2 1/2 stars. I didn't like this one as much as the others in the series. The culprit was obvious and I'm not a huge fan of stories where someone is made to think that they are losing their minds. Plus, I miss Miss Alice's young man. They had good chemistry and the books aren't quite as good when he isn't there.

Better Heroine But Slow Story

I have read the other books in the series, and I like how the author has allowed the main character to evolve and grow. In that regard, I think this book was the most pleasant so far. This book takes our heroine outside of New York and back to England because she gets a frantic telegram from her sister. Having already lost one sibling, she is fearful of losing another. But when she arrives, things aren't quite as dire as that, although strange things are going on with her normally smart, no-nonsense sister.

I thought the book started with a bit of an information dump, where we were told rather than shown how the heroine got to the train station platform that she’s on at the start of the book. I would have even preferred seeing this take place in a conversation with her parents when she arrived or something else. The book felt a little slow at times, though I was reading it on a rainy evening with a lovely cup of tea, so I didn't mind that as much as I normally would have. I do enjoy this series and like some of the new facets here. I look forward to reading the next book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I have to say I have mixed feelings in regard to this story of the Alice series. I liked it, enjoyed the alternate location, appreciated the chance to see Alice interact with her sister, and found the supernatural element to bring a new component to the stories. It's nice when an author switches up the mystery. I really liked it for those reasons as well as Alice's usual unflinching convictions.

It was nice to have another part of the English countryside to visit. I appreciate the author giving us new settings with a few of her books and switching up where the whodunit takes place. It's part of the hook and allure of her novels to investigate in these new locations.

Another nice part of the story is how Alice is away from Sherborne and has a bit of clarification on her feelings for him. I have appreciated their steady and growing relationship without it being overt, overdone, or too prominent a piece of the storyline. For me, the mystery first is always my favorite plot. Again, the only thing I haven't liked is Alice's rudeness to him at times, in other books. I'm hoping a balance with emerge and a mutual compromise in their professional and personal interactions can be reached. However, there is a surprising and sweet twist to their story. I'll let you read and figure it out for yourself.

Back to the main plot, I was a bit frustrated by a few of the secondary characters of this story. It was irritating to see Alice trying to help and perform the assistance she was asked to do and be hindered on all sides. Those who wanted her there and wanted her help were involved in this condescending attitude and rude behavior as well. There was more to the story than was readily available, which I appreciated, and it was a brilliantly plotted book. I loved the added dimensions too. It would have been nice to gain more information of the sub-characters though. I felt there was much more some of them could have brought to the plot, but I do understand the way the author conducted it. After all, there's only a certain amount of pages to put everything together in and find that happy ending.

I suppose my initial irritation with the secondary characters and some loose ends were where I became a little undecided if I loved it or just liked it. Although, as it continued, the culprit twist was a bit astounding, despite it being a 50/50 chance of who it could be, and it brought a satisfactory ending.

Basically, it was a good continuation of the series, worked itself out well, and was a quick read. I really liked it and enjoyed the outcome. It continues the 4-star rating of the well-written series.

Murder by Twilight earns 5/5 Telegrams...Engaging Fun!

Blythe Baker’s fifth book in her Miss Alice Murder Mystery series continues to delight. Alice Beckingham receives a telegram “...The matter is urgent.” from her sister Catherine, so she “urgently” takes her leave of her Aunt Sarah and sets sail back to England. There she struggles to discover who is threatening her sister, recognizing that many have their own agenda...another complex and entertaining adventure. Newbies can start here with this engaging drama, but I highly recommend starting the series from the beginning. So much is going on and understanding how previous interactions have effected characters makes everything more enjoyable, more complete. But this book? I loved it! A bit of Miss Fisher, a bit Sherlock Holmes, and a bit James Bond with a clever drama, interesting characters, and enough secrets and mysteries to leave you guessing.

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

When Alice received a telegram asking her to come to Yorkshire, urgently, she knew that something was very wrong. When she arrived, she found Catherine, her sister, a shadow of her former self, and everyone in the house whispering and treating her as if she were crazy. But Alice knew her sister well and knew that she was not prone to fancy ideas and hallucinations. So that could only mean that someone will evil intentions was trying to make out she was crazy... unless Catherine truly had become so.

