Fiona Watt is an Editorial Director and writer at Usborne Publishing. She started working at Usborne in 1989 and has written and edited hundreds of books including baby and novelty, sticker, art and craft, cookery, science and activity books. Fiona graduated from Exeter University with a B.Ed. (Hons.), specialising in Psychology and Art and Design. After university she worked as a researcher and writer for a company which published educational material for places where children went on school visits (zoos, museums, stately homes etc). She then taught seven, eight, and nine year olds for five years; three years at a state school in Sevenoaks in Kent, and two years at The British School in the Netherlands in The Hague.
Having joined Usborne in 1989, Fiona became an editorial director in 2003, largely responsible for writing baby and novelty books, as well as art and activity titles. She has written over 100 titles for Usborne Publishing, perhaps most notably the, ‘That’s not my ….‘ touchy-feely series.
A lovely book which gives babies and toddlers the opportunity to touch different textures - fluffy, bumpy, shiny, frizzy. My toddler loves it and she especially loves to touch the wings on the second fairy, which are like a soft fur.
This is a 'touchy feely' book about a fairy and what she should look like. Every page has a part of the fairy that is made using different materials, allowing children to touch.
This is a good book to get children interested and interacting with books, engaging in the words being said and looking at the pictures. It allows the child to explore their visual and touching senses, becoming familiar with the different textures and as they get older, they will become familiar with the link between the word and the texture, e.g. fluffy. I would say that this book is suitable for children as young as seven months with adult supervision right up to around the age of three. It could be used in an early years setting to explore the senses and to associate describing words with the texture.
My little girl is too old for this now but she used to love the textures in this book up until the age of 2. She used to enjoy finishing the sentences for me as her vocabulary started to expand and I had read it to her so many times that she knew it all by heart. She also dressed up as a fairy from the book and took it with her on World Book Day to a Mother and Toddler group event where the children where asked to dress up as their favourite book characters. So this book will always remind me of some lovely memories from her very early childhood.
We’ve read quite a few of these books and my three year old still enjoys them. She likes to “read” them to her dolls and stuffed animals since the repetition makes it very easy to memorize. My gripe with this one is that three of the six textures are way too similar-shiny, sparkly, and smooth (which is a shiny silver material). Could’ve been a bit more creative in that area for a book that isnt overly creative to begin with.
One of the oldest That’s not my... books, and certainly one of the most successful. My daughter loved feeling the different textures throughout, but was particularly enchanted by the shiny bits on all of the pages.
Bought for my daughter, perfect for 0-2/3 year olds very simple and colourful and the textures add a great element of fun to it to keep little ones entertained.
This is a touch and feel book about looking for a fairy. Overall this book, like most in the series, is quite repetitive. It includes a different touch element on each page. My little girl wasn’t too impressed with this book but every now and again will bring it out for a re-read.
This is a highly rated board book series and great for younger children. Rating based off toddler enjoyment, may re-visit in the future.
This book has great sensory words and is great for babies. Also, the touchy-feely pages help interest children in books. Look for the mouse on each page. Check out my page to purchase this book: www.ubah.com/s2995
I don't know which came first, but this is pretty much the same book as 'That's not my Bear', only girly. She loves the shiny aspects just as much as the touching ones. A definite love.
To put it quite frankly, this book is not my cup of tea. The premise behind this work is a kid's touch-and-feel book which involves outfits that fairies where and wands, etc. The story is non-existent and the art is lame.
The That's Not My series from Usborne is great for babies, toddlers and even early readers. Great touchy feely patches, thick outlines for little baby eyes, and repetitive text to help early readers!
It's so fun to find the mouse in each of these books and compare which fairy we like at the end. There are so many different ways to interact with this series.
