People consider Diego Herrera different. Not only is he the son of undocumented Mexican immigrants, but he was also born with deaf mutism. Diego has fought all his life to find his path in the world and to change the world's opinion about him, but he is not alone in his journey. Diego has the help of his supportive mom, his little brother, and his best friend, Fernando, who are always cheering him on.
Diego’s greatest passion in life is soccer, and he seeks to prove he is just as capable as anyone else of reaching his goals. However, he must struggle to do so, as he is beset by naysayers he must prove wrong. Diego is not going to give up on his goals, and it finally seems like he has a chance to reach them.
But will Diego be able to achieve his dream, or will the world’s negativity drag him down?
Diego Herrera faces all kind of struggles a teen could possibly face- struggle of an undocumented immigrant family, lack of enough financial support, bullying and meanness, defiant sibling, and above all, his congenital deafness. Diego rises above all these, establishing himself as a true hero. This book, "Valiance", is a heart warming, easy to follow, and very much age appropriate tale of a teenager, who followed his dreams ignoring all the 'no's around him and made it true through his talent, passion, hard work and of course, with the love and care of his beloved ones.
This book made me believe that winners never quit, and also quitters never win. The book talks about Diego who despite the challenges he encounters in life comes out to be a very successful person in life. I actually loved the way he kept on fighting for his passion without losing hope. This really inspired me a lot and I even had to think it over and over and concluded to myself that everything in life is possible despite the challenges we face. I highly recommend this one.
Valiance was a great book and I highly recommend it anyone looking for a intriguing real life situation book. It was hard to put down and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next in the main character's life.
The author did a great job portraying the main character very realistically. After reading this book, I felt like I knew him in real life from all the detail that was included. This book shows very real problems and issues that are going on in the world today, and it was refreshing to read an underdog story.
It is hard to believe “Valiance” by Vanessa Caraveo is a novel. It is written so well in the first person that I kept looking to see if it was nonfiction! But it is not. It is a story about a fictional boy growing up with deafness and mutism.
I am glad this book contains certain aspects of what life is like for people who cannot hear or speak. People get so freaked out and violent over being touched. The scene where a girl gets angry at Diego for tapping her on her back is quite realistic. We often allow our emotions to get the better of us. There are so many other examples similar to this one which show that a lot of people just don’t think for a minute that maybe the person they are angry at has a disability.
I also liked how a hearing character was hesitant to say that Diego is deaf and instead said “has hearing problems.” This brought to mind an article I read once about how someone was trying to get another term for deafness to catch on, because, for some reason, people don’t like the word “deaf” anymore. I am not one of those people. I am actually proud to say that I am Deaf. It’s not something to be ashamed of or to feel sad about.
Another thing I liked about this story is that the hearing characters share how they know sign language (and I’m glad it’s noted as ASL- American Sign Language- in addition to sign language). It’s not like everybody Diego signs to automatically knows sign language—and that, too, is life-like. I think it’s sweet how one character who knows Diego starts taking a sign language course in order to communicate with him, and it was funny how one character was so proud of knowing sign language that he often shares the story of why he learned it to his students.
When Diego commented in the story that there were “no distractions” during a game, that reminded me of a book I read about Thomas Edison, where he said that being deaf gave him an advantage because then he was not easily distracted as he worked. That is one plus of living with deafness; how I can blissfully enjoy reading a book in the same room where my kids watch TV. Being unable to hear all the noises around the athlete makes it easier for them to stay focused and keep their head in the game. Maybe the coach in this story had rejected Diego from the soccer team so many times because he worried that Diego’s deafness meant he would not hear the whistle, but what Diego lacks in his senses he makes up for in athletic performance.
I thought it was cool how Diego ended up going to college at the University of Oregon (go Ducks!). Diego’s mother has a very hard time cutting the cord and letting him go to college due to being so protective of him and it was refreshing to see his father finally emerge from his shell and put his foot down about letting him go to college.
