The Girl He Needs

Rate this book
Three reasons I’m getting in a car with a stranger by Josie Woodmere:

My piece of crap car is on fire on the side of the highway.
The guy in the truck doesn’t look like a murderer… in fact, he’s hot.
Even if he tries something, I’m confident I could take him.
Hottie in the truck, Brinn McRae turns out to be straight-laced and so not my type. Plus, I’m not looking for romance. I have to find a job and my estranged brother.

The universe must have different plans because the first job my Daytona temp agency sends me to is Brinn’s flight school. And if I thought we weren’t compatible before, working in his small office makes me question my feelings. The only problem is I’m not sure if I want to loosen his straight-laces or choke him with them.

I don’t know if he’s the man I want, but I’m positive I’m the girl he needs.

Escape to Daytona Beach, Florida in this enemies to lover romance. The Girl He Needs is the first book in the No Strings Attached Series but each book can be read as a standalone. Only, you'll love this group of friends and want to share in their journey for love, happiness, and a few good laughs.

Hey! I’m Kristi. I write romances that will tug your heartstrings and laugh out loud mysteries. In all my stories you’ll fall in love with the cast of characters, they’ll become old, fun friends. My one hope is that I create stories that satisfy any of your book cravings and take you away from the rut of everyday life (sometimes it's a good rut).

When I’m not writing I’m spinning (riding a stationary bike, repurposing Happy Planners, or drinking a London Fog (hot tea with frothy milk).

I’m the mom of 2 and a milspouse (retired). We live in the Pacific Northwest and are under-prepared if one of the volcanoes erupts.
Here are 3 things about me:
• I lived on the outskirts of an active volcano (Mt.Etna)
• A spider bit me and it laid eggs in my arm (my kids don’t know that story yet)
• I grew up in Central Florida and have skied in lakes with gators.

I’d love to get to know you better. Join my Read & Relax community and then fire off an email and tell me 3 things about you!

Quick (short) Review

I confess to liking the idea of this story more than I did the actualised narrative exposition with Kristi Rose's The Girl He Needs. The concept can be appreciated, and I was enticed by the potential of a nomadic no-nonsense heroine who's very much an unapologetic outcome of her choices following a childhood subjected to parental aspiration and a leading lady who was some variant of a child genius. One who presently lives on her own terms and to her own will. I did admittedly feel a deeper interest for a female protagonist who seems to move on without difficulty, even as something deeper motivates her desire to keep moving forward without the familiar commonality many of us share in looking back. Unfortunately, this book falls to the common phenomenon of disengaging its reader. The story doesn't involve a convincing sense of connection, at least this was how It felt for me. And any initial interest was squandered shortly after the first third of the story. What followed was an uncoordinated storyline, and just like its heroine, the narrative struggled to find itself as much it struggled to discover itself.

The character development isn't necessarily a strength of the novel, and although I wasn't totally averse to either protagonist, neither read with much more than a milder draw. Although both Josie and Brinn bore some interest as characters independent of each other, they didn't make for a compelling pair. I waited for the story to deepen and to hopefully feel some form of a connective tether but I found great difficulty in connecting with what felt like a disconnected story, and a disconnected romance in tandem. I can't say that I felt any real engagement towards Brinn and Josie's romantic potential, and in all honesty, the author doesn't do the most effective duty of interpreting their chemistry. I was told more about the apparent attraction brewing between them more than I ever felt it for myself, and the romantic development didn't sport a convincing quality.

Crucially, what motivated me to complete this novel, and what did inspire a connection, was a central plot that engages a sibling relationship that exists between Will and Josie. I was drawn to their estrangement and decidedly interested in the closeness Josie once shared with her older brother. Josie has since held hard and fast to a possible reconnection, and her most secret desire to form a relationship with her brother - the only person she can claim to have ever meant something to her - superseded my interest concerning anything else the story had to offer. Although I was interested in the possibility of Josie and Brinn during the earlier stages of the story, the pacing bore issues, the casual romance didn't compel and I can't say everything comes together with a great sense of interest. I did assume that the story would be more interesting than it was, and to cap things off, the epilogue suggests that the following standalone instalment will follow an entirely new character that we only meet come the story's conclusion as opposed to setting up one of the female characters Josie develops friendships with during the story. Overall, my time with this book felt more like an exercise in duty than a venture of delight and whether readers might very well confront a story that lacks connection, hopefully Rose's series will feed the needs of its own audience.