I love Blythe's Alice Beckingham, plucky, clever, sharp and with her head and heart in the right place. Another good read, this time set in Yorkshire, with its stark and yet sometimes creepy atmosphere. And I miss having Sherbourne as part of this adventure - I wish Alice would give him and herself a chance - I rather like the man!

Catherine is in trouble!!! Can Alice figure out what is going on? Are there really ghosts on the moors? Are there wild spirits running free and wrecking havoc on her sister's family? Who are all the people living in her sister's household? Who are the neighbors and what are they up to? Are they sinister or just strange?
This cozy feels a bit more victorian gothic with a touch of the macabre! As always, the descriptions are phenomenal and the reader can actually feel the moors come alive.
Alice has matured quite a lot, and her approach to this new mystery stems from her unwavering belief and trust in her sister.
Will there be a surprise at the end as well?
Enjoyable continuation of this series

I have been reading a lot of historical mysteries set in the 1920s and 1930s. I am enjoying the Miss Alice series. Alice is brash and speaks her mind. She is too curious for her own good and bumbles her way into murders but comes to the right conclusions in the end. This story was set in the Yorkshire mours, where her sister, husband and newborn are living in a remote manor. Alice was urgently invited to visit, once she arrives, she realizes things are worse than she could have imagined. Alice's sister keeps to her room with a nurse caring for her, the baby daughter is being cared for by a nanny and a sister-in-law, and Alice's brother-in-law believes her sister, Catherine, has gone mad. Alice investigates.

Alice goes to Yorkshire at her sister's request. When she arrives, she finds that her sister is "ill" and confined to her room, tended by Nurse Gray, and her sister-in-law giving almost full care to Alice's infant niece, Hazel. The plot thickens as Alice determines that everyone in the house seems to feel that Catherine has gone over the edge. When Alice has an experience similar to that of Catherine, everyone thinks that Alice has gone over, too. Are the Wild sisters involved? Who is causing all of this drama, and what is the motive? Suspenseful.

Alice responds to her sister’s urgent request to visit. She discovers disturbing facts about what has been going on with Catherine. Everyone around Catherine has their own agenda, motives that form a puzzle Alice must solve to save her sister and even herself. Murder By Twilight is an excellent mystery that builds suspense to an exciting climax. I have enjoyed this entire series.

Great Series! Can't wait for the next one!

I love series that bump into or are offshoots of an original series. And I think there are characters from a whole other author that these also touch. I think so, maybe I'm just reading too much and am confused. But really, though I've not said anything about the story, or stories. They are wonderful. You can start anywhere but I prefer to start at the beginning... Enjoy!

A story line that has suspense, mystery, and intrigue. It's well written and captivates the reader as you try and figure how what's going on, at the same time Alice is trying to figure out the same. A read that will keep you on your toes.

Interesting book

This was good but not as compelling as the first4. Maybe it was the subject of "ghosts" that I wasn't that fond of that's made it a less likable book. Also, other previous characters were missing. I'm glad I read it but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first 4. Can't wait for Book 6 coming in June .

The story being told could have actually happened...the author caught all the power of real life dangers we all experience.there were parts of the story that were hard to read that is the real world.

I liked the realism and get there was still a lot of mystery in the story to keep you bonded to it..that is why I have it a high rating.

WOW

This book is fun! I love all these cozy mysteries, but this is my favourite so far. Alice is still a little clumsy with her investigating but getting better all the time. I'll keep reading and you should too.

Boring

Predictable, dull, and unexciting. The earlier books on this series were better. The author just seems to be painting by numbers but some of them are not in sequence.

This was the best Miss Alice thus far. Set on the moors of Yorkshire, the vibes were gothic, and everyone is just a little mad.

An interesting change of pace for Miss Alice, somewhat Gothic, somewhat psychological, set in an isolated house with a tormented family. Added to this are eccentric self-sufficient neighbours and the brooding moor. Miss Alice is called upon to display a lot of courage, both moral and physical. She needs to work on keeping an open mind, though. She is too ready to accept a conventional interpretation of events, until she has a strange experience of her own.

Despite the cover, the intriguing Sherborne Sharp does not actually appear until the end, after everything is done and dusted. For fans, though, it will be worth the wait.