As the US-born child of illegal Mexican immigrants, Diego not only experiences bullying and discrimination due to his deafness (and because he is nonverbal, he is also referred to as “deaf and dumb” by bullies, a phrase I really wish never existed) but also for being Mexican. You would think that while in college, this would stop, but unfortunately it does not. One bully even writes “Go back to Mexico” on his car. Racism was yet another barrier young Diego had to face while in college and I kept reading to see how he handled this latest round and if he was ever able to overcome it.
I think that, at the very heart of the matter, Diego tries so hard to prove himself because he feels that he has to. As the child of undocumented immigrants, a Mexican living in a tough neighborhood, and someone with not one but two disabilities, he has the odds stacked against him. So it is likely he feels the need to push himself and fight for a better standing in life, something that not everyone in his position can achieve. And by accomplishing so much, he does indeed become a role model to many.
I appreciated that he refused to settle for anything other than what he wanted in life. He KNOWS what he wants. He wants to attend a regular school just like all the other kids and not a school just for Deaf kids. He wants to play on a normal soccer team that everybody else is playing on, and not in Deaflympics. These are things he has to fight for. These are also similar things that many in the Deaf community feel: we don’t want to be segregated, we want to be included and accepted. Of the many themes in this story, I am grateful the author included this one most of all.
“Valiance” by Vanessa Caraveois an inspiring story of a kid with dual disabilities giving his all to achieve his dream. He has to fight against many barriers and his is a story of how one little boy with a soccer ball and a dream can grow up to be anything that he wants to be – even something that nobody ever thinks can truly happen.
The author of The Awesome Reading Adventures of Super Sammy and Marvelous Meg has returned with a new book titled “Valiance”. Unlike her shorter children’s stories, Valiance is a young adult novel that will appeal to tweens, teens, and adults. In Valiance, author Vanessa Caraveo has highlighted the challenges the disabled face in society. Valiance is a touching and inspirational story. It follows young Diego, a mute, deaf boy that is trying to find his path in life. It’s not only his disabilities that present challenges, but also his status as the son of undocumented immigrants. His Mexican heritage and non-citizenship status are additional challenges Diego has to overcome. Diego’s dream is to play soccer, regardless of his disabilities. While numerous people are telling him his goals in life are impossible, Diego also has plenty of support. Throughout the novel, Diego’s mom, little brother, and best friend Fernando are by his side. They provide the support he needs to keep going on. Vanessa Caraveo is an acclaimed author of children’s books and her young adult novel continues her tradition of telling heartwarming stories. Valiance is well-thought-out. Readers are never left with confusion or unanswered questions. It is also a story with two strong messages. The first is to never judge someone due to their differences. The second is to never let these differences hold you back from your reaching your dreams. “I worked my way there through my persistence, always remaining steadfast to my goals. Likewise, I hadn’t hoped to have everything I had now. However, with hard work, determination, and the unwavering support of those who loved me, I had managed to make my fondest dream a reality.” Valiance is also a novel about hope. It teaches readers that with hard work and determination, anyone can find their way in life. The author also shows how challenges can help make people stronger. The messages it gives readers are meant to make them reflect on how they treat others, along with giving them a little push to pursue their dreams. Vanessa Caraveo has woven a story that is simple but complex. It accurately portrays the struggles some families experience, especially when one member has disabilities. While Diego’s life may not have turned out exactly how he imagined. He suffered loss and humiliation but he never gave up. Valiance is a story that everyone can relate to. It gives readers a new perspective on what it is like to be a young immigrant with special needs. It also reminds us that everyone can succeed if someone believes in them.
This is the story of Diego Herrera, and this book starts with the quote “how did I get here?” how his life changed 14 years ago when he witnessed his first soccer game. And from that moment we’ll get to know his story, Diego's life, who was born with deaf mutism, through the pages we’ll know how he managed to fulfill his dreams and get to where he is today.
