Harley riding Olivia Wolfe is one tough and fearless investigative journalist. Trained in unarmed combat, it's a brave man (or woman) that takes her on. She's already survived previous attempts to harm or kill her through the course of her work in dangerous locations, but in this second episode in the series, she will be pushed to the limit by a very depraved individual.

When Olivia is tipped off my a woman with inside knowledge that a British Cabinet minister might be involved in money laundering, she knows she has the start of an explosive story in her hands. After her source is found dead she realises that she is going to be investigating some dangerous and powerful people, but has no idea how violent they can be until she comes across some horrific photos of four extremely mutilated bodies. Her investigation will take her to South Africa and to a ruthless cartel raking in millions through its illegal activities.

Larkin's first book Devour introduced us to Olivia, as well as Detective Superintendent Dan Casburn, Head of British anti-terrorist force, SO24 and Olivia's Russian lover Vitaly Yushkov who are both involved in the plot. Casburn and Olivia are locked into a real love-hate relationship as Casburn is both antagonistic to Olivia, trying to get her to keep her nose out of police business and admiring of her willingness to put herself in danger for a just cause and those who need help. Yushkov is shadowy and secretive in this novel and Olivia is unsure about what he is really up to.

In addition to these well drawn characters, the action is fast paced and immersive and very tense as Olivia meets the psychopathic assassin who kills for the cartel. An excellent thriller, especially if you don't mind them on the dark and gritty side.

Journalist for The Post in London, Olivia Wolfe had always searched for the most dangerous stories; determined to expose crimes that flew under the radar. On the trail of a powerful story, she interviewed a source who was subsequently murdered. For Olivia Wolfe, that mean game on. The murders she needed to expose were horrific, brutal and unbelievably cruel. The person who had done the murders had been told to eliminate Olivia. Fearful but never showing it, Olivia would never back down.

Officials in government; police officers; there were many who were corrupt. Their hidden bank balances were proof of that. But could Olivia expose those responsible? Could she avenge those friends who’d been brutally murdered? She could only trust a few people…

Prey by Aussie author L.A. Larkin is the 2nd in the Olivia Wolfe series and oh my goodness! It was breathtakingly brilliant! Fast paced, full on action from the first page to the last, I couldn’t put it down. Olivia is a strong, determined and gutsy woman, easy to like and cheer on. Prey is an incredible thriller which I very highly recommend. Bring on #3!!

With thanks to the author for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Prey is the second book in the Olivia Wolfe series by L.A. Larkin.
Olivia Wolfe is an investigative journalist that goes above and beyond the initial hunt for a
good story. She wants truths revealed and criminals outed even if it means putting her own life in danger.

Prey reads quite well as a stand alone however there are mentions of events from the previous book, Devour.

On the trail of what looks like a money laundering operation with a prominent British MP involved, Wolfe heads to South Africa to investigate links to a school Head Master. Det Dan Casburn, a British SO24 officer, is also sent to South Africa to investigate. Casburn warns Wolfe off but she is relentless in her pursuit to uncover this story of corruption.

As her investigations continue, those involved are soon linked to a number of gruesome murders and a psychopathic killer with a fascination for the dark web.

Prey is a grisly tale of corruption, murder, money laundering and animal paoching that spans continents.
Olivia Wolfe is a protagonist not to be messed with and I loved her steel and determination, although I did find myself willing her to give up and go home as my nerves were continually on edge.

Fast paced, chilling and tense, Prey is not for the squeamish.

Olivia Wolfe is an investigative journalist who has been looking into a series of savage murders scattered across four countries.

She knows they are connected, and her confidential anonymous source has information for her. Unfortunately, her source is murdered, leaving her with the knowledge that she has no one she can trust.

Olivia has made a lot of enemies .... but she has one enemy who will not stop targeting her until she is dead silent .. or just dead.

This is the second book in this series, following DEVOUR. There are many references to the first book, but I would highly recommend reading these in order. I was a bit confused and I was wishing I'd known this was not the first or a stand alone. The plot is tightly woven, it was the characters, although skillfully drawn, that I felt suffered.

There is lots of action and this is one way of traveling without leaving your home. There are twists and turns that will leave your head reeling, leading to an explosive conclusion.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Investigative journalist Olivia Wolfe is back in L.A. Larkin’s latest exciting action thriller, Prey.