Additional Thoughts:

1) It's worth noting that there are numerous grammatical errors in this book (at least, this was the case with the edition I read).

Content Warning/Listing: Assault. Drinking. Bedroom scenes (not entirely explicit, some are fade to black and others are non-descriptive). Mentions panic attacks. Familial estrangement. Alternative living. Strained parent/child relationships. Estranged sibling relationship/sibling reconnection. Childhood responsibility. Parental abandonment. Rebelling against parental aspirations. Schizophrenia, mental illness, TBI (traumatic brain Injury). Childhood neglect. Mentions parent alcoholism and drug use and a childhood of deprivation in different forms. Foster care system.

If I hadn’t gotten this for free during kindle day, I would have revolted.
It was poorly written, the writing style was jumpy and confusing and the whole book was about absolutely nothing with a non-cohesive plot.

Josie (who sounds like a vapid horrible person) is in search of her brother whom we know nothing about (but he is found within the first 30% of the book), and starts a no-strings attached relationship with some guy named Brinn who is an ??airplane instructor?? Who honestly knows at this point. Within 25% they’re making out, so what else is left to happen? Nothing, but it dragged on anyway.

Whole book was wattpaddy (and not the good kind) and I really had to drag my bored frustrated ass through to finish it.

“The Girl He Needs” by Kristi Rose is the first book that I read by this author and it will definitively not be my last.

Reading the first pages – there might be readers assuming that Josie is just a drifter that leaves whenever things get to “intense” but the more you follow the course of the book the more you learn about her.

And (at least that was true for me) the more I understood her. While the whole book is actually the story of Brinn’s and Josie’s developing relationship – for me it also turned out to be an intense story on her brother.

I will not spoiler on any subject but you are given a fair warning that facts will not be sugarcoated and it will get raw.

And there is something very very true about the thought that you might be able to choose friends the way you like them but family is a given. No matter if that is a good or a bad thing.

The book is just short of a 5 star read for me – just because of the fact that I did not have any intense outbursts – sorry but those are my rules (neither tears nor laughter = no 5 stars) – otherwise it would have been a solid 5 star.

The author creates a fully developed storyline with deep characters and I can recommend this book from the bottom of my reading heart. Looking forward to the next book by this author.

I am very much glad to be free from this story. The main character was not very likeable, to the point I only finished this purely out of spite. I would have given it two stars, but I remembered the author used “tighty whities” during a sex scene.

This book sadly wasn't to my liking. It dragged and I had to push myself to finish it. I didn't lkke the writing style and I didn't much like either of the MC. I especially disliked the heroine, Josie and when I dislike the heroine there's not much chance I'll enjoy the book. I probably won't continue with this series.

Its alright.

For a book mainly about a “no-strings-attached” relationship it sure did have a lot of fade in to black scenes.

I understand why this book was free now- it really was quite terrible. The plot was really badly written, veryyy little character development, and josie was acc just the worst. Referring to her “girly parts” the whole time, really??? Ew. Also the cultural appropriation for the henna obsession really just gave me the ick. 4/10

This was not the girl I needed. I struggled with this book because I just didn’t care for the main character. I didn’t hate her. Unfortunately, I couldn’t care less about her. When she finally got together with the guy I felt nothing. Sad. 😞 I read books so I can feel all the good stuff. I don’t have any plans to read anything else by this author. This book had been sitting on my kindle for a long time and should have stayed hidden there.