For me this book is written in such a beauty way and the chapters are not long so it’s a very quickly read. In a few pages you manage to delve into a small part of Diego's life. We’ll meet his family, his friends who supported him, his love life, and so many important moments, everything he had to go through, and how he faced some difficult times.
I cried and laughed with this book, it left me great teachings, where many can feel identified, because Diego is a boy full of dreams, with goals in life, and he’ll do everything possible to fulfill them, he won’t give up despite all the obstacles that come his way.
This book teaches us that no matter how many times people say that you are not capable or not enough, you shouldn’t give up, and you should keep going. Because nothing in this life is easy, but with perseverance and dedication everything can be achieved. Reading Diego's story has inspired me in many ways.
I consider it a necessary reading, it is very worth it, it’s a story that makes us reflect on bullying, accept people, and fight for your dreams.
Here is one of my favorite quotes: “I told him of how I’d kept trying and trying even when the coach asked me to give up, telling me that I couldn’t be on the team. I told him how I’d finally got in during my last year in school and how my teammates accepted me. Then I had gotten noticed during a game and had to try harder than anyone else on the U-20 Men’s National Team.”
An additional fact is that to me is an ideal book for those who have an intermediate level of English and want to start reading in this language.
This novel is a beautiful read from all angles, an untapped topic that is filled with depth and emotion as displayed by the author. Even if you’re not an immigrant yourself, you will be drawn in by the culture and humanity subtly highlighted between the pages.
Author Vanessa Caraveo took on great courage and unleashed a top-shelf inspirational novel, “Valiance”. As I began reading this book, I found I could not put it down until I reached the back page. Each chapter is filled with grit, peace, and of course, valiance.
The book is basically about Diego Herrera. He is born different and indeed special in every kind of way. He has lived up to the time of birth, by being a valiant boy. He is of Mexican ethnicity and is loved by his mom, brother, and friends. Sadly, the conflict of the story mirrors the real life situation of children living with a disability who are sometimes ignored, judged, teased, belittled, or envied. That is the torn in his spirit – but Diego’s passion for soccer and Mother’s love will spiral him to greatness beyond his critics’ imagination.
I love the storyline. It is indeed different but not mute in the message disseminated. A disability is this ability to achieve one’s goals and aspirations. The author also highlights a few other sub-topics such as parenting, growing up Hispanic in America, and the dangers of peer pressure.
This book is a great read for all ages to see a world beyond their immediate experiences. I also recommend this book for educators, parents, and those nurturing children with special needs. Have a dose of valiance.
I really enjoyed this book. It follows Diego Herrera, a young man born deaf and mute, and his persistence in following his dreams to not only play professional soccer but to also not be treated differently because of his loss of hearing. I thought it would really hone in on the soccer aspect, but I was wrong, the book is more slice of life. As Diego grows up, we witness certain challenges and adventures - from his first party to dating to learning to drive to college experiences and more, and of course his growth in soccer. I found that I wanted to hear more from Diego and listen to his story. He never pities himself and doesn't allow others to either. And I thought his responses to some of the more upsetting instances in his life was rather refreshing. He truly refused to let anything stand in the way of his dreams. Also, I think one of the most interesting aspects of his life, and one of the most emotional, was the relationship he had with his sister, Margarita. I won't get into it so as not to spoil anything, but for all the common sense and kindness that Diego has, he fails time and again to show empathy towards his sister, as she does towards him. I think it is likely a very realistic portrayal of a sibling relationship, but at this same time I so wanted them to just talk to each other and work their stuff out. All in all, Valiance is a really inspiring read and enjoyable too.