When the source that alerted her to a corrupt British Cabinet Minister dies in suspicious circumstances, Olivia ignores the warning from Global Threat Taskforce agent Casburn to drop the story, and instead chases it all the way to South Africa. With the help of friend and local police officer, Thusago, Olivia links the Minister’s tax haven account to a school principal in Soweto, and from there hunts down the powerful cabal who are playing a very dangerous and deadly game.

Short chapters and breathtaking moments of tension ensures Prey is a fast-paced read. Olivia’s investigation takes her across Africa as she tracks the clues that will lead to the mysterious head of the syndicate behind murder, money laundering and illegal poaching. And as Olivia attempts to avoid corrupt locals, and Casburn, with whom she has a complicated relationship stemming from the events in Devour, she’s unaware she has drawn the attention of a sadistic assassin sent to silence her.

The assassin is a horrifying character who takes delight in his macabre work, and streams it live over the Dark Web. Sensitive readers may want to skim a few descriptive paragraphs here and there, but his final confrontation with Olivia is a nerve-wracking encounter not to be missed.

While Olivia is not always sure who to trust, she does have allies in London, her mentor Butcher and his associate Ponnappa, helping her with investigation, and in South Africa, Vitaly Yushkov, Olivia’s former lover, steps in twice to save her life. I love that Olivia refuses to give up no matter the obstacles, she’s a kickass character who follows her conscience and the truth no matter the consequences.

While Prey is a sequel to Devour, which introduces Olivia in a similarly high intensity thriller, it’s not necessary to have read it to enjoy this (though I recommend you do).
An action packed story with a plot of intrigue and a dynamic lead character, Prey is a gripping and exciting read

Prey is the latest scintillating suspense novel from the author of Devour, L.A. Larkin. An edgy story filled with corruption, crime, murder, conspiracies, money laundering and illegal poaching, Prey thrills from page one to the final word.

Prey follows the exciting and dangerous life of investigative journalist Olivia Wolfe. A feisty lead with an inherent desire to get to the bottom of vicious crimes and exposing the truth to the public floor is Olivia Wolfe’s game. As a result, Olivia has gained plenty of enemies and her life is constantly under threat. When one of Olivia’s informants is murdered, Olivia knows she must uncover the truth behind the death of her source. It is a quest that takes her from the UK to Africa, while more horrific murders occur. Hot on Olivia’s tail is an assassin who hopes to scare her off the case. But Olivia is determined to see through this investigation, despite knowing that her life hangs in the balance the closer she gets to the truth.

Prey is my first taste of the writing of thriller novelist L.A. Larkin. Prey is the second book penned by the author to feature enigmatic lead Olivia Wolfe and it follows on loosely from Devour, the previous novel penned by Larkin. There is plenty of page time devoted to setting the scene and providing readers with a solid backstory. Readers who are new Larkin’s work and the character of Olivia Wolfe will find it relatively easy to connect to Prey.

What a thrill ride this book presents! Prey was exhilarating, exciting, pacy and twisty. The movement in this book is relentless and it travels along at a solid pace, thanks to Larkin’s swift writing style and short chapter format. The reader is soon thrown in the chaos of lead Olivia Wolfe’s life, but her adventures are dangerous, sometimes gruesome and full bodied. Larkin packs her narrative with a wide array of themes and sub plots. Prey outlines many explosive moments of extortion, government cover-ups, wealth acquisition, the corporate world, informer activities, underhanded politicians, big business and illegal animal trade/poaching. The focus on endangered animals and illegal poaching really got under my skin, especially the references to the rhinoceros trade, which seemed to move me much more than I expected. This sub plot was handled extremely well by L.A. Larkin.

Prey is quite a cosmopolitan novel and it has a strong international flavour. From Britain to Africa, the reader is transported from city to city and country to country in no time. This travel hopping was enjoyable and it helped keep the momentum of the novel going at high speed. I didn’t feel my attention dip at any point and I really enjoyed my time in Africa, this is where the story really comes into its own. It also allows us to see where Larkin’s extensive research fits into the whole equation of this book. I believe from reading Larkin’s author bio that she worked on patrol at wildlife reserves and learnt how to handle a rifle! The sequences set in Africa were incredibly vivid and realistic.