Josie's brother Will was her best and only friend. He checked out of the hospital after being there for several weeks and never returned. Josie has been looking for him for two years. She's traveling from place to place and hopes she will find him eventually. She left her parents' dreams and expectations behind, so she can solely focus on her brother. When Will tells her he's in Florida Josie packs her bags and moves. On her way to Daytona Beach her car breaks down and she has to hitchhike to get there. Brinn gives her a lift as she coincidentally is on her way to his hometown.

Josie finds a job and a home. The rent is high, so she needs a second job. That is when she meets Brinn again. He lives near her and they work for the same company. Josie is a no-strings attached girl and she wants to show the serious Brinn how to have fun. She's supposed to leave again after a few months, so they both know it's a temporary thing. Will they be all right with that and when Josie finally finds her brother, will she be able to say goodbye?

Josie has a fascinating personality. She's free, she's extremely intelligent, she's living by her own rules and she likes decorating her body with henna. She's a strong woman and she doesn't mind standing out in a crowd. I loved how Kristi Rose uses body art as one of the ways to define her personality. I enjoy reading about main characters who can take care of themselves and liked Josie from the start. Brinn is a sweet guy who works hard for his future. He forgets that there's more in life than work and Josie wants to show him how to start living again. They have great chemistry and their friendship is special as well. They're good together and I enjoyed reading about their ups and downs.

Kristi Rose writes about serious topics like illness, difficult relationships with parents and losing everything you have in a sympathetic way. She mixes it with sexy scenes and that works very well. Her story has many interesting emotional layers. I loved reading about Josie and her brother Will. There's so much about the past she doesn't know and it was intriguing to find out what it was. I read this book in one sitting, the story grabbed my attention from the start and I couldn't put it down.

Kristi Rose's writing has an easy flow. She uses creative ways to describe her characters and she writes about them in detail, so the reader has the chance to get to know them through and through, which is something I really liked. I also loved the strong bonds Josie manages to form with people. She and Brinn are smart, which is something else I appreciated. It's clear that Kristi Rose has paid a lot of attention to the technical aspects of her story. There are many fabulous different parts and together they make The Girl He needs a wonderful complete book. I loved everything about this novel and think it's amazing.

3.75 stars!

This review is long overdue, mostly because I was unable to make up my mind about it. To be honest, I am still not sure but I am going to give it a try.

So, I liked the character of Josie a lot. Yes, she had a lot to figure out for herself and she was a drifter but I liked the fact that in the beginning it was shown that she was a no-nonsense girl. And I need to read books about more such characters. The other thing that I liked about this book was how it covered a range of things - starting from discussion about schizophrenia. Now, I have read a few books talking about mental disorders briefly and no doubt even here we had talk about it briefly. But what I liked about it is how the story was connected around it, it didn't feel as if it was a last attempt by the author to talk about something serious and important. Also we had discussions about adverse childhood experience which made the book more sensible and approachable for me.

Now coming to the romance, I hate to admit this but I wasn't a big fan of Brinn and Josie. As much as I liked their character individually, I didn't appreciate them that much when they were together. I don't know how to put this but Brinn was a bit obnoxious for my taste. But apart from that, I did enjoy reading this book!

I was provided with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I'm around 30% of this book and instead of reading and feeling the angst/sexual tension. I'm being told they have sexual tension and yet, the MC are barely interacting except for very public brief encounters. I couldn't finish since I also had no relatable connection the female MC.

Not terrible for a free book I got on stuff-your-kindle day.
Florida insta-romance with some family & work drama mixed in.
Felt each character & them as a couple could’ve used more back story.
Didn’t have the enemies/lovers/opposites feel that the book was described as. Just two hot kinda boring people 😅
And I ABSOLUTELY HATE TYPOS & this book has plenty. 🥲

I liked this book a lot more than I expected to! There is a little bit of a mystery and some falling in love, but the main theme of finding your own home on your own terms is one we all can relate to. A quick and easy read with surprising depth!