While life is full of advertise that we must overcome, there is an inherent strength built on those who remain steadfast to their goals and persevere. After all, hardships have a way of preparing ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. After reading this book I truly came to understand that success is achieved by the courage one takes in order to achieve his or her goals. Valiance by author Vanessa Caraveo is one of the true inspirational books that you will love reading without even getting tired of it. The book talks about Diego despite his condition, he keeps on struggling with his life just to change his opinion. When I read the book I just felt emotional with the way Diego kept on struggling all through. What even makes me feel happy is how he gets support from his mom, brother and his best friend who are always seen cheering on him. It just feels very nice when you have the kind of friends who are always on your side just to support you despite the difficulties one encounters in life. I just love the creativity of this author, I give it a five stars.
Valiance is an absolutely lovely book! The writing is clear, concise, and illustrative. The characters are likable and compelling. The story is engaging and emotionally fulfilling.
The thing that I loved most about Valiance is the main character of Diego Herrera. Diego Herrera is the only son of undocumented Mexican immigrants, and he is also deaf and mute. We don't see very many characters, in fiction, who deal with these kinds of problems. Because of that, his character is incredibly fascinating, and the book inspires a great deal of empathy and understanding, due to Diego's difficult and, for most of us, unfamiliar circumstances.
Of course, just as the title implies, Diego is not held back by these limitations. Instead, he chooses to pursue his dreams, regardless of how far-off they seem, and he does so with courage, confidence, and perseverance!
If you are looking for a well-written and inspiring novel that is easy and engaging to read, then you can't go wrong with Valiance!
Such an inspiring read ! We follow the life of Diego a boy who wants to become a professional soccer player . His journey is not an easy one as he is deaf and mute but he doesn’t let these things hold him back ! Despite people constantly putting him down and the difficulties and challenges of not only his disabilities but also being the son of an undocumented immigrant as he faces these obstacles head on . Not only through his sheer determination but also with the support of his mother , younger brother , and his best friend Fernando ! The author does a great job to deliver the message that hard work and determination and being as the title says “valiant” you can reach any goal you set your mind too . Truly an enjoyable read as it feels more of a slice of life than a regular sports novel . You feel a connection grow between you and the main protagonist and an ever growing interest into Diego’s life . Just an all around wonderful and refreshing story!

I love books where the protagonist isn’t a perfect young adult cliché and has to overcome obstacles, it makes them much more relatable and the reading experience much more enjoyable. These are the kinds of books which teach us lessons about ourselves and the world around us, and Valiance is certainly one of those books.
Diego is a fantastic role model for those who are struggling or who have faced adversity and hardship in their lives. Born the son of undocumented migrants and being both deaf and mute, the odds are stacked against him and Diego has to learn to navigate a desperately challenging world. But he doesn’t let that stand in the way of his goals; his determination, along with the support of his family and Fernando, allows his dreams to come true.
Valiance is an inspiration and addictive story, one which you’ll struggle to put down once and start and whose message will stay with long after you have finished reading.
Wow, such an engaging and inspiring story! Born during hardships seem to set the tone for the uphill battle he would fight during his young life. Diego is immediately likable and you’re rooting for him right away. He’s a sweet soul with a strong spirit of fight within in. This especially resonated with me because my family is huge into soccer and reading this made me think of other great soccer players, if you’re familiar with Messi’s backstory or even Cristiano Ronaldo’s- although, Diego’s journey here is very unique, not just due to his background but because of his own personal disabilities- that, of course, was not going to stop him. Although a short book, you go through so much with Diego because this story is so well written so it will definitely keep you entertained. Love this and can’t wait to recommend to all the young athletes I know.
This novel is a story full of adventure, friendships, and the classic tale of perseverance. As a person with so many problems, he definitely defies all odds to become a well-rounded student and athlete. The author writes with so much emotion and tact that it feels like you as a reader are part of Diego's journey. Diego is born as someone with disabilities to undocumented immigrants. This in itself shows what a fighter he is and what all his parents sacrificed to get him the best life possible. It shows how important it is to understand that everyone has different struggles and we should appreciate those who overcome these struggles and support those kinds of people. I, for one, truly enjoyed this read and would highly recommend this novel to even Middle Schoolers! Vanessa Caravero is an amazing writer and I cannot wait to read more of her books.
