I was actually pretty engaged for the first half or so, but it really did start to go downhill afterwards. The very minor issues I had with the original Borrasca parts I-IV suddenly became one of the most prominent aspects of this story. I thought that, despite not loving some of the dialogue in the original story, the rest of it made up for that. Here, however, it's just a constant repetition of Sam and Kimber arguing about the same thing every single chapter and insanely cartoonish villainy from every single antagonistic character.
The same series that focused on the deep-rooted evil of this town and the abuse that these women and girls face due to these people has the main bad guy say stuff like "I am a sultan. These are my governors and that is my harem" and "I'm an alpha, Sam." There are also some lines that Sam and Kimber say that really got annoying. I honestly thought that the characters in part I, who were 9-10 years old, spoke like they were a lot older than their age. Meanwhile, here, these 20-something characters all talk like edgy thirteen-year-olds for some reason?
For aspects I enjoyed, I liked that Sam was kind of a jerk (at least, at the beginning) because of all this anger he's been holding in for years, and I am also happy that his dynamic with Kimber never turned into anything romantic. The beginning in general was actually pretty good imo. I also didn't hate the fact that they were reunited with Kyle at the end, and if the story had kept the same tone and weight that the rest of the series did, I think this ending could've actually worked pretty well. Ultimately, I get that this was probably written to appease people who wanted a happy ending instead of the downer ending of part 4, but this was definitely not the way to go about it.
