, and the narrators did an amazing job for their parts. I will, however, always prefer in circumstances like this for there to be either duet narration with each character having their own individual narrator, or for the narrators chosen to have super strong multi tone abilities. This book still managed to be a good listen though and I definitely plan to check out more books from this author.
This is a fantastic wrap up to the Cursed Studies series. If you haven't read the first two books, hurry and do that so you can read this one. Beatrice, or Trix as she likes to be called, has managed to destroy the hateful plant that grew inn the basement of the Academy, but the students still can't escape. Not only that, but angry spirits stalk the students. Spirits that have specific targets. In order to escape then you have to be willing to give them what they need. You have to humble yourself and admit your misdeeds. But if that is not enough, the vengeful teachers and headmaster are determined to keep their games going. It will take everything, Trix, Ryo, Jenson, Elias, and Cade can do to break them all out of Roseborne, and even that might not be enough.
I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
This was a very intriguing series with plenty of plot twists and loads of passion. This was so very multilayered with each character having a past to atone for. The ending was justly deserved and gives me hope for a follow up novella soon. Seeing the past mistakes really drew upon the heart of this series. These were characters that had such likable qualities that it was unsettling to see just how devious they really were. Eva Chase can pen complicated characters unlike anyone else. She's able to delve into the inner core and drag the dredges to create an emotional landscape that the reader won't soon forget.
I should have read this ages ago when it released, but life and a barrage of new releases made me put it off too long. The finale of this series was very different from the first two, being that it took place over a much shorter time line, (with the exception of the last chapter) so there was more detail and the pacing was slower. But the emotions were a hell of a lot stronger. There was a lot of heartbreak, tempered with a good hit of hope to balance it out, as all their pasts were revealed and confronted. With a bittersweet ending, it was perfect for our group of repenters.
Things get grittier due to what happened in the last book. The gothic undertones are let loose and run around just like the rest of the crazy at the college. There were twists, lies, evil spirits, crazy teachers/students and Trix and the ones she loves trying to survive it all. I love how Trix truly comes into her own in this last book in the series. The mood and the overall story and ending were amazing and really kept me reading to see what happened next and how Trix would survive it all. I loved this series sand this conclusion to it all.
Book 3 in the series. Wow what can I say about this series. This one will have you listening till the end . Lots of twists and turns . The third book will show how the academy was getting their energy. Trix And her men got lots of answers of all the unusual happenings and how the Rose bush made things happen . Everyone got what they deserved. Grab it and see what happens to Trix foster brother At the end Is he completely a wolf.
Lidia Dornet, Jason Clarke Performance was great. They brought this story to life . Their voices were perfect for each character
I'm glad they got their happily ever after, but I was sad about how things turned out with Cade. The whole premise of the book was her going to the Academy to find her stepbrother, then he is mentioned here and there and turned out to be a manipulative prick. We never know why his curse is the monster that he became, but unlike her other guys we know why they have the curse they have but nothing was ever told about Cade's. IDK the whole thing was odd to me and I thought his character deserved better.
Trix wants to help free the people stuck in Roseborne College, luckily she has Ryo, Jensen, and Elias to help her. How will she feel as their secrets are revealed? There was a reason why they were chosen to be to brought to be tormented by Roseborne College. I loved this conclusion to this intriguing series, Trix certainly had lots of challenges, but she is a strong woman determine to break the curse (and I loved that about her).
Academy of the Fateful is the conclusion of the Cursed Studies series. I have really enjoyed reading these stories, and loved the gothic undertones and elements of Beauty and the Beast. Academy of the Fateful is an adventure of a story filled with secrets and lies, love, sacrifice and redemption. I loved every minute of Trix and her guys, and I would love to see a bonus epilogue or similar in the future to catch up with these characters.
Trix is determined to free all the students at Roseborne, nobody, no matter their crimes, deserves the torture inflicted by the staff everyday. Will she and her three (very yummy) man crew win? Can they prevail against loose spirits, the staff in their true form, and whatever else Roseborne throws at them? This is a great read, with fast paced action throughout, well written, and a few heated pages!
Ok, I now take back what I said previous!y about lol one. Yes,it wasn't as fast paced as two and three, but you get a deeper understanding in an almost Zen way. Readers won't be able to read all three books without the fee!ings and snippets of information from the first book creeping out through the rest. Its a fantastic series, and I am very glad I kept up until the end. Bravo, Ms. Chase!!!
Wow Eva Chase did it again. This is such a unique series. I loved it. I love the Beauty and the Beast aspect layered in. I will have to say that book three started out full throttle. You better hold on tight. I could have never guessed where this book was headed, but in the end Trix and her guys got their HEA. If you enjoy PNR RH give this series a chance.
Pure bliss! This is such a wonderful conclusion to the series! I really didn't imagine the ending like this, but it works so well. I'm sorry to have reached the end of Trix's story, but what an ending! Fabulous series, so well constructed and written. Definitely a series to read and read again all over again.