An inspirational story that will encourage you to follow your dreams. 'Valiance' by Vanessa Caraveo is a sensational life story of a boy named Diego. Diego was born deaf, and due to this reason, he faces a lot of consequences. But impressively, he resisted all of the challenges of his life with his firm determination and family support. He attained his dreams proficiently. "Turn your so-called difficulties into weapons. We should work hard to achieve our dreams not only because of our challenges but also despite them." 'Valiance' motivates us to never give up on yourself and to try again and again until you succeed. With an appreciative writing style by the author, this book will keep you captivating till the end. If you have a dream, you cannot skip this book. It will show you how to dream and how to listen to your intuition. It is recommended to everyone out there.
I have always loved stories of resilience and "Valiance" is certainly one that kept me engaged and made me appreciate the author for writing such a touching tale. The book focuses on the everyday life of Diego who was born deaf and mute as he strives to overcome many of life's perils.
Something that I really enjoyed throughout the book was the inclusion of a loving support system. I've read stories similar to this one, except the main character is often left to face their struggles alone or with the support from only one other person. I loved that Diego had several people in his life that could properly communicate with him to help him keep going and know that he was loved. Overall, "Valiance" was very enjoyable and I'm glad I was able to discover this amazing story.
Valiance! What an experience to read. The characters are quite original and I was pleasantly surprised when the dialogue wasn't cliché or copy/paste from other young adult literature. The story has a depth to it because it is approached from a different angle and I really enjoyed the storytelling. The one downside is the length because I would really like if the story could have continued longer. The author is meticulous about the details and back-story of every individual in the book and this leads to a believable tale that one can sink their teeth into. In addition to the detail, the situations the main hero is placed in are both believable and genuine. A quick read that gives a powerful voice.
The inspirational story of a boy and his determination. This book would be great for reading to children of all ages and especially to those that may suffer from a disability. Children with special needs are very capable and the story of Diego shows what motivation and family support can accomplish. Immigrants are often the topic of many political figures but the truth is that immigrants and their families bring great value to this country. Let's not forget that where one is born does not determine its value. People from all over the world have great qualities that should be shared with others. Family support is key to success!
After reading Valiance I believe I found another author I found an interest in. Vanessa Caraveo shows you just how well she can put together a story but also inspire's and shows that it doesn’t matter who you are that if you have the drive, ambition, and dreams to not let anything define you even with a disability. That you can overcome anything life has to throw at you. Diego has proven that his disability was not going to put him in a box or have society do the same. Overall, this is a must-read book especially for someone who feels like they cannot overcome certain struggles or needs some inspiration from another lens on life. A recommended grab for the reading list!!!
Let me say, first off, just the layers added into the story really make this a worthwhile read. This book shows you that life is full of adversity that we must overcome, and that is depicted clearly and without pause in Vanessa Caraveo’s book, Valiance. While reading this book I came to understand that success is really achieved by the courage one takes in order to achieve his or her goals. Despite Diego’s disability he keeps on struggling with his life just to change his place in it. On top of this trial of deaf/mutism, he happens to be the son of Mexican immigrants. Through this life he lives, we see how society can be cruel to those who don’t fit the conventional living standards. The insight into what it’s like to grow up with undocumented immigrants as parents or as someone viewed as “disabled” was really meaningful.