Olivia Wolfe sure is a force to be reckoned with. She is determined, enterprising, courageous, fearless and feisty. Although I found Olivia Wolfe admirable, I wouldn’t want to be her for a day, her line of work is far too dangerous! I felt pretty scared for her in many moments of the story, but she was able to stand on her own two feet and show everyone what she is made of! The supporting cast is also well drawn, which is aided by Larkin’s clear writing style. There are little touches of romance and even humour in this novel which helps to offset some of the darker moments of the story. Larkin manages to balance all the key elements of this novel really well, hurtling the reader to a remarkable conclusion. What a nail biting thrill ride! Hopefully we will see another adventure on the cards for dynamic lead Olivia Wolfe!

‘Her line of work can be dangerous.’

Olivia Wolfe is an investigative journalist. She ‘s renowned for exposing the criminal and the corrupt. In her line of work, she gets a lot of tips. Some work out, most do not. Olivia Wolfe has an interesting past: she has acquired some extremely useful survival skills, and she has several enemies.

Following a tip, she starts looking into the affairs of a British Cabinet Minister. And then her anonymous source is murdered. She’s warned off as well, but this just makes Ms Wolfe even more determined to find the truth. She follows a clue to South Africa. And becomes one of the hunted.

There are more murders, horrific ritualised murders which, while providing cryptic clues, are also leading Ms Wolfe into danger. Can she find the truth in South Africa? Powerful people are involved, people who believe that they able to buy whatever they want, people with absolutely no scruples.

Be warned: this is not for the squeamish. It’s an intriguing novel full of action with some very interesting characters. I finished this novel, keen to read ‘Devour’ (the first in the series) and hoping for more to follow. Olivia Wolfe is a feisty character.

When I was contacted about Prey by L A Larkin I assumed I'd read Larkin's previous book, Devour as I recognised its cover. So when I started reading and realised Prey was a sequel, I flicked back to my site (and through Goodreads) for my review to get some context.

It was only then I realised I hadn't read its predecessor. It was a little problematic initially as there were a lot of references to events in Devour (marketed as Olivia Wolfe #1) and I almost put Prey aside as a result. I'm glad I didn't however as I grew to increasingly like our lead character, Olivia and was keen to discover what she uncovered.

Plot

Olivia Wolfe is a Journalist. She exposes many crimes across the world.

And this crime is no different, going against powerful people and killing her source and many other homicides along the way in multiple countries. She won't stop until she exposes the whole truth, why and how.

The plot is very interesting and it has many themes woven into the story, murder, assassination, corrupt police, politicians. Private investigation etc around many countries.  Essentially, it has is it all in one neat little bow.

I wholly enjoyed it even if I was confused at the beginning as I had/have not read the first one in this series but honestly L.A.Larkin gives you enough backstory and information that you don't really need too.

What I loved the most is the detailed descriptions of all the places mentioned in this book and the people who live there.

Characters

I love Olivia Wolfe, she is an exceptional character but there are plenty of other likeable characters such as Butcher and her Cyber Hacker which is basically Olivia's family after Ex-Met Police Officer now a Private Investigator saved her from the streets as a teenager and stopping her going off the deep end and helping her build a career where she travels around the world as a journalist.

I love the relationship between the policeman who is on medical leave and Olivia Wolfe who is helping her investigate.

Superintendent Dan Casburn who is apart of SO24 who formerly worked with Olivia Wolfe before is an absorbing, captivating and arduous character as well as there relationship.

There are so many unique, fascinating characters in this book that I just can't explain which you will need to read about.

Writing

L.A Larkin is a satisfactory writer who has created multiple characters who are extremely likeable, and awesome gruesome, astonishing plot and themes. With very detailed descriptions of the countries involved. And also embarks on the subject of rhinoceros poaching in South Africa which I knew obviously existed but this book made me realised the impact and scale this is on.

Pacing.

Although confusing at the beginning with not having read the previous book it was nearly promptly forgotten once more of the backstory came out and this is a fast-paced, nail-biting and a gruesome book which will have you locked to your seat.

Cover

A strikingly awesome cover.

Overall thoughts.

A fast-paced, nail-biting book with many many themes throughout and detailed descriptions of a couple of countries this is set across. Many likeable, unique and interesting characters and some relatively disgusting and gruesome characters amongst them. L.A.Larkin has created a terrific story. I wholly enjoyed this book which has everything you would want which is fastened in a nice little neat bow.

