The Spanish name Llano Estacado, meaning Staked Plain, is part of the high plains of the United States, located west of today’s Lubbock, Texas. It covers an area of about 30,000 square miles, extending to the state of New Mexico. It is a strikingly flat and monotonous area at an elevation of between 3,000-4,000 feet. Local water-retaining depressions and washes that, due to the meager rainfall, rarely hold water occasionally break this semiarid plain. Sandstorms can cut down vision in the midst of day and scour the unwary with tiny bullets of sand. It is said that even Indians hesitated to cross this wasteland. Myth holds that the Coronado expedition planted stakes as guideposts for the return trip when it first crossed the plain westward, giving the area its name. Karl May has used the myth of the stakes as a backdrop for his story of ‘The Ghost of Llano Estacado’. Again, he assembles many of his Western heroes for new adventures and the performance of good deeds, in the process adding a few new characters. One of his recurring characters, Hobble-Frank, owner of the Villa “Bear Fat” in Saxony, know-it-all, mangler of half-knowledge, with his persistent and extensive elaboration’s, may have been funny a hundred years ago when read in German. However, his argumentative discourses, when translated into English, become rather tedious. They often have no meaning for the English-only reader, since they deal with local events and characters of his (and Karl May’s) home state, and mangle geography and ancient history in an attempt to be funny. At worst, they make no sense when translated. Hence, I have taken the liberty to severely edit his profuseness to make the story line flow more smoothly. Rest assured, that I have otherwise stayed as close as possible to Karl May’s writings and left even his many, many compass directions unaltered.

About the author

Karl Friedrich May (also Karol May) was one of the best selling German writers of all time, noted mainly for books set in the American Old West, (best known for the characters of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand) and similar books set in the Orient and Middle East. In addition, he wrote stories set in his native Germany, in China and in South America.

May also wrote poetry and several plays, as well as composing music; he was proficient with several musical instruments. May's musical version of "Ave Maria" became very well known.

Bardzo przyjemna, rozkręciła się bardziej niż się spodziewałam. Dużo się dzieje jak na niezbyt grubą książkę, co pokazuje, że dobra historia to nie zawsze grube tomiszcze na ponad pięćset stron.

Poczułam klimat już w pierwszym rozdziale i siedziałam w nim do końca. Podczas czytania ciągle widziałam obrazy w głowie i czasami miałam wrażenie jakbym była obserwatorem na miejscu.

Ciężko było mi się oderwać od historii. Nie zwracałam uwagi na to, czy coś się nie zgadza, nie szukałam błędów ( i tak raczej ich nie ma ), po prostu brnęłam razem z bohaterami przez piaski Llano Estacado, chcąc znaleźć tych wszystkich bandytów i znaleźć odpowiedź na to, kto jest upiorem.

( Wszystko jest sensownie wytłumaczone, nie ma wątków nadprzyrodzonych )

Boże, jaka to była dobra książka. Howgh.

It has always amazed me that one of the best writers of westerns is a German, who never even visited the U.S. until long after the fact. Generations of Germans have enjoyed Karl May’s novels, and Karl May studies is a large and prospering industry. Although I’m inclined to believe that Westerns, almost by definition, can’t be worth more than three stars, my objection to The Ghost of Llano Estacado is not Karl May’s story but the edition itself. The volume issued by Nemsi Books is both poorly designed and poorly edited. It contains many typographical errors, and the editors seem deeply confused, for instance, about the proper use of apostrophes. Priced at $27.50 for a slim paperback, this book is not worth purchasing.

Karl May könyvei nekem kimaradtak gyerekkoromban, talán ha az "Ezüst-tó kincse"-t olvastam egyszer, de már magam sem vagyok benne biztos és nem is emlékszek belőle semmire. Gyerekeim nagy rajongói ezeknek a könyveknek, kértem hát tanácsot a 12 éves lányomtól, hogy melyiket lenne érdemes elolvasni, ha csak egy gyors, egyedülálló sztorit szeretnék, és így ajánlotta "A sivatag szelleme"-t. May egyébként német volt, és járt is az Egyesült Államokban, de magán a vadnyugaton például nem, ennek ellenére számít a western műfaj koronázatlan királyának.