I really liked this book because it is about a young person achieves what he wants despite his "handicaps" rose above them through sheer determination and not taking no for an answer. Soccer became his salvation and his strength to make his life mean something to him and his family. Society tends to just shove people aside who have "handicaps" either physical, mental or where they come from because they believe that person is worth looking at. This young man showed that he had what take to do these things and soccer became his salvation and his strength to make his life mean something to him and his fam
Valiance by author Vanessa Caraveo follows the journey of our protagonist Diego Herrera to fulfil his passion and become a successful soccer player. But the catch is he suffers from deaf mutism. In a world where everyone is always ready to pass judgements on what you can or cannot achieve this book stands out as an inspiration. It highlights how magical persistence, dedication and support can be. The narrative is an engaging and immensely inspirational. It’s a delight to come across such books that not only represents marginalised and underrepresented voices but does that so responsibly. I liked the writing style of the author and look forward to more of her books.
In addition to giving us an up close and personal glimpse of the life of someone with a disability, this story also makes us aware of the problems with immigration that still exist and how reform is needed as this continues to be a huge issue in the U.S. I've always been amazed of what those with disabilities and who face adversity are able to accomplish and the main character in this story, Diego, was a perfect example of this. A valiant young man he was who despite his disability soared high in life and made his dreams a reality. I loved this story and am sure others will find it as inspiring with a great message for all ages.
Vanessa Caraveo in her book ‘Valiance’ highlights the challenges of those who are differently abled in the society and how hard work and resilience can lead to success. We follow the story of Diego Herrera. Diego is born unlucky. He is both deaf and mute. On top of all the trials he faces in life, he happens to be the son of Mexican immigrants. This together with personal struggles make life unbearable for the young man. Through his life, we see how society can be cruel to those who don’t fit the conventional living standards. Diego however beats all odds and becomes the best version of himself. His love for soccer and his skills when playing them enable him to change the narrative.
This book is incredibly touching. It truly puts things into perspective as you are taken on a journey about a boy who has to overcome so much despite being given so little. Readers can really connect with and learn from the main character. I also think the topic is highly relevant to issues going on the world today. The story flows smoothly and is easy to stay engaged with. Perfect for a teen reader looking for a novel about overcoming challenges through sports. Congrats to Vanessa on another successful book!
Valiance by Vanessa Caraveo was an excellent read that I, myself, enjoyed, along with my younger brother. I originally purchased it for him but quickly got into the book after skimming a few pages. Cheering on Diego and his perseverance all throughout the story, this novel is a tale of inspiration. It also is a testament to the power and universality of sports such as soccer. This was an excellent novel with well-developed characters and a creative storyline. I recommend it to readers of all ages!
Valiance is a beautiful, warm-hearted tale about facing challenges to meet your objectives. A great reading for young adults that shows you what life can do with determination and dedication. Diego is a wonderful example that never gives up when the struggles of life try to get him down.
The book is moving me. Diego, an immigrant boy who must face social problems and is a big fan of football, is told by the author.
It's a motivational and insightful tale that shows how to face life's challenges, I couldn't stop reading. I was always doing that until it finished the book.
This is a wonderful and truly inspiring book! The story follows the life of Diego, a young boy who is the son of immigrants. Diego is born with a disability, and is presented with many struggles and challenges as he grows up. Diego works hard to overcome the challenges of his disability and to pursue his dreams. This book was well-written and powerful, and really puts aspects of your own life into perspective as you read. I rated this book five stars because it was a highly enjoyable book with an intriguing plot line that kept me hooked the entire time.
If you’re looking for an inspirational story where you will truly care about the characters, then Valiance is a book you will want to read. Vanessa Caraveo creates a story about a young product of Mexican immigrants, Diego, who was born deaf and mute. Written through the eyes of Diego, the reader really gets a sense of the difficulties he overcomes by persevering. Soccer is his life’s ambition and is seamlessly interwoven into the storyline. This book is a great read for both young and mature adults.
This book truly does explain one of the most important lessons for children and young adults to learn. No matter how different they are and may not fit in, if they persevere they only become stronger and can reach their goals. I think it is also important for kids to realize that just because someone may be different does not mean that they are not capable. In today's world, if you put your mind to your dream and never get give up anything is possible! Valiance was well written and I definitely recommend this to all young adults for such an inspiring and heartwarming story.