Although this is the second book to feature Olivia Wolfe, intrepid investigative journalist for UK newspaper The Post, there's absolutely no need to have read book 1 first as past events are explained very well. Having said that, I was intrigued by what I read and shall be catching up with that bit of history in Devour. Rescued from going off the rails at the age of fourteen by now ex Met police Chief Supt Butcher, she has carved out an excellent career for herself, spending much of it in war zones. Thanks to Butcher, now a private detective, she has learnt to take care of herself, and still relies on him and his cyber crime hacker assistant for help and advice. A mysterious syndicate is employing a very ruthless assassin to wipe out people for them. Unfortunately they have picked a hitman who enjoys his work just a little too much and who cannot resist showing off his handiwork. Now that's just a recipe for disaster. An exposé by the girlfriend of a secretary to the UK Chancellor leads Olivia to the start of an investigation that uncovers four linked deaths worldwide and some very guarded secrets in South Africa. The reader gets treated to wonderful descriptions of the varied lives of those living there, including the back streets of Soweto and the magnificent and often very dangerous work done preserving rare species in the reserves and national parks. The descriptions of poaching activities and the protection of animals, such as the rhinos, from hunting and extinction are quite gruesome and upsetting, and serve to demonstrate what a huge problem and dilemma it is for the world in general. Money appears to buy everything and everyone. Superintendent Dan Casburn of SO24, the newly created Global Threat Taskforce part of the Metropolitan police, returns into Olivia's life. So does her Russian ex lover whom Dan allowed to escape justice previously. Both appear to be trying to protect her, just as in turn she is trying to protect her sources and those she cares about. Driven and determined to expose corruption and criminality at its very highest level, this time she may have taken on more than she can handle and choosing who she can trust might just cost her life. I read this book almost by accident, but once started it was very difficult to put down. The plot and subject matter are completely engrossing, and the pages fly by at speed with plenty of tension and near breakneck pace at the end. There are a couple of nice open threads left at the end which I sincerely hope become book 3.

As an investigative journalist, Olivia Wolfe is no stranger to being in the line of fire but after she hears that one of her confidential sources has died after sharing some incriminating evidence against a government official she starts to become suspicious as to who is really behind her death.

Her journey takes her to South Africa investigating four gruesome murders that appeared to have occurred in four different countries. The deeper Wolfe gets into the investigation she discovers that she has become a person of interest for this vicious assassin. Can she stay alive long enough to expose the corruption and prevent anymore spilled blood.

I LOVED the very gritty and descriptive language. It is definitely not for the faint of heart but the rest of us will love it!

This is the second book in the series to feature the investigative journalist Olivia Wolfe, although it is fine to read alone, as I found out! She works for a U.K newspaper and finds herself on the edge of a big story one that will span continents and uncover some very deep and guarded secrets in South Africa. The story moves to South Africa and I found the descriptions of the country and the way people have to live eye opening really. The dangerous work that the reserves have to do as well to protect the animals from illegal poachers and extinction was upsetting too, but shows us how much of a problem it is for, not just the animals but the world too. Olivia finds she has two men return to her life at a point where she is trying to protect her sources, they in turn are attempting to protect her! She is determined to uncover the corruption and illegal comings and goings at the highest level this time, but it seems she may be going a step too far! It is a question of who can she trust?
I enjoyed thus book a fast paced engrossing read, from the descriptions of South Africa and it's beauty to the corruption of South Africa, so interesting! I may have to read Devour, the first book now!Thank you to Bloodhound books for my ARC which I received in order to write this review.

I enjoyed this crime thriller story. It is my first book by this author, I can't wait to see what is next from her. This is a story that is action filled story that kept me turning pages. The twists and turns left me sitting on the edge of my seat. Olivia is a reporter that has many enimies now she is being hunted. I enjoyed her character. She made the story engaging and I had no problems connecting to her and the others in this story. Now that she is faced with betrayal and faced with the feeling of isolation, I highly recommend reading this story to find out what happens next.

This took me a little while to get into but I’m glad that I stayed with it.
A no holds barred, descriptively gruesome read.

Investigating Journalist Olivia Wolfe is always a woman on a mission; and takes great pride in exposing some of the world’s worst criminals., so when she gets her next case, she thinks nothing of getting on a plane and travelling to South Africa.

As the murders start piling up, Olivia is determined to get to the bottom of the reasons for the gruesome murders. But she finds herself going against some of the most powerful people, who are more than prepared to do what it takes to stop her; finding herself being hunted down by an unknown assailant and ending up in the police station being framed for the murder of a friend.