Érdekesen indult maga a könyv, kicsit Zorro, kicsit Jules Verne könyveire hajaz (főleg a kaktuszok miatt, aki elolvassa érteni fogja), de mindenképpen egy olyan mű, ami tényleg alkalmas az író életművébe való kezdeti betekintésnek. És hogy miért? Nos, felvonul benne az író számos híres vadnyugati hőse, kezdve akár Winnetouval, vagy épp Old Shatterhand-el. Ezek közismert nevek, de van még mellettük jópár egyéb karakter, aki most nem játszanak ebben hatalmas szerepet, de azért megjelennek. Jó ismerősként, vagy éppen hírnév alapján egymást jó emberként elfogadva sokan felvonulnak a Helmer farmon, tehát egy elég széles tablót kapunk ezekről a hősökről, akikkel gondolom még több alkalommal is fogunk találkozni Karl May könyveiben.

Zorro-t azért hoztam bele, mert maga a történet egy bizonyos sivatagot, a Llano Estacado-t megszállva tartó banditák elintézéséről szól. Ezek a jómadarak félrevezetik az ártatlan utazókat, majd kirabolják őket amikor már elcsigázódtak a vízhiánytól vagy épp az éhségtől. Feltűnik ekkor a "Bosszúálló", aki igyekszik leszálmolni velük, majd pedig megmenteni az utazókat. Kicsit van az embernek egy szuperhős érzése ezekkel a figurákkal, akiknek minden lövésük talál, sőt szinte pontosan előre lehet jelezni, hol fogja érni a banditákat a halál. Szóval összességében egy gyors könyv, ami elég jó bevezető May Károly világába, de maga a sztori inkább csak egy gyors sablon történet. Talán több May könyvet elolvasva jobban tudja majd az ember értékelni. Bátran tudom ajánlani 10-12 éves fiataloknak is.

Na Mayovkách jsem vyrostla, a teď se k některým vracím. Strašná nostalgie, však to znáte. :) Duch Llana Estacada je podle mě jedna z nejlepších vůbec, obzvláště pro mladší čtenáře.
Má všechno - napětí ale i vtipnou lehkost, dobrodružství, zajímavou linku, dobré postavy (Bloody Fox!)... Je to kraťoučká kniha, která se čte prakticky sama.
Až tentokrát jsem si uvědomila, jak hrozně stručné to vlastně je, ani slovo navíc! Ještě nic není vyřešené, do konce zbývá 10 stran, na poslední chvíli se dokonce představuje nová postava...
A stejně se všechno ukončí a je to super. Doporučuji. :)

I forgot how much I love western books! It was nice to read another book from Karol May. I like his writing style, how he always manages to tell the story from the beginning until the end. I also enjoyed his way of directly telling the reader who is good and who is bad. It helped the whole wild west vibe

Jo, jo, May nikdy nezklame.

Duch Llana Estacada rozhodně patří mezi odpočinkové, ale přesto dobrodružné a napínavé knihy. Moc jsem se při čtení bavila a opět jsem se seznámila s novými postavami, které jsem si (jak už u těchto knih bývá zvykem) hodně rychle oblíbila.

Zcela doporučuji všem, kteří chtějí zažít dobrodružství na Divokém západě.

I'm glad I chose this one as my first book to read in May, I love books like this one. I was really surprised when I found out who is the ghost of Llano Estacado, I didn't expected that, but it makes sense. It's probably the best book by Karl May I have ever read.

Mlčenlivého Bloodyho Foxe jsem vždycky milovala, ale jinak jde o poněkud kostrbatou knížku. Možná je to tím, že jsem zvyklá na vydání z roku 1966 (z německého původního vydání volně přeložil Jiří Bernard ; ilustroval Zdeněk Burian).
Bez ilustrací Gustava Kruma bych se ráda obešla, vydání s ilustracemi Zdeňka Buriana je jiný level.

Takže pokud ho zastřelí dřív, než stačí vystřelit podruhé, nedostane se vítěz do prekérní patové situace? ;-)

Karel May has written a lot, really a lot, so it is no wonder that the quality of his books fluctuates. With such a volume, it is impossible to say otherwise. The Ghost of Llana Estacado, thankfully, is one of the best, and even with the increasing number of books read, it maintains its high position on the list. The book contains everything one expects - an Apache chief, Aldo Shatterhand, their other companions and woodsmen, a fight for the right cause and against scoundrels, a denunciation of racism and a defense of moral values, adventure and a bit of mystery - and yet it is brisk, paced and lasts just right.

Вече не си спомням много от тази книга, но някак не блестеше чак толкова на фона на останалите истории на Карл Май.

В съзнанието ми е останала противната сцена, в която Олд Шетърхенд трябваше да пие кръвта на един койот, вместо вода. И човек си задава въпроса до къде би стигнал, за да оцелее.