I loved every second, couldn’t put it down. Such an easy care free read. Full circle story and nothing was forgotten. Can’t complain. I love the plot, the characters and their individualities. Despite it not being a long book or a long series following the same characters I feel like I know them quite well and that these people really exist.
Short and sweet and as nice as a warm cup of tea. A nice fun time.

This tried to be something and fell so short. The writing style was weird. Anytime something interesting was about to happen, the author just skipped over it and we started the next page after the fact. What’s the point?
Josie and Brinn had no real connection. Why do they love each other? I was not convinced on them.
Also the reconnecting of Will felt so anti-climatic. You’ve been searching for your brother for years and then he becomes a side plot we barely think of.
I couldn’t have cared less about the third act breakup because the chemistry between these two characters was almost zilch.
Stuff your kindle day isn’t all it’s cracked up to be apparently.

Well this book was definitely a book… a good book? I wouldn’t put it to that level of praise… but it wasn’t TERRIBLE… for the first 75%. Granted that is giving a ton of grace considering how fast things moved with really no explanation or reason…

Let’s start with Josie and McRae… Josie clearly does not have a brain… I don’t know how she got a law degree, but she is the main character so main character things I guess? Quirky? McRae? A standard male whore. Their stupidity alone honestly makes them perfect for each other. HOWEVER, I genuinely cannot stand these plot lines of people being clearly great for each other but playing into the whole we can’t be a real thing because I don’t deserve to be happy. GROW UP.

Now let’s go to Will… how come we are not talking about McRae literally punching this schizophrenic man out cold? Like yeah I guess they needed to get him under control but like dude… Will is kinda goated though for using his disease to write alien books, where is that book I wanna read that. If I had Josie as a sister, I would also be triggered by her so he is valid.

Okay, now we are at the point where I lost respect. You live in Florida… FLORIDA and you’re telling me you didn’t realize a CAT 5 hurricane was on its way to royally screw you in 30 minutes. I’m sorry but you guys work in Aviation… you gotta know better than this.

THEN— Gloomy McRae boohoo man crying because life happened? Then yelling at Josie and blaming a hurricane on her? OKAY COOL ADDS UP.

BUT THEN— McRae gets a tattoo basically symbolizing Josie and doesn’t go to find her? Just chilling at a bar till she walks up to him to tell him not to treat her like dirt… all for them to magically be okay after she sees the tattoo. Josie please I am begging you. STAND UP.

Overall, it was an easy read and the chaos angered me which kept me wanting to know how this monstrosity would end.

I loved this book. Josie lived a life that her parents controlled. They told her where she had to go to school. Her parents did not tell her everything that happened the night of her older brother's car accident. All Josie knew was that her brother, Will, disappeared, but had no reason. Josie needed those answers. She had questions Will had to answer. Where has Will be since he left 2 years ago? What has he been doing for a living? We know why Josie was moving from town to town. Because she got clues to where Will could be. That is how she ended up in Daytona Beach. Will Will be there? Will Will tell her all of her questions she needed answered?

What she did not except was Brinn McRae. In the beginning of the book, Josie called him McRae, but someone in there he started to be Brinn to her. I think this is when Josie stopped being someone moving from place to place. I think she finally found home.

The Girl He Needs
Series: Book one in the No Strings Attached Series
Rating: 4 stars
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is the first book I read by Kristi Rose and I really enjoyed it. Josie and Brinn were really opposites but in some way they were able to complement each other very well. They were what each of them needed to be happy. She brought joy and spontaneity to his life while he brought stability and calmness to hers. They had great chemistry together and Josie enjoyed pushing Brinn's buttons. The scene with the scooter was very funny!
I loved the relationship they each had with their own brothers. Josie had been trying to locate her brother, Will, for some time already. It's a little heartbreaking when she finds out the reason of why he's been so elusive. At the same time Brinn has been a parent/brother for his. He's been responsible for his brother since they were young and for that reason Brinn always seems to carry the world on his shoulders.
I look forwards to more books in the series.