This book was of particular interest to me as a large part of it is set in South Africa, and having lived there for most of my life, I was intrigued to read a book set in my old home country.

I am so glad that I chose to read this book as it is fantastic!

It is gruesome and gory, thrilling and tense, and I couldn’t put it down. I learned much about poaching and professional hits and I loved every minute of it.

Highly recommend this nail-biter of a book!

Olivia Wolfe is back in this action-packed thriller which spans across the UK and South Africa. It picks up where DEVOUR (#1) left off, but can easily be read as a standalone.

Olivia is investigating a death in the UK, a money trail that leads back to Africa and an underground syndicate that will have nothing-or noone- stop them from collecting their ultimate prize, the rhino horn. The poaching issues are thoroughly researched and deeply concerning, and has opened up my eyes to the awful injustices experienced by these gentle giants. The South African setting adds an element of danger and the exotic to Olivia's investigations. When it comes to Olivia, danger is never far away! She makes an unlikely partner in Detective Casburn whom she seems to have a love/ hate relationship with and I really enjoyed seeing how these two worked together, build trust and ultimately uncover the truth. There’s also enough loose threads at the end of the story to leave me wanting more. I’d really like to know what happens next!

Olivia is a determined and tough heroine who isn’t afraid of a challenge, no matter what is at stake. For Lisbeth Salandar fans, Olivia Wolfe is right up your ally. Highly recommend this series by Australian author L.A. Larkin.

Having previously been introduced to Investigative Journalist Olivia Wolfe, in the novel Devour, I eagerly awaited the release date for Prey.
Olivia is investigating alleged corruption involving a British Cabinet Minister and her zest for the truth and a good story takes her to South Africa. Here her past catches up with her in more ways than one and her chase leads her to a private wildlife reserve and the horrors of rhino poachers.
This is a fast moving action packed read which is not for the faint hearted, as it it quite gruesome in parts. A well written novel with many surprises which I would recommend.

"Better written than Lynda La Plante or Stephen King!" is what my husband exclaimed enthusiastically after reading LA Larkin's brilliant new novel "Prey", and I have to agree (though I put it differently). This is everything you want in a thriller - tightly paced and crafted, a butt-kicking but complex heroine, and escalating jeopardy that will have your heart in your throat in one particular riveting and shudderingly PTSD inducing scene. But above all it is intelligent and authentic, with the author's research into this despicable illegal trade shining through. And at times, genuinely moving. A superb thriller all round.

Wolfe is a journalist who finds her way to trouble, bit in this book the story is written so well that you are gripped from the start. The story involves secret service personel, police, poachers, syndicate bosses, assassins, and a conference. There is a trail of money dealings to offshore accounts that start the search by the journalist.
I found this book was so good that I read it in a short time frame.

100% could not put this down!

There is just something really awesome about strong kick ass female protagonists and Olivia Wolfe is one of these! I love her!

Basically she's a reporter but sucked into this awful world of animal poaching. Honestly some parts are really graphic, gruesome and gross...but just skip over those if you need to.

She is such a cool, resilient, strong female MC and following her through some tough situations makes for a great read.

I went looking for the next Olivia Wolfe read but am yet to find one! I am a huge fan!!

Thank -you Clandestine Press for sending me this! So very cool!!!

Brilliant! Every book I have read written by this author is gripping and almost impossible to put down. I make sure when I start to read a L A Larkin book that I am prepared to be a recluse until it’s finished. All of her books keep you invested until the last page. I shudder how her mind works thinking up the plots and turns. Larkin is in my opinion one of the best suspense writers I have ever read and I have read many.

Our heroine, Olivia, is a journalist but with a difference, great skill as a fighter and a psychological understanding of a cold blooded murderer sent to eliminate her as she travels through the world and helps control the rhino trade. It’s almost too much. However it is a thriller and has a well told love scene, something not so easy to write.

I really enjoyed this, for what it was. True, the lead character is a former soldier but for the most part it avoids the RWNJ elements that tend to invade this genre - possibly because neither the writer nor the characters is American. There's sex and violence (I had no problem with the violence, but the sex was blushful), and an interesting premise. It's the second in a series (I think) and the love interest from the first book, which I've not read, seems quite superfluous to this story but maybe it's going somewhere.
